I love Mondays; Evacuation of the Hospital Complex; Banks make relief adjustments for clients; Request to reopen recycling industry; I’m Trying, I Really Am

Monday, August 10, 2020

Last week, I commented that Fridays are like New Years for me. But if Fridays are like New Years, then Mondays to me are synonymous with the joys of Christmas. Sunday evenings I‘ll even stay up involuntarily sleepless; anxious to begin my Monday plan of attack. So many complain about Mondays, while I’m truly enthralled with the work I do and the people I’m involved with. On any given day, I‘ll get going around 7 AM, but Mondays start especially early for me. You could say that Mondays start on Sunday for me. The advantage of working from home is getting to prepare my workspace the night before. This includes the ceremonious removal of the 30+ bottles of water, cleaning the accumulated salt residue and fly carcasses whose deaths amounted after the numerous battles I had partnered by my trusty military-grade Bug-A-Salt salt gun, and the general ridding of closed case files and unneeded scrap pieces of paper.

Once the area is cleared, I’ll review the list of items to attend to just to ensure I‘m not forgetting about some obscure meeting I‘ve foolishly promised to attend. The routine is to the point where I’m about to put out milk and sugar cookies for Santa Claus just to see what happens. Monday mornings are like Christmas because of all the magic and mystics that takes place the moment I open my eyes. Each new project is like a present that I can’t wait to open and start “playing with”. The project isn’t much of a surprise, but the way they play out during the week usually is. Who knows what’s going to happen? Will we eventually resolve the MICI Salvoconducto fiasco? Who will I have to beg this week to help us with that stolen property case? Transito? PN? Even as I write this, I’m truly more focused on my workload and the week ahead.

So, as we get going with the magic set before us this week, I hope you open your day with the same energy and excitement that I do.

Merry… Oops, I mean Happy MONDAY!!!

Yoli’s Summary

Millions of people have turned to eating better or buying supplements to help boost the immune system, now experts argue that vitamin D can protect you against the coronavirus, but there is a reason why.

In summary, low vitamin D levels are linked to COVID-19 infection and hospitalization, according to a study in Israel.

When doctors evaluated about 8,000 patients for risk factors for COVID-19 infection, a constant marker was low levels of vitamin D in the blood.

On the other hand, those without COVID-19 were less likely to have low levels of vitamin D.

Vitamin D metabolites have long been known to support innate antiviral effector mechanisms.

While there are other experts who argue that it is too early to say that vitamin D can reduce the risk of coronavirus, a report from the Lancet explains that the interest in the potential role of vitamin D in the prevention or treatment of acute respiratory infections It dates back to the 1930s, when cod liver oil was investigated as a means of reducing industrial absenteeism due to the common cold.

“Meta-analyzes of randomized controlled trials conducted between 2007 and 2020 reveal protective effects of vitamin D against acute respiratory infections, although these effects were modest in size and with substantial heterogeneity,” the report says.

The striking overlap between risk factors for severe COVID-19 and vitamin D deficiency, including obesity, old age, and black or Asian ethnicity, has led some researchers to hypothesize that vitamin D supplementation it could show promise as a preventive or therapeutic agent for COVID-19.

“From a mechanistic angle, there are good reasons to postulate that vitamin D favorably modulates host responses to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), both in the early viremic phase and in the later hyperinflammatory phase of COVID- 19, “says the report.

Vitamin D metabolites have long been known to support innate antiviral effector mechanisms.

Laboratory data relating to the effects of vitamin D on host responses to SARS-CoV-2 specifically are scarce, but a study examining four libraries of compounds for antiviral activity has reported an inhibitory effect of the active metabolite of vitamin D. vitamin D, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (the steroid hormone and biologically active metabolite of vitamin D) in human nasal epithelial cells infected with SARS-CoV-2.2

Vitamin D has also been shown to regulate immunopathological inflammatory responses in the context of other respiratory infections. So for now, the vitamin is still being promoted to boost the immune system. However, it is not promoted as a treatment or to prevent, instead the use of masks is still encouraged.

THE OFFICE ANNOUNCES RESTRICTIONS TO BE LIFTED ON NATIONAL PASSENGERS AND RESIDENTS, AND COPA WILL RESUME FLIGHTS TO 8 COUNTRIES

The return of Panamanians was subject to a schedule and restrictions established by the Minsa.

The Foreign Ministry of Panama reported on Thursday that the restrictions on the entry to the country of nationals and residents were lifted, something that was subject to the procedures of the Ministry of Health (Minsa) due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“Without the approval of humanitarian flights, they will be able to return to their homes sooner in these difficult times,” the Foreign Ministry reported on its social networks.

Following this, Copa Airlines announced that it will resume flights from Tocumen airport, to 11 destinations in eight countries.

Panama has prohibited commercial passenger transportation since March 23. Since then, only cargo and humanitarian flights have been carried out, with the prior consent of the Minsa.

The Foreign Ministry did not inform when the new regulations come in, since that is the responsibility of the Minsa, which must issue the corresponding Executive Decree.

“The lifting of announced restrictions will be effective from the date indicated in the Executive Decree that will issue @MINSAPma who will explain the details,” said the Foreign Ministry.

In this regard, the Copa company specified that it is not yet selling air tickets because it is awaiting the regulations issued by the Minsa.

On the other hand, the Foreign Ministry specified that the humanitarian flights scheduled from the US cities of Miami and Washington, for August 10 and 12, respectively, remain as such.

Last Wednesday, President Laurentino Cortizo had announced that this new measure for national passengers and residents of Panama would apply next week.

The president said that these people will have to present a negative swab result 48 hours prior to arrival. Also, comply with a 14-day quarantine upon arrival in Panama.

BUSINESSMEN REACT ON THE RECOMMENDATION BY THE US FOR THEIR CITIZENS TO NOT TRAVEL TO PANAMA DUE TO COVID-19

Businessmen urge the government and the population to work harder so that the warning that the United States government made to its citizens is lifted, that Panama is a risk country to travel at this time, due to its high rates of COVID-19.

This is the announcement posted on the website of the United States Embassy in Panama. The State Department lifted a level 4 global travel advisory, advising US citizens not to travel to Panama due to COVID-19.

So far, the Panamanian government has not reacted, but in the business sector, this adds to already existing concerns. The businessman Severo Sousa said that “to the extent that other countries follow the United States and begin to quarantine us internationally, obviously the crisis is going to worsen.

Then, an alert call is made to the government and citizens to put more effort to overcome the crisis, so as not to exacerbate the other crisis, which is the economic and social one. “Through a tweet it was added that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a level 3 travel health advisory for Panama.

That travelers may experience border closures, airport closures, travel bans, stay-at-home orders, business closures, and other emergency conditions due to the pandemic.

The president of the Chamber of Tourism of Panama, Ernesto Orillac, urged that “the whole country, civic clubs, private companies and the people in general face this disease, find a way to reduce infections and lower deaths. I believe that Panama can achieve it and we are working on that.

Regarding the work that we have to do with the Panama Chamber of Tourism together with the Tourism Authority, seek communication with the United States Embassy to communicate and be able to download this travel notice that affects us. “

The notice also advises not to travel to the Gulf of Mosquitoes, in Panama, because there is drug trafficking and other illicit activities in this area. It is also advised not to travel to some places in Darien, due to criminal elements and drug trafficking networks and people who operate in these areas.

32 PATIENTS WERE EVACUATED FROM THE CSS COMPLEX ON THE TRANSISTMIC ROUTE

As a security measure, the building was vacated.

The building of the Social Security Fund (CSS) known as La Especializada, on the Trans-isthmic road, was partially evacuated on the morning of this Friday, August 7, 2020, due to the leak of an “unknown substance”.

Both medical personnel and patients had to leave the place, as a security measure. As a result of this fact, no injuries or affected people were reported.

The product leak occurred in an operating room on the third floor. For prevention, floors 2 and 4 also had to be evacuated. The event was reported around 9:00 a.m.

Einar Cruz, head of the national department of emergency management and patient transport, reported that 32 patients, who do not have Covid-19, were evacuated as a preventive measure. He indicated that a review of the building was made, which “is safe” and the area is “stable.”

The general director of the CSS, Enrique Lau Cortés, went to the hospital complex to learn of the event.

The official said that, according to what he was informed, the substance whose leakage triggered the evacuation protocols does not pose a threat to people’s lives.

“The Panama Fire Department, together with members of the Complex Biosafety Committee, Occupational Health and the National Department of Emergency Management, Disasters and Patient Transport of the CSS, made a detailed review where this incident began. The important thing is to safeguard the lives of our patients and collaborators ”, expressed Lau Cortés.

“The fire brigade units are in the process of recognizing the substance in order to control it in the area where the incident occurred,” said Ángel Delgado, of the Panama Fire Department.

In its Twitter account, the CSS reported that all the protocols established for this type of situation were implemented.

“All functions are already being restored,” at the site, reported the head of the national department of emergency management and patient transport, after 11:30 a.m. of this Friday.

In a statement from the CSS, issued on Thursday afternoon, it was announced that Occupational Health personnel of the entity carried out measurements of the chemicals present, in addition to monitoring the environment in the operating room to rule out any irregularities. For safety the area is still evicted.

He says that after the evaluation it is presumed that the problem arises from the leakage of a trace of formaldehyde, a product used for the handling of corpses. “It could have leaked and reached the pipelines, spreading in the area.”

Those in charge of the investigation will prepare a report to publicize the results, he adds.

PROJECT THAT CREATES THE EMMA REGIME COULD GENERATE THOUSANDS OF JOBS IN PANAMA, WAITING FOR SANCTION FROM CORTIZO

The Minister of Commerce and Industries, Ramón Martínez referred to some economic recovery actions in Panama, the creation of jobs and the attraction of foreign direct investment. After the approval in the third debate of the bill that creates the Special Regime for the Establishment and Operation of Multinational Companies for the Provision of Services Related to Manufacturing (EMMA).

Project that creates the EMMA Regime pending the sanction of Cortizo. Atenógenes Rodríguez

The initiative, which awaits the sanction of President Laurentino Cortizo, already has multinational companies that are established in the country interested, “to expand and open other branches or businesses within their international conglomerates,” said Martínez.

With the project, the companies that request the license for this special regime must submit to the legal provisions on environmental matters, they must also assume the commitment to transfer technology and develop capacities, either through the creation of a technical education center for part of the multinationals as a whole.

As well as the adoption of training programs with universities or educational centers, for the training of national personnel, in order to integrate the Panamanian workforce required by companies.

In this sense, Martínez emphasizes that it is important for Panama to consolidate itself within the Americas as the “business hub.”

According to the head of the MICI, knowing that there are at least 160 headquarters of multinational companies in Panama, “with more than 7,200 jobs generated, the generation of thousands of jobs could be considered based on these numbers, not only direct generation but also indirect generation. Since when a company decides to open a production plant in a country, it needs the national industry, supplies, qualified service personnel, moves the real estate sector, the economy of shops, so it is a positive cascade effect ”.

With this new regime, multinational companies will be able to benefit from our privileged geographic position and our best comparative advantage: connectivity, through a comprehensive incentive regime that includes tax, immigration, labor and customs incentives, in addition to capitalizing on the benefits of existing special regimes (Free Zones, Colon Free Zone, Panama Pacifico, among others).

BANKS MAKE ADJUSTMENTS TO STOP THE EFFECTS OF COVID-19

Loans of more than $ 27 billion have been modified by banks as a result of the pandemic.

With an unemployment rate that could jump from 7% to 15% at the end of the year, it will be inevitable that a portion of the loans whose conditions have been modified today, due to the inability of bank clients to pay, end as bad loans.

Yesterday, the representatives of the Superintendency of Banks of Panama (SBP) spoke about the follow-up given to the current situation, marked by the paralysis of the economy and the increase in risks for the financial system. In this sense, they have established several risks that have been increasing, among which are consumer overindebtedness, increased delinquencies and maturity of debts.

At the moment, non-performing loans are under control, said Amauri Castillo, superintendent of Banks, but their behavior will depend on the deterioration of the macroeconomic variables of a country whose productive activities are working half-way or are totally paralyzed.

The suspension of labor contracts, unemployment and the possible closure of companies is a matter of “concern for the regulator, credit institutions and people. We are all in a difficult situation that we must manage with the best of care, “said Castillo.

In this sense, it is recognized as an alarm the fact that 242 thousand people are with suspended contracts (until yesterday), and therefore, do not have their recurring income.

The seriousness of this labor panorama has not been reflected in the delinquency rate of the loans due to the fact that modifications were established in the terms and conditions originally agreed, grace periods, changes in terms and adjustments in interest rates, in addition of a moratorium until December 31 in different types of commercial and consumer loans.

Under this new reality, the category of modified loans was created, with which the banks do not deteriorate the ratings of the debtor’s loans and, therefore, the entities are not obliged to make provisions immediately.

However, given the extension of the confinement and the delay in the reopening of certain activities, the banks have spontaneously increased their provisions to cover loans that could fall into the category of past due or uncollectible starting next year.

Javier Motta, director of Financial Studies of the SBP, revealed that at this moment there are $ 1,500 million in reserves, to cover “more than” the balances due to date.

And it is calculated that, for the first semester of 2021, these provisions to cover past due loans will increase to $ 2,200 million.

According to the banking regulator’s record, the mortgage sector maintains a delinquency of 5.5%, and commerce, of 5.3%; while the consumer portfolio has around 4%; construction, about 4.5%, and the agricultural sector, 6%.

These are percentages very similar to those that the SBP has been managing since last March, precisely because of the payment arrangements that today are part of the dynamics in the relationship between banks and customers.

But next year, when there is a total opening of the economy and unemployment data is known, then a more accurate assessment can be made on the subject and its effects on the classification of loans, Motta said.

The unemployment level may be 15% or more, “and this will impact the level of reserves, which is the mechanism that the regulator and banks have so that the lack of payments does not impact savers,” said Motta.

Until the month of July, the banks in the Panamanian plaza had modified more than one million loans with balances above $ 27 billion.

Castillo, for his part, pointed out that they observe as a positive symptom the fact that banks have spontaneously increased their reserves to cover loans that fall into the past due category next year.

Despite the difficulties created by the current situation, the SBP has stated that the foundations of the banking system as a whole show the strength to face the economic consequences of the pandemic.

The SBP projects that the local economy will fall 6.3% at the end of this year, due to its paralysis and the uncertainty in which the various productive activities of the country are, as a result of the pandemic.

The Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) projects a decrease between 8% and 9% for this year.

The projections they make, however, could be adjusted to the extent that the observed risks prevail.

THROUGH VOICE AND COUGH A NEW SYSTEM WILL HELP DETECT COVID-19

Muhannad Ismael, is responsible for the initiative.

A group of researchers from Luxembourg is about to launch a system to detect COVID-19 through voice and cough, which will allow better remote diagnosis and reduce the risks of contagion through physical contact between doctors and patients.

The project, dubbed CDCVA (COVID-19 Detection by Cough and Voice Analysis), proposes an “innovative approach”, based on artificial intelligence, to detect the virus based on the voice and cough patterns of affected people, it explains Muhannad Ismael, responsible for the initiative.

“Respiratory conditions such as dry cough, sore throat, and dyspnea caused by COVID-19 can make patients’ voices different, creating identifiable voice signatures, which can be recognized using our system,” he says.

It is not the first time that a similar initiative has been carried out.

The University of Cambridge and the University of Carnegie Mellon have developed an application and a platform, respectively, to collect data and create Artificial Intelligence algorithms that allow to automatically detect if a person suffers from COVID-19 from the way they cough or speak .

However, the expert explains, all the initiatives so far serve to collect data but there is no application available to detect COVID-19 from voice and cough.

“Our idea is inspired by advanced research … for sound analysis, such as automatically recognizing people with a cold by the acoustics of their voice or distinguishing between a dry and a wet cough,” he adds.

To develop the system, a large number of voice records and cough recordings have to be collected, which are then processed through a series of methods, in order to eliminate noise and identify cough and voice patterns.

“The ability to successfully identify COVID-19 patients from their voices is highly dependent on collecting a large data set containing voices and coughs from COVID-19 patients.”

Records must also be taken of healthy people and individuals who may suffer from other respiratory conditions.

The COVID-19 pandemic is having a huge impact on health systems around the world, collapsing hospitals and generating a significant number of infections among health professionals.

RNA (diagnostic) tests, immunological tests and Rapid tests are currently used to diagnose coronavirus.

“However, these methods require a physical consultation, which increases the risk of infection for staff and patients and consumes many resources in health systems,” explains Muhannad Ismael.

The system in which this group of researchers works, however, is not intended to replace the other types of tests, but rather to be complementary, providing “a preliminary auxiliary evaluation of the health status” of large population groups, without endangering health professionals Health.

The same expert indicates that “it could be used as an assistance tool for clinical decision making for the selection of candidates who will have priority in standard laboratory tests, when the number of tests is limited and should be used infrequently”.

Furthermore, it could help, for example, emergency services to manage the volume of calls to identify critical cases that require rapid intervention.

The platform that will collect the data and will be launched in September, will be accessible in eight languages (English, French, German, Luxembourgish, Spanish, Russian, Serbian and Arabic) to reach the largest number of participants from around the world.

In addition to voice data, you will gather information on age, gender, country, smoking habits, symptoms, comorbidities (eg, asthma, allergies, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, etc.), and test status of COVID-19.

The information will be anonymous, to protect privacy and prevent the participants from being identified.

VALE DIGITAL WILL START OPERATION AT THE FIRST STORE STARTING TOMORROW IN PARQUE LEFEVRE

The administrator of the Government Innovation Authority (AIG), Luis Oliva announced that starting tomorrow the first grocery store that will use the digital voucher system will start operating and it is located in Parque Lefevre.

This announcement was made known in the Face to Face Program on Telemetro, where Oliva indicated that there is a new process that will allow grocery stores to also pay for the purchase of their products with the digital voucher he received from people.

“We know that they are small businesses that often do not have enough resources to make a collection management towards the government and the distributors are going to collaborate by doing that collection management with the government and they will allow them to receive the digital voucher in exchange for the products, ”said Oliva.

The digital voucher must work in stores, grocery stores and distributors in the same way as in supermarkets and pharmacies, for the purchase of food, medicines and cleaning supplies.

“We have been working with the Ministry of Commerce, Acodeco and the Joint Task Force because it is not only so that things are not bought that are not endorsed by the decree, which are food, medicine and cleaning supplies, but also, in many cases speculation has been generated that they want to increase the prices of the products because the store in the area is probably the only one that has the use of the digital voucher ”, clarifies the administrator of the AIG.

They ask citizens to make their complaints through line 311 if they find any type of report they can do so, as well as the misuse of the digital voucher that they are buying liquor or with products that has nothing to do with the Solidarity Plan program. do it through line 140.

He indicated that they will have a group that will be doing inspections and sanctioning them. First they will be decertified so they can use the digital voucher.

“This system is designed in a very good way, because the data is recorded, people have to sign and one of the things we want is that the moment people are taught is that they have to sign the receipt now be the phone screen or either on the physical receipt that the grocery store gives you, “said Oliva.

He stressed that they will be aware of all the information, they also have algorithms that will be crossing it to identify situations that are out of the ordinary.

Through the Ministry of Commerce, around 20 grocery stores were selected with the distributors, of which 10 were chosen in the first phase, in the places where the digital voucher has been released and which will be released soon.

He announced that it is expected that the digital voucher can also be used in the subway and in other needs that are urgent for citizens and are currently being evaluated.

ORGANIZATIONS AND COMPANIES REQUEST THE GOVERNMENT TO OPEN THE RECYCLING INDUSTRY

Recycling of plastic bottles.

Several organizations and companies urged the Government to open the recycling industry to support the cleaning and sanitation of the country, complying with the respective biosafety protocols for workers, customers and suppliers.

The request has been made through a statement published on social networks this Sunday, August 9. According to the organizations, the recycling industry in Panama collects approximately 6,000 metric tons (13.2 million pounds) of waste per month throughout the country.

“This helps to collect garbage for the benefit of the country’s health and means a lower cost for the treatment of garbage in landfills due to the reduction of waste. In addition, directly and indirectly, about 5,000 families Panamanians depend on this activity “, indicates the note.

Ancón highlights that, during the pandemic, several countries have taken into account the importance of recycling and have kept the companies dedicated to this activity open, Panama being one of the few countries that remain pending due to its reactivation.

Meanwhile, they request the Government to restart this activity in its global cycle of collection, processing, distribution and export in order to support the cleanliness and sustainability of the country, maintaining the respective biosafety protocols. Among the signatory organizations, entities and companies are: the Chamber of Recycling of Panama, Municipality of Panama, National Brewery, Coca-Cola System, Ancon, Nestlé, Morgan Metal, Ecological Network, Pro-Mar Foundation, Biocar SA, Costa Foundation Recycle, Total Recycling of America, Trashforma and Recimetal.

BRAZIL EXPECTS TO BEGIN MASS PRODUCTION OF THE OXFORD VACCINE IN DECEMBER

Brazil, one of the countries in which the vaccine against the new coronavirus developed by the British University of Oxford is being tested, expects to begin mass production of it in December, the responsible state laboratory reported on Friday.

“We are working on two fronts and the first is the final processing, which is from the receipt of the active pharmaceutical ingredient, which is the vaccine concentrate and will arrive frozen. Here we will carry out the final process,” Mauricio Zuma told EFE. director of BioManguinhos.

That final process, Zuma explained, consists of “the formulation, packaging, labeling, packaging and quality control of this entire process, which is the first phase that we will do as of December.”

BioManguinhos, the immunobiological production institute of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, the main medical research center in Latin America and linked to the Ministry of Health, will also receive, in all its phases, the technology for the production in Rio de Janeiro of the vaccine from of the next year.

“In parallel (to the completion) we will be absorbing the knowledge to also produce that viral concentrate here at BioManguinhos, in a building that is being prepared. They are simultaneous stages but they have a conclusion at different times”, explained the director.

According to Zuma, Doctor of Technology and Innovation Management from the University of Sussex (England), “the final processing will be faster and the production of the concentrated active ingredient will take a little longer.”

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro announced on Thursday the release of 1.9 billion reais (about 365.3 million dollars) for the entire completion process of the vaccine imported from the United Kingdom and for its own initial production, in 2021, by part of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation. ‘

The South American country, the second most affected by COVID-19 after the United States, accounted for almost three million confirmed cases and nearly 100,000 deaths as of Thursday.

Of the 100 million doses purchased by Brazil, 15.2 million are expected to arrive in December in January and another equal amount in January.

For the remaining almost seventy million doses, “we are defining the schedule” with the AstraZeneca laboratory, responsible for the development of the vaccine in British territory, highlighted Zuma, for whom the first vaccines will only be available to people from January.

“We have an entire quality control phase, which takes time and is a complex process, so until the vaccine is released it will only be available sometime in January,” said the head of the laboratory, who is also awaiting authorization from Anvisa , the Brazilian sanitary surveillance regulatory agency.

Zuma stressed that with the adaptation of the building that is being prepared for the mass production of the vaccine in Rio de Janeiro, the country will have the capacity to “process about 40 million doses per month”, although he warned that at the beginning it will not be concentrate available for all that amount.

Brazil, South Africa and recently the United States participate in the later phases of evaluating the efficacy of the vaccine in patients, after an initial positive result with 1,000 people in the United Kingdom in the previous one.

“The forecasts so far are favorable and give optimism that the vaccine will finally be approved,” Zuma said.

CORONAVIRUS: A MODERN VACCINE WILL COST LESS THAN $ 40

Pharmaceutical Moderna announced today that it hopes to offer its coronavirus vaccine at a price of between $ 32 and $ 37 per dose.

The value is at the “pandemic price” and will depend on the quantity demanded by the governments. The pharmaceutical company hopes to offer its product at a price between USD 10 and 20 lower than the stipulated price. Modern pharmaceutical company announced today that it expects to offer its vaccine against the coronavirus at a price of between USD 32 and 37 per dose, a “pandemic price”, which will depend on the volume that each country requests and hopes to guarantee its universal access.

“We are working with governments around the world and others to ensure that the vaccine is accessible regardless of ability to pay,” Moderna CEO Stephane Bancel said in a call with investors.

The price will be lower for those countries that request large volumes of doses, said the company, clarifying that a “small” order, for which the price range announced today would apply, would be of the order of several million doses. Meanwhile, the new value of Moderna’s product, which was the first to show signs of effectiveness, is between USD 10 and 20 lower than that stipulated weeks ago.

That price is above the USD 19.50 that Pfizer advanced for the vaccine that it develops together with the German BioNTech and that is, as in the case of Moderna, at the beginning of phase 3, the final stretch of clinical trials to certify its reliability and safety.

Moderna’s announcement was made at the presentation of the results for the second quarter of the year, in which the Massachusetts-based company multiplied its revenues by five to USD66.4 million.

That allowed the net loss to be cut by 13% to $ 116.7 million or $ 0.31 per share.

At the end of July, Moderna had already received USD 400 million in deposits to provide the mRNA-1273 vaccine, the distribution of which is already negotiating with several interested countries. Meanwhile, the US government disbursed USD 483 million in April and later another 472 million more for the development of its vaccine.

Moderna collaborates with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the development and clinical testing of the mRNA. 1273 vaccine, which uses messenger RNA technology and showed promising results in the first human trials.

END NOTES

I’ve come to realize that several of my readers don’t actually know me; most of those who do, only know me through photos.  For those who’ve only seen me through photos, you may not believe this, but beneath this aging well-fed 250lb northamerican exterior, there is a gentle soul full of warmth and sarcasm with an innate spirit to undertake new adventures.  My most recent adventure was getting back in to shape.  Yeah, I know, boooooring.  What’s made this fun is that we’ve slowly been discovering these boxes labeled “gym stuff” that I’ve had in our attic for a few years.  Some of which have been there for SEVERAL years.

Today, I found an old TRX in one of those boxes and thought, I could tie this off in the garage and add to the routines we’ve been doing to our workouts.

Step one actually meant I’d have to move the boat from its position.  I needed to do that anyways, so I cleaned it up properly, stored the gear still in it, covered it with the new tarp we purchased and moved it around to the side of the house.

Then, I thoroughly cleaned the carport which took most of the afternoon actually.

Finally, with ladder in place, I hoisted it and tied it off to the rafters of the garage and decided to do some pre-workout strength tests.  And by tests, I mean I told Queen Sayira to test it for me.  I figured, she’s shorter and if it breaks, she has less of a distance to fall than I do.

My trusting wife, conducting a visual inspection prior to attempting a couple TRX pull ups.

The first test went just fine and so we moved on to phase two of the resistance test for these 7yr old TRX home suspension training thingamabobs.  I took my position, inclined slightly and conducted one proper pullup.  It was good.  Then, I decided to push the bands to their limits and put the full brunt of my body at the most complicated position and…. ….well, here’s the result:

In use

So, I’m searching for a new TRX – if anyone has one that isn’t all too brittle and with factory specifications that indicate clearly, “Will Withstand the full weight of an extremely manly man who’s doing all in his power to stop the upward climb of the indicators on his digital scale”, please let me know. Amazon has them for over $120-$220 – I’m ready to get on the “find a used one, dirt cheap” band wagon.

Stay safe… Stay healthy… And by all means (unless you’re at the pharmacy buying ointment for your TRX-related injuries) STAY HOME!!…
