Travel; Panama continues in negotiations with pharmaceutical houses, Rebound of cases will be inevitable, Sales in restaurants increase; If the Suez was in Wisconsin

Friday, March 26, 2021

Someone finally had the chance to travel outside of Panama after more than 12 months on confinement.  Oh, that someone is me!!  If you haven’t travelled out of Panama since the lockdown, here are a few pointers on how to go about it.

First of all, it’s not really a big deal.  The airport and airlines are simply more service-oriented than they were before.  And if they weren’t before, they are now.  Got it?

First of all, get your PCR done on time.  You have 48hrs in most locations prior to travel and in others it may only be 24 hours.  You need to talk to your airline or check the respective embassy website of the country you’re going to.  And, although most locations will accept a digital copy of your PCR test results, other countries will not.  Kinda like El Salvador, for example.  “ElSal” as I affectionately call it, actually keeps a copy of your PCR results once you get to immigration.

I was impressed by the orderly lines as well.  Actually, Panama as a whole has come a long way from the chaos.  I remember one time when I was going back to Panama after a quick stay in the USA.  We were late changing flights in Miami and were running through the terminals like OJ Simpson (no, not in a white Bronco).  Wife asks, “Which gate is ours?”.  Without looking at our tickets again, I could see down the end of the terminal a horrific gaggle of stressed-out Latinos.  “There, honey, right over there.”, I assured her, slowing down to a walking pace.  It was literally the only gate with a mess of people who couldn’t get into a straight line.  As a matter of fact, one of the people caught up in that mess was former VP of Panama Ricardo Arias Calderon.  And I don’t mean, he was just there minding his own business either.  He was right up in it with the rest of them.  And did I mention how nice it is to shop at Quesos Chela now too?  Damn it was like going to a sold-out Van Halen concert at near max-capacity, storming the rows to get closer to stage, but just for a cheese empanada and some chicheme!

Boarding and exiting the plane is finally a smarter process.  Before, you were seated by “Groups”.  I almost always got group 4 or 5 unless I was flying Executive.  The absolute stupidest way to board a plane is randomly.  Now, they’re seating you from back to front.  Holy crap, ain’t that smart??  And, when you land, you exit from front to back and you wait until those in front of you actually stand up, get their things and leave.  Remember that guy in row 30 who would grab his bags and run ahead as far as he could before the plane finishes taxiing and the “fasten seat belt” sign is shut off?  Yeah, he can’t do that anymore.  We had one guy do that on this one and the flight attendant with her magical pointy finger, told the man to return to his seat immediately.  Finally a score for the home team!

Learn a bit about the country you’re going to and how they’re handling COVID.  Some have said that Panama is crazy with their restrictions and then some other countries are just the opposite.  So, don’t complain.  You could very well arrive to an “ass to front” scenario in line to get your bags if you’re not careful.  Be smart and avoid the clusters.

I was pampered on my trip.  The scenario I was under gave me police escort from the plane to the taxi and having just carry-ons, I didn’t have to worry about that issue either.  Just play it safe and make sure your driver knows how to spell your name properly or end up getting it bastardized into a near-racist confrontation like I did.  I came thiiiiiiiiis close to calling my representative from BLM.

“E-Coos me – you Mister Brett?”, someone asked. I turn, “Why yes, sir, I’m mister…. woah, dude, what the….!?!?”

TOP NEWS and TIDBITS:

Yoli’s Wisdom

We know that COVID-19 vaccines work very well, but we never thought they were perfect.

Even with efficacy rates as high as 95% in Pfizer trials, there is still a small chance of becoming infected with the coronavirus after being fully vaccinated. Now that the vaccine rollout is underway in the United States, we are starting to see some cases.

Two letters to the editor published this week in The New England Journal of Medicine summarize these rare postvaccinal infections in three different hospital systems.

Only 4 of the 8,121 fully vaccinated employees at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas tested positive for COVID-19 between December 15, 2020 and January 28, 2021.

At UC San Diego Health and the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles, only 7 of 14,990 healthcare workers tested positive 2 or more weeks after receiving a second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccines.

These results should not deter anyone from getting vaccinated; if anything, they just show that even vaccinated people should continue to take some precautions for now, says one of the study’s authors.

“We are convinced that this data should not lead people to say: ‘Let’s all get vaccinated and then we can stop wearing masks,'” Francesca Torriani, an infectious disease physician who has told Denise Grady for The New York Times led the California study. “These measures have to continue until a larger segment of the population is vaccinated.”

Even in cases of infection, vaccinated people had low amounts of virus

In any case, from COVID-19, a person’s viral load – the amount of virus in their system – determines how likely they are to infect another person.

Fortunately, even when vaccines have failed to prevent infection, injections appear to keep viral loads low.

A February study in Israel, which has not yet been reviewed by experts, looked at more than 1,000 people who had tested positive for the virus after receiving 2 doses of the Pfizer vaccine. Those who received COVID-19 between 12 and 28 days after their second dose had 4 times less virus in their body compared to a normal case.

‘THE REPORT OF COVID-19 CASES WILL BE INEVITABLE’, WARN HEALTH EXPERTS

Alarms are set off for an imminent increase in covid-19 cases in the coming weeks. More affected patients are already beginning to arrive at hospitals.

The health authorities assure that they already have a contingency plan prepared to face a new increase in cases of covid-19 in the country, as stated by the director of the Social Security Fund, Enrique Lau, who also warned that several countries are already confronting a third and even fourth wave. In Panama the scenario will be the same or worse if people relax the measures.

Intensive care physician Julio Sandoval warned on his twitter account that “There will inevitably be a rebound in cases in the coming weeks, and that they have seen public and private emergency rooms this weekend with an increase in consultations for covid-19, hence the 10% -15% are hospitalized. ” He recommends not relaxing biosecurity measures and to follow mass vaccination more quickly.

This Sunday a low number of new cases was registered, only 326 people were positive and two deaths registered. But it is warned that the panorama could change.

The President of the Republic himself, Laurentino Cortizo, asked the country to take more care at this time, because it is a treacherous virus. He explained that last year on October 31 we had a positivity percentage of 9.8% but that, in January, we had risen to 28.1% and many more deaths.

For the Panamanian Society of Public Health, it is time to tighten to avoid duplicating cases. Dr. Carlos Gálvez reiterates that in the regions with more cases, people should be placed in hotels or shelters so that they do not continue to infect their own relatives.

He added that people’s behavior will be crucial at this time.

The epidemiologist Ricardo Chong said that we must continue looking for infected people to isolate them and in this way avoid the increase in cases.

To date, the positivity rate is around 6.4%, the ideal according to epidemiologists is to be able to lower it to 1%.

PAHO WARNS THAT THE VIRUS IS DANGEROUSLY INCREASING IN THE REGION

Mass vaccination is key to curbing the virus.

The new outbreaks of Covid-19 cases that are registered in several countries of the American continent reflect a dangerous increase in the virus, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) warned.

The regional entity highlights that the pandemic is hitting South American nations such as Brazil, Chile and Paraguay with more force, while in Central America the cases are notably increasing in Guatemala.

“The Covid-19 virus is not receding, nor is the pandemic beginning to disappear,” warned PAHO Director Carissa F. Etienne, according to a publication by the organization.

In Panama, epidemiologists and health authorities are waiting for a new upturn in cases to take place in the coming weeks, after the reopening of commercial activities and flexibility in the mobility of people.

According to PAHO, the pandemic is accelerating in some areas of the Americas, including Guatemala, where the increase in cases and hospitalizations is “depleting the capacity of beds in hospitals.

In addition, that in the Caribbean an increase in cases is reported in Antigua and Barbuda, Aruba, Cuba and Curaçao. Cases in Jamaica are even reported to have risen steadily for several weeks.

“As the virus spreads, hospitalizations increase. We urgently need to increase vaccination of our most vulnerable populations”, she said.

Regarding vaccination in the region, she said, more than 155.8 million doses of vaccines have been applied, including those delivered through the Covax mechanism.

“We still don’t have the vaccines we need to protect everyone. This is what happens when the whole world depends on very few manufacturers. We must also look for ways to share vaccines more equitably between countries, “she added.

Panama is among the countries that will receive vaccines under this system and according to national authorities they could arrive in April.

The transmission of the new coronavirus has stabilized in recent weeks in Panama, but authorities from the Ministry of Health (Minsa) and epidemiologists call for caution.

The reason for not relaxing: there are still clusters or conglomerates reported – especially in the interior of the country – that keep the infections alive and, in turn, there are high incidence rates in provinces such as Veraguas and Chiriquí.

“THE COLD VIRUS MAY OFFER TEMPORARY PROTECTION AGAINST COVID”

Argentine Pablo Murcia, a virologist at the University of Glasgow (Scotland), explains the study on the coronavirus that reveals, among other things, that “the common cold virus can offer temporary protection.

Argentine Pablo Murcia, virologist at the University of Glasgow (Scotland), explains in an interview with Efe the findings of a study on the coronavirus released this Tuesday that reveals, among other things, that “the common cold virus can offer temporary protection against the covid “.

His research with cells in the laboratory, published in the American journal “Journal of Infectious Diseases”, shows that an infection with rhinovirus – responsible for the cold – generates “an innate response” in humans that seems to block the progression of SARS -CoV-2.

This means on the one hand that when a person has the cold virus, they would be protected from the covid, although only for a few days.

On the other hand, Murcia and his team also established, thanks to mathematical models developed together with Imperial College London, that “when there is a high prevalence of rhinovirus in the environment, new cases of covid will decrease”, a fact that going forward it will be important to manage the pandemic.

THE INTERACTION BETWEEN VIRUSES

At the end of 2019, Murcia published a study that showed that the cold virus “interacts negatively with the flu virus” – that is, when there is a high prevalence of rhinovirus in the population, there is low circulation of influenza, and vice versa.

In the context of the pandemic, this led him to think that there could also be a correlation between the rhinovirus and the current coronavirus.

The challenge to study the interaction between viruses is that the rhinovirus is not diagnosed by test, so it is more difficult to measure its prevalence and, in any case, the restrictions to contain the covid have reduced its incidence and that of other pathogens.

“What we did was evaluate if there are interactions between rhinovirus and SARS-CoV-2, using a very sophisticated cell culture model” in the laboratory that replicates well “the structure and function of the human respiratory system,” he explains.

“What we observed is that when you infect (the cells) with both viruses at the same time, the rhinovirus replicates perfectly well and, on the other hand, SARS-CoV-2 cannot reproduce, it cannot be transmitted from cell to cell”, he points out.

DATA FOR POSSIBLE TREATMENTS

Murcia and his team believe that the rhinovirus provokes an innate response in the cell that, although it is not affected “because it has evolved to counteract it”, it instead prevents SARS-CoV-2 from replicating.

This immune response “is mediated by interferon, a molecule that has a strong antiviral effect” and is used in some drugs.

The virologist points out that if through genomics the genes that activate the rhinovirus are identified, one can try to see “the effects of those genes individually against the covid virus”, and if antiviral genes are detected, this could eventually lead to to develop new treatments.

INTERACTION OF VIRUSES IN SOCIETY

“When you have a high prevalence of rhinovirus in the population, you have low circulation of influenza and vice versa,” explains Murcia. What, according to the models studied with the Imperial, would also occur between SARS-CoV-2 and the rhinovirus, which tends to become more present in countries of the northern hemisphere between March and September.

“The coronavirus has to compete with the other viruses that are also circulating, therefore, in times when we have a high number of common colds caused by rhinovirus, a drop in the number of covid cases could be expected,” he says. .

“At the public health level, this allows for forward planning for the health system; for example, how many beds are going to be needed,” he adds.

This effect, tested in the laboratory, that the cold virus has to counteract the coronavirus could partly explain why children, who suffer from more rhinovirus than adults, have not caught as much covid in this pandemic, says the expert.

THE INFLUENZA AND COVID-19 VACCINE WILL BE APPLIED SIMULTANEOUSLY

Since the delivery of the first batches of Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine began, Panama has received a total of 346,360 doses, of which 309,000 doses have been applied. For the national coordinator of the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI), this means that vaccination has been given in an expeditious and organized manner.

Currently, there has been a pause in the application of the first dose in phase 2A, to be able to apply the second dose to members of the security forces, people with disabilities and older adults who have already been immunized and thus conclude the process that requires this medication.

Hewitt said that, despite being applying the second dose, people who belong to this phase and who could not access the first can approach the places destined to obtain it. For this, people can call the authorized telephone lines and book an appointment.

“For this March 22, we had scheduled access to more than 55 thousand people who should complete the second dose because this program is timed. We mainly had a 22-day schedule for the second dose, but we have lengthened it to a month to be able to apply the first dose to more people, ”she explained.

Once the application of the second dose is completed, the programmed is to continue with the 8-10 circuit, however, Hewitt clarified that the programming could change because this was done based on the places most affected by the virus, but when to evolve there are sites that are more affected.

“Initially the circuits in the Panama area were the most affected, this has evolved so that we can cross to other circuits that are not programmed to attack the increase in cases in a timely manner,” she said.

In circuit 8-10, 33,322 older adults will be inoculated.

As programmed by the PAI, after finishing the 8-10 circuit, the 8-7 would continue, later the 8-9 and 8-4 which could be attended simultaneously as they are small circuits, once finished with these circuits would then go to the interior of the country.

Hewitt indicated that at the beginning of the day about 200 health officials signed a release of responsibility because they did not want to apply the first dose, but now that the second dose is being applied they are claiming that they do want to apply it.

“We are experiencing everything, there are people who want the vaccine, others who do not want it, others who now that the second dose is coming do not want it. There is a hodgepodge of attitudes that we still cannot understand what they want, whether to put it on or not, ”stressed the PAI chief.

Hewitt also said that the last batch of the first 450 thousand doses that would be delivered in the first quarter arrives on March 29, but from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs they were told that in their negotiations they have stipulated to continue receiving batches from the first week of April and for this we have programmed ourselves.

“We have programming until May to apply the vaccines that are arriving, which hopefully will be 70 thousand doses up,” she said.

Regarding the influenza vaccination day, which is applied to older adults, children under five years of age and chronic patients, which would facilitate the process, applying the influenza vaccine in places where the COVID vaccine is not being applied- 19.

ANIMALS ALSO CONTRACT COVID-19; ALREADY HAVE A VACCINE

Animals also get COVID-19; they already have a vaccine.

The gorilla coughs at the San Diego Safari Park Zoo were the first warning. What many feared was soon confirmed: A group of gorillas were the first apes to test positive for the coronavirus.

Around the world, scientists and veterinarians are striving to protect animals from COVID-19, often using the same methods used with humans: social distancing, medical check-ups and, in some zoo animals, a vaccine.

Karen, a 28-year-old orangutan, is the world’s first ape to receive a COVID-19 vaccine on January 26 at the San Diego Zoo.

Karen received two doses of the vaccine from Zoetis, a New Jersey laboratory focused on animal medicine, and has had no adverse reactions. Since then, another nine primates have been vaccinated and four more received the first dose this month and are waiting for the second in April.

“We want to protect our great apes,” said zoo animal health manager Nadine Lamberski, adding that she felt the need to do something after eight gorillas were infected.

They are believed to have been infected by an employee who had contracted the virus but had no symptoms. Seven gorillas recovered without having had strong symptoms, but the eighth, elderly, suffered pneumonia, probably caused by the virus, and heart problems. They gave him antibiotics and heart medicine, and he received antibodies to prevent the virus from infecting the cells.

About three dozen zoos around the world are purchasing the Zoetis vaccine, which elicits strong immune responses in certain species.

“We want to seize the opportunity to get the Zoetis vaccine for our great apes,” said Oakland Zoo Director of Veterinarians Alex Herman, who ordered 100 doses.

Zoetis obtained a permit from the Department of Agriculture to test the vaccine at the San Diego Zoo and is now awaiting authorization to offer the vaccine to other zoos.

Scientists believe that the coronavirus originated in bats and then spread to humans. Now many researchers fear that humans could infect other susceptible species.

“Right now humans are the main carriers of SARS-CoV-2, with consequences for several animal species,” said Arinjay Banerjee, a researcher at McMaster University in Canada.

Great apes, such as gorillas, who share 98% of their DNA with humans, are especially susceptible, as are felines. So far, infections have been confirmed in gorillas, tigers and zoo lions, in domestic cats and dogs, mink from hatcheries and at least one wild mink, in Utah.

The scientists also found that ferrets, raccoon dogs and white-tailed deer are susceptible, and pigs and cattle are not.

“This can be a problem, especially if the virus starts to spread between species with very small populations,” said Kate Langwig, an infectious disease specialist at Virginia Tech.

Another concern is the possibility of the virus spreading to other species and producing new variants, complicating efforts to contain the pandemic.

In Denmark, employees of a mink farm accidentally infected the animals. As the virus spread, it began to mutate and employees were infected with a new variant. Given this, the government ordered the killing of millions of minks.

Many measures to avoid contagion with animals are known: masks, disinfected equipment, periodic medical check-ups and physical distancing.

Since the outbreak, the San Diego Zoo has installed more fans in enclosed primate areas to improve air circulation. Staff wear two face masks and masks, and limit the time spent indoors with the animals.

“COVID-19 is a wake-up call that made us see that these viruses can pass from animals to people and from people to great apes,” said Kristen Gilardi, CEO of Gorilla Doctors, an organization that works in the preservation of animals.

There are only a thousand free mountain gorillas in the world.

RESTAURANT SALES INCREASE 40%

René Quevedo, an expert on labor issues, said that the increase in unemployment is not only an issue that occurred in Panama, but it was devastating.

After the quarantine was lifted on the weekends and the curfew begins at 10 at night, sales in restaurants have increased and are between 40% and 50%, compared to 2019. However, the profits will see them by the end of the year.

The president of the Association of Restaurants, Afines de Panamá, Domingo De Obaldia, said that diners are arriving at restaurants, so that in this way an increase in sales is seen, although at the moment they will not have profits in view of that for now the sales will only serve to pay the debts acquired in 2020.

“Throughout all of 2020 we acquired debts because the operations were closed and now that we have reopened we have to face the bank commitments, payroll, among others,” said De Olbaldia.

He added that the measure allowed restaurant owners to reinstate between 500 to 700 workers, so they advocate for the implementation of other measures and not cause the closure of more restaurants, which is about 2,600 to date.

He reiterated to the government that support for making longer-term payment arrangements so that they have cash flow and that financing is made more flexible is important in order to continue operating.

As a result of the pandemic in the hotel and restaurant sector, a third of their jobs (2 out of 3 women) disappeared, a situation that worsened, since as of January 2021 half of the restaurants have already closed their doors and only 3% of the hotels resumed operations.

René Quevedo, an expert on labor issues, said that the increase in unemployment is not only an issue that occurred in Panama, but it was devastating.

“This is serious, especially with what is happening with the Social Security Fund, where all the media and social animosity seems to revolve around private salaried employment, which will continue to contract,” he said.

He added that for every $ 1 in salaries, both public and private), he contributes $ 0.23 to the State (ISLR, CSS and Seguro Educativo). The difference is that the $ 0.23 of the private wage earner comes from economic growth, while in the case of the civil servant the employer is the State, so it is like “taking it out of one pocket to put it in the other.”

PETITION

The president of Arap indicated that they are waiting for the Ministry of Health to announce the relaxation of the curfew until 12 midnight. The request that the owners of the restaurateurs have made is that the curfew go from 12:00 a.m. to 4:00 a.m. to allow them to attend until 11:00 p.m. customers without the need to rush them to consume their food, bring more collaborators to work and give them more time open to obtain better profits.

According to Obaldia, this measure could help to reintegrate more than a thousand workers who still have a suspended contract and, in addition, the economy in the country would be reactivated further.

“With the numbers that the Ministry of Health is giving in contagion and deceased we are putting on our part that it is the most important thing that each one maintains his own safety with his mask, his hand washing, etc etc”, he added.

The activity of restaurants and hotels fell 55.8% during 2020, compared to the same period in 2019, according to a figure from the National Institute of Statistics and Census of the Comptroller General of the Republic.

THEY DO NOT DISCARD THE RETURN OF RESTRICTION MEASURES IN CHIRIQUÍ AFTER THE INCREASE IN COVID-19 CASES

The health authorities have not ruled out the possibility of returning to restrictions such as total quarantine on weekends and extending the curfew, after increases in COVID-19 cases, which have been registered in the province of Chiriquí.

Gladys Novoa, regional director of Health, indicated that, on the part of the Minister of Health, Luis Francisco Sucre, they were warned that, before some indication of an increase in cases, then the restrictive measures will be greater.

This, according to the official, because it is one of the provinces that offers the country the greatest food security, therefore, we must try not to become an unsustainable situation.

To date there is a level of positivity of cases that exceeds 15%, which worries the authorities.

SINOVAC SAYS YOUR VACCINE IS SAFE FOR CHILDREN FROM 3 YEARS OLD

Sinovac says its vaccine is safe for children as young as 3 years old.

Pharmaceutical Sinovac said Tuesday that its COVID-19 vaccine is safe for children ages 3 to 17, according to preliminary data. The firm sent the data to the Chinese drug regulatory agency.

More than 70 million doses of Sinovac vaccine have been distributed in China and other countries.

China has licensed its use in adults, but it has not yet been used in children, because their immune systems may respond differently to the vaccine.

Early and mid-phase trials with more than 550 subjects showed that the vaccine would elicit an immune response, Gang Zeng, Sinovac’s chief medical officer, said at a news conference.

Two of the subjects – one 3-year-old and one 6-year-old had a high fever in response to the vaccine. The rest had moderate symptoms, Zeng said.

“Showing that the vaccine is safe and would produce a potentially helpful immune response against SARS-CoV-2 is something to celebrate a lot,” said Eng Eong Ooi, professor at the Duke NUS School of Medicine in Singapore, who is co-leading the development of another vaccine against COVID-19. However, he noted that the data published by the company was not enough to provide a conclusive answer to the findings.

Children are less likely to become seriously ill from COVID-19, but they are still at risk and can spread the virus. And while vaccination campaigns around the world have focused on adults, ending the pandemic requires immunizing children.

Pfizer’s vaccine is licensed for use from age 16 and is being studied for the 12-16 year age bracket. Moderna is studying its vaccine in children 12 and older and last week announced a new trial for children under 12 years of age.

Sinopharm, a Chinese state company that has two other COVID-19 vaccines, is also investigating the effectiveness of its drugs in children. The firm said in January that it had sent clinical data to authorities, although it was unclear whether it was from one or both of the vaccines it produces.

THOUSANDS OF OLDER ADULTS REFUSED VACCINATION

About 30 thousand people, mostly adults over 60 years old, did not attend their vaccination appointment against covid-19 in circuits 8-6 and 8-8. Health authorities are concerned.

According to field data collected by the Government Innovation Authority (AIG), in the 8-6 circuit that covers San Miguelito, 19% of people with scheduled appointments did not attend to receive their first dose. In 8-8 the situation is more alarming since 31% did not go to be vaccinated.

Engineer Juan Pimiento, advisor to the AIG, pointed out that there was a demand of approximately 56,000 people for each circuit, but at 8-6, 45,600 people attended to be vaccinated. And in 8-8 only 38 thousand attended their vaccination appointment.

It is investigated if the percentage that did not go to be vaccinated is simply not interested in the vaccine or if they had some mobility problem or access to the center assigned to them.

On the subject, the Minister of Health, Luis Francisco Sucre, explained that no one can be forced to get vaccinated.

Those who are still interested in receiving the vaccine from these circuits, can reschedule the appointment by calling 177 or by whatsapp with the Raisa platform. Once they receive the new date, they can attend Rommel Fernández where the express vaccination continues. “To date, some 2,300 people have been vaccinated in these parking lots,” reported Giacomo Tamburelli of the Active 20-30 Club.

To achieve herd immunity and end this pandemic, at least 70% of the vaccinated population is needed, mainly when there is community transmission, reiterated epidemiologist Claude Betts.

For many, going to be vaccinated not only means saving your own life, it also means being in solidarity with the rest of humanity.

HOTELS REPORT FLOW OF RESERVATIONS FOR EASTER WEEK

Most of the hotels in the country are operating between 30% and 50% capacity, due to the low demand that is registered between Monday and Friday.

If you are thinking of taking a break for Easter and doing internal tourism, it is important that you make your reservation as soon as possible.

Preliminary data indicate that Easter will represent an economic injection for Panamanian tourism and hotels, thereby alleviating -in part- the crisis that has affected the sector since March 2020 when the coronavirus pandemic (Covid-19) arrived at the country.

Armando Rodríguez, president of the Panamanian Association of Hotels (Apatel), commented that a significant number of hotels nationwide are receiving large reservations.

He notes that activity has rebounded with the end of the weekend quarantine, but indicates that the recovery will be slow.

“It must be remembered that most hotels in the country are operating between 30% and 40%, because there is no demand to increase the number of rooms. And the demand on weekends does not compensate for the operating expense, “he said.

For his part, Ernesto Orillac, president of the Panama Chamber of Tourism (Camtur), indicates that it is important to activate tourist attractions such as the Panama Canal and Casco Viejo visitor centers.

“The Panama Canal is the main attraction in the capital city for visitors and it is still closed,” Orillac said.

Orillac and Rodríguez point out that it is important to increase the international promotion of the country to attract tourists who are already traveling.

“The United States is reporting an increase in the number of tourists over 60 who are already vaccinated and we must take advantage of that interest,” Orillac explained.

After the lifting of the weekend quarantine, the private sector requests that the curfew that currently applies every day from 10 pm be eliminated, since for companies that participate in tourism the arrival of visitors.

Likewise, they reiterate the call to the Ministry of Health (Minsa) to lift the ban on meetings and congresses, a segment of tourism that is seen as the salvation table of the sector, due to its potential to increase hotel occupancy.

Orillac points out that it is pending that the Minsa announce the number of people that will be allowed in international events.

At the moment, the authorities only allow 25 people to be gathered in the same space, but the aspiration of the sector is that the figure increases in a first stage to 150 people.

MINSA: STUDIES SHOW THAT ASTRAZENECA VACCINE IS WELL TOLERATED AND HIGHLY EFFECTIVE

Panama expects to purchase 1,121,900 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine.

The Ministry of Health (Minsa) shared on Tuesday the results of international studies done on the AstraZeneca vaccine, which in recent days had been under scrutiny for possible side effects.

The Minsa detailed that the vaccine demonstrated 79% efficacy in the prevention of symptomatic covid-19 and 100% efficacy in the prevention of serious illness and hospitalization.

“This safety and efficacy analysis was based on 32,449 participants in 88 centers in the United States, Peru and Chile, accumulating 141 symptomatic cases of covid-19.”

According to the Panamanian health authority, these results add to the growing evidence that shows that this vaccine is well tolerated and highly effective against covid-19, in all adult age groups.

“During the analysis, the Safety Data Surveillance Board conducted a specific review of thrombotic events in the US trial data. The DSMB found no risks of thrombosis or events characterized by thrombosis in the 21,583 participants,” the Minsa reported. .

Days ago, the Minister of Health, Luis Francisco Sucre, said that they were waiting for the results of European organizations to know if the vaccine, in fact, is safe for the Panamanian population.

Panama approved 11.8 million dollars for the acquisition of 1,121,900 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine, authorized through the Covax mechanism.

PANAMA CONTINUES NEGOTIATIONS WITH OTHER PHARMACEUTICAL HOUSES TO ACQUIRE MORE VACCINES

Pfizer vaccines.

Panama is in negotiations with other pharmaceutical companies to purchase more vaccines, according to the Ministry of Health (Minsa).

For the second quarter, the pharmaceutical company Pfizer must deliver weekly more doses of vaccines against COVID-19, to maintain the validity of what was agreed with the National Government, said the head of the portfolio Luis Francisco Sucre this Wednesday morning.

Sucre stressed that Panama is the third country in the area with the best level of vaccination, and mentioned that the health team has exceeded the application of the dose in the time it was thought to do.

According to the Minsa, the minister recalled that the rate of application will depend on factors such as the company’s production, as well as how and when deliveries are made.

Sucre said that the arrival of vaccines through the COVAX mechanism and AstraZeneca’s commitments are being considered for the second quarter. “Our negotiation team is in constant contact, including with other COVID-19 vaccine manufacturers. Proof of this is that this morning they held a meeting with the Russian company that developed Sputnik V, they have also talked with the factory of the doses in China at the moment we have not signed a contract, ”Sucre stressed.

Regarding the application of doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine, he pointed out that according to studies by the European Medicines Agency (EMA), they do not represent any harm to health, so there is nothing to fear.

He explained that according to the EMA it was related to pulmonary thrombosis with this vaccine; however, it was shown to have no link.

The minister indicated that the National Government aspires to have the largest number of vaccines to cover the majority of people in the national territory.

For her part, the Vice Minister of Health Ivette Berrío, mentioned that it has been contemplated to cover the amount of vaccines required by the entire Panamanian population eligible to be vaccinated. “We are pending of the pregnant women and of the progress of the protocols, studies to vaccinate the pediatric population between 10 and 16 years old”, she pointed out.
