(A special thanks today to my friend Raymond on his formatting suggestions.  You’re right, it does make the introduction easier to read.)

I know that this is my report for the 3rd of July, but I’m off tomorrow as I am on all Saturdays and Sundays.  I can’t let this date pass without penning down at least a smidgeon about it, especially after writing that glorious bit on Canada Day.

I miss being home for the 4th of July more than for any other holiday in the year. A close second would be Christmas, but it would have to be Christmas when I was a kid going to both of my grandparents’ houses and then the surprises that never seemed to end all day long on December 25th. However, Christmas back home isn’t the same without my grandparents, but the 4th of July is eternal.

Collecting Sap from Maple trees

Growing up in a small community such is Antigo, Wisconsin, with each passing winter, we looked forward to 4 things during the warmer parts of the year. For me that started with collecting the sap from maple trees around my Grandpa Mikkelson’s properties. A couple of months later, fishing season would open (officially… legally…) and then almost right after, we had the county fair. But the grand finale was without a doubt the 4th of July. It never mattered where we were at or what year it was, but the shows everyone would put on were spectacular. Even kids got to light off a few while the parents watched on nervously, cautiously, but with lots of pride and probably a few too many beers to boot.

My earliest memory of the 4th of July most definitely is the easiest to remember.  It was 1976 and the small town of barely 9,000 people had come together to decorate or paint red, white and blue on everything.  I specifically remember the fire hydrants, probably painted by a few sloppy teenagers, but as majestic as everything else in their own way.

Small towns really make a big deal out of this day as they’re truly the backbone of everything we represent as Americans. Hard workers, never concerned about the soil under their nails, or the oil and grease on their pants and shirt. Tough old men, who wouldn’t back down for nuthin’ when it came time to doin’ the right thing even if that meant a round of fisticuffs to honor his dame. I love going in to the diners like the Dixy or Two Angels. You can look across the crowd and see any number of good men and women who would give the shirt off their backs in the middle of winter to make a total stranger feel welcome. Good people, who would go to church and honestly make an effort to follow what Pastor Neal at Peace Lutheran was telling them in his soothing, genuine, good natured voice. Nowhere in the world would you find such devout Lutherans and Packer’s fans under one roof, like you would at that church on a Sunday morning; everyone dressed in their best Green and Gold in support of God and the Packers.

July 4th is perfect for so many reasons back home. It’s summer vacation. First cutting of hay was done long ago so even some of the town kids made money working part-time on the farms to buy their own fireworks (as long as they didn’t spend it all at the fair). The corner parks would fill up with parents and kids waiting until it got dark enough to light off a few bottle rockets and other minor things that fizzled or went bang. The more fortunate neighbors would put on a grand display for the neighborhood and we appreciated every minute of it. Cookouts were mandatory and not a single dad would fail his family with a good dose of hot dogs, burgers, meats, fresh corn-on-the-cob, mom’s famous potato salad (but without the celery, yuck) and something fresh out of the family garden.

We always had a great time and the feel-goods were abundant as the town, county, state and the whole country came together united as thoughts of independence and freedom rang loud. But the true feeling of patriotism didn’t hit me deep until nearly serving my first year in the Army. I was still in training, stationed in Monterrey, California’s Defense Language Institute. The 4th of July landed on a Tuesday that year so we got a very long weekend. To surprise my family, I flew back to Wisconsin, but needed to be back ON the 4th of July and back to formation first thing Wednesday morning.

Going home was great, as always, but it was the trip back that struck me hard. Imagine if you will, little old me, barely 19 years old, dressed in full uniform, I was bumped up to 1st class. Wow, if that wasn’t impressive enough. As we flew over San Francisco waiting to land, we could see the fireworks below us, not lighting up the sky, but lighting up the ground. With each pyrotechnic that bloomed and as the colors faded, I could feel a deep sense of pride rising from within that I wasn’t expecting nor probably yet deserved. The accounts of “Thank you for your service” at the airport was great, but the knowledge that this was truly a soldier’s day was just sinking in. This was the day we liberated a small group of colonies a mere 214 years prior. I thought to myself, “How profound could one man’s passion for the concept and hopes of such a great nation be that they would willingly give their life, take those of their own brothers, just to secure the future of so many millions for so many years to come?” I was unexpectedly humbled by my own thoughts.

I wept that night on my way to the base, knowing that I had given nothing of myself nor deserved such a selfless act of so many, so long ago.  Since then, so many have given so much, and several so many others have given all to maintain this independence that is threatened year after year by those who wish us ill, both foreign and domestic.  Nothing in life is free and Freedom isn’t an exception.

My brothers and sisters, take this day and enjoy it with all of your heart, but don’t take it for granted. Remember the passion of our forefathers as freedom hath many foes. As George Washington once said,

“We, too, born to freedom, and believing in freedom, are willing to fight to maintain freedom. We, and all others who believe as deeply as we do, would rather die on our feet than live on our knees.”

George Washington

Our nation has its faults but the foundations are strong, the pillars high. Look up and gaze upon our flag in wonder and amazement. Look upon her and recall everything that is good about her. In these tough times, it may appear difficult to keep our hearts sound and our spirit high. Shed away any hint of apathy, hate, prejudice or disrespect. You are good. You are an American. This is your day to shine. This is THE day for you to be reborn as our nation was so many years ago.

HAPPY 4TH OF JULY

Answers for how to isolate a Covid-19 patient at home and how to act to prevent transmission of the disease

If you live with a person who has been infected with the coronavirus or who may be, you should try to isolate the patient and take extreme hygiene precautions. This guide, based on the advice of the Community of Madrid, the region of Spain with the highest number of infected, explains how to do it:

  1. How should an infected person be isolated in a home?

To isolate a person infected with coronavirus in their own home, it is advisable to have a room exclusively for them. It is also advisable not to share a bathroom with the infected person and, as far as possible, avoid meeting the patient in other rooms of the home to comply with the protocol of keeping at least one meter away from any positive case.

  • ⇨ Whenever possible, it is recommended to install the patient in a room for exclusive use.
  • ⇨ Ensure good ventilation and a window with access to the street.
  • ⇨ If possible, reserve a bathroom for the infected person.
  • ⇨ A garbage can with automatic lid and bag inside with a hermetic closure for patient waste.
  • ⇨ The door must remain closed.
  • ⇨ You must limit circulation in the home to essential situations.
  • ⇨ To minimize contact, the patient will try to communicate with other family members or cohabitants via mobile.
  • ⇨ Maintain at least a distance of at least 1 meter with the patient.
  • ⇨ If you leave the room, the use of a mask and proper hand hygiene with soap and water or an alcohol-based disinfectant are recommended.
  1. How to clean the house?

When you live with a person infected with the Covid-19, a thorough daily cleaning is essential to avoid new infections. Special attention should be paid to surfaces that the infected person may have touched.

  • ⇨ The person in charge of cleaning should wear a mask and gloves.
  • ⇨ For cleaning, a solution of bleach water should be used: one part of disinfectant for every 49 of water.
  • ⇨ Clean all frequent contact surfaces daily: doorknobs, tables, switches, faucets, toilets, telephones, and keyboards.
  • ⇨ The dishes and utensils should be washed with hot soapy water, preferably in a dishwasher to reach 60º.
  • ⇨ The patient’s clothes can be washed separately with standard detergent at a temperature between 60º and 90º. Let it dry completely.
  1. What should be done with the waste?

The contaminated residues of an infected by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus can be dangerous for the safety of other people who live with it. Therefore, a correct treatment of the generated remains can avoid possible contagions. It is essential to use disposable cleaning elements, to properly insulate the trash in a plastic bag, and exhaustive personal hygiene after treating this waste.

  • ⇨ Throw the gloves and mask in the trash and wash your hands next.
  • ⇨ Trash should be in a closed plastic bag.
  • ⇨ The infected person’s towel will have a single use and will be placed in a specific bucket.

THOSE CONTAGIOUS WITH THE VIRUS THAT ARE CAUGHT OUTSIDE QUARANTINE AND ON THE STREETS, WILL LOSE THEIR BONUS AND FINED

If you are infected with the new coronavirus and are taking to the streets, now you should think twice. Not only will you be fined, but you must also enter a hotel hospital and you will not be able to cash your voucher.

This was warned by the Minister of Health, Luis Francisco Sucre, this Friday, July 3, after saying that people infected with Covid-19 have been surprised in the lines of supermarkets and using the subway and the metro bus.

“We made the decision that anyone who is positive Covid or is in quarantine will not be given their voucher and the government will be responsible for bringing their food to stay at home.”

Luis Francisco Sucre, Minister of Health

They will also be taken to hospital hotels on a mandatory basis, Sucre said.

NEW VARIANT OF THE CORONAVIRUS COULD GIVE BE MORE CONTAGIOUS, SÁEZ-LLORENS EXPLAINS

Llorens highlighted that these mutations are common in coronaviruses.

The infectologist Xavier Sáez-Llorens shared some infectious updates to the coronavirus, among which the mutation in a protein stands out.

According to the doctor, this variant could make the virus more contagious, but its aggressiveness would remain the same.

“A new variant of the virus (D614G, a single amino acid change: glycine replaces aspartic acid) has been identified and has begun to predominate (70% of strains in Europe, 20% in Panama according to the Gorgas Institute) in many parts of the world, this mutation in the protein of the spicule apparently gives the virus greater contagiousness, although aggressiveness is similar,” explained the doctor through his Twitter account.

Llorens stressed that these mutations are relatively common in coronaviruses and, on many occasions, tend to lower their dangerousness.

On the other hand, he referred to the treatments that have been shown to help the infected to a certain extent to overcome the disease. In the case of convalescent plasma, he pointed out that its efficacy is pending in controlled trials.

He also indicated that chloroquine, ritonavir, azithromycin, ivermectin, zinc, vitD, aspirin, and ibuprofen have shown no benefit or have not undergone rigorous screening in controlled studies.

“In therapies, so far, only remdesivir (pending publications on favipiravir), dexamethasone and oxygen (when satO2 is low), heparin (laboratory evidence of potential thrombosis) and perhaps tocilizumab (laboratory evidence of intense inflammation) are the only recommendations. based on reliable scientific data”, considered the specialist.

The doctor also warned the population about the promotion of some vaccines, for other diseases, that claim to offer immunity against the coronavirus.

“Use of polio, tuberculosis (BCG) or measles / mumps / rubella (SPR or MMR) vaccines for non-specific immune protection against COVID is for now only a hypothesis and should not induce a sense of security among those who apply it; As soon as we have data from rigorous scientific studies, I’ll let you know … beware of falling into the hands of merchants promoting these vaccines as proven protection,” he said.

PANAMANIANS ARE IGNORING THAT THEY COULD SUFFER RISK FACTORS

One in two people over 40 years of age who were interviewed between 2014 and 2019 by the Ministry of Health (Minsa) and the Social Security Fund (CSS) –as part of the Preventive Health Census to detect diseases, such as hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia (high cholesterol) and obesity – I didn’t know I had one or more of these conditions.

The scenario is closely related to what is currently happening with the new coronavirus, since data provided by the Health authorities show that 90% of people who die from Covid-19 present a risk factor that ranges from age even some chronic illness.

For Jorge Luis Prosperi, an expert in Public Health, in addition to what was detected that time in the census, it is also likely that today there is a high percentage of the population over 40 who do not know they have a disease. “I have argued that we must strengthen the active search for people with these risk factors,” he said.

According to Prosperi, the fact that people are unaware that they have a risk factor may be the most important variable, along with social deficiencies, in the high number of deaths in the country due to the virus.

“It is a hypothesis, but if you have a significant number of deaths in which the only risk factor is age, then it is likely that these people had a disease and did not know it,” he concluded.

Minsa figures specify that 36% of deaths from the virus have age as the only risk factor. In this regard, the former Minister of Health Miguel Mayo stressed that in the past administration people with ages over 40 were surveyed, and it was found that 1.3 million will suffer from hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia and obesity, and that 50% did not know it.

For May, the important thing is that the person goes to the controls and more in this situation.

“Every year,” he said, “some 55,000 people pass the 40-year barrier, so it is always valuable to know their health condition to prevent.”

COVID-19 CASE DETECTION CENTER FOR TRACEABILITY OPENS IN CHEPO

A traceability center to detect those positive people due to COVID-19 contagion, was inaugurated this Friday, June 3, by the authorities of the Health Region of Panama East, in the Chepo district.

Carlos Batista, head of this health region indicated, that this is a strategy that has been implemented for three weeks in the regions where there are greater cases, and consists of locating where these people are, what their contacts are and what the suspects are, to be able to isolate them all.

The idea, according to Batista, is to isolate these people for 14 days as indicated, so that they can be discharged.

According to the official, there is currently a cut of 214 people with COVID-19, in the Panama East region and an accumulated approximate of 1,200 diagnosed cases that have gradually come out of their picture and been discharged.

At the moment, they remain focused on the 214 cases, looking for all the people with whom they had contact and being able to identify where the virus is going.

HOW WILL THE ECONOMIC BLOCKS OPEN AGAINST THE PANDEMIC?

During his speech to the nation in his first year in office, President Laurentino Cortizo indicated that the infection rate of each province or region, the level of risk of the activity, the hospital capacity of the province or region are being considered, accompanied by rigorous monitoring of compliance with biosecurity measures ordered by the authorities.

Cortizo added that, at this stage in the evolution of the pandemic, “we all agree on the importance of finding a balance between health and economics. Therefore, a space was needed in which the technical health team interacts with other government authorities and representatives of the private sector.”

Scientists advise to see as an example for the opening of economic activities in the country the behavior of the pandemic in other countries with scenarios similar to that of Panama.

Epidemiologist Arturo Rebollón explained that, in Panama and West Panama, where the greatest number of cases of COVID-19 are concentrated, the measures must be strict.

However, in other regions of the country with very few cases, restrictions can be lifted and economic activities can be opened.

The Minister of Commerce and Industries, Ramón Martínez, indicated that the opening will be by sectors and regions, and that it has been identified to start, for example, with Los Santos, where the number of cases is very low. Some specific Block 3 activities can also be carried out throughout the country.

So far, the authorities have not specified the opening date of the other economic activities. Meanwhile, the population must continue to implement measures such as physical distancing, constant hand washing, and the correct use of masks, which are efficient in eradicating COVID-19.

DOUBTS PERSIST IN SOME SECTORS ABOUT THE MORATORIUM LAW

Article 1 indicates that the Law is applicable to those persons whose employment contracts have been suspended.

Law 287 on moratorium, sanctioned by the Executive Branch, although it was expected and beneficial, presents some gaps, in the opinion of Giovany Fletcher, of the Panamanian Institute of Consumer and User Law (Ipadecu).

According to Fletcher, the Law, beyond the good faith of the deputies in creating it, leaves some gaps, since in article 1 of this legal norm promulgated two days ago, it enters the plane of interpretation, by those who are going to apply.

He stressed that Article 1 refers to independent workers and merchants who have had to suspend their work, as a result of the pandemic crisis.

However, in Fletcher’s opinion, there is a percentage of the economically active population, among professionals, such as lawyers, accountants and engineers, who are independent, but at the same time general professionals, who do not seem to benefit from the moratorium and would not really have immediate protection, according to what is established by law.

He added that the people who dedicate themselves to these tasks are recognized as general professionals.

Article 1 indicates that the Law is applicable to those persons whose employment contracts have been suspended, but it does not make clear, whether also to general professionals.

In addition to this, Fletcher said that article 3 of the same law also leaves another gap, since it indicates that the debtors must reach a common agreement with the creditors to reach payment formulas, but in the middle of both there must be an inspector. or mediator, so that the bank does not impose criteria on the client.

For his part, the deputy Leandro Ávila stated that the Law is clear, and any Panamanian who demonstrates that he is not receiving a salary, income, or who currently has a discount, from the company where he works, can go to the bank with which maintains a debtor relationship and present it.

START TRIP TO MOVE HUNDREDS OF NICARAGUANS WHO WERE AT THE ALBROOK TERMINAL

Finally, Nicaraguans who have been in the Albrook Terminal for more than 24 hours will be able to be calmer since they will start their trip to Nicaragua, after buses have been set up that will take them to Paso Canoas and from there they will continue their route, until they reach their country.

As a result of diplomatic talks between Panama, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica, an exit agreement was reached for the group of 1,180 Nicaraguans who were staying at the Albrookterminal, demanding to withdraw from Panama.

Although not all of them will be able to leave Panama at the same time, it was agreed and coordinated the transfer, in 30 buses, to the Province of Chiriquí, where they will await the immigration procedures and respective approvals from their country, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica to the flow through its territory. Nicaraguans will have to pay $ 37.50 to travel by bus to Paso Canoas, and then pay $ 60 to continue on their way and reach Nicaragua. The bus drivers took the temperature of each passenger, the first to enter were pregnant women and families with children.

The immigration procedure is maintained in groups of up to 100 people, as dictated by the Nicaraguan government.

The notifications at the sanitary fences in Panama Oeste, Capira and San Carlos have already been made so that the buses can pass without problems.

On the part of the National Immigration Service and its press center, they reported that the Panamanian authorities warn that new skirmishes or activities like these will not be allowed, as it is an attack on public health.

They also pointed out that those who insist on promoting this type of act will be subject to Panamanian laws, especially those that apply due to the health situation generated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Star-Spangled Banner

The Star-Spangled Banner in all her glory is by far my favorite song on this date for some very obvious reasons. I took the time to get goosebumps this evening and listen to a few of my favorite variations of the song, from the more traditional versions to my favorite rock versions. Some have said that any variation of the song, outside it’s intended version is a disgrace. But when you actually take the time to feel the love that is strum from the fingers of the great Jimmy Hendrix, it’s hard to believe that he means any wrong. My favorite “disgraceful” version is from Boston however. Anyways, here they are; I hope you get to play at least one of them at your own personal event this weekend.

First, as you may have never heard it.  The best 11 minutes and 39 seconds you’ll listen to today as an American.  The story that inspired Sir Francis Scott Key to write his historic poem that became our national anthem
Epic version – just beautiful
Jimmy Hendrix at Woodstock 1969 (don’t hate him, love him)
Boston – my favorite rock version (don’t hate them either)
And, here’s another patriotic song, certain to squeeze out a tear, perfect for the occasion, “America The Beautiful” from the amazing Ray Charles

Stay safe…  Stay healthy…  And by all means (unless you feel the need to pause and honor our flag and the Star Spangled Banner) STAY HOME!!…
