We.  Finally.  Went.  To.  The Beach!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yep, our little 4-person bubble floated to the countryside this last weekend and it was breathtaking.  Truth be told, we hit the beach harder than a Marine on a mission.  And, it looks like we may do it again this weekend, but with an even bigger bubble!

In preparation for our journey, I sent out a message to one of the popular facebook pages, “Young Expats in Panama”, which is known as a distinguished scene to make enquiries or to search for information on questions you just HAVE to have an answer to forthwith.  My pressing query was “Which are the best beaches to go to, for a bubble of 4, within 3 hours of Panama City?”  My wife is from Panama and I’ve been here 30 years now, but after over a full year of not going, I thought it prudent to get some advice from those who have gone more recently.  We didn’t care if it was the Pacific or the Atlantic, but did hope to find a calm place with a restaurant nearby.

The recommendations were gracious and numerous to say the least.  In no particular order, the suggestions were to go to Portobelo, Playa Blanca, El Palmar, Santa Clara, Farrallon, Mamey Island in Puerto Lindo, Caracol in Punta Chame, Taboga (I didn’t say “by car”, but I meant “by car”), Punta Chame, Westin Playa Bonita (not looking for the hotel vibe), Las Venas Azules (never heard of that one, “Intrepido Experience boat trip” (is that even a beach?), Aruba – 60-minute flight (Hahaha, good one), Contadora, San Blas, Bocas del Toro (that’s farther than 3 hours), Costa Arriba, Playa Escondida, Coronado, Linton Bay, Sonny Island Resort, Puerto La Guaira, Isla Grande, Palenque, Maria Chiquita, and Saboga.  Whew!  That was a lot more than I expected.  We also got the occasional joke response and an argument about access to the beaches being legally free to everyone and how hotels do not have the exclusive right to cut anyone off from them. Focus people! I’m just trying to get to the frickin beach, ok

So, we thought a bit and after much deliberation, we arrived at a compromise to head out to Santa Clara.  The main reason is that 9 years ago when Brett Jr was just 3 years old we took him out to Santa Clara and he loved it.  He loved it because there was a restaurant there and he got all excited telling us that he wanted to eat “Cejas”.  We were confused, but patient, as “Cejas” means “eyebrows” in Spanish. I’m certain he didn’t want to eat eyebrows.  He started to get frustrated because we didn’t understand him, so we sat down and worked with him to figure it out.  Finally, after no luck, we asked for a menu and went through the photos until his eyes opened wide and he pointed to a beautiful plate of “Almejas con Ajo”.  His “Cejas” were “Almejas” which are garlic clams that he tried a few months prior for the very first time.  This is by far one of my favorite stories about my boys.

Brett Jr amazed by his “eyelashes” and first illegal beer, about 9 years ago.

So we embarked on our journey Saturday morning suuuuuper early to avoid traffic, get to the beach early and get back home before 3PM.  That was the plan.  But on the way, we started seeing the signs for all of the beaches on the way and finally just thought “why go so far?”.  Let’s just go to any beach on the way.  Panama is so chock full of great beaches; we don’t need to go all the way to Santa Clara to be at a good beach.  So, we waited for the next turn off and made a sharp left.  We were entering the area of Punta Barco, which interestingly enough, no one mentioned in the Facebook group.

The experience was perfect.  The public beach is clean, monitored by the police, and the Junta Comunal of San Jose was also there watching over us and ensuring that they didn’t surpass the limit of people allowed on the beach.  For $5.00 it was totally worth the trip in.

I have no idea who “Zayira” is, but she sounds hot!

We left the beach around 11AM after nearly 3 hours of playing in the sand and floating in one of our favorite oceans.  We took the time to scout out a few other spots El Palmar and Playa Esmeraldas.  The next time we go, I think we’ll try El Palmar.  Come to think of it, I think we’re going to make a bucket list and try to get to as many new beaches that we can before the year is over.  If anything, we owe that to ourselves.

Aspirin: an immune barrier against the virus?

A new study suggests that aspirin could be a protective alternative against COVID-19.

For years, aspirin has proven to be a safe, proven, and inexpensive alternative for relieving pain, inflammation, and reducing fever. A recent study reveals that it could clearly trigger an immune response to prevent viral infections.

AN ALLY AGAINST COVID-19

A recent study revealed that aspirin has the ability to modulate immune responses in the human body to fight some viral infections. Taking this premise as a basis, a team of Israeli scientists raised the possibility that it could be a preventive treatment against COVID-19.

At low doses, no more than 75 mg, Bar-Ilan University and Barzilai Medical Center estimate that aspirin can prevent the development of a severe coronavirus infection. After conducting an observational epidemiological study, in which more than 10,000 people were analyzed, they realized that it can become an economically accessible shield against the disease.

Scientists in Israel found that patients treated with aspirin got relief in a significantly shorter period of time than those who did not. In addition, the duration of the illness was two to three days shorter, depending on whether they had health conditions prior to becoming ill.

The leader of the research project, Eli Magen from the Barzilai Medical Center, is optimistic about the results achieved:

“This observation of the possible beneficial effect of low-dose aspirin on COVID-19 infection is preliminary, but looks very promising,” he told FEBS Press.

Despite the favorable results of the study, Magen emphasizes the importance of repeating the study results using larger samples, which may include patients from other hospitals and countries. In this way, his hypothesis can be verified in a larger population, which could benefit from this new immune barrier.

MINSA ALREADY HAS THE FUNDS TO PURCHASE MORE VACCINES

The Minister and Deputy Minister of Health, Luis Sucre and Ivette Berrío in the Budget Committee of the National Assembly, this March 17.

The Budget Commission of the National Assembly approved an initial transfer in favor of the Ministry of Health (Minsa) for $ 18 million for the purchase of 2 million doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine against Covid-19.

Ivette Berrío, Deputy Minister of Health, assured that they were acquired at a “good price” and that they should begin to arrive in the second quarter of the year.

Two other transfers were also endorsed for the payment of salaries of health personnel from that portfolio. Among them, $ 2.3 million is contemplated for the hiring of 423 new employees, a total that includes 300 nurses and 100 doctors.

Commissioners questioned Sucre about reports of adverse effects from the AstraZeneca vaccine, of which Panama has already secured doses. Sucre said that Panama “will wait in peace” for the corresponding studies to come out. She assured that to date it has not been proven that the vaccine is the cause.

The Budget Commission also approved $ 11.2 million for Housing and Land Management, led by Rogelio Paredes. These funds, according to the minister, will be used to “pay expired bills and make payments to contractors.” For her part, the deputy minister of the Ministry of Government, Juana López, came to support transfers for $ 4.7 million. This, she explained, is for the purpose of reinforcing the vehicle fleet of the National Civil Protection Service (Sinaproc) and acquiring new uniforms. The Budget Commission is chaired by PRD Benicio Robinson.

PANAMA WILL MODIFY THE SANITARY PROTOCOL FOR TRAVELERS ‘ENTRY

Panama currently requires people who enter the country to test negative for COVID-19.

The health protocol for the entry of travelers to Panama will be modified, announced the Minister of Health, Luis Francisco Sucre, who explained that anyone who has been immunized against the coronavirus should not undergo a COVID-19 detection test, as long as they present their card.

People with full COVID vaccination should not have to get swabbed now, “because those people who have their doses set, even if they come from other countries, do not need swabs or traceability, because these people must already have immunity in an adequate state”, Sucre explained this Wednesday, adding that this will apply to airports, ports and borders.

Sucre also said that epidemiological surveillance will be strengthened for the entry of travelers from the United Kingdom, South Africa, the United States and Brazil, due to the presence of new strains in those regions.

Panama currently requires people who enter the country to test negative for COVID-19.

“A person who has already fulfilled his role of vaccination will not have to do any type of swab to enter the country and is not subject to traceability,” reiterated the head of the Minsa.

COVID-19 COMPLICATES PREGNANT WOMEN’S HEALTH

Specialists affirm that a pregnant woman with Covid-19 has three times the risk of admission to an intensive care unit.

Pregnant women are at greater risk of presenting severe forms of Covid-19 and, therefore, more likely to be hospitalized.

Organizations such as the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the Panamanian Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology reach this conclusion, which during the pandemic have been following this issue very closely.

According to the latest PAHO epidemiological update on Covid-19 in America, the highest increase in accumulated confirmed cases of pregnant women with the virus occurred in Cuba and Panama.

Until March 10, the country reported an increase of 75% of cases of infected pregnant women, compared to the same period last month.

Jaime Sánchez, president of the Panamanian Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology, pointed out that studies suggest that the virus can cause alterations in the placenta, but it is not clear if the infection can be transmitted from the mother to the fetus.

For PAHO, information is lacking on abortion rates and the relationship between them and virus infection.

High increase in pregnant women with Covid-19

Despite the fact that there is a substantial decrease in Covid-19 cases at the national level, the population of pregnant women has been presenting a high and risky increase in infections.

The latest epidemiological update of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) – published this week – indicates that, in America, until last March 10, the highest increase in accumulated confirmed cases of pregnant women with Covid-19 occurred in Cuba and Panama, while, in deaths, it was observed in Chile.

According to the document, until that date 2,264 pregnant women have been reported with the new coronavirus, and 12 deaths in the country. A month earlier, on February 9, the figure in Panama was 1,289 infected women and 7 deaths, which now in March represents an increase of 75% in cases and 71% in deaths.

The specialists of the international organization state that while in some countries of the region the monitoring of pregnant women who are positive for SARS-CoV-2 continues, there is still a lack of information that accounts for the abortion rates, and the relationship between them and the infection. by the virus.

They used as an example an investigation carried out in Brazil, in five cases of stillbirth in women with Covid-19, without any other significant clinical or obstetric disorder.

In the aforementioned study, the intense placental inflammatory reaction raises the possibility of a direct effect of the virus on the placenta, suggesting that fetal death could be a result of SARS-CoV-2 infection in pregnancy.

For PAHO, the results of the Covid-19 surveillance show a “higher risk” in pregnant women, so that they can present serious forms of the new coronavirus and, therefore, are more likely to be hospitalized.

For this reason, it recommends strengthening the surveillance system, in particular of maternal and perinatal mortality, as well as extremely serious maternal, maternal and neonatal morbidity.

“In addition, we must facilitate access to tests for the early detection of suspected cases in pregnant women, for the confirmation of diagnosis and timely management, including taking measures to isolate the cases and quarantine the contacts,” he concludes.

In the country, organizations such as the Panamanian Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology, have requested the Ministry of Health (Minsa) that pregnant women be vaccinated, regardless of gestational age. This, precisely, so that pregnant women with the new coronavirus do not have serious complications during this delicate stage.

High risk

In the words of Jaime Sánchez, president of the Panamanian Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the figures published by PAHO are showing us that pregnant women continue to be a “high risk” group in the pandemic, and that vaccination in this group of the population should be a public health policy in the country.

“Sometimes you have to evaluate the figures and as a country we have to see what is happening on the issue of Covid-19 and pregnant women. We at the Panamanian Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology are convinced that the benefits of vaccinating pregnant women outweigh the risks, ”he said.

According to the specialist, so far studies indicate that the virus can cause alterations and damage to the placenta. However, he stressed that, at the moment, what is not clear is that this infection can be transmitted from the mother to the fetus.

“Given the numbers of pregnant women with Covid-19, the country must make a decision in this regard, about vaccinating this population,” concluded Sánchez.

This year, an investigation led by the Gorgas Memorial Institute for Health Studies (Icges), in collaboration with the Santo Tomás Hospital and the Social Security Fund, detected SARS-CoV-2 in the placenta of two patients as symptomatic with Covid-19.

As part of the study, there were two cases of pregnant women in their third gestational trimester, who were admitted for cesarean delivery and who, through the universal screening test, tested positive for Covid-19 and remained asymptomatic.

Analyzes revealed a SARS-CoV-2 infection on the fetal side of the placenta in both patients. However, PCR tests performed on babies 24 hours after birth, through nasopharyngeal swabs, were negative for SARS-CoV-2.

Following the findings, the Icges recommended a long-term follow-up analysis of the neonates to determine the possibility of clinical manifestations and developmental abnormalities in them.

MINSA MONITORS INFORMATION ON ASTRAZENECA VACCINE

Yesterday the Vacunatón at Rommel Fernández opened its doors.

The Minister of Health, Luis Francisco Sucre, reported that the public health and epidemiology teams are following up on the information about serious sequelae that the AstraZeneca vaccine is leaving and that has caused several European countries to suspend its use.

“Until then, we cannot make a decision without consulting, so we await notification from the Pan American Health Organization and other international organizations and we are monitoring what is happening in other countries regarding this issue,” he said.

Panama agreed with the pharmaceutical company to deliver one million 92 thousand doses (1,092,000) at a cost of $ 4.3 million.

The AstraZeneca vaccine is credited with being associated with clot formation in patients who were inoculated.

The World Health Organization (WHO) stated that there are still no reasons to stop using the vaccine, since no relationship has been demonstrated with the alterations attributed to it.

PANAMA EXPECTS TO RECEIVE THE FIRST DOSE LOT OF ASTRAZENECA IN APRIL, WHILE 11 COUNTRIES SUSPEND THE USE OF THIS VACCINE AGAINST COVID-19

About 9 countries in Europe, one in Asia and one in Africa have suspended vaccination with AstraZeneca.

While at least 11 countries have suspended vaccination with the AstraZeneca vaccine, the Panamanian authorities state that we must wait for the results of the scientific studies of this vaccine.

After being questioned about reports of adverse side effects of the AstraZeneca vaccine against covid-19, the Minister of Health of Panama, Luis Francisco Sucre, said that “we must wait for the results of the scientific studies of this vaccine”, to determine if remains or not on the immunization plan. However, he said there is hope that the first batch of AstraZeneca doses will arrive in Panama in April.

He stated that “normally when events like these happen, one tends to suspend, even the company AstraZeneca itself, we have information that it has endured some batches that are related to where the information from European countries comes from.”

Serious allergies such as anaphylaxis have been identified among the possible side effects of the AstraZeneca vaccine; In addition, possible thrombotic events of the cerebral veins (clots) are being studied.

Due to these reports, countries such as Germany, Italy, France, Denmark, Thailand, the Netherlands, Ireland, Norway, Iceland, the Republic of Congo and Bulgaria suspended immunization with this vaccine preventively.

The Deputy Minister of Health, Ivett Berrío said recently that the contract to acquire one million doses from the pharmaceutical AstraZeneca remains in place, despite alleged problems with it.

She explained that organizations such as the European Medicines Agency have indicated that the AstraZeneca vaccine does not present any indication that it is the cause of the anomaly, so it is expected to receive it by April or May.

She insisted that the Panamanian government maintains its position that any vaccine that is purchased to be used in Panama must be “safe and effective.”

Berrío acknowledged that the health team is waiting for the information on the subject, especially “we are awaiting all scientific answers.”

POST COVID-19 CLINIC OF HSMA INDICATES WHICH SEQUELS ARE MOST CARED FOR

After overcoming COVID-19, patients have sequelae such as fatigue, depression and difficulty sleeping.

The coordinator of the Post COVID-19 Clinic of the San Miguel Arcángel Hospital (HSMA), Dr. Daniel José Alexis pointed out which are the sequelae that patients suffer the most after having contracted the virus.

“After a week of the inauguration of the PostCOVID-19 Comprehensive Care Center at the San Miguel Arcángel Hospital, the main sequelae have been detected: anxiety, depression, fatigue, tiredness and difficulty sleeping,” said Alexis.

It was detailed that so far 10 patients have been treated, some of them have been referred to physiatry and physiotherapy, after presenting symptoms of muscular atrophy, after their recovery in hospital wards and intensive care units.

The entity’s report also indicates that there have been people with respiratory sequelae, patients, who, in the opinion of Dr. Alexis, need a more specialized evaluation, which includes X-rays, a laboratory and then to be referred to a pulmonologist.

While the regional director of San Miguelito, Yaritzel Ríos added that parallel to this clinic, the Regional inaugurated another Post COVID-19 care consultation at the Veranillo Health Center, in order to provide comprehensive care to patients who have suffered the illness.

The comprehensive post-Covid-19 care clinic of the San Miguel Arcángel Hospital has an opening hours of 7:00 a.m. at 7:00 p.m., while the Veranillo Health Center Clinic is open from 7:00 a.m. at 3:00 p.m.

LOSS OF SMELL ANTICIPATES A GOOD PROGNOSIS FOR PATIENTS WITH COVID-19

Through a study carried out in numerous centers, with the largest sample used so far (5,868 admitted patients).

Loss of smell is not only one of the factors for early diagnosis of covid-19, it is also a symptom of a good prognosis of the disease, according to an international investigation led by scientists from the Complutense University and the San Carlos de Madrid Clinical Hospital. .

Through a study carried out in numerous centers, with the largest sample used so far (5,868 admitted patients), the researchers confirmed that although its origin is still a mystery, anosmia – loss of smell – can act as a good prognostic factor for disease. disease.

“These results have many implications, from the initial evaluation of patients to the ability to understand the pathophysiology. Possibly, the invasion of the nasal epithelium causes an adequate immunity to be activated avoiding cytokine storms ”, explained Jesús Porta-Etessam, head of the Neurology Section of the Hospital Clínico San Carlos, professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM) and first author of the work.

In addition to identifying anosmia as a good prognostic factor, the researchers have also determined that olfactory and taste dysfunctions are more frequent in women (12.41% vs 8.67%), in those under 65 years of age and in patients with pathologies kidney, lung, heart, neurological or oncological.

The results obtained on one of the earliest symptoms of the coronavirus can serve as criteria when classifying patients or making therapeutic decisions, according to the Complutense University of Madrid in a note released this Monday.

The conclusions of this study could be used to elaborate “risk indices” of complications, which according to Porta-Etessam would be very useful and interesting when observing, treating or evaluating the discharge of patients.

“THE GOVERNMENT EVALUATES EXTENDING THE PANAMA SOLIDARITY PLAN UNTIL DECEMBER”, MINISTER VALDERRAMA

Until now, the Panama Solidario Plan would support Panamanians affected by the pandemic with food only until June of this year.

The Minister of Agricultural Development of Panama (MIDA), Augusto Valderrama indicated that the Government is evaluating extending the Panama Solidario Plan until December of this year in view of the delay with vaccines, the economic situation and the existing social stability in the country.

“The decision so far, taken by the president, is until June 30 and is being evaluated until December 31 and it seems to me that given the social conditions and what the Panama Solidario program has represented in the stabilization of the country and the social peace in reaching those most affected … it will be the safest thing to last until December 31, “explained Valderrama.

On the other hand, the minister pointed out that a debt of B / .24 million is maintained with the producers who have contributed to the Panama Solidario Program, with meat and perishable products to the bags that the Government delivers to the most needy Panamanians in the middle of the pandemic, at the end of March.

The minister announced that this week about B / .11 million will be paid to producers and companies that provide other manufactured products such as sugar, flour, pasta, tunas, etc. and expects that the 2020 debts will be canceled by the end of March.

In addition, an expedited line has been established for producers to deliver the documents they need to deliver to the regional offices of MIDA and the Agricultural Marketing Institute (IMA) and send them to the Comptroller General of the Republic.

CONVERSATIONS TO ACQUIRE RUSSIAN VACCINE ADVANCE AND WORK ON THE REGULATORY PART

After Panama’s request to acquire the Russian Sputnik V vaccine, the Foreign Minister of the Republic, Erika Mouynes, said that they had already responded, talks were held at a high level and the part in which they are working now is the regulatory one.

Mouynes indicated that Farmacias y Drogas has requirements and protocols through which all vaccines that are acquired by Panama must pass and they are in those conversations.

Panama requested at least 3 million of the Sputnik V vaccine.

In addition, the effort to search for vaccines in different pharmaceutical houses continues. Mouynes said in Noticias AM that the population has to keep calm, because the vaccines will continue to come.

She explained that within the Pfizer portfolio there are 5 million contracted vaccines. As of March 31, the pharmaceutical company must have completed 450,000 doses in the first quarter. “There are still many vaccines to come, there are many pending doses, each quarter they are progressively increased,” she stressed. She urged Panamanians to have confidence in the process.

She on Covax, which includes the AstraZeneca vaccine that has been suspended in several countries, she explained that the system has a portfolio and they offer to countries as they have available. The first round was given and Panama was offered around 180 thousand doses of AstraZeneca vaccines and the country opted for that lot and in April they should be arriving in Panama.

The chancellor also spoke about the ratification of two important conventions, one against racism and the other in favor of the rights of the elderly. She indicated that they are past due debts, which had been signed, but not ratified.

Regarding the possible repercussions for the country due to the case of the alleged mistreatment and abuse of minors in shelters, Mouynes said that so far they have had an approach from the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) and the whole situation is being considered .

END NOTES:

Today, a friend sent me a message on WhatsApp, and I noted a quote from George Bernard Shaw as his WhatsApp photo.  “Those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.”  So, I thought it was high time I added some quotes from this wise and comedic gentleman.  He is accredited to hundreds of hilarious quotes, and these are just a few:

George Bernard Shaw quotes

Legend has it that George simply looked old since he was 11 years of age. This was from his High School Graduation album.

“If you want to tell people the truth, make them laugh, otherwise they’ll kill you.”
― George Bernard Shaw

“The reasonable man adapts himself to the world: the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man.”

“People are always blaming their circumstances for what they are. I don’t believe in circumstances. The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and if they can’t find them, make them.”
― George Bernard Shaw, Mrs. Warren’s Profession

“When two people are under the influence of the most violent, most insane, most delusive, and most transient of passions, they are required to swear that they will remain in that excited, abnormal, and exhausting condition continuously until death do them part.”

The mean dog fights the good dog all the time. When asked which dog wins, he reflected for a moment and replied, The one I feed the most.”
