You, yes you, are a badass. Individually and collectively speaking you’ve been through more than most could possibly bear. Where I agree that the greatest generation was before mine, “ours” wasn’t that bad either. Given the average age of my readers, all but a few of you have grown up in the shadow of the Cold War with the Soviet Union, nuclear fears since “forever”, ridiculous inflation, the largest bear market since the crash of 1929, terrorist attacks both foreign and domestic, the stress of fake news from all angles and now a pandemic that has ripped us apart not only because of the health reasons it caused, but because of the array of opinions on how it should be mitigated as well as how you’ve been treated by those who simply think differently.  This is the hand you’ve been dealt and you’ve made it this far, head high and kicking ass.

I, however, got sick from getting rained on, barefoot in my backyard on a Friday afternoon. How whimpy is that?!?!  Well, then I fell in a lake Saturday morning which probably aggravated an already delicate immune system. (Insert ridiculous face palm.).  I don’t get sick. I don’t get the sniffles. I’m a part if this baddass generation, so how was this possible?  Being sick sucks, but the worst part about it is the confusion on what to do when you do get sick. With the COVID scare, my first thought was “So, this is how it ends?”, like an over exaggerated Victorian melodramatic hero. So, after a few days of mulling it over, I got tested, only to see that I did not have COVID.  Well, wait a minute, what about all of those “what happened to the flu” conspiracy theory posts?  Am I suddenly the exception?  Is it possible for someone to get sick nowadays and it NOT be COVID?  Apparently so…

And then, this morning, Queen Sayira fell ill with even worse symptoms that what I had.  Given that her health insurance is even better than mine, she got checked out and low and behold, she has the flu – which essentially means that I also had the flu.  As much as I’d like to believe that I’m unique, I’m pretty sure that this happens more often than what’s reported.  Person gets sick, person gets a COVID test, test comes up negative, person goes home dumbfounded.

What I’ve learned from this is that I need to change the way we think about how to proceed if you get the sniffles, headaches, body aches, or whatever.  First, we can’t assume that it’s anything in particular.  We can just think it’s COVID and we can’t just think that it isn’t COVID.  The government is quick to make us run for a COVID test if we get a fever, but is that the best thing to do?  With so much misinformation, I think we need to just get back to basics.  Right now, our friend who most of us met via El Valle, Jon Owens, is up in Mexico and the last news we had was that he is in a comma and on a ventilator presumably due to COVID.  For those who know Jon, he’s always been a pilar of health in my eyes, always eating right to the point of growing his own super-veggies.  I wish him well, but can only imagine how he went from “super hero healthy” to where he’s at now.  For those of you who pray, a few prayers for him right now wouldn’t hurt.

And, if you get sick, go to the clinic and don’t leave until someone tells you what you have.  Don’t just conform to the, “well, you don’t have COVID” rhetoric.

Pulmonary recovery exercises after having Covid.

Specialists from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) developed a series of respiratory exercises that help improve the lung capacity of people who had Covid-19, a disease that among its main characteristics is damage to the lungs, which it could remain as one of the main sequelae left by this virus.

In this sense, Ana Karen Centeno, a specialist in cardiorespiratory physiotherapy, points out that one of the most affective ways to combat the respiratory sequelae of people who have overcome the coronavirus is through pulmonary therapy, with which people can improve certain capacities that were diminished by the disease, such as exercise tolerance, fatigue, as well as a better feeling of taking in air when they do their daily activities.

Exercises to improve lung function Rib breathing This type of exercise is aimed at helping the mobility of the rib cage and the displacement of secretions, thus improving people’s respiratory capacity. To do them, all you need to do is sit or lie down on a flat, comfortable surface and take deep, but slow, breaths. This exercise is carried out according to the individual capacity of each person, however, care must be taken that it is inhaled through the nose and exhaled through the mouth.

On the recommendation of the UNAM experts, you should do 10 sets in the morning and 10 at night. Diaphragmatic breathing As the name implies, lung recovery exercises of this type are focused on the diaphragm, so it is recommended to be seated, no matter if it is a chair or on the edge of your bed when you get up. This routine will help you release your diaphragm and efficiently control your rib cage.

Take air through your nose, but use your diaphragm to do so. Aim for slow, deep breaths, and always exhale through your mouth. It is worth mentioning that postcovid lung recovery exercises are a complementary tool to alleviate the consequences of the coronavirus, which means that they do not replace the medications or physiotherapies that the doctor may recommend. In that sense, do not suspend any treatment, as it could be counterproductive. In this case it is only recommended to incorporate these exercises to accelerate the recovery of your lungs.

The Minister of Health, Luis Sucre, announced the new measure.

The Minister of Health, Luis Francisco Sucre, reported this Tuesday, September 14, that as of Monday, September 20, the curfew will be lifted in the provinces of Bocas del Toro and Darién and in the regions Guna Yala and Ngäbe Buglé, decreed to combat the Covid-19 pandemic.

He said that in Boquerón and Gualaca, in Chiriquí, they will also be free of mobility restrictions, but in the other districts of that province the current regulations are maintained.

While in Atalaya, Calobre, Cañazas, La Mesa and San Francisco, in the province of Veraguas, the curfew will also be eliminated, thanks to the indicators presented in recent weeks. The other districts continue with the restrictive measures already established.

The mobility restriction measure will also be eliminated in Olá (Coclé) and in Pinogana (Darién), the minister said.

In the province of Herrera it will rise in the districts of Parita, Pesé, Las Minas and Santa María; while in Los Santos Pedasí and Tonosí will be left without a curfew.

Epidemiological indicators make it possible to eliminate the curfew in Changuinola, Bocas del Toro province, Sucre said.

In the Guna Yala region, the townships of Aligandí, Armila and Narganá will be free from the mobility restriction.

The Health Minister added that the current measures are maintained for Colón, Panama Metro, Panama East, Panama North, San Miguelito and Panama West, where the curfew is from 1:00 in the morning to 4:00 in the morning. Shops must close at midnight.

Sucre said that despite the good numbers presented by the capital city, surveillance, traceability and operations will be strengthened in the townships of Don Bosco, Bella Vista, San Francisco, Santa Ana and Juan Díaz, in the Metropolitan Health Region.

VARIANT DELTA GAINS LAND; MU IS THE DOMINANT IN PANAMA

For now, variant B.1.621 of the SARS-CoV-2 virus (of Colombian origin) is the one that predominates in the cases sequenced by the Gorgas Institute in recent days.

The circulation of the Delta variant (B.1.617.2) of the SARS-CoV-2 virus begins to increase, since 20% of the cases sequenced last August by scientists from the Gorgas Memorial Institute for Health Studies (Icges ) correspond to this lineage that emerged at the end of last year in India.

The data shows that the Delta variant in July represented 6.7% of the cases sequenced by scientists from the Department of Research in Genomics and Proteomics of Icges.

It is imminent. After being identified in May by genomic sequencing, the lineage of concern Delta will have a predominant circulation in Panama, as has happened in other countries, warn Panamanian scientists.

The Delta lineage is considered “of concern” by the World Health Organization, because its transmission is 100 times higher than the original variant, it has a greater capacity to replicate and its viral load is a thousand times higher than the original lineage.

The director of the Gorgas Institute, Juan Miguel Pascale, indicated that the presence of the Delta variant in the country is gradually increasing.

He added that since June the Mu variant (B.1.621) that emerged in Colombia last January became the predominant variant in the country, and even continued until last August.

The scientist stated that March became the month where the most variants were detected in the country, among which he mentioned: Gamma (P.1 from Brazil), Alfa (B.1.1.7 from the United Kingdom), Lambda (C.37 of Peru) and Mu.

The Mu variant, one of the most recent of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, has spread to 42 countries, but early studies suggest that it is transmitted less easily than the Delta, which in recent months has triggered a resurgence of the pandemic in the United States and other countries.

The advisers of the Covid-19 Panama Vaccine Research Consortium estimated on August 16 that the Delta lineage will displace the Mu and several other predominant ones within a period of between 6 and 8 weeks.

Arturo Rebollón, epidemiologist and public health specialist, said that the low transmission of the virus at this time is a factor that is slowing down infections with the Delta variant. The average number of cases per day is 300.

Other factors that are influencing its containment are the high coverage of vaccination against Covid-19, gauges and the use of the mask both indoors and outdoors.

Panama is the Central American country that performs the most genomic sequencing of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, and one of the most sequential when compared to South American countries. So far, scientists from the Gorgas Institute have 2,212 sequenced cases of the virus that transmits the Covid-19 disease.

PANAMA IS THE FIRST COUNTRY IN THE REGION WITH A COVID CERTIFICATE APPROVED BY THE EUROPEAN UNION

Illustrative photo of the EU covid certificate.

Foreign Minister Erika Mouynes reported on her Twitter account that the “Panama covid certificate” was accepted by the European Union (EU) for travel.

The announcement was made on the morning of this Wednesday, September 15, ensuring that Panama, in this way, becomes the first country in the region with a COVID-19 certificate approved by the European Union.

She stressed that this is the result of the work between the Foreign Ministry, the Government Innovation Authority and the Ministry of Health (Minsa) to guarantee the mobility and safe travel of citizens.

For its part, the Minsa explained that this certificate can be used in the 27 member states of the EU, allowing Panamanians to travel faster and easier.

Since last July 1, 2021, the use of the digital COVID-19 certificate came into force for all citizens and residents of the EU that certifies, among other things, that people are vaccinated against the deadly virus.

MODERN DEFENDS BOOSTER DOSE WITH MORE DATA ON LOSS OF EFFECTIVENESS

Moderna also contributed new studies on the efficacy of its vaccine, which suggest that it continues to work well, also in the face of the delta variant.

The American pharmaceutical company Moderna defended the use of booster doses of its COVID-19 vaccine on Wednesday, based on new data on the apparent decrease in its effectiveness over time.

The company released details of a study in which it compares the cases of coronavirus registered between participants in its clinical trials, who were vaccinated between July and October 2020, and people who were vaccinated between December 2020 and March of this year, when the product had already received authorization for emergency use.

According to Moderna, the number of COVID-19 cases is clearly higher in the first group, which would point to a progressive decrease in immunity provided by the vaccine over time.

In a statement, the CEO of the firm, Stéphane Bancel, said that these conclusions “support the need for reinforcements to maintain high levels of protection.”

“We hope these findings will be helpful as health authorities and regulators continue to analyze strategies to end this pandemic,” Bancel said.

Both Moderna and Pfizer, the two companies with messenger RNA vaccines, have recently submitted data to US authorities to defend a third dose.

So far, booster doses are being used for people with a weakened immune system, while there is no decision on their use in the general population.

In the note published today, Moderna also contributed new studies on the efficacy of its vaccine, which suggest that it continues to work well, also against the delta variant.

The analysis compared more than 350,000 people vaccinated with this product with a similar number of unvaccinated and showed an effectiveness of 87% before the diagnosis with covid-19 and 96% at the time of preventing hospitalization.

The study, which has not yet been reviewed by independent bodies, was already carried out with a significant presence of the delta variant, which was detected in 47% of the cases registered among those vaccinated, according to Moderna.

A TOTAL OF 7 VARIANTS OF COVID-19 HAVE BEEN DETECTED BY GENOMIC TRACEABILITY IN PANAMA

Swab Day.

The Panamanian variants A 2.5, Beta, Gamma, Alpha, Lambda, Delta and Miu, have been detected by genomic traceability in Panama.

The director of the Gorgas Commemorative Institute for Health Studies, Juan Miguel Pascale, stated at a Minsa conference that so far they have 2,212 sequenced cases of the Covid-19 virus and until December, the Panamanian variant A 2.5 was the predominant .

As of January of this year, Pascale said, imported cases of the Beta variant were detected, originating from South Africa. March is the month where the most variants were detected: Gamma, Alpha, Lambda and Miu.

For the month of May Delta was detected and in June Miu becomes the predominant variant in the country. As of August, Miu is still predominant, but Delta is still in 20% of all virus sequences, Pascale said.

The director of Gorgas expressed that on the website of the institution in charge of him and that of Minsa, information on the circulation of Covid-19 variants will be published in a specified period of time.

THE GENERAL POPULATION DOES NOT NEED THE THIRD DOSE, ACCORDING TO TWO FDA EXPERTS

The review comes at a time when most countries with large vaccine stocks are debating whether to administer booster doses.

Covid-19 vaccines work so well that most people don’t need a booster yet, a group of scientists from around the world said in a review that will likely fuel debate over their use.

The authors, including two leading experts from the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), say in The Lancet medical journal that governments would better focus on immunizing the not vaccinated and would wait for more data on which boosters, and in what doses, would be most effective.

They based their assessment on a wide range of real-world observational studies, as well as data from clinical trials prior to the approval of the vaccines.

“None of the studies have provided credible evidence of substantially less protection against severe disease,” the authors wrote. There could also be additional side effect risks if boosters are introduced too early or too widely, they said.

The review comes at a time when most countries with large vaccine stocks are debating whether to administer booster doses to boost immunity and help stop the spread of the more infectious delta variant. The United States plans to begin administering booster vaccines on September 20, although the plan has yet to be approved by the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Among the scientists behind the findings are Marion Gruber, who heads the FDA’s Office of Vaccine Research and Review, and her deputy Philip Krause. Both have said that they will leave their post at the end of this year. Gruber and Krause were part of a group of FDA officials who last year opposed pressure from the Trump Administration to speed up the authorization of covid vaccines, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Soumya Swaminathan, Ana-María Henao-Restrepo, and Mike Ryan from the World Health Organization (WHO) also worked on the review. The WHO has opposed the widespread use of booster vaccines, stating that it would make more sense from a public health point of view to focus on immunizing those who have not yet received any vaccines, either because of anti-vaccine sentiment in countries. with large reserves or because they live in places with little access to vaccines.

“Even if the booster were eventually shown to lower the risk of severe disease in the medium term, current vaccine supplies could save more lives if used in previously unvaccinated populations,” the authors wrote.

MINSA ANNOUNCES INCREASE IN CHURCHES

The Minister of Health of Panama, Luis Sucre announced that as of September 20, the capacity in churches will be increased and the curfew will be totally eliminated in several districts of the country.

Sucre explained that after coordinating actions, churches, temples, parishes, chapels and centers of worship will allow the capacity of 50% of the general population not vaccinated and a capacity of 80% of the population with a complete vaccination scheme against covid-19.

“This will depend on the facilities and the organization that carries out each facility,” said the health minister.

He asked the churches to prepare their internal health committees to be vigilant about the fulfillment of the measures and the gauges.

He reiterated that mass activities involving crowds in public places are not allowed.

LAURENTINO CORTIZO SANCTIONS LAW THAT HARDENS THE FINE FOR HIRING FOREIGNERS WITHOUT WORK PERMIT

Bill # 185 was approved by President Laurentino Cortizo.

The President of the Republic, Laurentino Cortizo, sanctioned bill 185 on Wednesday afternoon, which toughens the fine for hiring foreigners without work permits.

Bill 185, which creates the coercive jurisdiction of the Ministry of Labor and Labor Development (Mitradel), increases the fine for recidivism in hiring foreign workers without the corresponding authorization.

In addition, this standard provides tools to the Labor Inspection Directorate for the collection of the Health, Safety and Hygiene at Work Fund.

The regulation, presented by the Minister of Labor and Labor Development, Doris Zapata, grants the power to enforce the collection of penalties arising from the violation of labor laws.

It is established that companies that for the third time incur in hiring foreign labor without the permits required by the Mitradel, will pay a fine of 15 thousand dollars.

The regulation also decrees the obligation to pay the Occupational Safety Fund by companies whose violation may lead to the closure of operations.

Portela and Zapata highlight their persistence in obtaining their medals

The Mitradel will be able to collect the fines and make them effective through an executing judge, protecting the national workforce and guaranteeing the human rights of the workers.

According to the government entity, this law seeks to sanction companies that continue to hire foreign labor without the necessary work permits, effectively unprotecting this population, by subjecting them to working conditions that imply uncertainty, exploitation and ignorance of their rights, and that, in addition, generate distortions in the labor market, affecting the perception and behavior of the population.

LAW THAT EXPANDS THE SCOPE OF MATERNAL JURISDICTION UP TO THE FATHER

The extension of the maternal jurisdiction to the father applies to cases in which the pregnant woman does not have a formal job.

The president of Panama, Laurentino Cortizo, sanctioned the law that extends the scope of the maternal jurisdiction to the father.

“When the pregnant woman does not have a formal job, the father will enjoy the scope of the jurisdiction and may not be fired from his public or private job for the months that the gestation lasts, and after delivery, for a term of one year, except in special cases ”, establishes the new law.

The new legislation also grants 15 days of anticipated vacation to the father in the event of the death of the mother, after complying with the mourning established by law.

To be entitled to this extension of the maternity jurisdiction, the father must present the child’s birth certificate that certifies him as the father of the minor, among other documents.

This norm was born through Bill 548, which was approved in the third debate by the Plenary of the National Assembly last April.
