Today’s Warrior; New Advisory Council; 2 Modular Hospitals will be donated; ATTT and ASEP announcements; Ñeques!

Friday, June 26, 2020

He woke in silence to the ghastly ill-lit room. Danger was constantly looming; time was both his faithful companion and his most luscious poison. War, to most, was hell, but to him it was mesmerizing. The war he fought kept him sharp, kept him alive all the while those foreign to him were agonizing. He believed himself a skilled strategist; knowledge was just a part of him as was his beating heart. Yet, he wasn’t comfortable; his position was wrong. He does no good to the world, to his cause, outside his nest. But he needed to rest; we all need rest. With every passing day, it’s him or the world and it’s not his time to die. Today is not that day. “I’ve been out too long.”, he thought. It didn’t matter what time it was, he always felt as if he was betraying his world by napping even for a minute. Every minute, every second from his nest was a loss and you can never recover time. “I need to get back. What have I missed?”, he said out loud. But there was no one there to hear him. Oh, how he enjoyed hearing his own voice from time to time; his weak, raspy voice. He listened to the distance. It will be raining soon… It was too early to be this dark. No sooner did he finish his thought did the first thick drops hit the tin roof and the petrichor permeated his nostrils through the open window. The warrior took his position and peered through the glass in search of advances from his enemy. It wasn’t long before he saw it. His heart began to race, his brow drew its first bead of sweat. He stood and with a glimmer in his eyes he yelled out, “Yeeeeeeeeessssss!” He scrolled further. “I won!” His immaturity yet again would mask his self-proclaimed wealth of knowledge. He would try to muster up some restraint, but it wouldn´t change fact; time spoke of truth once again. His body relaxed and with a deep sigh, he slouched back to his favorite position in that armchair. Turner being removed was a great victory, but now this?! Losing Xavier was everything he had dreamt of. “That son-of-a-bitch would no longer defy my opinions with his stupid facts!”, he whispered to himself. And then, the voice from nowhere returned and with it, like sweet morphine, he could feel a new mission surge from the depths of his protruding belly. “You’re an armchair warrior. You pick your battles.”, the voice said alluding to the digital battles that only the voice truly understood.

Oh geez … Another Armchair Warrior

A pejorative term it was, “Armchair Warrior”, nevertheless he embraced the term lovingly. “Who needs school?”, he smirked. “Who needs training when I have you?”, he coaxed the very voice in his head. “From my nest, I am a god, not to be reckoned with.”. His smirk turned sinister. “All I need is another target.” With pizza boxes still strewn about from last week’s “Two for Tuesday” special, his fingers blasted the keys with renewed fervor. He also moonlighting as a skilled slacktivist, finding joy in boosting the egos of those out in the field. He would scour the bowels of Facebook for something devilish to “like” or “share”. “I have no idea why they tore down the statue of George Washington, but good for them!”, he thought while simultaneously clicking “like”. Aiming to disrupt all that is good and with a desire to feel the pain of others through their words as they respond to his taunts in ALL CAPS, it was now time to switch from Facebook to Twitter… “COVID’s a hoax”, he’d write. And then his staple laugh and attempt at mockery as no one listens, “Muuuaaaaaahhahahahahahahahaha…..”

I will be on that comfy chair tweeting, good Sir

SÁEZ LLORENS LEAVES ADVISORY TECHNICAL COMMITTEE. REVEALS THAT THE HEALTH MINISTER IS HURTING AND EXPLAINS WHY

Xavier Sáez-Llorens and Rosario Turner.

The renowned doctor Xavier Sáez Llorens confirmed to Mi Diario the afternoon of this Friday, June 26, that he is leaving the Technical Advisory Committee against COVID-19 from the Ministry of Health and will assume another role.

“We dissolved an advisory group and restructured our role to provide contributions in specific thematic areas,” said Sáez Llorens to this medium.

The infectologist and clinical researcher clarified that he will now advise “on scientific research with vaccines in development” against the new coronavirus.

On whether she had been able to communicate with the former Minister of Health, Rosario Turner, after she was removed from her position, the infectologist stated that she “is hurt” and that she considers it to be a political decision.

“The former minister is still hurt by form, rather than by substance. He knows that they are political decisions ”, revealed Sáez Llorens, one of the most surprised with the way in which Turner left the Ministry of Health.

This Wednesday, President Laurentino ‘Nito’ Cortizo made changes to his Cabinet and the one that generated the most reactions was that of Rosario Turner, who was replaced as Minister of Health, by the until then former Deputy Minister of that portfolio, Luis Sucre,

“I was surprised, I did not expect or less desired. Public health has lost a great leader, with work capacity and exceptional technical receptivity,” said the renowned doctor at the time.

THEY ASSURE THAT THE ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT CAN DESTROY THE CORONAVIRUS IN 99% IN ONLY 6 SECONDS

According to a lighting company that participated in the research, schools, offices, hospitals, warehouses and factories could in future be disinfected with UVC light.

Certain doses of ultraviolet light can almost completely destroy SARS-CoV-2, says a group of researchers and a lighting company.

The company Signify, a world leader in professional lighting, and the National Laboratories for Emerging Infectious Diseases (NEIDL) of Boston University, have conducted research that validates the effectiveness of UVC light sources against coronavirus, they assure.

Since the onset of the covid-19 pandemic, Anthony Griffiths, an associate professor of microbiology at Boston University School of Medicine, has been working with his team on developing tools to support scientific advancement in this field.

During the investigation, they treated the inoculated material with different doses of UVC radiation from a Signify light source and evaluated the deactivation capacity under various conditions. The team was able to achieve a 99% virus reduction in just 6 seconds.

“The results of our tests show that exposed to a specific dose of UVC radiation, the viruses were completely inactivated: within seconds we could no longer detect any viruses,” Griffiths explained. “We are very excited about these findings and hope that this will accelerate the development of products that can help limit the spread of covid-19.”

“A preventive measure”

For his part, Signify chief executive Eric Rondolat told CNBC that the company knew that ultraviolet light was effective against viruses in general, but they were not sure if it was the case with SARS-CoV-2. However, after multiple tests, they were able to verify it.

“It is a preventive measure, which means that we are disinfecting objects, environments, surfaces and the air,” Rondolat said, adding that schools, offices, hospitals, warehouses and manufacturing plants could be disinfected in this way in the future.

Stores could also use a UVC camera to disinfect clothing after people have tried it on, the company executive added.

ODE TO THE ÑEQUE

Ñeque

For those of you who are new to Panama or are thinking about coming to Panama, the first time you see a Ñeque, well, it’s a wonderful thing. Unique mainly to this part of the world, not just Panama, but to the region, the Ñeque is a big, cute, rodent. Prior to coming to Panama, I definitely had never seen one.

Living in Las Cumbres, we see them all the time.  Usually, they’re lurking around in somewhat of a hop, but sometimes, they jaunt into a sprint and they’re GONE!

Tonight, I learned that they’re more commonly known as the AGOUTI.  The term agouti (Spanish: agutí, pronounced [aɣuˈti]) or common agouti designates several rodent species of the genus Dasyprocta. They are native to Middle America, northern and central South America, and the southern Lesser Antilles. Some species have also been introduced elsewhere in the West Indies.  They are related to guinea pigs and look quite similar, but they are larger and have longer legs. The species vary considerably in colour, being brown, reddish, dull orange, greyish, or blackish, but typically with lighter underparts. Their bodies are covered with coarse hair, which is raised when alarmed. They weigh 2.4–6 kg (5.3–13.2 lb) and are 40.5–76 cm (15.9–29.9 in) in length, with short, hairless tails.

In Mexico, the agouti is called the sereque and in eastern Ecuador, as the guatusa.

Video courtesy of my buddy Chuck, who loves all things “nature” and adds that he was shocked how local wildlife refuses to heed the warnings of MINSA by not wearing a mask. Also, the trap in the video isn’t for the Ñeque, it’s for whatever has been killing birds at night to trap and remove peacefully

Stay safe… Stay healthy… And by all means (unless you´re out Ñeque-watching) STAY HOME!!…
