Some of our best, funniest moments happen at the dinner table.  I think in our household, like in many, we always look for ways to make each other laugh, but the absolute best material comes out when mom presents us with new recipes.

“I don’t trust that.”, says a very doubtful Brett Jr.

“Trust what?”, his mom asks.

“The slimy, gravy thing with chunks in it.”, as he points to the slimy-gravy-chunky-nasty stuff in a small bowl.

Mom retorts sternly, “I’ll have you know, that I used to eat this as a kid and it was one of my favorite things to eat.”.

“Yeah, but look at it.  It looks like it’s about ready to mutate and turn us into zombies.  I can’t trust it.”, he says with a smile.

“What do you mean you don’t trust it?”, Brandon interjects.  “Did you give it a loan that it hasn’t paid you back for yet?”  By this time, these two have me rolling with laughter.

“Maybe it told him just one too many lies.”, I added with a bit of a chortle.  Then suddenly, while the three of us were laughing uncontrollably, a very serious and possibly hurt momma, told us to knock it off, or there’ll be no dessert.

“It’s a bean soup with elbow macaroni and plantain that we picked from the backyard.  I worked very hard at making this special meal and you’re going to eat it!”

“I’ll eat it once it gives me the $20 it still owes me.”, Brett Jr said.

Needless to say, we didn’t get dessert last night.

Yoli’s Wisdom

New research is showing that hair loss is another consequence of having passed the coronavirus, even months after having overcome the disease, hair falls out, and very abundantly.

But not only those who have suffered the disease are having these derived problems, those who have not had the disease also suffer from hair loss, and it is that anxiety and stress affect us all. In fact, doctors say that many patients recovering from COVID-19 have hair loss, not because of the virus itself, but because of the physiological stress of fighting it.

Hair falls out, even if you haven’t had the coronavirus

Many never-infected people are also losing their hair due to emotional stress from job loss, financial stress, the death of a family member, or other events stemming from the pandemic. There are many factors that we do not know about the current life, the future, we do not even know when we will be able to make plans or a more or less normal life without thinking about not infecting any loved one, not putting ourselves in danger and when children will be able to enjoy a Park. And that uncertainty is horrible.

Hair loss is also associated with the coronavirus.

HAIR LOSS

Experts point out that there are two types of hair loss that the pandemic has triggered. In one of them, the disease called telogen effluvium, people lose much more than the 50 to 100 hairs that tend to fall out per day, and it usually begins several months after a stressful experience.

In the other, called alopecia areata, some cases heal without treatment and others resort to steroid injections, but others can become permanent, especially if not treated in time.

The increase in cortisol levels due to stress and anxiety can be behind this hair loss, both in men and women, which has the scientific community analyzing each patient and investigating each medical consultation in this line.

MOBILE HOSPITAL INAUGURATED TO HOUSE PATIENTS WITH SYMPTOMS RELATED TO COVID-19

In order to house and provide primary and semi-intensive care to patients with symptoms related to COVID-19, the mobile hospital was inaugurated this Monday, October 5, in the vicinity of the Irma De Lourdes Tzanetatos hospital, on December 24.

This medical center has a capacity for 16 beds for semi-intensive care, 5 oxygen concentrators, an air filtration system and has a duration of 20 years, with due maintenance.

The initiative was possible with the solidarity contribution of the bank’s collaborators and a corporate donation from Scotiabank.

The President of the Republic, Laurentino Cortizo, emphasized that this hospital will be used to stabilize patients, who present symptoms and if they become serious they will be transferred for their greater care.

“We are sure that this mobile hospital, in addition to expanding the installed capacity for emergency care in the country, will help health authorities to reach very vulnerable populations and contribute to future health needs in Panama,” said Soledad Rovira, general manager of Scotiabank Panamá.

MINSA WORKS ON A SPECIFICATION TO STRENGTHEN THE COLD CHAIN FOR THE STORAGE OF THE COVID-19 VACCINE

Panama seeks to strengthen the cold chain system for the storage of the COVID-19 vaccine.

The Ministry of Health of Panama (Minsa) is working on the preparation of the technical specifications of the tender documents to reinforce the cold chain system for the storage of the COVID-19 vaccine.

This is a tender to be held in the next few days for the construction of a cold room of about 160 cubic meters to store the doses.

Itzel Hewitt, general coordinator of the Expanded Program of Immunization of the Minsa informed that they have the installed capacity, however, Panama is working for the possible arrival of a “vaccine with freezing above -60 or -80, which will quickly need to install a room additional cold “.

During a tour of the regional biological deposit for vaccines, Hewitt explained that “not everyone has the capacity to respond, we are very sensitive when a tender of this type is going to be carried out, that those who participate are companies with management experience and preservation of vaccines ”.

She added that those companies that have experience in dairy products, blood or legumes will not enter as prequalified.

“We prefer to work with the few (companies), since this way we guarantee the quality of the conservation of the vaccine,” said the general coordinator of the Expanded Program on Immunization.

It should be noted that this is only one of the public acts that will be held, since other tenders are contemplated for the construction of at least four (4) small cold rooms that will be distributed in the Ngäbe-Buglé Comarca, the San Miguelito district and the provinces of Coclé and Herrera.

YOUNG DOCTOR STRICKEN WITH COVID-19 NEEDS $ 1 MILLION FOR LUNG TRANSPLANTATION

Carlos Manuel Mendoza managed with great effort to graduate as a doctor.

Carlos Manuel Mendoza Gobea dreamed of being a doctor and with the efforts of his family, who even deprived themselves of eating, he managed to achieve his goal. However, now the coronavirus keeps him fighting for his life.

Gobea, who graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Panama in 2016, served on the front lines of battle when he was infected with COVID-19.

“Those of us who know him know the quality of a person he is, always having as a priority ensuring the well-being of his patients. Unfortunately, his life has been compromised as a result of COVID-19 as he is in the first line of care, within the system health at the level of medical ambulances, “said José Baruco, through the Change.org platform, where he cries out for help.

The 31-year-old doctor from Cocles is sedated, attending his eighth week in the Intensive Care Unit at the Dr. Arnulfo Arias Madrid Hospital Complex, led by Dr. Guadalupe Castillo, an intensivist, neurointensive physician and surgeon, who together with his team of professionals has succeeded in attaching it to an artificial lung called an extracorporeal oxygenation membrane (ECMO).

This mechanism is used for the first time in Panama and its function is to guarantee the oxygenation of the blood, since in Carlos’s case his lungs have been compromised as a result of the COVID-19 infection.

Despite having this very aggressive lung condition, the native of La Pintada has not presented damage to other organs.

Baruco adds in his report that Gobea has a complete neurological state thanks to this innovative therapy; However, after six weeks of continuous application, the group of doctors who treat him foresee no improvement at the lung level, for which they recommend his transfer to consider a lung transplant.

“We have been making inquiries in other countries, and for now they have informed us that the cost for his treatment is approximately one million dollars. Said treatment can be carried out at Baylor Hospital located in Houston, Texas, United States; where He will be received by Dr. Puneet S. Garcha, Medical Director of the transplant program at said hospital “, added Baruco.

Financial donations to help Carlos can be made by contacting Lisbeth Mendoza (sister), cell 6801-2890 or Eyda Lineth Mendoza (mother), cell 6655-7720.

TELETÓN 20-30 WILL BE ON DECEMBER 11 AND 12, 2020 AND WILL HAVE SIX “STAR AMBASSADORS”

The star ambassadors of the Telethon of this 2020.

The Active 20-30 Club of Panama carried out this October 5 the launch of the 20-30 Telethon, an event that turns 35 this 2020.

This year’s motto is “Don’t leave them out of the team” and it will be broadcast “live and direct” for 28 hours on all local channels. It will feature a presentation of national and international artists.

Giacomo Tamburrelli Palma, president of the Active 20-30 Club of Panama, said that the objective this year is to help with the supply of supplies to children and young people with disabilities affected by the global pandemic of the coronavirus. For this reason, they have the support of the National Secretariat for Disability.

“Our history shows the commitment that we have had for 65 years by and for Panama and in such a conjunctural year as this 2020 we continue to show that our only objective is to work for our childhood. Since day zero of this global emergency, we have not stopped working and we will not do so now. Children are our priority and our work is their happiness ”, expressed Tamburrelli Palma.

For his part, Roberto Sayavedra, president of the Telethon 20-30 committee, said that in the tours they have made nationwide in recent months “we have seen first-hand that there is a community that has been most affected (by the pandemic), since they have a child with a disability in their care. This entails additional inputs such as fortified milk, medical supplies, cleaning supplies, among others ”.

During the launch, the First Lady of the Republic, Yazmín Colón de Cortizo and the general director of the National Disability Secretariat, Donahy Raquel Shaud, were also present.

This year the 20-30 Telethon will have six star ambassadors: Judith González, who was a symbol of the first Telethon held in 1981; Mario Quintero, second symbol child (1982) and patient recovered from Covid-19; Elian Zúñiga, symbol child of 2009; Eduardo Macre, better known as “Eduardito”, symbol child of 2014; Mayuri Moreno, star ambassador of 2018; and Franchesco Velasco: symbol child of 2019.

PROJECT THAT EXTENDS THE USE OF VEHICLE PLATES FOR FIVE YEARS GOES TO A THIRD DEBATE

Brett’s Comments:

Can you say AMEN!?!?!?  Holy crap, I’ve been here 30 years, with any number of cars and hours upon hours in line to get my damn license plates.  Best.  Idea.  Ever.  (But they should have done this 30 years ago!)

The annual payments made to the municipalities will be maintained.

The Plenary of the National Assembly of Panama approved in a second debate the Law No. 434  that establishes the use of the license plate for five years.

The Plenary of the National Assembly of Panama approved in a second debate the project that establishes the use of the license plate can for five years.

The initiative indicates that the annual payments made to the municipalities will be maintained.

Each can will carry a sticker of the year and month that corresponds to it, so that it can be verified that there is peace and security in the payments.

On the other hand, the payments for the manufacture of the license plate cans and the annual stickers granted to the Chapala Vocational Center will continue to be paid annually by the municipalities and State entities, to contribute to the maintenance of the educational and social programs of this resocialization center.

According to the proponents, Zulay Rodríguez and Manolo Ruiz, the project seeks to help mitigate the ecological damage caused by 24-gauge aluminum, a material used in the manufacturing process of car license plates in Panama.

“The manufacturing process of these aluminum sheets, each year generate high levels of waste and garbage that pollute, despite the fact that their workshops use procedures that guarantee high security, and avoid counterfeiting,” said the deputies in their presentation of reasons.

WHAT DID PRESIDENT CORTIZO SAY ABOUT INCREASING TAXES TO PAY DEBTS?

The President of the Republic, Laurentino Cortizo, ruled out the possibility of Panama increasing taxes, even if it is temporary, to finance the payment of the public debt.

The president also referred to the management of resources from both payroll and all public institutions, including 172.

“They are sacred and must be handled in the best way.” Cortizo also addressed other issues and said that in the Amador Convention Center no room has been adapted to care for people infected by COVID-19 and that this would be the last option to be used, since there are commitments for next 2021, to use these facilities for an important tourism activity.

“What we want is to keep this convention center away from COVID-19,” he said. Regarding the restructuring of the Ministry of the Presidency, the president stressed that it is of the utmost importance and a commitment, to leave a number of secretariats, deciding that each of these go to where they should be.

PANAMA WILL TEST THE NEW NORMALITY EVEN WITH A HIGH PANDEMIC RISK

According to data from the Ministry of Health to which EFE had access on Tuesday and which until now have not been made public, there is 40% availability of beds in all hospitals in the country and 38% in intensive care units (ICU) and semiUCI.

Panama, the country in America with the most cases of COVID-19 per million inhabitants, is getting ready to apply the “new normal” next Monday, after more than seven months of pandemic and with an availability of beds and ICUs below the 50% between the total of its public and private hospitals.

On October 12, restrictions on mobility will be fully lifted and international aviation and tourism will be able to fully resume their activities, ending a gradual reactivation schedule that began at the end of September and that until now has allowed the opening non-essential trade, natural parks and federated sports.

In Panama, which accumulates more than 115,000 confirmed infections and 2,400 deaths from COVID-19, there are 5,186 beds in the general ward and another 550 in intensive and semi-intensive care units in both public and private hospitals.

There are currently 2,095 beds in the general ward and 207 in intensive and semi-intensive units to care for patients with COVID-19, according to official data that include public and private hospitals.

“At this time, Panama has a significant amount of availability in terms of the capacity of the health system with respect to beds and ventilators,” Miguel Mayo, former Minister of Health, told EFE.

The Ministry of Health has said that the reopening will be maintained if the Rt or effective reproduction index remains below 1%, the lethality of COVID-19 less than 3%, the availability of beds in the living room by 20% and of the ICU and the Special Respiratory Care Unit (UCRE), 15% or more.

THE PUBLIC SECTOR ABSORBS MORE PATIENTS

In the general ward, there are 3,091 beds occupied, 516 by patients with COVID-19 and 2,575 by other diseases, while in intensive and semi-intensive they are 343, of which 137 are infected by the new coronavirus.

The numbers show that the public system burdens the majority of patients: the Ministry of Health gathers 220 beds occupied with COVID patients and 1,389 for other diseases in the general ward, in ICU and Semi-ICU it has 63 for COVID and 78 for other causes.

The state Social Security Fund (CSS) has 276 beds occupied with COVID-19 patients and 1,034 for other reasons in the ward, while in intensive 65 they are infected with the new coronavirus and 92 for other diseases.

The private sector only maintains 20 beds in the ward and 9 in the ICU occupied by patients infected with the new coronavirus, while 152 and 36 are sick with other conditions, respectively.

Regarding fans, 66% are available: 536 are free and 272 are employed, of the 808 gifted for the country. Of the total employed, 10 are in the ward with COVID-19 patients, 103 with those infected with the new coronavirus in the ICU and Semi-ICU, and 159 with patients from other causes.

FATIGUE SANITARY PERSONNEL AND REAL EXPECTATIONS OF THE POPULATION

For former Minister Mayo, the most worrying thing is not the availability of beds but “the fatigue of health officials who have 7 months of continuous work, with all the work and emotional overload that this means.”

“The prioritization of personal protective equipment and supplies must be guaranteed, as it has been until now, for the suspected increase in cases, which we think may occur with the opening,” Mayo highlighted.

In June, the country experienced an uncontrolled increase in COVID-19 cases, which placed the country as one of the most affected in the continent due to its high transmission rate, and which forced the authorities to freeze a first economic opening plan and reimplant severe mobility measures.

But the improvement in pandemic rates since August led the authorities to restart the opening plan, always insisting that biosafety standards be respected.

The authorities have admitted that they foresee a regrowth due to the reopening that began in September, but that they are working, through traceability, so that it does not have a great impact, and they have not ruled out reimplanting quarantines if necessary.

“It is important that people have a real expectation of the pandemic: the virus has arrived and will be with us for many years, which implies that we must change our behavior and be responsible with our health. We must understand that economic openness is necessary, but there is still a risk of contagion and, therefore, a real possibility of quarantine again, “continued the former minister.

WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION SEEKS TO REFORM IN THE FACE OF A PANDEMIC THAT WOULD HAVE INFECTED 10% OF THE WORLD’S POPULATION

Currently several countries in Europe have outbreaks of cases.

The new coronavirus, which would have already infected 10% of the world’s population, is a “wake-up call” for the international community, the WHO director estimated on Monday, claiming to accelerate the reform of the organization in the face of health emergencies.

During an extraordinary session of the Executive Council of the World Health Organization (WHO) on the response to Covid-19, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus defended the work of the organization, accused in particular by US President Donald Trump of incompetence in its management of the pandemic, which has already caused more than a million deaths.

Together with him, the WHO director of health emergencies, Michael Ryan, explained that around 10% of the world population could have been infected, that is, about 780 million people, much more than double the official figures (35.3 million).

Tedros defended the reform, implemented in the last three years, of an organization that had been accused of having underestimated the scope of the Ebola crisis in West Africa between the end of 2013 and 2016.

“We are not going the wrong way, […] but we must go faster. The pandemic is a wake-up call for everyone, ”said Ghebreyesus, who was wearing a mask.

“We have to look in the mirror and ask ourselves what we can improve,” he added.

This extraordinary two-day meeting of the Executive Council – which brings together representatives of 34 countries elected for three years and charged with preparing and implementing the decisions of the members – is only the fifth in the history of the organization.

It was convened by the WHO in response to a resolution passed by member states in May, which provided for an “independent assessment” of the response to the pandemic by the organization and the international community.

“The world needs a solid peer review system,” said the WHO director, citing as an example the so-called Universal Periodic Review by the Human Rights Council, which all UN members must undergo regularly.

“We encourage countries to contribute new ideas,” continued the Ethiopian.

UNITED STATES WITHDRAWAL

The WHO decreed the global alert on January 30 for Covid-19. Since then, it has been widely criticized, especially by the United States, for its delay in declaring a state of emergency, despite the fact that the coronavirus had already been detected in late December in China.

It also received criticism after issuing recommendations that were considered late or contradictory, especially on the use of a mask or the ways in which the virus is transmitted. Others also pointed out that the institution did not have budgetary resources and independence from the States.

On Monday, the Austrian representative, Clemens Martin Auer, praised the WHO’s performance, but called for a review of its governance.

“We would have liked to meet earlier,” he declared. “Is the Council an active body or is it a facade to express the gratitude [of the countries] for the work that is being done?”

In recent weeks, several countries have launched reflections on a reform of the WHO, such as the United States and the Franco-German axis.

“We look forward to using this special session to begin turning these many good ideas into action,” US Representative Brett Giroir, Assistant Secretary for Health, commented by videoconference.

These projects will be discussed by the 164 members of the WHO in November, when they will also address the consequences of the withdrawal of the United States from the organization, the agency’s first funder.

Meanwhile, the WHO has already launched a campaign to raise funds for mental health, “the great forgotten” of the pandemic, which devastated specialized services.

Of 130 countries surveyed, 92 reported serious disruptions in these mental health services, according to a balance released by the organization on Monday.

“It is the forgotten aspect of Covid-19,” said Devora Kestel, WHO director in charge of mental health, insisted.

DGI URGES YOU TO REQUEST AN INVOICE IN THE MIDST OF THE OPENING OF RESTAURANTS TO THE PUBLIC

Invoices help prevent tax evasion.

The Director of the General Directorate of Revenue, Publio De Gracia, reminded citizens that they must request an invoice from restaurants, regardless of whether the consumption is through home services or directly on the premises.

De Gracia’s statement comes after receiving complaints about this situation, which occurs at a time when these shops reopen to the public, after the closure due to the coronavirus.

“Several people have written to me because some restaurants (both in table and in delivery) are not delivering invoices. We are all happy for the openings; but it is important for our economy to fight against evasion. Consume and support restaurants, but demand your bill, “warned De Gracia.

The senior official added that there are other types of businesses that even promise not to collect taxes.

“Not only restaurants, in recent months we have received complaints (even screenshots) from businesses that promise not to charge the itbms. Remember that fraud is also a misdemeanor; a crime. But more, you do not sponsor evasion”, he specified.

De Gracia stressed that citizens “must become agents in the fight against evasion and that today, more than ever, income is key to meeting the nearly 1.5 million Panamanians who need relief.”

Regarding the complaints, De Gracia explained that they can be made through the institution’s social networks.

“The complaint (in Dirección General de Ingresos or in @DGIpma networks) it is anonymous and a visit is prepared by the billing team, if it is found that it does not comply with its obligation, the corresponding process begins “, the director advised.

Regarding electronic invoicing, she announced that it will be launched at the beginning of next year.

“January, God willing, begins the voluntary massification. We are also formalizing the obligation that the tax machines transmit online,” he said.

END NOTES

Let me tell you what you shouldn’t do when choosing your dental care specialist:

First of all, for those of you who know Dr Charley Garcia, you’ll know that he clearly abandoned us as our dentist when we needed him the most.  That’s right, no more yearly cleanings, unexpected fillings and no more throwing you under the bus while he tells other patients that you love Trump just to see the look on their faces.  (That’s an inside joke.)

So, Dr Charley decided to abandon us, AKA “retire”, or whatever the hell that means.  In his stead, he put some other guy to fill in.  Yesterday, I took the plunge to see if it’s worth using this “new guy”.  You see, last week Wednesday, my mouth had a battle with breakfast and I lost a part of a filling.  Due to my own scheduling issues, I couldn’t get in until yesterday.

Well, this is the part where I tell you what you shouldn’t do.  You should never, under any circumstances, ignore the good advice that Dr Garcia gives you.  The treatment from my new doctor, Dr. Pasquale Calvosa was excellent.  He was very professional, and he gave me three options as well as his opinion.  After a few minutes, my filling was fixed, and I was on my way with no pain and no issues.

So about now you’re asking me, “What about COVID?!”  Well, keep in mind that this is a dentist’s office.  It’s always hygienic anyways!  The measures that they add to steer clear of COVID isn’t much more of an effort, but they do follow MINSA protocols and the entire time that I was there, I felt safe.  They really had their act together and I totally recommend you use their services.

GARCIA DENTAL CLINIC (CLINICA DENTAL GARCIA):  Check them out for appointments at their whatsapp number 6432-5715, with a schedule of 08:00AM to 12:00NOON and 2:00PM to 6:00PM, Monday through Friday.

Me and Dr Pascuale Calvosa – I think we share the same smile!
Clinica Garcia in Panama City, their staff follows strict protocols, following the recommendations of MINSA to the letter!

Stay safe…  Stay healthy…  And by all means (unless you’re at your dentist appointment) JUST STAY HOME!!…
