I’m so Confused; Fourth country in America that performs the most tests; Safe conduit abnormalities; New strategy against Covid-19 in Chiriquí; Goofy’s Gift

We live in confusing times.  I love to reminisce on how 2019 sucked, yet not quite as much as it does now.  Every day is challenging in that I never know what we’re really supposed to be doing.  Should I stay home?  Should I go out?  Do I have COVID or is this sensation just a result of Queen Sayira’s experimental cooking?  Do I wear the mask?  Do I not wear the mask?  Is that person a boy, a girl, another gender?  Which pronoun should I use for them?  What do we define as to be a peaceful protest?  Is this the right type of statue that I can knock over?  How do you define “tolerance”?  Dry law, not dry law?  School, no school?  It’s gotten overwhelming.

But nothing has been more confusing for me than how my relationship with Queen Sayira has changed in just the last 4 months.  We’re still crazy in love… …well, at least I’M still crazy in love.  Right now, she’s taking a nap, so I’ll have to ask her about that later.  But there’s no doubt that our relationship has changed to something nearly unrecognizable from what it was just a few months ago. It’s totally confusing and each passing day is a challenge for me as I practically guess my way from one moment to the next with her.

I’ll give you just a few examples.

She usually gets up in the morning before me, because she likes to exercise before getting to work. I’ve always preferred exercising in the afternoon; at my age, the day gives me time to limber my body up before having to actually use it. Nowadays, under quarantine, she’ll still get up early to work out, but she does so online with our nephew Alejandro. But, that’s not the change I’m referring to. Before, she used to leave me alone in my blissful slumber until my alarm would go off.

However, for whatever reason, since around the middle of April, she now enters the room sounding off with a triumphant “Yeah Baby!”, and then immediately goes on to explain what she did during her entire workout routine. Sometimes she even adds background music, to the tune of AC/DC’s “Thunder Struck”. She has this entire choreograph she made up to go along with it too… She even “air guitars”! (I should have NEVER taught her about that.) She has soooooo much energy from working out at that time of the morning, but guess what?…. I DON’T!!!

But that’s not even the worst part of it. Once she realizes she has my attention, for which I’ve naturally become somewhat numb to her morning ritual, sometimes she’ll hover over me and ask me “The Question”!! (Imagine lightning strikes followed by the colossal sound thunder as I say it… THE QUEEESTIOOOOON!!!)And that question is: “You know what we should do today?” OK, for those of you who’ve been married over 10 years, you know what I’m talking about and I apologize for creating that horrible sensation from reading those words. But my story MUST be told. For you younger readers out there, you need to understand what this really means. If your significant other starts asking you, “You know what we should do today?”, your body will eventually naturally establish a fight or flight response somewhere during the course of your relationship. The more often they suggest it, the quicker your body will adjust. Hopefully, by reading this, you’ll be well ahead of the game and you can adjust quicker than most. For you see, nothing, NOTHING, good comes after that question. Never in the history of that question did anything fun, amazing or awesome ever come for the person on the receiving end of said question.

Prior to quarantine, Queen Sayira would follow that question up with something like, “We should go to Multiplaza and get that gift for my cousin. It’s her birthday this weekend.” Cue the Fight or Flight response.

“Wh-wh-why do I need to go?”, I’d stammer.

“So, you can help me pick something out!”, she’d say cheerfully.

“But honey blossoms, I really don’t care what you want to get her.” And that’s when I get in trouble for telling the truth. I mean, c’mon, the best way for us both to be happy during that process of purchasing some obscure gift for her cousin that I’ve only met twice would be for her to go shopping and for me to go fishing! Am I not right? But now, it’s even worse. On quarantine, we can’t leave the house, let alone go to the mall where at least I could sneak off to the Electronics store, or just watch other stupid humans like myself in their natural habitat. The cringe factor is so intense when she says it while we’re on quarantine, because I know it means that I’ll either have to fix something, clean something, fix something that isn’t broken, invent something, clean yet something else, or organize wedding pictures. (We haven’t done that in our 13+ years of marriage and I know she’s going to spring that one on me any freaking day now.) It also means, not what WE will do, but what I, ME, MOI, must do. Fight or flight kicks in again.

“But snookums, I need to cut the lawn today, feed the hummingbirds, fix the boat, clean the tool shed, vacuum the ceiling, prove string theory, adopt more stray animals…”, “STOP!”, she cuts me off.

“Actually, I created a power point presentation on what ‘we’ will be doing and interestingly enough, it doesn’t mention any of those projects.”, she clarifies. The Queen hath spoken. No fun shall be had.

The other example I’d like to share is about recycling. When we met, neither of us recycled. In all fairness, it wasn’t a “thing” in Panama back 15 years ago, at least not like it is now. But more recently, Sayira started on this project to save the world and it took me a bit to get on board with her. I was totally in favor of doing it, I just didn’t know the rules. No, actually, I didn’t know HER rules and she definitely didn’t make it easy to learn. For this, there was no Sayira-inspired creative power point presentation, either.

It first started with Tetra Pak products. But she didn’t tell me that we started with Tetra Pak. Actually, she didn’t tell me that we started recycling anything. So little ol’ me on garbage day, strolls through the house looking for trash in the bins and anything that looked “trashy” laying around, when low and behold, I saw them. “What in the heck is this bag of milk cartons doing under this table? Boy, that’s a stupid thing to leave laying around.”, I sagely pondered in deep thought. The following day, I was approached by a wildly intent fiend who was not strikingly comparable to my lovely wife whatsoever and coincidentally came storming from our very own pantry. This unknown brute-like mess was ablaze and these evil words began to spew from its seething maw.

“YOU #%$&%#, WHERE ARE MY TETRA PAK!?!?!??!?!” Something told me that I actually knew this creature, but I was still in awe from its bitterness.

“Well, beast of whom I’ve never met before, if you mean the ones that my beautiful wife had strangely collected and placed beneath that little table, I threw them out on garbage day.”, I replied hesitantly.

“WHY WOULD YOU DO SUCH A THING?!?! I WORKED SO HARD!!!”

That’s when I realized this mythical thing was actually my wife in some Disney-style transformation. Me being the brilliant human that I am, decided foolishly once again to simply reply with the truth, “I threw them out, because they no longer had milk in them. And I know they didn’t have milk in them, because just the other day I finished one off and thought to myself, ‘we should get more milk, because these are now empty’”. That didn’t go well. That never goes well. If you’ll allow me to be sincere, this was the exact scenario every step of the way as we moved on from Tetra Pak to plastic bottles, to egg cartons and so on. But nooooooooow, I’m totally confused. Because of the pandemic, we can’t leave the house. We can’t leave the house equates to “we can’t take stuff to the recycling place on Wednesdays”. (By the way, we used to do that on Wednesdays and I’m so proud that I actually still remember that.) For a brief time, the roles reversed. Here I was diligently collecting milk cartons and empty egg containers, but my stash under the table would disappear.

“Honey muffin, do you know where the Tetra Pak milk carton thingies are that I’ve been saving?”, I’d lovingly ask her.

“Yes, I threw them away.”, she’d say with nonchalant swagger.

I think my eye just twitched for the rest of the day and I left it at that. But then, I started noticing that we never ran out of bottled water. I mean, I was drinking several of the 600ml bottles every day, but our inventory never dropped. And if that weren’t odd enough, the empty bottles would just disappear on their own from wherever I decided to leave them. Just so you know, I had gotten really creative about my bottle abandonment. It eventually became a game for me, where I would try hiding them everywhere as if they were Easter Baskets and they would still disappear every time. (Full quarantine does things to your mind.) Finally, one day, the flaming Tetra Pak beast had reconjured itself and was ripe with naughty-speak once again.

In a deep howl the beast bellowed, “WHY ARE YOU HIDING PLASTIC BOTTLES BEHIND THE TOILETS, UNDER THE BEDS, IN THE CUPBOARDS AND IN MY PANTY DRAWER!?!?!?!?”

“Well, beast whom I’ve only met twice in my life, first of all, I didn’t know you had a panty drawer in this dimension and secondly, I was just conducting experiments in the confines of my own dwelling; experiments of which do not concern you.”

It covered its face, calmed down, shrunk to the size of a normal human and slowly reverted to its original form (AKA “Queen Sayira”) but not before speaking under its breath, in one final regurgitation, “How could I have possibly married such an idiot?”

Yoli’s Summary

Research by Harvard University finds that anosmia is unlikely to remain permanently once the infection has been overcome.

Among the effects that coronavirus usually causes in people affected by the disease are loss of smell and taste. These are the neurological symptoms of this condition, the appearance of which has been recorded in a multitude of COVID-19 patients. For this reason, a team of scientists from the Harvard Medical School has carried out an investigation whose results have been collected by the journal Science Advances.

Temporary loss of smell is the main neurological symptom and one of the earliest and most commonly reported indicators of COVID-19.

Thus, as the study has revealed, the loss of smell, a condition known as anosmia, occurs in these patients because the virus infects a type of nerve cells in the nasal cavity that are not neurons but support cells (glial cells). The researchers reached this conclusion after testing infected patients, healthy people, and animals for several months.

Loss of smell is not permanent

“Our findings indicate that the new coronavirus changes the sense of smell in patients, not directly infecting neurons but affecting the function of supporting cells,” explains the head of the research, Sandeep Robert Datta. This concretion has allowed scientists to determine that coronavirus infection is unlikely to permanently damage olfactory neural circuits.

“I think that’s good news, because once the infection clears up, olfactory neurons don’t seem to need to be replaced or rebuilt from scratch,” says Sandeep Robert Datta, who nonetheless stresses the need for more testing to confirm the results of the study. “We need more data and a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms to confirm this conclusion,” he says.

ENTREPRENEURS EXPECT OPENING OF OTHER ACTIVITIES DEPENDING ON THE INCREASE OF CAPACITY OF THE HEALTH SYSTEM

With the strengthening of the health system, through the use of convention centers to attend to cases of COVID-19, the business sector hopes that it will allow itself to open some activities in Block 3, to reactivate the economy and face the unprecedented crisis due to the one that passes the country.

Yesterday, in the provinces of Coclé, Herrera and Los Santos some of the activities of block 3 were opened. Jean Pierre Leignadier, president of the Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture of Panama (Cciap), said that the health crisis worries the However, the population considers that the figure of 20% of the unemployed that was estimated for the end of December will most likely go ahead to the next two or three months.

For the president of the Cciap, the Coclé, Herrera and Los Santos regions, beyond agriculture, represent a small percentage of economic activity in general, however, it is positive news.

“What we hope is that with the opening next week, the incorporation of beds in the Figali Convention Center and an improvement in the RT index will give more openness to revive the economy,” he said.

In this sense, he reiterated that we must be aware that new cases arise, so that people must follow the measures of mask use, hand washing and physical distancing.

Leignadier indicated that since the start of the pandemic the business sector has contributed with program support, equipment delivery and aid to affected people.

He adds that in recent weeks they have exchanged experiences with other countries in the region, which is why Panama lagged behind in terms of preventive work in community areas, hence several groups have come together to support some initiatives that seek to reduce the number of people arriving at hospitals with COVID-19, aid that will be concentrated in the densest communities.

He insists that the opening of more than 8 activities has been considered based on their low risk of agglomeration, but as the months go by and with so many suspended contracts there is a migration from the formal to the informal economy, in the latter, he says that there is less control over biosecurity measures.

In addition, the opening of the same activities that were resumed in Coclé, Herrera and Los Santos has been proposed to put them to work in the areas of Panama and West Panama, depending on the increase in the capacity of the health system and COVID-19 contagion rate is reduced.

ANOMALIES FOUND IN AUDITS CONDUCTED IN THE ISSUE OF SAFE CONDUCT

The Ministry of Commerce and Industries (MICI) carried out audits of the passports that have been issued by various people, detecting various irregularities.

In five days that they have been carrying out this task, thousands of safe-conducts have been declined, since they have detected the sale of these, illegally through social networks.

Given this, there are already five complaints filed with the Public Ministry, in which four people of foreign nationality and one Panamanian are involved.

Another of the ways that have been detected for the issuance of fraudulent safe-conducts is the use of the Panama Emprende platform, to request an operation notice from companies that do not exist.

Luis Guerra, MICI advisor indicated that the worst thing is that there are companies with operating notices, with permitted activity, they are lending themselves to incorporate people who are not working.

ENTREPRENEURS PROMOTE STRATEGY FOR PATIENTS WITH COVID-19 TO STAY AT HOME

CCIAP indicated that the objective of the strategy is to lower cases and avoid saturation of the health system.

The Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture of Panama (CCIAP) promotes a strategy to support the work of the health authorities in early care and sanitary measures in areas of greater contagion from COVID-19.

José Ramón Icaza, vice president of CCIAP, explained that the action plan is to provide patients with basic food and medicine.

He explained that the objective of the strategy is to prevent patients from having to leave their homes, and thus lower cases and avoid saturation of the health system.

“Currently, in Panama, fifteen percent of people who are detected the virus through a test end up in a hospital and five percent in an intensive care unit, what this initiative seeks is to reduce this,” he said.

Icaza said that this strategy was developed after a series of meetings with members of the private sector from various cities in the region, for the exchange of practices against Covid-19, for its application in Panama.

MERCHANTS PROTEST AGAINST SANCTIONS FROM ACODECO

The merchants of the Market of Supplies of La Chorrera protested this Tuesday, July 28 after being sanctioned by the Authority for the Protection of the Consumer and Defense of Competition (Acodeco).

The onion is selling above the price established in the price control, so consumers made the report to Acodeco.

However, merchants explain that they cannot sell it at the 80 cents that price control establishes as they would incur losses.

“If we buy the 50-pound sack of onion for $ 60, it’s going to be $ 1.20 (the onion). And they want us to sell at 80 cents. You can’t do that!” Said Florentina Núñez, a vendor at the Mercado de Abastos.

Acodeco detailed that they have received reports that the onion is selling between 90 cents and $ 1.50.

They also pointed out that they applied sanctions to merchants who did not have prices in sight.

FRANCISCO SÁNCHEZ CÁRDENAS: ‘IT WILL TAKE THE MONTH OF AUGUST TO CONTROL THE INFECTION CURVE’

Panama accumulates more than 60 thousand cases of coronavirus.

The doctor Francisco Sánchez Cárdenas warned that, unfortunately, many people will still die in Panama because of the new coronavirus.

Dr. Francisco Sánchez Cárdenas, a member of the advisory council, warned that Panama still has a lot of work to do and that the more than 60,000 accumulated cases of coronavirus are just the tip of the iceberg.

Sánchez believes that the country needs the will of its people and the capacity, resources and agility of private companies to get out of this crisis.

“I repeat again. The contagion figures will not go down. This is not a common cold. It will take August to control the infection curve. Many people will die, unfortunately, still,” said the neurosurgeon, in an analysis presented in your Twitter account.

On Sunday, for the first time, Panama managed to overcome the barrier of 4,000 daily tests, a figure that for this Monday is 3,465.

In this sense, Cárdenas believes that it is essential to continue doing thousands of tests.

“The 4 thousand tests are the living example of why we have to do many tests. The 60 thousand accumulated positives are the tip of the Iceberg. What is below is enormous,” he said.

Regarding the most recent measures taken by the Ministry of Health (Minsa), the doctor explained that the results could be seen in two months.

“The effects of the comprehensive traceability strategy, with many tests, isolates, a new treatment protocol, the home medication kit, personnel reinforcement, personnel protection, etc. will be seen in August and September,” said Cárdenas.

The doctor, meanwhile, believes that if the population complies with the simple security protocols such as masks, hand washing, use of gel and distancing, the crisis could emerge faster.

“That is neither expensive nor difficult,” said the specialist.

The health doctor, Ramón Betancourt indicated that before the increase in infections and the prolongation of the COVID-19 pandemic, the community must prepare, including to produce part of their food.

“The population must react positively and get involved in the fight against COVID-19, with discipline and show solidarity with the most vulnerable people and families,” said Dr. Betancourt.

Dr. Betancourt stressed that, given the current situation, it is necessary to re-implement a preventive health model, with the participation of civic clubs, associations, unions, business unions, churches, community boards and with the support of MINSA and other institutions. of the State.

The representative of the Pedregal township, one of those most affected by COVID-19, Rito Barret, supported the Minsa initiative, warning that the pandemic is a problem for all residents.

UBER AND UBER EATS PLATFORMS WILL NOW ACCEPT DEBIT (CLAVE) CARD

The Uber and Uber Eats applications announced that, starting on July 28, both platforms will accept the Clave card as a payment method. The alliance provides more options and convenience for app users, supporting them in achieving efficient and reliable mobility, Uber said in a statement.

For Gabriel Gutiérrez, Uber general manager for Panama and the Caribbean, “this alliance with Telered is a sign of our continued commitment to our user community. Now users have the flexibility to pay using the method that suits them best, directly from the Uber and Uber Eats platforms”.

Alexander Acosta, CEO and CEO of Telered explained that the strategic alliance between Telered and Uber will allow Sistema Clave cardholders to use their card on the Uber and Uber Eats platforms. “This agreement reaffirms our commitment as a company to continue innovating through our services, for the benefit of Panamanian consumers. With strategic partners such as Uber, Telered ratifies its commitment to deliver more and better services to its customers, this time accompanying them in the shops and applications that are part of their day-to-day life and that in the current situation are becoming of high value due to the possibility of making transactions from the comfort of the house without having to leave ”.

Acosta stressed that the Clave System is the debit card with the largest number of customers in Panama and a large part of this population does not have an additional electronic means of payment for this product.

“From now on, these cardholders, some already users of the Uber and Uber Eats platforms, will be able to recharge their wallet, or Uber wallet, with their Clave card, using their funds in the mobility services that Uber offers , such as UberX and Uber Flash; They will also be able to place orders to more than 350 restaurants and shops that are within the Uber Eats platform, ”he said.

Currently, more than 2.2 million Sistema Clave cards are in use throughout the country. “For more than 28 years, the Clave brand has accompanied the Panamanian population, being a safe and reliable payment method for making purchases, payments and recharges through different channels such as ATM and points of sale in more than 50,000 establishments in Panama. Now we are entering to enable the possibility for users to make purchases in e-commerce. In this first stage, more than 1.6 million cards of the linked Banks will be able to make this type of transaction”.

CABINET COUNCIL AUTHORIZES PAYMENT OF MORE THAN $ 21 MILLION TO ENERGY DISTRIBUTORS

The Cabinet Council authorized the incorporation of 21 million 211 thousand 620 dollars to the Tariff Stabilization Fund (FET) to partially compensate the electricity distribution companies for the contributions granted to their clients with a Simple Low Voltage rate and consumption of up to 300 kilowatts during the months of January, February, March and April 2020.

Resolution 42 of July 21 of this year indicates that taking into account that the distribution companies have applied the corresponding discounts on the invoice to the final electricity customers from the months of January to June 2020, they require the payment of said amounts all Once their cash flow has been affected, it is recommended to compensate the months of January, February, March and April, as a relief to the financial burden of these companies.

In addition, it indicates that it is necessary to incorporate into the Rate Stabilization Fund (FET) the sum of 21 million 211 thousand 620 as a partial contribution corresponding to the first half of the year, pending payment of the amounts referring to the months of May and June.

By means of this resolution, the Minister of Economy and Finance is authorized to manage and carry out all the necessary procedures and to transfer to the Electric Transmission Company (ETESA) in its capacity as trustee of the FET the sum detailed above and notify it to the Public Services Authority (ASEP) the effective date of the transaction.

Figures from the Office of the Comptroller General of the Republic, detail that in the first five months of the year residential energy consumption increased 7.7%, while in the commercial and industrial sector they decreased 19.8% and 26.6%, respectively.

The maximum demand for energy before 2020 was 1,961 megawatts (MW) registered on August 27, 2019. Last March 2, when classes started, the maximum demand reached 1,966 kilowatts per hour and last March 10, a day after the first case of coronavirus in Panama, the energy demand reached 1,969 kilowatts per hour. Now per month we are registering an approximate demand of 600 thousand kilowatts per hour.

Gustavo Bernal, an expert in energy issues, pointed out that the distributors have a serious financial problem because their accounts receivable have increased and they have also ceased to have incomes above 40%.

“In 2019, distributors had revenues of $ 900 million in six months, which means that they have stopped receiving more than $ 300 million during these quarantine months,” he said.

The state has given it certain subsidies, but that does not mean that these distributors are in good financial health, “he added.

In the middle of last March, President Laurentino Cortizoannounced a 30% reduction for those who consume from 301 kilowatt hours onwards, and 50% for those who consume up to 300 kilowatt hours.

The measure was applied for a period of three months (April, May and June) automatically. But for the month of July, consumers had to apply for a moratorium extension.

In addition, citizens would have to cancel the debt with their distributor within a period of three years.

WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION: MAINTAINING BORDER CLOSURE IS AN UNFEASIBLE STRATEGY

So far, the virus has infected more than 16 million people and left nearly 650,000 dead worldwide.

Maintaining border closures to deal with the new coronavirus pandemic is an unfeasible strategy, the World Health Organization (WHO) said yesterday.

“Keeping international borders closed is not necessarily a viable strategy,” said Michael Ryan, WHO director for emergency situations, during a telematic press conference.

“It will be practically impossible for countries to keep their borders closed in the near future,” he said.

“Economies must reopen, people must work, trade must resume,” he admitted, although he recognized that each State must individually consider what the risks of opening are.

Many countries are closing their borders to travelers from risky areas, or imposing quarantines and tests, but without a concerted strategy.
“It is very difficult to have a policy that suits everyone. If I’m a small nation with no Covid-19 cases, a single (imported) case can spell disaster. In a country where the incidence of the disease is important, closing the borders may not make a difference, “he said.

“Travel restriction measures must be taken in conjunction with other measures, but only the first ones are not effective in limiting the spread of the coronavirus, which is everywhere,” he added.

Appointment

Meanwhile, the WHO Emergency Assessment Committee will meet this week, six months after declaring an international public health emergency due to the coronavirus outbreak, the organization’s director general announced yesterday.

“Thursday will mark the six months of the WHO declaration of Covid-19 as a public health emergency of international importance,” Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said at a telematic news conference.

On January 30, 2020 “there were less than 100 cases outside of China and no deaths” outside of that country, he recalled.

Since then, the pandemic has infected more than 16 million people and left nearly 650,000 dead worldwide.

In accordance with international health standards, WHO must meet again.

“This week I will meet again with the committee to reevaluate the pandemic and advise accordingly,” said Tedros, although there is no doubt that the international emergency will continue.

“During these past six months, WHO has worked tirelessly to support countries in their response to the virus. I am immensely proud of our organization”, declared Tedros, defending that the WHO had reacted in the first days to the appearance of the first cases.

Listing the different measures taken by the UN agency, he praised “incredible work”. “But we still have a long and difficult road ahead of us,” he added.

The WHO was widely criticized for being slow to declare a state of emergency, after the coronavirus was first reported in late December in China.

The United States, which accused the organization of being a “puppet” of China, and even of having been “bought” by Beijing, officially began its withdrawal from the institution in July.

END NOTES

My dogs are both Cocker Spaniel.  Mickey is the dad and is of the American Cocker Spaniel breed.  His son, Goofy takes after his mother, who was an English Cocker Spaniel.  These two are hunting dogs through and through.  They work as a team outside, flushing out any little creature that was daring enough to venture on to our property.  Every now and again, with the patience of a sleeping dragon, these two are successful in catching their prey.  Mickey pushes the animal and Goofy traps.  The curious thing about Goofy is that he’s smaller than his dad, by far, but jumps straight up about 5 feet from a standing position.  It’s amazing to see it and hard to imagine.

This weekend Goofy came out with a trophy for the first time in a while.  I didn’t notice what he had and first thought that he had a blade of grass in his mouth as he quickly ran in from his daily backyard escapades and went straight to his bed.  He usually only does that when he wants to hide food from his dad.  “Oh crap, what does he have?”, was the only thing that came to my mind.  I ran over and check it out.  Sure enough, there it was, a small iguana.  Usually he keeps them alive, but this was dead dead.  Like, really for real dead.  The poor thing probably had a heart attack as it was completely intact.  I quickly proceeded to scare the bageezies our of my wife and kids and then posed for this photo op.  Goofy is so proud of himself.  Just look at that face.

(“I bring food for you papá. Are you proud of me?”)
From Wikipedia, here’s a little more info on Cocker Spaniels:

The word spanyell is thought to date from the late 12th century when it was used to name a type of dog imported into England from Spain, with the span part of the word referring to the country of origin. Records from the mid-14th century show that selective breeding was already in place, with the breed being separated into two distinct types, called water spaniels and land spaniels. By 1801, the smaller variety of land spaniel was called the Cocker or Cocking Spaniel, so named for its use in flushing woodcock.

According to historical records, the first spaniel was brought to North America aboard the Mayflower which sailed from Plymouth, England and landed in New England in 1620. The first Cocker Spaniel recorded in America was a liver and white dog named Captain, who was registered with the American Kennel Club in 1878. In 1881, the American Cocker Spaniel Club was formed; it would later become the American Spaniel Club (ASC) and is now known as the oldest breed club for dogs in the United States.  The task of the club was initially to create a standard to separate the Cocker Spaniel in America from other types of land spaniels, a task which would take over 20 years, only being completed in 1905.

The dog considered to be the father of the American Cocker Spaniel was sired by the dog considered to be the father of the English Cocker Spaniel. Ch. Obo was bred to Ch. Chloe II, who was shipped to America while she was pregnant. Once in the United States, she whelped a dog who became Ch. Obo II. He differed greatly from the modern breed, being only 10 inches (25 cm) tall and with a long body, but was considered to be an excellent dog of that era and became a popular sire.

Stay safe… Stay healthy… And by all means (unless you’re chasing your dog down to take the animal from its jaws) STAY HOME!!…
