Friday, October 21, 2022

It’s not until I have to find some obscure ingredient for one of the Queen’s famous smoothies, do I notice the staggeringly low resolution quality of my vision. (Me, dialing the wife…)  “Honey, I don’t see some of the things on your list here at the store.  Are you sure Riba Smith sells Ashwagandha?”, I asked just as I feel the anxiety boiling within.  “Yep, it’s there.”, she responds in what appears to be an effort to challenge me.  Which she does often.  “Snookems, where within the belly of this beast would I find said medicinal herb, hhhmmm?”  I can hear her as she sighs, “Look, you said that you wanted to help, but this isn’t helping.  Do what I do and walk up and down the isles to no end until…. wah wah blah blah ajghsah sjdhl ajhuen ahdash…..” and that’s about the time that my hearing goes out too.

Shopping for food is fun, but only when it’s for my culinary creations.  Organizing massive meals for family a friends gets me downright giddy with excitement.  Like a kid in a candy store, I’ll gleefully survey the multitude of ingredients as I gauge the peculiarities of every… Single… Component… “Hey, are you even listening to me?!?!”, the lioness roars.  “yes dear… … you said you need oil too…”, I shyly respond extremely doubting my subconsious.  “Yes, but which KIND of oil?”, she challenges me again. “Oh hell, I don’t know, the oily kind, I suppose!”, I knew I was in trouble.  “I’ll give you the oily kind alright, I said that I need Black Seed Oil!  See, that’s why I should just do the shopping on my own.  Every time wah wah wah, blah blah, aldusaiu, alsudflusd”, aaaand my auditory perception is skewed again!!  I’ll get her some cinnamon and flax seed oil for sure.  I wonder if she’ll notice.  LOL

AFTER TWO YEARS OF PANDEMIC, HUNDREDS OF DEVOTEES ARRIVE IN PORTOBELO TO HONOR THE BLACK CHRIST

Black Christ of Portobelo.

This Friday, October 21, 2022, after two years of pandemic and virtuality, hundreds of devotees from different sectors of the country move to Portobelo to honor the Black Christ.

The parishioners, many of whom began their pilgrimage several days ago, come to the place dressed in the purple tunic similar to the one worn by the Christ, in gratitude for the favors granted.

Some devotees give offerings and others put their needs in prayer.

It is expected that later the Eucharistic celebration and the traditional procession will take place.

This celebration, which usually brings together thousands of devotees, generates important economic income for the province of Colón, which in recent weeks has denounced great losses due to the constant floods in the province.

There are many versions about the arrival of the Black Christ of Portobelo, one of them tells that in Taboga the petition was made to Spain of Jesus of Nazareno, while in Portobelo they asked the same person for the image of San Pedro. There was a mistake when sending the images leaving the Nazarene in Portobelo and San Pedro in Taboga and when trying to exchange them, something always happened in Portobelo that prevented it, which for the locals was a divine message.

Another story indicates that a ship that was heading towards Cartagena Colombia, every time it tried to sail from Portobelo a storm prevented it so they had to release the cargo ship, leaving in Portobelo a box that according to locals when they opened it they found the image of El Nazareno.

While a third version says that locals found in the sea a box with the image of Christ inside, during a cholera epidemic and after opening it, days later the evil ended.

MIDES AND DIAGEO JOIN FORCES IN RAISING AWARENESS TO PREVENT ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION

MIDES and DIAGEO join forces to raise awareness among 2,000 young people in the prevention of alcohol consumption.

The Ministry of Social Development (MIDES) of Panama and DIAGEO Central America and the Caribbean, a British multinational with more than 10 years of experience in Panama, signed an agreement in principle to benefit more than 2,000 young Panamanians with free training for the prevention of alcohol consumption in Panama and promote employability in this country in the service sector.

The alliance between the Ministry of Social Development and DIAGEO takes place within the framework of the execution of two internationally successful programs of the company: SMASHED and Learning for Life. The first is a program focused on the prevention of underage alcohol consumption through interactive and educational plays that, with a group of actors, recreate the situations that young people may face today, which can lead them to consume alcohol before the age of majority. SMASHED, to date, has benefited more than 1.8 million young people globally and Panama will become the thirty-fifth country to implement this program.

For its part, Learning for Life is a program that seeks to provide training and tools to young people with limited resources within the tourism and services sector. Students receive education in business and hospitality skills to gain access to education and/or employment, with the aim of improving their quality of life and providing them with employability opportunities. In Panama, Learning for Life has graduated more than 1,000 students.

MIDES and DIAGEO join forces to raise awareness among 2,000 young people in the prevention of alcohol consumption.

The head of the social portfolio, María Inés Castillo, said that the Memorandum of Understanding signed with DIAGEO seeks to strengthen MIDES’ youth programs, focused on the prevention of alcohol consumption and enhancing the employability of young people in the country.

“We work in public-private partnership for the sustainable development of our country, specifically of youth, and in this case with the support of the company DIAGEO,” said Minister Castillo.

In the words of María Gabriela Mabo, Director of Corporate Affairs of DIAGEO Central America and the Caribbean: “We want to leave a positive legacy in Panama hand in hand with close collaboration with the Panamanian government. We thank the Ministry of Social Development for its openness and willingness to jointly execute these two programs that we know can contribute positively to the construction of a better Panama.” “SMASHED and Learning for Life are programs designed for the youth population to avoid underage alcohol consumption and for more young people to have access to opportunities for professional and personal growth, so we are excited to benefit more young people so that they can develop and become citizens who leave a positive impact on Panamanian society,”  Added.

According to the alliance signed between both entities, young people belonging to the MIDES programs, “Develop Your Skills for Life and Youth We Are the Force”, will benefit from these trainings during this year and in 2023. In addition, community training will be held with local governments in the corregimientos belonging to the Beehive Plan. The young people benefited will range between 15 and 29 years old and will be from the province of Panama.

ELECTORAL TRIBUNAL FILES THREE COMPLAINTS WITH THE ELECTORAL PROSECUTOR’S OFFICE, AFTER IRREGULARITIES IN COLLECTING SIGNATURES

The national director of Electoral Organization, Osman Valdés, filed three complaints with the Electoral Attorney General’s Office (FGE).

The Electoral Tribunal (TE), through the national director of Electoral Organization, Osman Valdés, filed three complaints with the Electoral Attorney General’s Office (FGE).

One of the complaints is for the Electoral Administrative Prosecutor’s Office  to investigate the possible commission of a contravention for the validation of false signatures of support by activists who used the application (app) of collection of signatures designed by the TE erroneously and two electoral criminal for the FGE to investigate the possible commission of electoral computer crimes related to the impersonation of identity in digital procedures before the TE by activists who engaged in a fraudulent activity, in addition to the manipulation of digital media with the purpose of affecting the integrity of the electoral process.

In the midst of the fact, the Electoral Tribunal reiterates to the Panamanian population that the application (app) for the collection of signatures in support of pre-candidates is a reliable technological tool that is equivalent to the digital version of a mobile book.

It explains that the app has the advantage that it makes an instant biometric validation of the people who give the support, and that the facts denounced today were motivated by the negligence of some activists and pre-candidates to use the app and manipulate information to alter the reliability of citizens in the applications developed by the TE in compliance with its constitutional and legal attributions,  in view of the General Election of May 5, 2022, convened by Decree 29 of May 30, 2022, published in the Bulletin of the Electoral Tribunal 5065 of May 31, 2022.

When the scandal arose, the Electoral Tribunal raised through a statement that as has been fully demonstrated before different media groups, the app does not validate signatures based on photos of people, as it has always used a “proof of life” software to corroborate that the person whose photo has been captured with the lens of the device’s camera is in front of her.

The TE stated that the videos that have circulated trying to say otherwise and that are framed in criminal acts provided for in the Electoral Code; For this reason, the corresponding criminal complaints will be filed with the Electoral Attorney General’s Office (FGE).

Based on concerns raised directly to the Electoral Tribunal by some candidates of free postulation about validations of the app when the camera lens was covered at the time of taking the citizen’s photo, the institution carried out, through the Internal Audit Directorate, a 100% audit of the signatures collected through the app,   that totaled 218, 183 signatures as of Monday, October 10, 2022, and 1,019 rubrics were detected that had to be annulled, as indeed they were on Saturday, October 15, 2022, and reduced to each pre-candidate as published in Electoral Bulletin No. 5191-A on Monday, October 17, 2022. In parallel, the system update was made from Tuesday, October 11, as mobile devices were activated.

As indicated by Decree 29 of 2022, regulating the 2024 General Election, all recidivist activists who have misused the application by collecting signatures obstructing the camera lens of the device are being suspended.

Likewise, the criminal complaint will be presented to the Electoral Attorney General’s Office to investigate and determine the criminal responsibility of the suspended activists and those who, along with them, participated in those acts.

COINS OF A BALBOA, SHOPS: CAN I PAY WITH THEM?

Circulation of counterfeit balboa coins.

In recent weeks, there have been nuisances related to the fake trafficking of coins of a balboa or Martinellis (popular term to name this currency) in Panama. To this, the  Authority for Consumer Protection and Defense of Competition (ACODECO), emphasizes that all businesses must accept as payment, legal tender coins in the country.

The coins of a balboa have more than 10 years of circulation in the country, and approximately, in this time, more than 80 million legal copies have been minted.

How does ACODECO pronounce itself before businesses that do not accept coins?

This authority maintains that businesses have the obligation to accept all legal currency in circulation in the country. However, he adds that each place can verify whether the currency is false or not, and proceed to refuse to accept it, if it has a mechanism that manages to identify anomalies.

Economic agents and businesses that do not accept legal tender in the country will be sanctioned by ACODECO, and an investigation is initiated to determine the amount of fines.

Complaints about the circulation of counterfeit coins

In Panama, complaints about this crime must be made to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, which begins the corresponding investigations.  The Ministry of Economy and Finance and the National Bank of Panama are not the entities in charge of solving the circulation of currencies.

Both entities in April, filed a lawsuit with the Public Ministry to clarify whether or not there is illegal trafficking of the coins of a balboa.

Article 376 of Law 4573 of the Criminal Code states that persons who engage in counterfeiting and circulation of coins knowing the crime shall be sentenced to 5 to 8 years in prison.

PANAMA MAYOR’S OFFICE REPORTS ON TECHNICAL FAILURE THAT AFFECTS VALIDATION OF VEHICLE REVIEW FOR PROCEDURES

A technical damage caused the loss of communication between the Municipality of Panama and the ATTT system.

The Mayor’s Office of Panama informed taxpayers that due to a technical failure in a system of the Transit and Land Transport Authority (ATTT), the integration communication between both entities that allows the validation of the vehicle review was lost.

Given this, for the removal of license plates or vehicle decals, the Mayor’s Office asks taxpayers to submit the printed vehicle review document or digital photo, so that the municipal staff enters the document number and allows the removal of the plate or sticker.

“According to the ATTT report, the solution to the problem will take some time, for that reason we have suspended the connection,” said the Mayor’s Office, which also noted that this damage also affects the process for appointments through page mupa.gob.pa.

IRREGULAR MIGRANTS HAVE COST PANAMA ABOUT $50 MILLION

Yesterday the Ombudsman’s Office made a tour of Darien.

The transit of thousands of irregular migrants through the Darien jungle has cost the Panamanian State about $50 million in the period from 2020 to 2022, according to the National Migration Service.

This money spent by Panamanian authorities on irregular migration is to provide food, lodging, security and health to thousands of people who arrive in Panama, as part of the route they undertake to reach the United States (USA).

The millionaire sum that the State spends on the issue of migrants is assumed by various public entities in the country, however, the greatest weight of this amount of money is assumed by the National Border Service (Senafront) and the National Migration Service.

Samira Gozaine, director of Migration, said that the situation of irregular migrants is “very difficult for Panama, since, although we are the only country that gives this humanitarian assistance, we are already running out of resources.”

“It’s an alarming, humanitarian situation, definitely a crisis.”

The official explained that there are very few irregular migrants who seek refuge in Panama, only 1.1% of the total who arrive in the country in search of achieving what they call “the American dream.”

So far more than 190,000 migrants have passed through the national territory, of which the vast majority are of Venezuelan nationality, who flee their country as a result of the economic crisis they are experiencing with the Government of Nicólas Maduro.

TOTAL REJECTION IN LA CHORRERA TO PROPOSAL TO MAKE PARADE OF NOVEMBER 28 IN THE CAPITAL

The November 28 Parade in La Chorrera has been a historic tradition.

The possibility that the Parade of November 28 with which the Independence of Panama from Spain is commemorated in La Chorrera, will be held in the capital city, caused unrest among the municipal authorities and the population.

Earlier this week, Luis Antonio Miller, president of the National Federation of Independent Bands, chapter 1, presented to the Ministry of Education (Meduca) a proposal to hold the November 28 Parade in the capital.

One of the first to express his concern has been the mayor of La Chorrera, Tomás Velásquez, who “deplored any decision” that is being taken on this issue, missing a few weeks for its realization.

The district of La Chorrera, said Mayor Velásquez, has a historical tradition regarding the celebration of this homeland.

He also said that holding a parade parallel to the one traditionally held in La Chorrera is an attempt against the economic reactivation that is to be achieved in the district after the Covid-19 pandemic.

The most economically affected would be the informal sector and microenterprises, which by this time is trying to generate higher sales.

Mayor Tomás Velásquez’s position was backed by the governor of the province of Panama Oeste, Sindy Smith.

The Governor ruled that while the responsibility of organizing this event falls on the municipality, the parade will be held in La Chorrera.

He added that independent bands that wish to do so and have the permits of the authorities can organize a parade in the capital city or a stadium, as was done in 2021.

For the date of November 28, informed the president of the Municipal Events Commission, Arquimedes Ortega, former world champion Roberto “Mano de Piedra” Durán has been designated as the standard-bearer of this date.

THE CRUISE SEASON BEGINS IN PANAMA, THERE ARE 256 RESERVATIONS

The cruise season in Panama runs between the months of October and May of each year.

On October 29, the 2022-2023 cruise season will begin at the Panama Cruise Terminal, with the arrival of the World Navigator cruise ship of the Mystic Cruises shipping company.

The Panama Maritime Authority (AMP) reported that it maintains to date 256 cruise reservations that will be operating in the different port terminals of the country. The main shipping lines in the world will mobilize their ships in itineraries of more than 10 days of navigation to Panama.

In the Panama Cruise Terminal there are 52 reservations, of which 22 are Base Port (Home Port) those in which there is a rotation / change of passengers, embarkation and disembarkation and 30 in transit (Port of Call) those in which passengers disembark for tours, excursions and / or purchases and return to the cruise,  explained the WAP.

According to the entity, these reservations would represent an approximate volume of 75,233 passengers and 40,529 crew members, with cruises ranging from 200 to 4,000 passengers and from 100 to 1,800 crew members.

With the start of the cruise season, the economy is directly energized by generating income and promoting new job opportunities in the regions that are visited, it also boosts the image of the country and reinforces our position in the maritime, port and logistics sector worldwide, one of the fundamental pillars of the Panamanian economy“,  highlighted the WAP.
