Where Were You?; It is The First Year Since the First Case in Panama; Vaccination Schedule; Important Information About Road Closures; Jabberwocky

Friday, March 12, 2021

Where were you one year ago this week?  In just a blink of an eye and the placement of a KN95 filtering facepiece respirator mask, Panama was thrust into the fold of a world-wide pandemic.  Now, we’ve passed the one-year mark, yet the pandemic still lingers on.  Sure, we’ve come a long way from the first day MINSA announced the detection of their first infection and death of a teacher from the school in Las Cumbres.  Back then, literally no one knew what the heck was going on and everything was practically guess-work.  Fear was the order of the day and when Panama decided to shut down, there wasn’t a soul on the road.  Not a single car, except for the news reporter vans taking footage of how desolate the city actually was.

Time went on, and the governments of the world showed us the fine art of “winging it”, regardless of which country it was.  Most certainly every single country did what they “felt” was right, most completely ignoring actual science.  Sweden was first praised for not locking down, until their death rate started to skyrocket.  Countries like Nicaragua and North Korea decided to pretend that they didn’t have any problems whatsoever and started off reporting that they had no infections… …but then ordered millions of doses of vaccines once they became available.

Oh, and China lied to us multiple times and continue to lie to us to this very day.

But where were you when the news came out about Panama’s first infection?  It was Monday, March 9, 2020.  By today, everyone knew what was going on in Italy and the first few cases had arrived to the USA via New York and Washington states.  We were more than aware of the teachers who fell ill at the Beckman school in Las Cumbres.  Our family was concerned as we live just a mile from that school and at the time some scientists were hinting that the virus could be air-born.  That day we had already scheduled a meeting to create the Coronavirus Committee for my main client as well as two seminars on how to better protect yourselves against infection.  I remember Not more than an hour into the creation of the committee, at 2PM, we learned from MINSA of our first officially reported case of COVID-19.

That evening, I was initiated into fraternal organization and it was the last time we’ve met in-person at that same location due to the lockdown.  And by the end of this month, I started writing this newsletter.

This last year has been a long unintelligible road to travel.  The changing times, reminds me greatly of the poem by Lewis Carroll, Jabberwocky.  We can all attest to just how brillig it has been and how the slithy toves continue to gyre and gimble in the wabe.

If there’s anything I’ve learned from this, it’s that “there is no tomorrow”.  My step father used to say that often and I never knew what that meant.  “Of course, there’s a tomorrow.  It happens right after today!”, I’d tell him, completely blinded by my own adolescence. But, of course, he never meant that. In his own words, he meant, “Don’t leave for tomorrow, that which you can do today.” That’s not just work or weekly responsibilities. Those are hopes and dreams that he’s talking about. Don’t let any more time pass you by without enjoying what little time we truly have.

TOP NEWS and TIDBITS:

Yoli’s Wisdom

The coronavirus vaccine, developed by AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford, has been the subject of misinterpretations that have contributed to its loss of prestige compared to some of its competitors in the market, such as Pfizer / BioNTech and Moderna. How much myth is there in the bad reputation of AstraZeneca?

Sensitivity at the injection site, headache and joint pain, tiredness, fever, chills, nausea … something like a flu-like state. These are the most common reactions to the AstraZeneca / Oxford vaccine, which have created a bad press for it. And yet these side effects, in addition to being mild or moderate, disappear quickly. Only in very low percentages more serious effects such as pericarditis, hypertension, allergies or asthma have been verified.

The British AstraZeneca / Oxford, received authorization from the European Medicines Agency after clinical trials in the United Kingdom, Brazil and South Africa showed that it has an efficacy against COVID-19 in people over 18 years of age of 70%. Its opponents Pfizer / BioNTech and Moderna claim 95%.

Misrepresentations of its composition have also contributed to the discrediting of AstraZeneca / Oxford. The first thing that must be specified is that it is a viral vector vaccine, different from the classic ones that contain the whole virus, attenuated or killed, to elicit immunity in the injected person.

AstraZeneca / Oxford, on the other hand, introduces into a virus that is harmless to humans and different from the coronavirus, the genetic information necessary for the human body to produce antibodies against the S protein of SARS-CoV-2.

As for the price, AstraZeneca / Oxford takes all the advantage: 5 euros the vaccine against 20 euros that of Pfizer / BioNTech and 30 euros that of Moderna.

France just injected a quarter of its AstraZeneca stock

France only used 25% of the doses of the AstraZeneca covid-19 vaccine it received, the health minister said Tuesday, acknowledging the “problem” of its low use in hospitals.

The head of the French health portfolio stated that, of the 600,000 first doses of this vaccine, intended for health workers under 65 years of age and high-risk people between 50 and 64 years of age, “we have about 75 % of reserves not injected “.

The other vaccines administered in France, Moderna and Pfizer / BioNTech, were used “almost 70%” on average, the public official explained during his weekly appearance on the pandemic issue.

The possibility that the general practitioners of the cities can administer the AstraZeneca vaccines starting this Thursday and its extension to patients with previous pathologies between 65 and 75 years old should be “extended”, said the minister.

Analysis conducted in the UK showed that the AstraZeneca vaccine was effective in reducing hospitalization for older people.

Until now, French health workers have been reluctant to use this vaccine because of its marked side effects (strong flu symptoms), mostly in young people.

PANAMANIANS ENJOY A WEEKEND WITHOUT RESTRICTIONS

Beaches, parks and recreational sites will regain life from today, Saturday, March 6, after the lifting of the weekend quarantine imposed by the Ministry of Health, in order to appease the spread of Covid-19, whose numbers have dropped significantly in recent weeks.

Although the curfew will remain from 10:00 p.m. at 4:00 am, nationwide, since yesterday, long lines of cars were heading towards the beach sector of Panama Oeste, Coclé and other inland provinces, for which the health authority has requested that the measures be maintained of biosecurity against COVID-19, (masks, face shields, hand washing and alcohol).

Lizetta Olivo, head of Public Health in the Metropolitan Region, also suggested using sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, dark glasses, sunscreen for lips, loose-fitting light-colored clothing, in addition to staying hydrated, due to the radiation levels these days .

Likewise, the expert recommended that sun exposure should be between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., for which the filter must be applied every 30 minutes; keep watch over children, especially when they enter the river, beach or spa, in order to avoid accidents.

Taking advantage of the fruits of the season, such as watermelon, oranges, melons among others is another recommendation. Meanwhile, the prohibition of parties and activities that involve crowds in public places, commercial and of any kind, are maintained, according to decree.

ATTENTIVE. EXPIRED CERTIFICATES IS NOT AN IMPEDIMENT TO VACCINATE AGAINST COVID-19

The PAI report of the Minsa reported that since last January 20, to date 150,411 doses have been applied.

The Ministry of Health (Minsa) and the Electoral Tribunal (TE) reiterated this Thursday to people who have expired personal identity cards that they can be vaccinated against covid-19 without any setback.

Through a statement, the TE reported that all IDs (for adults, youth IDs and permanent resident cards for foreigners living in the country) are fully valid until January of next year (2022).

This Thursday, March 4, with more than 700 nurses, stage 2A of phase 2 of the vaccination plan against covid-19 began in Panama, which began in the district of San Miguelito.

The President of the Republic, Laurentino Cortizo, indicated that with this day the country takes an important step in complying with the plan to vaccinate the entire population against covid-19 and added that this process is the most effective way to block the way. to this pandemic.

Cortizo pointed out that the execution of the national vaccination plan is conditional on the delivery of doses by the pharmaceutical companies and therefore, priority will be given to those communities where the highest levels of contagion are registered.

Meanwhile, the report of the Expanded Program on Immunization (PAI) of the Minsa reported that since last January 20, to date 150,411 doses of the vaccine against covid-19 have been applied throughout the country.

¿DO YOU KNOW THE ORDER OF YOUR AREA IN THE COVID-19 VACCINATION SCHEDULE?

Phase 2 of the vaccination began in San Miguelito.

The Minister of Health (Minsa), Luis Francisco Sucre, recalled this Thursday that vaccination in different parts of the country will depend on the number of vaccines they receive weekly.

Starting today, the inoculation of adults over 60 years of age who reside in the district of San Miguelito began.

The pilot plan was launched at this point due to the large number of reported coronavirus cases. Sucre reiterated that indicators were used to know where and with whom to start.

“Remember that it is a continuous vaccination strategy. We start in San Miguelito and later we go to the 8-8 circuit, which is what is established, also the province of West Panama. The more batches of vaccine we receive, the faster we advance. Then we go to the interior, “said the minister.

According to the vaccine prioritization schedule, the next circuit to receive the doses will be 8-8, which includes the townships of Don Bosco, Juan Díaz, Parque Lefevre, Río Abajo and San Francisco.

Then it will go to 8-10 (Tocumen, Pacora, Pedregal, Las Mañanitas, Las Garzas, San Martín and December 24), then to 8-7 (Ancón, Bella Vista, Bethania, Calidonia, Curundú, El Chorrillo, Pueblo Nuevo, San Felipe, Santa Ana). Subsequently, the immunizers will arrive at 8-9 (Chilibre, Las Cumbres, Alcalde Díaz, Ernesto Córdoba C. and Caimitillo) and at 8-4 (Balboa, Chepo, Chimán and Taboga).

After vaccination in Panama, the next province is Panama Oeste, followed by Chiriquí, Colón, Veraguas and Coclé.

The next ones on this list are Bocas del Toro, Herrera, Darién, Guna Yala, Los Santos and the Ngäbe Buglé region.

The inoculation dates will depend on the days the vaccines arrive and the quantity that arrive in the country. Sucre pointed out that the vaccination program and the nurses have the necessary experience to immediately schedule the dates, once they are received.

CLOSE TO 53% OF THE COMPANIES EXPECT THAT IN 6 TO 12 MONTHS THEY WILL RECOVER THE HIRING RATE PRIOR TO A PANDEMIC

Between 6 and 12 months, companies foresee that they will recover the hiring rhythm prior to the pandemic.

Approximately 53% of companies in Panama estimate that between 6 and 12 months they could be recovering the rate of hiring that they presented before the new coronavirus pandemic, as revealed by a survey conducted by Manpower Group.

Ariel Ayala of Manpower Group indicated that 20% of those surveyed responded that they did not know how long it would take to regain the hiring rate, and 30% foresee that this recovery could take place in two years or more.

“Respondents tell us, in almost 53% of the cases, that in a range of 6 to 12 months they will be recovering the rhythm before the pandemic … what we read about this is that there is a certain optimism for part of the business sector to be able to achieve a recovery in the labor market during the next 6 to 12 months, means that in the next 3 months we will continue to see contractions, but it is very likely that in 6 months we will no longer see contractions, and in 12 months at least half of the business park is hiring more or less at the rates we had prior to the pandemic, “Ayala explained on RPC Radio.

Regarding the work modality, 2% of the companies foresee that teleworking will remain permanently, almost 70% estimate that they will be using mixed systems, that is, some days from home and other days in person at the office, or 100% office schemes.

On the other hand, Ayala pointed out that the survey showed that currently the net employment trend is -8%, which means that of every 100 jobs that are held as of March 30, by June 30 there will be 92, that is, there will be a contraction of -8%

“One reading that we have to do immediately is that it is a very sensitive moment in the labor market, where all of us who are working in some way have to take great care of our work because layoffs are actually expected for the next three months. Now, not everything is bad, there are very encouraging things, for example, two quarters ago the net employment trend was -18%, that is to say that six months ago the rate of disengagement was much stronger than the rate that we are seeing today, that gives us the impression that perhaps the worst of the pandemic, in economic-labor terms, may have already passed, “he explained.

“VACCINATION OF TEACHERS COULD START IN APRIL,” SAYS MINISTER MARUJA GORDAY

The head of Education says that immunization is essential for returning to face-to-face classes.

The Minister of Education, Maruja Gorday, indicated that President Laurentino Cortizo has already requested the list of teachers to include them in the vaccination process that has advanced the immunization phase of teachers as a requirement to start face-to-face classes. If the process is completed, the blended classes are expected to begin in the second quarter of the year.

With how many students does the 2021 school year start?

Enrollment for this school year, unlike 2020, is projected, because it is a very changing process, at 790 thousand students. At this time I can tell you that we have had a decrease in the private sector and an increase of 8.9% in the official sector in relation to 2020.

In 2020 you had 729,258 students enrolled, this year, there are 790 thousand, how many students are we talking about who migrated to the official sector?

There is an increase that is not the most significant, which is approximately 5,000 students who migrated from the private sector to the official sector. However, we have the early childhood population that begins to generate inclusion processes at their corresponding levels, and the first-grade students. The projection of 790,672 represents an increase of 8.9% and is related to the increase in births that occurred in the last 5 or 6 years.

They will start again with virtual classes …

Correct. We are going to start in accordance with Decree 25 of January 14, in its articles 2 and 6, which specifically speak that education will be distance, not face-to-face with multiple contextualized strategies that implies tutoring, accompaniment through different television media, of radio and printed guides, dispatch of material, teleclasses, radio classes, development of projects and virtual platforms that are available to both sectors. When we talk about non-face-to-face, it is not class per se, and I take advantage of the space to say what a tutorial is. A tutorial is the call of a student to receive an instruction, to receive material, support and not necessarily in a class per se. The capacity in schools will have what is established in the decree that regulates the availability and disposition in public spaces of up to 25 people, not necessarily 25 students. We have already had conversations with the private sector and the Region, which is the availability of receiving instruction, collecting the material and giving follow-up, especially to children in special education and the first grades, which are the ones that have been most affected by not have that teacher in that process and especially in the Comarcas where even the academic level of the parents is not the support to generate these processes since we have a lifelong debt that increased with the Covid-19.

Are you thinking of starting with blended classes later?

The decree establishes that this modality applies only to the first trimester and according to the behavior of the pandemic and what the health authorities indicate, other modalities may be increased. I have to tell you that the president is pending to advance the vaccination for teachers and possibly it will start in April after a few weeks ago he asked us for the list of teachers and there are around 65 thousand teachers from the official and private sector, in addition to teachers from special education, non-regular system teachers, art and culture teachers, and the idea is to advance the vaccine. What is important is that to the extent that the contagion rate drops, and we can control this, the possibilities of having our schools in a semi-face-to-face routine, and move to a face-to-face routine, gets closer. I reiterate that there are 1,400 schools with less than 100 students and 800 with less than 25 students. That would be the route, which is already given in the biosafety protocol that is approved by resolution and posted on the portal for the entire sector.

How many students are enrolled in two-track accelerated learning?

I can’t tell you the amount because we are closing the program. It is important to tell parents, students who did not complete, students who failed or who have been out of the system for one or two years that they are going to have a comprehensive approach plan. However, we are calculating around 15,000 or 20 students, understanding that 10,000 of them did not join or did not continue, and we could have about 15,000 or 6,000 more who did not enroll before the Covid. This program begins in mid-April and will end in mid-January because we are still collecting the data and it would be irresponsible to start without training teachers in this way. We are talking about 300 instructors who are going to be appointed only for the accelerated learning program.

In early childhood, what is the strategy to expand coverage?

One of the strategies is to appoint around 800 community promoters to work in the settings. I have to be honest the big problem is the lack of physical structure for early childhood. We are appointing the promoters who are the ones who do the work with the local centers and support the initiatives such as nursery, in the construction of four classrooms in what corresponds to pre-kindergarten and kindergarten. And the Ministry of Social Development is within the rector of early childhood policy, generating processes to have more spaces for participation, which is not necessarily a school per se, but rather to generate spaces for participation with the family.

One of the strategies is to appoint around 800 community promoters to work in the settings. I have to be honest, the big problem is the lack of physical structure for early childhood. ‘

THE CINEMAS REOPEN WITH THE OBJECTIVE OF RECOVERING THEIR MARKET

Cinemas begin to reopen for the second time as of today betting on new releases and the continuation of the movie Wonder Woman.

The sector reported that more than 50 films have stopped being released, in a country that in 2019 sold more than 7 million tickets, about $ 36 million approximately.

The economic losses are calculated at more than 80% ($ 28 million 800 thousand) taking the 2019 sales as a reference.

Tony Barclay, official spokesman for the cinema industry in Panama said that today only the Cinepolis cinema chain will reopen with six branches (Multiplaza, Metro Mall, Westland, El Dorado, Altaplaza and Town Center) and 49 screens.

Barclay indicated that they are complying with all the biosafety regulations that have been created in movie theaters.

Among the measures that they adopted so that movie lovers feel safe are: reduction of the capacity to the theaters, that is to say that 100% of the capacity will not be sold, after each show the rooms will be cleaned in depth between shows , the sale of the tickets will be done electronically and in the cinemas, the staff will use a mask and masks, acrylics will be placed, there will be a distance of two meters between the attendees, the temperature will be taken, and there will be a supply of alcoholic gel.

Regarding the cost of the tickets, Barclay indicated that they are aware of the economic situation of Panamanians, and that the price is maintained before the pandemic remains the same as on Wednesday with a special price. ‘

The spokesperson for the movie theater in Panama added that they have not yet confirmed the opening of the rest of the movie theaters.

Since March 16, 2020, some 800 people have been closed and have suspended contracts and now with this reopening, Barclay indicated that the number of workers who will be reinstated is still unknown.

However, he explained that as the activity increases, the rest of the staff will be reintegrated.

For this weekend, Wonder Woman 1984 will be released again, and other films that were in theaters in December when they closed for the second time.

Starting Thursday, January 11, Unestif, Monster Hunter will be released, Tom and Jerry will premiere on March 18, and Godzilla vs King Kong will be in theaters on April 1.

“The film industry is making its bet with these premieres, giving Panamanian families the opportunity to have an entertainment option,” said Barclay.

For consumers and economists, the reopening of other economic activities in the country after several months is positive.

Pedro Acosta, a member of the National Union of Consumers and Users of the Republic of Panama (Uncurepa), said that the opening of cinemas and other businesses is important for the economy to begin to reactivate.

“Although we are in difficult times, people need a little relaxation in the midst of all the health issue that has welcomed us for a year and we do not know when it will stop,” he said.

For his part, the economist Augusto García said that reactivating more activities is very important for more workers to return to their jobs and start generating income.

Panama is the country in Central America where more people go to the movies. An average of 1.8 per million inhabitants. It is only surpassed by Costa Rica.

ONE YEAR OF THE FIRST CASE OF THE NEW CORONAVIRUS IN PANAMA

A year ago, Panama confirmed the first case of covid-19. It was a 40-year-old Panamanian woman who entered the country on Iberia flight 6339 from Barajas, Spain.

For the first time, the health system of our country was facing, without experiencing it, what was going to become a pandemic.

Since then, Panama has experienced a pandemic year, marked by a high number of deaths, curfews, extensive confinement and the start of the long-awaited vaccination day.

EFFECT OF THE VACCINATION CAMPAIGN WILL BE SEEN IN AUGUST, EXPLAINS SUCRE

“We are not going to see a real effect of the vaccines until after August when 70% of the population is vaccinated, by then the use of the mask will be evaluated, it is still very premature,” said Minister Luis Francisco Sucre.

These projections were revealed during a tour of the vaccination centers located at the José Dolores Moscote School in Parque Lefevre and the Elena Chávez de Pinate School in Juan Díaz.

“According to current epidemiological behavior, the next circuits to advance with vaccination are 8-10 and 8-7”, highlighted the Minister of Health.

He added that “Panama does not support another case rebound, another closure or another quarantine, which is why we request not to forget the biosecurity measures.”

“We consider that the Health system has been strengthened in the pandemic, however, the epidemiology department evaluated that according to the behavior the vaccination process begins with Panama, followed by Panama Oeste and then Chiriquí,” said the minister counselor for Health affairs Eyra Ruíz.

THE CORONAVIRUS PUT SCIENCE TO THE TEST

Juan Miguel Pascale, director of the Gorgas Memorial Institute for Health Studies.

According to the director Juan Miguel Pascale, in the 91 years of existence of the Gorgas Memorial Institute for Health Studies, it had been limited to its daily investigations, now it performs 4,500 tests in one day.

Contrary to what happened during the pandemic with the AH1N1 virus where 100 tests were run a day, with the coronavirus, in a year, the Gorgas Memorial Institute for Health Studies (ICGES) has been responsible for categorizing at least 400 one thousand PCR tests, in one year since the start of the pandemic on March 9.

This was announced by the director of ICGES, Juan Miguel Pascale, who added that it is the first time that this institution of 500 workers, in Panama, does such excessive work on a disease.

Pascale pointed out that in the 91 years of its existence, Gorgas had limited itself to its daily research on Dengue, Zika, Chicungunya, respiratory viruses, HIV, communicable diseases, parasitology and zoonotics, without imagining that a virus would arrive that would put science to redouble actions.

He stressed that the closest that a pandemic was experienced was with the AH1N1 virus, where 100 daily samples were run, however, with COVID-19, up to 4,500 tests were run for the months of June and July in a single day .

The ICGES, in turn, carries out a dozen parallel investigations of the pandemic, for example: the study of the effect of the virus on the stem cells of the placenta, the immune response, the need or not of a second dose to people who suffered COVID-19, seroprevalence studies and, in turn, the importance of surveillance of the genomic sequencing of this virus has been understood.

Despite the work that ICGES carries out tirelessly in Panama, the institution is preparing to carry out work in conjunction with several countries in the region, especially in sequencing the COVID-19.

The Gorgas has two auxiliary arms, in addition to its headquarters in the capital city. These are the Center for Research in Tropical Diseases, in Metetí, in Darien, and the Center for Research in Zoonoses, located in Divisa, both with highly qualified personnel for the study of diseases.

Pascale concluded that this virus has shown that its contagion occurs both through droplets of saliva and aerosols, which makes it more efficient, therefore, the use of a mask and face shield, as the main self-care measures, can make a difference between a healthy or infected person.

THOSE WHO HAVE HAD COVID-19 WILL RECEIVE A SINGLE DOSE OF THE VACCINE IN PANAMA

This decision is based on the results obtained in scientific studies.

Dr. Eduardo Ortega in charge of the National Secretariat of Science, Technology and Innovation (Senacyt) and a member of the Covid-19 Vaccine Research Consortium, confirmed that people who have been infected with coronavirus will only require one dose of the vaccine.

This decision is based on the results obtained in scientific studies after vaccinations made to doctors and people who had already suffered from covid-19.

Ortega points out that a dose produces a better immune response than in previously uninfected people

In addition, he explained that the vaccine is more reactogenic in people who have had COVID-19 previously.

Previous evidence suggests that the second dose may affect the immune response of antibodies.

It allows to speed up the vaccination process and immunize more people.

The specialist said that the objective is to vaccinate these people as quickly as possible, since the first dose offers between 70% and 90% efficiency.

Regarding the vaccination interval, Ortega indicated that the recommendation of the World Health Organization (WHO) at present is that the interval between doses can be extended up to 42 days (6 weeks).

In Panama, a vaccination interval between the first and the second vaccine dose of 3-6 weeks was proposed, in view of the fact that this has proven to be safe and effective.

Specialists assure that there is no evidence of loss of the immune response.

UNICEF: “IT CANNOT BE THAT SHOPPING CENTERS ARE OPENED AND NOT SCHOOLS”

Latin America and the Caribbean is the region that has been without face-to-face school classes for the longest time due to the pandemic. Countries like Panama, Peru and Ecuador are still under this scheme, and Unicef demands its reopening.

“It is estimated that at least 3 million children in this region will never go back to school. The longer this closing period lasts, the less chance there will be that many children will return,” Ruth Custode, Education Officer at Emergencies for Latin America and the Caribbean in Unicef.

From her office in Panama City, the specialist regrets that the resumption of face-to-face classes is not among the priorities of several countries on the continent.

“It cannot be possible for restaurants to open, for shopping centers to open, for casinos to open, for cinemas to open and for schools not to open. I think the most important thing is that we have to prioritize the opening of schools, “he said.

Some countries in the region that continue with closed schools -14 worldwide, until February 2021, according to a UNICEF report-, plan to reopen schools after having advanced their respective vaccination processes.

A Unicef report specifies that the world average closure of face-to-face classes due to the pandemic has been 95 days, while in Latin America it has been 158, when the school calendar is 190 days.

At the beginning of the pandemic, during 2020, the Ecuadorian specialist acknowledges that there was uncertainty and fear, with parents and teachers thinking that the school could be a place of contagion.

The situation continues in 2021 in countries with deteriorated school infrastructure and that do not have water.

However, she says, there are other regions “with the same and worse problems” that have opened their schools.

“When we talk about evidence, there are already several studies that tell us that schools are not the main source of contagion (…) That cannot be a cause for schools to continue closed,” she clarified.

“It is time to act now, we cannot wait any longer, schools have to open. Using security protocols, masks, the recommendations are there,” she considered.

According to Custode, the school is not only a place to learn but also a place of protection.

“At school, children often receive the only nutritious meal a day. If they do not go to school they do not have access to health services, protection immunization,” she explained.

“Children have had incredible levels of stress and anguish locked up for a year, cases of violence have increased, the issue not only of mistreatment but of sexual abuse, adolescent pregnancy. There have even been cases of suicide of young people”, says Custode .

Also, there is the importance of socialization. “Children need to be with their teachers and their peers. The more days this goes on, the more serious the consequences will be.”

Children who have been able to sustain their virtual classes over time are those with better connectivity in urban areas. However, the most affected are those with disabilities, migrants, from remote areas or who are in vulnerable conditions. “This inequity is going to worsen with the pandemic,” Custode explained.

Not to mention the prolonged exposure to screens by children, which can cause “vision, hearing, and posture problems.”

The differences are more profound, she said, because those who have possibilities have sought a way for their children to continue educating themselves, via ‘homeschooling – hiring a teacher at home. But children from the poorest strata do not have that option.

“All these are patch solutions, because face-to-face education can never be replaced by distance education. We are training citizens of the future, how are we going to train those citizens if they do not have the opportunity to socialize,” she said.

MORE THAN 2,630 SCHOOLS IN THE COUNTRY WOULD BE READY TO RETURN TO CLASSES

In schools they hope to comply with biosecurity measures.

Some 2,630 official schools have developed their biosafety protocols to establish the measures that must be implemented by the time they decide to hold face-to-face classes.

The director of Environmental Education of the Ministry of Education (Meduca), Carmen Aparicio, said that for five months the directors of schools throughout the country have been trained and oriented, they were given instructions and they were provided with the guide that would allow them develop biosafety protocols for a safe return to classrooms.

There are 2,630 official schools that would be ready to face the process, she assured.

According to Aparicio, the advance in the vaccination phase is an “essential factor to return to classes” and when all educators in official and private schools are vaccinated, the return to schools will be gradual and progressive.

For this, adjustments have been made in the educational facilities, the needs they have, such as water supply, have been verified, however, the Vice Ministry of Infrastructure has worked on the adaptation of these schools, since more than 700 will be vaccination centers and they have been intervened.

“To that extent we have directors who are very proactive and dynamic in obtaining certain supplies and personal protective equipment with the FECE [Fund for Equity and Quality in Education] and others with self-management, but we seek to provide these elements to schools with low enrollment and without financial resources, “said Aparicio.

As for the regions, she added that the schools in that area have been sent some hygiene and biosecurity supplies and in the next few days they will be sent 26 thousand bottles of alcoholic gel. ‘

Despite the progress, a face-to-face return to classes is not expected before half a year, when more people are expected to be vaccinated against covid-19.

THE WORLDWIDE HEALTH ORGANIZATION AUTHORIZING NEW AND CURRENT ANTICOVID VACCINES

According to the WHO, 81 vaccines against covid-19 are subject to clinical trials in humans, including those that have already been authorized and those that are in process.

Authorized, on the way or in development. This is the panorama of vaccines against covid-19 in the world, after the European authorities gave the green light to Johnson & Johnson.

Pfizer / BioNTech – Licensed in the European Union, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and many other countries. Developed by the American giant Pfizer and the German laboratory BioNTech, it is based on messenger RNA technology and shows a very high efficacy rate (95% in trials). It is sold under the trade name Comirnaty.

A study carried out in Israel and published this Thursday by its manufacturers, indicated that in real life its effectiveness is even 97% among symptomatic and most serious cases.

Modern: another messenger RNA vaccine, has characteristics very similar to the previous one, with 94.1% efficacy. This American vaccine is licensed in the EU, the United States, the United Kingdom (where it is not yet available), and in some other countries, such as Israel and Singapore.

AstraZeneca / Oxford: Designed by the English University of Oxford and the Anglo-Swedish laboratory AstraZeneca, this vaccine uses a different technology, called a “viral vector”. It is allowed in the EU, UK and some other countries like India, Argentina and South Korea.

It is 60% effective, according to the European Medicines Agency (EMA), while it is cheaper and easier to preserve than the previous two. However, it is the subject of controversy, which fuels mistrust.

On Thursday, Denmark, Norway and Iceland suspended their employment to investigate a possible link to cases of thrombosis. The EMA stressed, however, that it can continue to be used since for the moment the benefits outweigh the risks.

– Johnson & Johnson: This American vaccine became the fourth to be approved in the EU on Thursday. Manufactured by the Janssen-Cilag subsidiary, it is 66% effective overall and 85% effective in severe cases, according to the manufacturer. Unlike the others, it only requires one and not two injections. The United States, Canada and South Africa, the first country to administer it, have already been authorized.

Sputnik V – Developed by Russia, this viral vector vaccine is 91.6% effective. In addition to Russia, it is approved in 48 countries (Venezuela, Iran, South Korea, Argentina and Algeria, among others). The EMA is currently examining it for possible authorization.

Sinopharm: the two vaccines from this Chinese pharmaceutical company use the classic inactivated virus technique. They are present in China and in the United Arab Emirates, Hungary and Peru among others. According to their manufacturers, they are 79% effective, but the data on which they are based has not been published.

Sinovac: Another Chinese vaccine based on the inactivated virus technique. It is authorized for example in China, Chile, Brazil and Turkey. According to Sinovac, large-scale trials in Brazil showed an overall efficacy rate of around 50% (80% against the most severe forms), but the data was not published in this case either.

Bharat Biotech – Inactivated virus vaccine, manufactured and licensed in India.

CanSino: This Chinese viral vector vaccine was authorized in that country and in Mexico.

Novavax: The EMA examines this American vaccine based on proteins that trigger an immune response, without viruses. Its designers claim that it is 89.3% effective.

CureVac – This German messenger RNA vaccine is also under review by the EMA.

According to the World Health Organization, 81 vaccines against covid-19 are subject to clinical trials in humans, including those that have already been authorized and those that are in process. In addition, 182 vaccines are in the preclinical development phase and have not yet been tested in humans.

According to several in vitro studies, the English variant of the coronavirus does not significantly reduce the effectiveness of vaccines. On the other hand, several studies suggest that the South African variant does reduce it, mainly due to the E484K mutation, common to the Brazilian variant.

However, this does not mean that the vaccines are not at all effective against these variants.

Vaccine manufacturers are working on new versions adapted to the variants. Moderna announced on Wednesday that it had started injecting new-generation vaccines into the first patients, as part of a clinical trial aimed at evaluating their efficacy against the South African.

This is a list of the number of cases per day since the first case was discovered in Panama

END NOTES:

I had to memorize this poem back in high school and can still remember much of it to this day. Recently, a friend from school made the comment that he’d rather have to hear me recite this poem in Spanish with a French accent than any other form of torture. The comical part of that statement is that the Jabberwocky poem is impossible to translate to another language as the language used is made up. So, enjoy along with me the wondrous mind of Lewis Carroll in his ingenious creation of the Jabberwocky:

Jabberwocky

BY LEWIS CARROLL

’Twas brillig, and the slithy toves

Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:

All mimsy were the borogoves,

      And the mome raths outgrabe.

“Beware the Jabberwock, my son!

The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!

Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun

      The frumious Bandersnatch!”

He took his vorpal sword in hand;

Long time the manxome foe he sought—

So rested he by the Tumtum tree

      And stood awhile in thought.

And, as in uffish thought he stood,

The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,

Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,

      And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! And through and through

      The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!

He left it dead, and with its head

      He went galumphing back.

“And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?

Come to my arms, my beamish boy!

O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!”

      He chortled in his joy.

’Twas brillig, and the slithy toves

Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:

All mimsy were the borogoves,

      And the mome raths outgrabe.

For an entire year now, my closing statement has been “Stay safe… Stay Healthy… And by all means STAY HOME!!!” with an added snarky remark referring back to a comment in the report.

We no longer need to stay home, but when possible, you should until this is completely over with. Panama is finally planning on getting to vaccinating the teachers in April. At this rate, we’ll be fully vaccinated by November of this year more or less. So:

Stay Safe… Stay Healthy… And by all means get your vaccine if you deem so to be to your advantage.
