How do you feed your soul?; Musical Presentations are Authorized by Minsa; AIG Creates an app for Businesses to Verify People Who Enter; Panama is Preparing for a Third Wave of Covid.

Friday, April 30, 2021

Recently, a friend of mine from high school, “Pevla” proposed a question to her Facebook audience “How do you feed your soul?”.  A seemingly innocent question, unleashed a barrage of distasteful comments.  I think out of 10 responses, only 1 was on point and inspiring.  Eventually, actually that same night, she decided to take down the post.  “Pev” is one of the most beautiful souls you could meet and deserves a proper answer.  So, I pondered, contemplated and studied (which are all words for “I thought about”) the question to my own heart’s content as she also posed this question on my 14th Wedding Anniversary.  Yep, that’s right, the queen has put up with my shit for AT LEAST 14 years now.

(14 years… I don’t know how she does it, but someone needs to give her a medal)

Recently, let’s call them “a good group of guys” showed me that the path to freedom, true freedom, starts with ridding yourself of toxicities and anything that could be deemed as an exorbitant or superfluous lifestyle.  I actually wrote an article about this manner of living in a contest of sorts and to my own amazement, I won first place.  My own understanding about this methodology only made me curious for more knowledge.

We all have toxicity around us.  Somethings are simply unavoidable such as bad traffic, harsh weather, or having to read my fulminated and sometimes ludicrous diatribes.  (My articles are unavoidable due to your own morbid curiosity.). When pressed against the worst, you have a choice to complain about it or make the most of it.  When I mount my silver chariot and the path before me is packed with morons and stupid poopoo heads (ie, I’m driving great distances in bad traffic), I fill my journey with the sweet sounds of jazz and will even get my sweet mother on the phone (hands free) to lighten my otherwise gloomy thoroughfare.

So the path to freedom starts with recognizing the negativity in life and eliminating it.  If your psychological focus is set on how something upsets you or how someone mistreats you, THAT needs to go.  It may not be easy, but it is just that simple.  Take your clutter and discard the unnecessary items, those things of no value to anyone and just get rid of it.  Sell those redundant items or things that you haven’t used in ages, nor will you ever use.  Review your budget and shed the frivolous expenditures; learn to be frugal.  Donate your old clothes; you know, the clothes that someday you’ll be able to fit into once you lose 50 lbs… …yeah those.  It’s not that you’re not going to lose the weight, but once you do, you’ll want to but new clothes anyways.

Simplicity brings tranquility.

The next step to freedom and harmony is the proverbial filling of your soul.  Here are 10 things that I tend to do, to fill my soul.  Some are enlightening, some cheesy and some… …fishy. Here you go Pevla – here’s my list!

  1. 7AM – coffee with my wife and the birds.  We always have fruit available.  Half is for us and the other half is for the birds to feed on.  And we name them.  “He honey, Bob’s back and it looks like he would have preferred bananas over papaya.”
  2. While working at home, at any point of the day where stress has taken over, a quick break to walk barefoot into the grass in our backyard (avoiding the fuzzy puppy bombs) is a great way to reconnect with nature and ground myself.
  3. Gardening with the boys.  They hate it.  It doesn’t fill their soul.  But when we’re done, after just 2 hours of intense slave labor, we reward ourselves of a job well done by sharing a beverage together in the shade and talking about whatever has been on their brilliant minds.
  4. Playing 80s music at a softer, manageable volume to be able to sit and even have a conversation if anyone was around to converse.
  5. A new, never before touched by our palates, bottle of red wine, soft pairable cheeses and silence.
  6. The rain.  Was that cheesier than number 5?  Even when I’m fishing, I hope for a little rain.  Panama rain is especially warm, with thick, heavy drops that caress and expose the soul.
  7. Oh, and fishing.  Nothing too sporty or strenuous, fishing in a lake or stream brings peace and nature to the core of my soul.
  8. Answer questions that my daughter or boys may have.  The whole process is fulfilling.  I’ll watch as Brandon approaches with his, “need to ask Dad swagger”.  I’ll stop whatever I’m doing, turn off any music and absorb the very essence of the moment.
  9. I read.  Anything.  Great authors like Kurt Vonnegut, Stephen King, Dr Suess, anything.  Self-help books are great too.
  10. I write.  As if that wasn’t obvious.  Sometimes it’s tedious, but when I have the time, like now, I absolutely love it.

TOP NEWS and TIDBITS:

Yoli’s Wisdom

People will likely need a third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and yearly reminders – similar to how it works with seasonal flu – the scientist behind the vaccine Pfizer and BioNTech said Wednesday.

BioNTech’s chief medical officer, Dr. Özlem Türeci, told CNBC that immunity to the virus will decrease over time.

“We see this decrease in immune responses also in people who were recently infected and therefore this is to be expected with vaccines as well,” Türeci told CNBC’s Kelly Evans on The Exchange.

The doctor’s statements echo what Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla said earlier this month. He explained that a booster shot of the vaccine would be needed in a year, which would mean next December for those who got it early.

Researchers are not sure how long immunity to COVID-19 lasts after receiving the vaccine, although data from Pfizer and Moderna have shown their injections to be highly effective six months later. But it remains to be seen how vaccines work from that time on.

Pfizer, BioNTech, and Moderna have launched trials to study the effectiveness and safety of the boosters, in hopes of testing the vaccine’s effectiveness against variants of the virus.

The vaccines already approved for use in Europe have recently been joined by the Johnson & Johnson candidate, which will begin to be distributed in Spain after its administration was delayed due to the risk of thrombi.

The injection will begin to be used in the age range of 70 to 79 years, after obtaining the approval of the European Medicines Agency (EMA, for its acronym in English). At the moment it is not clear if it will also be used in people under 60 years of age.

MINSA AUTHORIZES THE PRESENTATION OF MUSICAL GROUPS, BUT WITHOUT DANCING ACTIVITIES

The musicians will be able to return to their creative activity.

The Minister of Health, Luis Francisco Sucre, reported this Tuesday that starting next week the presentation of musical groups and orchestras will be allowed.

According to the head of the Ministry of Health (Minsa), the groups should be made up of no more than six musicians.

“The positivity has remained below 5% and this allows us to authorize musical groups and orchestras to perform in places such as restaurants, open-air bars or other similar facilities, always respecting the 25% capacity,” Sucre said in the conference this afternoon.

The high official stressed that, despite this flexibility, dance activities are still prohibited.

On the other hand, the doctor pointed out that from May 3RD on, all travelers from India or who have visited that Asian country in the last 15 days, measures will be applied for their entry.

Sucre brought this to the attention of the general public, because according to the information they have received, most of the new cases are for violating the physical distancing protocols.

“We have seen how activities have been carried out in which physical distancing is violated. The positive ones are due to social activities, and parties with family and friends,” he explained.

The minister stressed that vaccinations are progressing at a good pace in the country, but called for caution in order to not to have the critical situation experienced by other countries in the region.

“The serious situation that many countries in Latin America are going through, Panama is not going through. Therefore, it is essential that we maintain discipline. Although the process is progressing at a good pace, we have not won the battle against covid-19,” he pointed out.

The Mitradel carries out constant operations in companies.

Carlos Landero, director of the Labor Inspection Directorate of the Ministry of Labor of Panama (Mitradel), pointed out that they have discovered companies that are hiring their workers under professional services and foreigners, who without work permits are occupying the positions that were suspended.

“At this moment, we detect 45 companies that are recurrently hiring workers in this regard and 60 companies that have workers who do not have the corresponding work permits that are foreigners who are occupying the positions of people who are suspended,” Landero explained to RPC.

PANAMA VACCINES PORTFOLIO CONTEMPLES 9.2 MILLION DOSES AGAINST COVID-19

Of the 9.2 million vaccines against COVID-19 in the Panamanian portfolio, 7 are from Pfizer, 1.1 million from AstraZeneca, and 1.1 million from the Covax mechanism.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Panama, Erika Mouynes, reported that the Panamanian portfolio of vaccines against COVID-19 is consolidated with 9.2 million doses “with extraordinary results and enough for everyone.”

Of the total vaccines, 7 million are from the pharmaceutical company Pfizer-BioNtech, 1.1 million from AstraZeneca, and 1.1 million from the Covax mechanism.

At a press conference, Mouynes provided a report on the progress in the agreements with the pharmaceutical houses of the vaccines against the coronavirus, detailing that in the first quarter it was “scheduled that 450 thousand doses would arrive in Panama and they arrived as they had been planned. In the second quarter, we expect to receive 1 million doses of vaccines.”

She pointed out that for the third quarter of this year, 2021, about 5 million doses are expected to be received.

The Panamanian Foreign Minister added that “from the beginning of this year until September, Panama will have received 6.5 million vaccines, however, the specific details of the quantities of shipments and which pharmaceutical company corresponds to it at that time, will be reported by the Minsa (Ministry of Health) in a timely manner.”

PANAMA REVIEWS JOHNSON & JOHNSON VACCINE FILE FOR POSSIBLE EMERGENCY USE

Panama has already advanced conversations with the pharmaceutical company.

Health authorities are reviewing the Johnson & Johnson pharmaceuticals’ Covid-19 vaccine file for possible approval of its emergency use.

This was confirmed this Tuesday, April 27TH, by the National Director of Pharmacy and Drugs of the Ministry of Health (Minsa), Elvia Lau.

“We are reviewing the extensive file,” Lau said.

Panama has already approved the emergency use against the virus of vaccines from four other laboratories: Pfizer, AstraZeneca, Sputnik V and Coronovac. From this group, doses of Pfizer and AstraZeneca are currently being used.

Last Friday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States recommended continuing to apply this pharmaceutical product, after its temporary suspension due to reports of blood clot reactions in some people.

Although the emergency use of Johnson & Johnson vaccines has not yet been approved by Farmacia y Drogas, Panama has already started conversations with representatives of the laboratory for the acquisition of the product.

However, yesterday the Deputy Minister of Health, Ivette Berrío, said that, with this pharmaceutical company, as with the Russian Sputnik V and the Chinese CoronaVac, no agreement has been reached.

Initially, the authorities had announced that they were managing to acquire some 300,000 doses of Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine, which only requires one application, but this has not been confirmed.

PHARMACEUTICALS DO NOT SELL COVID-19 VACCINES TO COMPANIES

In Panama, only four vaccines have been endorsed by the Ministry of Pharmacy and Drugs: Pfizer / BioNTech, AstraZeneca / Oxford University, CoronaVac and Sputnik V, but only two are administered to the population, until now.

Pfizer, AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson, three of the large pharmaceutical companies that manufacture the vaccine against the Covid-19 disease, confirmed to La Prensa that they do not plan to distribute their biologicals through private channels in the short term.

The pharmaceutical companies agreed that they are prioritizing the doses available for the supply agreements concluded with national governments and supranational organizations such as the Covax mechanism of the World Health Organization, in order to ensure equity in access to vaccines during this stage of the global emergency.

Last week, the Head of Health, Luis Francisco Sucre, pointed out that a private company could buy vaccines against Covid-19 as long as they comply with a series of requirements, among them, the registration and approval of the Directorate of Pharmacy and Drugs of the country.

COVID-19 VACCINES DO NOT HAVE A MARKETING LICENSE

The purchase of vaccines against Covid-19 by private companies will not be possible at this time, because the large pharmaceutical companies haven’t planned for this alternative in the short term and their biologicals do not have a marketing license either; just an authorization for emergency use.

Pfizer, AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson, three of the big pharmaceutical manufacturers of the Covid-19 vaccine, reported that they will not distribute these through private companies.

The priority continues to be to provide doses to governments and mechanisms such as Covax, clarified Roberto Dormond, director of Public Affairs for Pfizer Central America and the Caribbean.

“In the current emergency context due to the pandemic, the sale of the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine against Covid-19 through private channels is not planned,” confirmed Dormond.

In that sense, he specified that pharmaceutical companies are prioritizing the doses they have available for the supply agreements concluded with governments and supranational organizations, such as the aforementioned Covax mechanism, and will provide these doses in accordance with the designated distribution channels and vaccination sites, subject to the authorization or regulatory approval of each nation.

With Pfizer, Panama agreed to purchase 7 million doses, which are assigned to the national vaccination plan by circuits and phases as they arrive in the country.

For his part, Gustavo Guillén, Director of Government Affairs and Communication of AstraZeneca for Central America and the Caribbean, indicated that at this time the priority is to comply with the agreements of the Covax mechanism and with governments, including Panama.

He added that these agreements have exhausted current manufacturing capacity in the region and that there is currently no supply, sale or distribution of the vaccine in the private sector.

With the AstraZeneca / Oxford University alliance, Panama agreed to the bilateral purchase of one million 92 thousand doses, and will also receive vaccines through the Covax mechanism.

In fact, on April 16th, the first batch of 36,000 doses of the AstraZeneca / Oxford University vaccine arrived in the country, which are being applied to men over 30 years old and women over 50 years old.

Meanwhile, the pharmaceutical company Johnson & Johnson reported that in the midst of the emergency situation, the priority is focused on responding to the needs of the nations, and that the volumes of vaccine produced during this phase of the pandemic will be used solely for that purpose, with the premise of promoting broad, equitable and timely access to its “health solutions.”

In addition, he said that they support the different national vaccination plans and programs to contain the virus from a global and comprehensive approach.

LICENSE AND RISKS

Xavier Sáez-Llorens, clinical researcher and member of the Panama Covid-19 Vaccine Research Consortium, confirmed that, in effect, so far no vaccine against Covid-19 has a commercial license, but an authorization for emergency use

For Sáez-Llorens, the participation of third parties in the importation of vaccines poses risks of smuggling, counterfeiting, trading and social inequity. “I prefer that a ministerial body regulate the entry of vaccines and use the private sector to improve logistics and vaccination rate to promote the economic and tourist reactivation of the country,” he said.

Ivonne Torres Atencio, director of Pharmacology of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Panama, emphasized that Law No. 1 of January 2001 on drugs and other products for human health is very clear (Article 25): to commercialize vaccines you must have a sales certificate issued in the country of origin, but none of the vaccines has a marketing authorization.

In her opinion, it is essential to avoid situations such as those registered in other countries, where there have been attempts to copy and falsify vaccines such as Pfizer’s.

In this sense, the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) has issued six health alerts in Mexico for the sale of supposed bilogicals of Pfizer, AstraZeneca, CanSino and Moderna. The Cofepris discovered an apocryphal Pfizer website, in which supposed doses of its vaccine against Covid-19 were marketed.

In Panama, the Department of Pharmacy and Drugs of the Minsa recently clarified that the private sector cannot commercialize vaccines against Covid-19.

Elvia Lau, Director of Pharmacy and Drugs, reaffirmed that one of the requirements to market any drug is the “free sale certificate” and that none of the vaccines against Covid-19 have it yet.

“It is necessary to clarify that the available vaccines only have authorizations for emergency use in their countries of origin, which will not allow them to present requirements such as the certificate of free sale, among others,” the official explained.

ASTRAZENECA COVID-19 VACCINE BENEFITS INCREASE WITH AGE

European regulator says AstraZeneca’s vaccine benefits outweigh risks.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) said on Friday that a review it carried out of the AstraZeneca vaccine against covid-19 shows that it increases its benefits with age and that these outweigh the risks despite the rare cases of blood clots.

The European Commission had asked the EMA to carry out a new study on the vaccine developed by the Anglo-Swedish laboratory, after the concerns of several European countries that decided to limit its use to people older than 60 or 65 years as a result of detection of cases of blood clots in younger vaccinated people.

The study “shows that the benefits of vaccination increase with age” and that they “outweigh the risks,” the European regulator said in a statement.

“The benefits of Vaxzevria [the name of the AstraZeneca vaccine] outweigh all risks in adults of all age ranges”, the EMA added.

Medical authorities in different countries suspect that AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson’s covid-19 injectables, based on the same technology, cause a rare type of blood clot.

“Vaxzevria is effective in preventing hospitalizations, admissions to intensive care units and deaths due to covid-19,” defended the European regulator.

“The most common side effects are generally mild or moderate and heal in a few days,” he said.

Medical authorities in different countries suspect that AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson’s covid-19 injectables, based on the same technology, cause a rare type of blood clot.

According to the EMA, 287 cases of clots were registered in the world, 142 of them in the European Economic Area (European Union, Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein), among the millions of people who received the vaccine from the Anglo-Swedish laboratory.

With the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine, 25 clots were produced, 8 with Johnson & Johnson’s and 5 with Moderna’s, according to data released Tuesday by the European regulator.

The EMA recently announced that the problem had to be registered as a “very rare” side effect in the AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson vaccines.

PFIZER ANNOUNCES IT MAY HAVE A CORONAVIRUS PILL BY THE END OF THE YEAR

Pfizer Pharmaceutical.

Following the latest trials by the US pharmaceutical Pfizer, the company has announced that it could have a drug available before the end of the year that is administered orally against the coronavirus.

The multinational has explained through a statement that its new drug, called PF-07321332, has been shown in in vitro studies to be a “powerful protease inhibitor with antiviral activity against Sars-Cov-2” and other coronaviruses, which suggests its “potential” for the treatment of Covid-19 and other “threats”.

The treatment is similar to that used today against the HIV virus. It would be administered in the early stages of infection and would be the first alternative to the vaccine to avoid the development of more serious symptoms.

“We designed PF-07321332 as a potential oral therapy that could be prescribed at the first sign of infection, without requiring patients to be hospitalized or in critical care,” said Mikael Dolsten, Pfizer’s Chief Scientific Officer and President of Research, in an official statement.

The first phase of the trial, in which people between the ages of 18 and 60 participate, is scheduled to end on May 25th. The entire experiment will last 145 days plus another 28 days of screening and dosing.”

THE VACCINATION PROCESS IN CHILDREN COULD BE CARRIED OUT AFTER SEPTEMBER, SAYS MINISTER SUCRE

Luis Francisco Sucre, Minister of Health.

At this time, Panama has the necessary doses to cover the “vaccinable” population against Covid-19, reported the Head of Health, Luis Francisco Sucre.

However, the official announced that there is the possibility that later children that are 12 years old could be vaccinated.

This could be after the month of September, Sucre said, this Thursday, April 22, 2021, when he was visiting the Rommel Fernández autoexpress, where the doses began to be applied to volunteers with the AstraZeneca vaccine.

END NOTES:

POEMS ABOUT THE SOUL:

Walt Whitman, ‘The Imprisoned Soul’.

At the last, tenderly,
From the walls of the powerful, fortress’d house,
From the clasp of the knitted locks—from the keep of the well-closed doors,
Let me be wafted.

Let me glide noiselessly forth;
With the key of softness unlock the locks—with a whisper
Set ope the doors, O soul!

This poem by the American pioneer of free verse, Walt Whitman (1819-92), sees the poet calling upon his soul to free itself from its constraints of ‘the powerful, fortress’d house’ of the poet’s body.

(Hey, Wisconsinites, someone actually used “Ope” in a peom!)

A. E. Housman, ‘Be still, my soul, be still; the arms you bear are brittle’.

Be still, my soul, be still; the arms you bear are brittle,
Earth and high heaven are fixt of old and founded strong.
Think rather,—call to thought, if now you grieve a little,
The days when we had rest, O soul, for they were long …

 A. E. Housman (1859-1936) stopped believing in the existence of the soul when he was a teenager, but he saw the symbolic significance of the ‘soul’ nevertheless, as this fine poem demonstrates.

W. B. Yeats, ‘A Dialogue of Self and Soul’.

My Soul. I summon to the winding ancient stair;
Set all your mind upon the steep ascent,
Upon the broken, crumbling battlement,
Upon the breathless starlit air,
Upon the star that marks the hidden pole;
Fix every wandering thought upon
That quarter where all thought is done:
Who can distinguish darkness from the soul?

Another ‘dialogue’ poem about the soul, but this time – by way of conclusion of this pick of the best poems about souls – Yeats (1865-1939) gives us the selfin dialogue with the soul, with the latter calling upon the former to transcend the mortal world and live on after death.

Stay safe… Stay healthy

And remember to Feed your soul.
