Good Humor at My Expense; Reopening of new economic activities; Opening of the Figali Convention Center for positive COVID-19 patients; Russia announces first vaccine; End Note Therapy

WEE WOO WEE WOO WEE WOO, WOOOOOT WOOOOT… My world is a symphony of onomatopoeia and that was my rendition of my recently installed “Naughty Word Proximity Alarm”.  It can’t distinguish between humorous naughty words or the words that come from my mouth when referring to MEDUCA and their weak attempts at educating the country’s youth.  On this particular occasion, I’m not going to badmouth the ignorance of any government entity (even though their feeble attempts are certainly worth the keyboard abuse).  Nope, today we’re going to talk about a few of the comical escapades I’ve run across through my own feeble attempts at expression through foreign languages.  Well, languages that are foreign to me, anyways.

On Monday, we innocently added an article relating to the change in protocol of humanitarian flights and how the government planned on modifying this in the following week.  What I didn’t do was go beyond “google translate”; I didn’t edit it.  With the amounting work and responsibilities, I’ve cut my reports from 5 days a week to 3 days a week and have slacked off a tad on reviewing what we were going to post to the group.

So, we put the report together, I opened my report with the recognizable blah blah blah and sent it off to my 556,123 subscribers (slightly exaggerated a-la-Donald).  Not more than a few minutes later, I get a chat from good friend Hunter, “Panama has prohibited commercial passenger transportation since March 23.  Since then, only shit and humanitarian flights have been carried out, with the prior consent of the MINSA.”  And then he added, “There is a bit of truth there.”

I think most people who take their reporting seriously would have had a heart attack… …seeing as I don’t take ANY of this seriously, I think I about peed myself laughing. I knew exactly what went wrong and returned to the original article to confirm it.  Sure enough, upon further review, the play stood as called… The original PRENSA article read, “Desde entonces, solo se ha llevado a cabo vuelos de cagar y humanitarios, previo consentimiento del MINSA.”  They used the vulgar verb “CAGAR” instead of the noun for “CARGA” (SHIT vs LOAD).  Our google translate version wasn’t wrong, but I should have at least explained the error in the report.  To funny!!

This immediately skyrocketed me back to my beginnings where I first started battling languages fresh out of Monterey, California and then Interrogation school.  I had 6 months of Arabic and then 6 months of Spanish under my belt and the power to persuade anyone.  My impressionable and fragile young mind was a jumble of knowledge and hormones and I had every intention of using both to my advantage.

Stage 1 – open curtains – envision if you will two young men, with “nothin’s gonna stop me” attitudes, attempting to swoon the hearts of two absolutely gorgeous young ladies. Then, place them on the pristine beaches of Taboga Island with the sun blaring and fresh hearts pitter-pattering. It was lust at first sight. The girls were already into them and as young men will do, it was high time they initiated the showing off of capabilities ritual as is customary in testosterone-laden young men. “Hey, let’s see who can hang the longest from this tree branch!”, one of us said. “Yeah, sure, that’s the smartestest thing we’ve ever thought of.”, said his intellectual match of a Neanderthal. So, there we were like a couple of jackasses, hanging our stupid knuckle-dragging selves from this tree limb, just for the sake and wish of “scoring” later on. We partook in the mandatory trash talking, where he started to call me something like a “stinky poopoo” and I made lewd comments about a mock affair that I had with his mother. As expected, after a few minutes of this gibberish, it was clear I was going to win. My buddy “S” was struggling and I was easily interlocking my hands and had no intention of falling for hours. Suddenly his “mate-to-be” approached and started to tickle me. “What dastardly thing art thou to distract me heathen? I scorn you, scurvy of the earth, you rankest compound of villainous smell!”… ok, I didn’t say that, what I did say was even funnier in my mind’s eye. It was my intent to yell out in Spanish, “Stop that or I’ll fall!” which is “Ya basta, o me caigo!”, buuuuuut seeing as my Spanish was weaker than American coffee, I instead yelled out with the same fervor, “Ya basta o me cago!” She fell. “S” fell. Even my date, who was sitting on a log, fell. And then I dropped down, dumbfounded.

“What happened?”

“S”, who was much more proficient, could hardly contain himself to studder the words, “You said ‘Stop it, or I’ll shit myself!’” The glory days.

And now, on to some good news finally. Just today, I was talking to my chiropractor Sherry, telling her that the Panamanian government absolutely has no plan to move forward, but I think, I hope, I may have to actually eat those words.

TOP NEWS and TIDBITS

Yoli’s Summary

A study from South Korea sheds light on one of the many mysteries of the new coronavirus: why people infected but without symptoms have the same amount of virus in their noses as those who have them.

Without knowing it, these apparently healthy people are one of the main spreaders of the virus that causes COVID-19.

This “ghost” spread of the virus is part of what makes it so difficult to contain.

The scientists analyzed samples of 193 patients with COVID symptoms and 110 without symptoms, taken during the month of March at a community center dedicated to the pandemic in the Cheonan region.

30% of the symptom-free patients remained apparently “healthy” at all times.

Already since June, Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases of the United States, has been saying in different interviews that this transmission is not unusual, as the World Health Organization (WHO ), but represents one of the main threats of the pandemic.

Fauci said that while it is of course good for the asymptomatic person to “feel good and not suffer the effects of the virus,” those they infect may not be as lucky. Fauciestimates that the number of asymptomatic patients could be higher than that indicated by the South Korean study, and could rise to 40% of cases.

Participants in the South Korean study, which was published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, were in isolation when testing positive for COVID-19, so they did not expose others to the coronavirus.

Doctors and nurses recorded their temperatures and other symptoms, and analyzed their sputum, where the virus in their lungs, as well as their noses and throats, can be measured.

Thus, they verified that the two groups of patients, the asymptomatic and those with symptoms, had a similar viral load, that is, amount of virus, throughout the course of the infection.

All recovered from the disease. Asymptomatic people were virus-free a little earlier: around day 17, compared to day 19 or 20 for those with symptoms.

Although this group was isolated, millions of people continue with their daily lives, going to the market, to the park, even to work without even knowing that they have COVID.

How do they transmit it? Like anyone else: when talking, eventually coughing or touching the nose, mouth, and then touching surfaces, utensils, or other objects.

If they live in areas where the use of masks is not emphasized, the risk of spreading the virus is of course higher. Although new studies have begun to analyze the meaning in terms of science and public health of the group of asymptomatic, China, where the outbreak of the new coronavirus began, warned them early. Since April 1, the Chinese authorities began to publish daily figures on the number of new asymptomatic coronavirus cases.

These figures suggested that about four out of five coronavirus infections do not cause illness. Public health experts explain that precisely because of this group of people who do not know they have COVID, it is extremely important to follow the simple rules that are requested to stop the pandemic. They are: wearing a face mask in closed and public places, maintaining a social distance of six feet (two meters) between people other than the family group that lives under the same roof, and washing hands with soap and water frequently.

They also emphasize the importance of mass testing, and contact tracing, to identify people who have been in contact with a person with COVID.

PANAMA HAD UNKNOWN TRANSMISSION OF COVID-19 FOR ABOUT 2 OR 3 WEEKS: GORGAS

A study by the Gorgas Commemorative Institute for Health Studies (Icges) confirms that the virus reached the country in mid-February.

The investigation found a local transmission for February 23 – Carnival days – but the potential source of the infection dates back to February 15.

Furthermore, it shows that in Panama a strain originated a cryptic (hidden) transmission for at least 2 to 3 weeks before being detected by the epidemiological surveillance system.

Hidden strain of the virus spread in the country

The puzzle of the arrival in Panama of the new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, the transmitter of the Covid-19 disease, begins to take shape after scientists from the Gorgas Memorial Institute for Health Studies (Icges) obtained key pieces, through of genome analysis and mathematical epidemiology.

Preliminary results of studies from the first five weeks of the Covid-19 epidemic in the country confirm that the virus arrived just in mid-February of this year.

The epidemiological investigation found that there was already a local transmission by February 23. The assertion is based on reports of the onset of symptoms of the first local case confirmed on March 9, and the potential source of this infection dates back to February 15.

This is explained in the preprint of the study Dynamics of early transmission, dissemination and genomic characterization of SARS-CoV-2 in Panama.

Another interesting piece of the research is that the scientists sequenced 313 complete genomes from samples of patients with the disease, which allowed them to establish that 10 lineages (strains) that have their origin of import arrived in the country. The strains were detected by epidemiological surveillance of suspected cases and their contacts through active tracking.

Cryptic Bloodline (Hidden)

Alexander Martínez, head of the Genomics and Proteomics department of Icges, explained that, of the 10 strains detected, at least 7 were effectively controlled, and the other 3 showed great growth among the population.

The three strains that spread in the country were the A1 (United States), A2 (Spain) and B1 (Italy) strains. In fact, the A2 strain from Spain arrived, mutated and established itself among the Panamanian population, originating the A2PAN strain.

Martínez explained that the growth of this strain in the country originated because it was not detected during the last two weeks of February and at the beginning of March, which prevented its control. That is, there was a cryptic (hidden) transmission of the virus.

The scientist argued that at the beginning of the epidemic the cryptic (hidden) lineage very possibly circulated in the people who started symptoms around February 15 and the teacher who died, and that those few cases led to a large initial transmission.

In addition, Martínez pointed out that the analysis of viral lineages carried out shows how in Panama the virus arrived from different places, and if it is compared with the rest of the continent, the lineage that was transmitted was not the same that spread in countries such as Brazil, Mexico, among others.

Jean Paul Carrera, virologist and epidemiologist at Icges, stressed that cryptic or hidden transmission is a transmission that goes unnoticed by the surveillance system, and potentially occurs because the virus is in asymptomatic people or with very moderate infection, which does not allow a easy identification of cases and virus circulation.

“We believe that the cause of the panorama that we are experiencing today is due to the hidden transmission that originated at the beginning of the pandemic in the country,” he said.

The Gorgas institute study also indicates that Panama has the highest number of confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infections and deaths in the Central American region.

The reason for this number of cases and deaths, according to the research, is the hidden transmission of the virus, the dynamics of rapid and early transmission, the active search for cases and their contacts, combined with a strong molecular testing capacity in the country.

The study is a work between scientists from the department of Virology and Biotechnology, and Genomics and Proteomics of the Icges, Department of Epidemiology of the Ministry of Health, the University of Oxford, among others.

The preprint of this research was published on August 4 on the scientific site Medrxiv, and is under formal evaluation by peers of experts in international journals.

The evolution of the epidemic in Panama is not the only one that has been under the gaze of Gorgas scientists, but also that of Brazil.

The main similarity between the epidemic in Panama and Brazil is that they fail to suppress the circulation of the virus, although both countries have reduced the magnitude of the Covid-19 pandemic, which emerged in China.

PRESIDENT CORTIZO CONFIRMS THE REOPENING OF NEW ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES. IT WILL BE ANNOUNCED AT A PRESS CONFERENCE TONIGHT.

The President of the Republic, Laurentino Cortizo Cohen confirmed this Tuesday the reopening of new economic activities that will be announced this Tuesday afternoon at a press conference.

The announcement comes after the Ministry of Health reported a drop in the reproduction rate of Covid-19 to 1.13 in the country.

The Figali convention center is ready to receive the first positive patients with Covid-19 starting this Friday, the president said after a tour of the place together with the health authorities. The Figali was conditioned to house four rooms with a total of 160 beds for people with coronavirus.

According to President Cortizo Cohen, the place had leaks that have already been repaired, and the final tests of the electrical system, the emergency power plant, oxygen and air conditioning are still pending.

“It’s ready, we already have two rooms. All the rooms already have their beds, they need a little more cleaning, “he said.

There are three rooms for “moderate” patients and one for the intensive care unit (ICU).

Upon arrival at the Figali convention center, the president announced that this Friday he would be transferring patients for covid-19 to this place.

In another vein, the president officially announced the cooperation agreement with the company BaseCamp for the development of a technological ecosystem based on the model of the Gav-Yam Negev technology and innovation park, in Israel.

“Converting Panama into a digital‘ hub ’aims to attract investments from technology and innovation companies in the world to encourage entrepreneurship, education and enhance Panamanian talent, closing the gap of inequality,” said the president.

The president made the announcement after Cybertech Latin America’s annual conference, held virtually in Panama, which was attended by the Minister of Commerce and Industries (MICI), Ramón Martínez, and the Minister Counselor for Facilitation of Private Investment, José Alejandro Rojas Pardini, representing the National Government.

“Understanding that the future is digital and that the natural advantages of our country make us an ideal place to become the digital hub of the region, we have followed this strategy with great responsibility,” said Minister Martínez, weighing the benefits the establishment of a regional BaseCampheadquarters for Latin America in Panama, which is added to other strategies, such as strengthening the country’s logistics capacity and competitiveness, which, along with many other advantages, make Panama the ideal place to invest In the continent.

Collaboration for the development of a technological ecosystem is the result of efforts undertaken internationally by government authorities. In January of this year, a delegation from the Government of Panama, headed by the head of the MICI, traveled to Israel for important meetings with various officials and companies, to discuss Panama’s strategy as the region’s digital hub, in Cybertech Tel Aviv.

During the visit, the authorities toured the BaseCamptechnology park and learned about the innovative ecosystem model that connects the public and academic sectors with private initiative, in a beneficial and sustainable way, under the public-private partnership business model. (APP).

“At BaseCamp we believe in economic development through innovation. Seven years ago in our technology park in Gav-Yam Negev there were no job opportunities in technology; Today there are more than 3,000 people who work in more than 70 technology companies and ‘startups’. We are proud to collaborate with the Government of Panama in the development of a technological ecosystem that will make Panama a leading country in innovation in Latin America ”, said Uzy Zwebner, CEO and president of BaseCamp.

Promotion of technological cooperation

The BaseCamp company is dedicated to establishing and managing innovation ecosystems around the world, with operations in six countries (Israel, Germany, Kazakhstan, China, Taiwan and Greece). BaseCamp has a vast network of connections with Israeli emerging innovative companies, high-tech companies, ‘startups’, as well as with senior officials from the Israeli technology ecosystem.

For his part, Minister Counselor Rojas Pardini explained that “the Government of President Laurentino Cortizo Cohen is committed to the digital economy to attract investment and development to the country; Israeli innovation is known worldwide for its pioneering approach, therefore, the development of an ecosystem such as that of BaseCamp in Panama represents an important contribution in the transfer of knowledge and in increasing the competitive capacity of Panamanian human talent ”.

MODULAR HOSPITAL WILL BE FULLY INTENSIVE CARE; PATIENTS WILL BE TRANSFERRED TO FIGALI

The hospital currently has 100 beds, 80 for regular hospitalization and 20 for intensive care.

The Minister of Health, Luis Francisco Sucre, announced on Tuesday that the Hospital Modular Panamá Solidario will become fully intensive care for patients with COVID-19.

This hospital center has 100 beds, 80 of which were intended for ward patients and 20 for ICU, however, the Panamanian president Laurentino Cortizo announced that this Friday the Figali Convention Center will be enabled for patients requiring ward care, for which the positives will be transferred to the room of the Hospital Complex and the Modular Hospital to Figali.

Modular Hospital will be used only for patients requiring intensive care. Manuel Batista

These decisions, according to Cortizo, are part of the strategy implemented to reduce the number of patients in both hospitals.

For the modular hospital, which was built in a month, the Public Ministry opened an ex officio investigation and the Office of the Public Prosecutor accepted complaints, for the alleged rejection of the donation of a Chinese company to convert the Amador Convention Center into a temporary hospital with 1,500 beds, and by the use of modular units.

IN THE EPICENTER OF THE PANDEMIC, THE PEOPLE OF WUHAN NO LONGER USE THEIR MASKS

People move on a small street in Wuhan, China.

In the heart of China, his city was the first on the planet to be quarantined. But six months later, the inhabitants of Wuhan are enjoying the return to a normal life, to such an extent that many of them do not hesitate to put down the mask.

Young people dancing at a techno party, crowded food stalls and traffic jams everywhere: the landscape of Wuhan (center) no longer has anything to do with the ghost town atmosphere that the Yangtze shores have experienced since January 23.

The metropolis of 11 million inhabitants lived through a harsh 76-day confinement, finally lifted in early April. But with the disease nearing disappearance across the whole of China, the movement has taken over the streets.

Thousands of Wuhan people line up every morning in front of caravans selling breakfast. A scene that contrasts with the crowds that flocked to city hospitals during winter, distraught over the new coronavirus.

While the mask is mandatory in Berlin and Paris, in Wuhan the symbol of the pandemic, as well as full suits and safety glasses give way to umbrellas and sunglasses. These last days the temperatures reached 34 degrees. Tourists returned and were photographed smiling in front of the Yellow Crane Tower, one of Wuhan’s iconic landmarks, with its red and orange crafts.

Closed market

But the return to normality is not complete and economic activity continues to be affected. “In the first half of the year, we only reactivated certain projects that were planned before the epidemic,” Hu Zeyu, an employee of a real estate agency, told AFP. “The volume of business was strongly reduced.”

The same happened to Yang Liankang, a food stall owner. Activity is slowly picking up, with day-to-day sales rising from around 300 yuan ($ 43) last month to more than 1,000 yuan ($ 143) today. “But they are not going as well as I imagined,” he says. Among the first contaminated people in Wuhan, many worked at the Huanan Fresh Market, which was closed by authorities in early January. Left to abandon behind tall blue bars, it has not reopened.

Some vendors reinstated their positions further afield. After the deconfinement, Wuhan took the time to recall his trauma.

In the Museum of the Revolution, an exhibition on COVID-19 presents objects representative of the fight against the pandemic.

Visitors can see full body suits with dedications that were worn by health personnel during the crisis. Many Wuhan now say they want to enjoy everyday life. “Now, I enjoy each day as if it were my last,” declares a local named Hu Fenglian. “I don’t feel like worrying too much.”

XAVIER SÁEZ-LLORENS, ON THE RUSSIAN VACCINE: ‘SKIPPING STAGES COULD BE DECEPTIVE’

The infectologist Xavier Sáez-Llorens analyzed the vaccine development process, after the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, announced on Tuesday that that country had already registered the first.

Sáez-Llorens warned that vaccines should not obey political ideas and that they have to go through a strict research phase before being applied en masse.

“Vaccine development should not be based on ideological, political, economic or hegemonic rush, but strictly on rigorous evaluation of research phases in terms of safety and efficacy … skipping stages by going too fast could be misleading and dangerous” , said the doctor through his Twitter account.

In this sense, he added that the data on it should be shared in prestigious publications for its study.

“Before massively vaccinating a population, vaccines must be tested for safety and efficacy in clinical trials in various regions of the world and these data on safety, immunity and benefit must be published in prestigious scientific journals to be analyzed,” he considered.

He added that when vaccines are endorsed by entities such as the FDA, EMA, WHO, NIH, CEPI and GAVI, they offer a greater guarantee of potential quality.

In his opinion, the origin of the vaccine is the least important thing, the fundamental thing is to give priority to the common good.

“Whether the vaccine is American, Russian, Chinese, European, Brazilian, Indian, Australian or Canadian is the least of it; the important thing is that it be well studied in terms of safety / efficacy and the data published for expert analysis. The common good is imperative ethical superior to everything else, “he said.

Dr. Eduardo Ortega-Barría also referred to vaccines, of which he said it is important that they offer confidence.

“The emergency that the world is experiencing requires the urgent development of vaccines against COVID-19. However, it is important to complete all the research steps that allow them to be licensed and strengthen society’s confidence in their safety and efficacy,” he said.

WHO RECALLS NEED FOR ‘RIGOROUS PROCEDURES’ AFTER ANNOUNCEMENT OF RUSSIAN VACCINE

WHO logo.

The World Health Organization (WHO) reacted prudently to the announcement made by Russia on Tuesday about the development of a vaccine against covid19 and recalled that the “prequalification” and homologation of a vaccine go through “rigorous procedures.” “We are in close contact with the Russians and discussions continue. The prequalification of all vaccines goes through rigorous procedures,” said Tarik Jasarevic, WHO spokesman, during a press videoconference. “Prequalification comprises the examination and evacuation of all the required safety and efficacy elements collected during clinical trials,” he recalled. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on Tuesday that Russia had developed the “first” vaccine against the new coronavirus and assured that it offers “lasting immunity” and that one of his daughters was inoculated with it. So far, Russia has not published a detailed study of the results of its trials to establish the efficacy of the products it claims to have developed. Last week the WHO was hesitant when Russia had stated that its vaccine was almost ready and recalled that every pharmaceutical product must “undergo all the different tests and trials before being approved for use.” For now, “it is vital to apply public health measures that work. We must continue to invest in the development of vaccines and treatments that help us reduce transmission in the future,” said the WHO spokesman, who said he was “motivated by how quickly some candidate vaccines are developed. ”

“We hope that some of them will be effective,”

Jasarevic continued.

According to the WHO, there are 26 candidate vaccines in clinical trials (tested in humans) worldwide and another 139 are in the state of pre-clinical evaluation. Among the 26, six had reached phase three of their development by the end of July. The one developed by the Russian center Gamaleia was classified in phase 1. Russian Health Minister Mikhail Murashko stated that “clinical trials will continue to be carried out on several thousand people.”

LABOR COMMITTEE PROHIBITS PRELIMINARY INCOME DRAFT OF B / .300.00 PER MONTH FOR PANAMANIAN FAMILIES

The Labor, Health and Social Development Commission of the National Assembly of Panama this afternoon approved the draft of Law No. 52 that seeks to create a temporary solidarity income for workers economically affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The presentation of the draft was made by deputy Luis Ernesto Carles, based on the recommendation of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), which proposed that in 2020 governments should set an income to help workers with their food who were unemployed or whose income has been depleted by the coronavirus pandemic.

“ECLAC, with respect to workers who have lost their jobs, has recommended that governments establish a single registry of solidarity benefits. That is what we are contributing in this draft law, the single registry of beneficiaries, which benefits all workers who have been separated from their employment relationship, that is, they have been fired, dismissed, during the pandemic; all workers who have had the effects of their contracts suspended, all independent … informal workers ” Carles said about the proposal.

The deputy indicated that it was proposed, according to the recommendations made by ECLAC, to establish the solidarity income per household, paying a total of B / .300.00 per month for four months.

Carles said that some 800 thousand Panamanian families could benefit from this income.

326 MSMES TEMPORARILY OR DEFINITELY CLOSED THEIR DOORS

80% of the MSMEs surveyed think that the Government’s plans applied so far will not help to improve the situation of their companies.

The visibility of the effects of the coronavirus on the Panamanian economy and the labor market increases with each new study and report that is made to the sector of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in the country.

One of the latest studies that has been carried out in this line, carried out by the Federation of Chambers of Commerce of the Republic of Panama (Fedecámaras), and which was released this morning, reveals that most of the Entrepreneurs feel that the government’s plans will not help to improve the situation of their companies or to reactivate the economy.

According to a survey carried out by Fedecámaras to 817 entrepreneurs of micro, small and medium-sized companies nationwide, between July 24 and August 5, 96% of the entrepreneurs are not operating normally, that is, they were fired workers; they work with fewer staff; under the teleworking modality and with reduced salary. Which means that only 4% operate normally.

The survey, which seeks to know the situation and perspectives of this sector in the face of Covid-19, points out that at least 326 MSMEs closed their doors temporarily or permanently, due to the effects of the pandemic and confinement.

“The productive sector is concerned about the situation and it is necessary for the National Government to act immediately based on the realities, given the imminence of a possible economic disaster with serious social consequences,” said Fedecámaras.

80% of the MSMEs surveyed think that the Government’s plans applied so far will not help to improve the situation of their companies or reactivate the economy, 70% question the health policies adopted by the authorities and 83% answer that the economy simply will not is going to reactivate.

“Fedecámaras, analyzing the survey and in view of the situation presented, considers that the National Government should reorient the productive sector towards opening up in harmony with the guidelines and protocols requested by the Ministry of Health for each sector and economic activity in the country,” said Fulvia de Vargas , president of the Fedecámaras.

We reiterate to the Executive that it must take the proposal that Fedecámaras has been discussing and informing the citizens, which has many facilities for this sector that generates more than 70% of the jobs in the country to reactivate, said Alicia Jiménez, member of the Fedecámaras.

Among the businessmen’s proposals, the opening of activities is contemplated in order for the consumer to receive their income again and to reactivate the supply and demand wheel.

“We propose to carry out practices that are being carried out in other countries and that are giving good results. We have proposed a program of non-reimbursable funds, but we have not been listened to and we know that it can help to reactivate the economy, “said the businesswoman.

RUSSIA ANNOUNCES THE ‘FIRST’ VACCINE AGAINST CORONAVIRUS

The vaccine will be distributed on January 1, 2021.

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced Tuesday that his country developed the “first” vaccine against the coronavirus, which reappeared in New Zealand after more than three months and has already infected more than 20 million people in the world.

The Russian announcement comes when the world registers more than 736 thousand deaths from the pandemic that originated in China in December, according to an AFP count prepared with official figures.

The United States continues to be the most affected country in the world, with more than 163 thousand deaths and five million infected. Brazil follows, with more than 101 thousand deaths and more than three million infections.

“This morning, for the first time in the world, a vaccine against the new coronavirus has been registered,” Putin said during a videoconference with members of the government broadcast on television. “I know that it is quite effective, that it provides long-lasting immunity,” he added.

In the weeks prior to this announcement, foreign scientists expressed their concern about the speed of the creation of such a vaccine, and the WHO called for the respect of “clear guidelines and directives” regarding the development of this product.

Putin even claimed that one of his daughters was inoculated with the vaccine, named “Sputnik V” (V for Victory) in homage to the Soviet satellite. “He participated in the experiments,” he said, according to the Interfax agency, adding that he had a slight fever “and nothing else.”

Industrial production of the vaccine, of which 20 countries have already ordered one billion doses, will begin in September, according to the president of the sovereign wealth fund involved in its creation, Kirill Dmitriev.

The vaccine will be distributed on January 1, 2021, according to the national drug registry of the Ministry of Health, consulted by Russian press agencies.

Although the pace of the pandemic appears to be stabilizing around the world, with an additional one million cases registered every four days since mid-July, the battle against the coronavirus has intensified in Europe.

Reopening document

Among the activities that will be reactivated are those related to Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), public and private works with significant progress in execution, beauty parlors and barber shops; retail stores and car sales companies.

During the press conference, Sucre explained that beauty parlors and barbershops will be able to operate by appointment and with a 50% capacity in their facilities; in addition, retail stores may deliver goods at the doors of their premises and in the parking lots only to those customers who place their orders online.

He also detailed the construction projects authorized to continue, which are those with significant progress in the execution of the works, including public and 16 private companies both in the capital and in the interior of the country.

The projects include rehabilitation of highways, construction of bridges, roads as well as progress in works such as the Fourth Bridge over the Canal, expansion of the Tocumen Airport and the Amador Convention Center, among others.

This, after a presentation by the Minister of Commerce and Industries (MICI), Ramón Martínez, before the Cabinet Council on the economic and social aspects that support the reopening, with prior consultation with the private sector, Health Advisory Council, health authorities and the Bureau of Economic Reactivation.

The Ministry of Health reported a drop in the Rt or effective reproductive index of COVID-19 cases in Panama to 1.07 in the last epidemiological week.

Economic activities in the country were suspended since last March, and for the gradual reopening of businesses, the National Government divided them into six blocks.

The first block of activities, which included home retail sales, fishing and technical services, began on May 13; while on June 1, the second one opened, which includes the construction of prioritized public infrastructure, non-metallic mining, industry and places of worship, parks, sports areas and social areas.

Likewise, on July 27 in Los Santos, Herrera and Coclé, activities related to the sale of cars, restaurants, private construction and the release of professional and administrative services took place due to the low incidence of cases that have registered those provinces.

At the beginning of August, the Controlled Operations Center was established for the interconnection of International Commercial Aviation, which allows connecting flights or in transit, from or to the Tocumen Airport.

Among the guidelines for the return to normalcy published by the Minsa, companies must comply with protocols such as the organization of a special health and hygiene committee, apply measures among their collaborators and clients such as hand washing, use of alcoholic gel , use of masks, physical distance of at least two meters between people, cleaning and disinfection of areas.

According to the latest Minsa report, Panama to date reports 76,386 positive cases of COVID-19, revealing that 50,665 people have managed to overcome the virus.

The reopening of activities depends on a weekly review of the virus infection rate in the country and an evaluation of the installed capacity of the health system.

The National Government reiterates that “as progress is made in strengthening the health system with the expansion of hospital capacity, health personnel, increased tests to detect positive cases of COVID-19 and the actions of traceability “, the opening of other economic activities will be analyzed.

END NOTES

I know, I know, this is supposed to be a non-COVID safe space… I’m sorry in advance for these, but I couldn’t’ help adding them to the END NOTES.  I don’t remember who sent me the first one, but it’s absolute gold and I just need to ensure everyone I care about gets to see it.  Peter Sellers was genius when it came to portraying the famed Chief Inspector Clouseau.

The second image is a childhood favorite of mine and a favorite of my boys as well.  I’m proud to have introduced them to the Swedish Chef, especially his rendition of “Popcorn” which is a classic.

What better way to send a message, but through such awesomely iconic images from our past.  Well, MY past, depending on how old YOU are…

So, without adieu (did you see what I did there?), I’d like to send this message.  If you really truly do not have to, please…..:

And my favorite from my youth, as previously mentioned, instead of taking a chance, please people, just……

To balance this out, here’s another great meme from another fine actor.  As you know, he has a certain noticeable particularity in his manner of speaking.  Given my faux pas from the begging of the week, unintentionally spewing manure to my reader base, here’s a bit more of the same from the master himself, Sean Connery:

Stay safe… Stay healthy… And by all means (unless you’re happily working to reopen your business next week, please just ) STÜR DE FÜRK AT HÜRM!!…
