The redcoats are coming… …or the sky may be falling.  Reports of “Iranian Warships” sailing toward the Panama Canal are on the rise.  The legitimacy of these reports are good enough.  I mean, two vessels did stopover in Brazil and are supposedly on their way here to Panama.  Some news outlets, loyal to the Islamic nations, including the Tehran Times, have gone so far as to report that they are “already sailing along the coasts of Latin America” and “will establish a military presence in the Panama Canal”.

Let’s pick this apart a bit.  First of all, two “warships”…  nope.  The Makran was built as a crude oil tanker and launched on Sept 10, 2009.  It’s 14 years old and wasn’t added to the Iranian navy until 2021 after being refitted in 2020.  It’s Iran’s ONLY forward base ship on the Islamic Republic of Iran Navy and it’s registered in Liberia.  Having no air defense fitted, it does have a helicopter landing deck…  awe, how cute.  The Dena, which is a more formidable vessel (not by much) and categorized as a Jamaran Destroyer type, would be worth a hint of concern in other circumstances.  It is equipped with two surface-to-air missiles and four anti-ship missiles.  It also has a 76mm cannon, a 40 mm cannon, two 20mm cannons and two 533mm shark torpedo launchers.  I would add however, that if the captain of this vessel ever decided to play stupid games, they’d be met with a barrage of stupidity right back at them.  GET SOOOOOOME!!!  (Sorry, my testosterone levels just spiked.)  My point is, if I were from the south, I’d probably say something cute about Iran like, “Oh, bless their hearts.”.  One destroyer and a crude oil platform, does not establish a military presence that worries me in the least.

So what are they doing then?  They’re visiting their newer allies for the most part.  Brazil let them dock for a few days.  The Brazilian news sources were furious about it too, from what I saw and read.  Coming to Panama, is one thing, but no one here wants to have anything to do with them.  And for them to transit the canal, they need to comply with a few requirements.  For starters, they need abide by global safety norms, pay tolls and not commit any hostile acts.  I think that stating that they intend on “establishing a military presence” is a hostile act.  It sure as heck would be if they tried that crap up north.  BRING IT, BITCHES!!!  (Oops, sorry, it’s the testosterone again.)  From a friend and a good source in all things maritime, he adds that they will also need to have insurance from a global P&I Club, something that they probably don’t have because (in his words), “it’s fucking Iran”!  So, no insurance, no passage.

Now here comes the fun conspiracy part… since this isn’t any form of legitimate military presence, and Panama doesn’t want them here AND they probably can’t transit the canal, why are they coming here?  Another source says, ”it’s to exchange gold for US currency from corrupt politicians”.  Holy crap, and here I thought they were just doing it to antagonize the US.  If you think about it though, they did just stop over into Brazil, a country whose present leaders are known to be far left extremist sympathizers.  Maybe they DID make a Gold-for-cash deal?  Do they have one set up with some corrupt politicians in Panama too?  I’d watch to see who lets them park these vessels and where.  That would be quite telling.  Even though it sounds far-fetched, it’s still more believable than “establishing a military presence”.  Give me a break.

DEATHS IN THE EARTHQUAKE IN TURKEY AND SYRIA EXCEED 16 THOUSAND

The death toll in the earthquake in Turkey and Syria now exceeds 16,000.

The death toll from earthquakes that have hit Turkey and Syria has already exceeded 16,000, according to local authorities, who put the number injured by earthquakes in both countries at more than 68,000.

According to the Turkish emergency management authority AFAD, early on Thursday, four days after the earthquake with epicenter in Turkey, the official death toll has risen to 12,873, while the injured already exceed 63,000.

In the early hours of today, rescuers managed to pull a 16-year-old boy alive from the rubble, although as the hours go by, hopes of other miracles diminish.

Local experts estimate that tens of thousands of people are still under the rubble of collapsed buildings, although there is no information on the situation in most villages in the 10 provinces affected by the earthquake.

In Syria, the official death toll now stands at 3,162 and the wounded at 5,235, as rescue efforts continue in the country’s five worst-hit provinces with little hope of finding survivors.

In the opposition-held areas of Idlib and Aleppo (northwest), the toll exceeds 1,900 dead and 2,950 injured, according to the latest count offered by the White Helmets, a group of rescuers that operates in the opposition regions of Syria.

Rescuers warned that the numbers could continue to rise, as many people remain trapped under the rubble on the fourth day of emergency operations after the initial earthquake on Monday and followed by multiple aftershocks.

Another 1,262 people lost their lives and 2,285 were injured in the areas controlled by the Government of Bashar al-Assad, which has not updated its balance since yesterday.

Syrian authorities announced yesterday that nearly 293,000 people had to flee their homes as a result of the earthquakes in government areas, where some 180 shelters have been set up to accommodate those who lost their homes or whose homes suffered substantial damage.

Assad has still not spoken publicly four days after the earthquake.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has yet to give any public speech since the first earthquake struck the country four days ago, killing more than 3,000 people and devastating areas in areas controlled by his government, as well as others in opposition hands.

Although institutional silence is a tool commonly used by the Syrian authorities, Assad usually gives speeches to the nation at specific moments that require it and from time to time even accepts interviews with some media or speaks during a parliamentary session broadcast live.

In addition, members of the Cabinet of Ministers and the country’s Prime Minister, Hussein Arnous, who yesterday visited areas affected by the earthquakes in the northwestern provinces of Latakia and Aleppo in the hands of Damascus, have appeared at a press conference these days, according to the official news agency SANA.

Arnous inspected the rescue efforts underway at those points and met with local officials, as well as some citizens, a kind of “tour” that the Syrian president himself has made on other occasions, the most recent to inaugurate infrastructure rebuilt after being damaged in the war.

Among the provinces hardest hit by the quakes is Latakia, a stronghold of the Assad dynasty with a significant Alawite population, ethnic and religious minority to which he belongs, and also Christian, another key community for his political efforts.

The coastal region of Tartus, where many of Assad’s most loyal supporters are concentrated, or the city of Aleppo, the flag of his victories against the rebels during the war and over which he imposed his control in 2016, have also suffered greatly from the tragedy.

The tragedy struck Syria amid growing popular discontent over the country’s severe economic and humanitarian crisis, where there are also severe fuel shortages and there had recently been some symbolic protests against Damascus in southern towns.

MORE THAN $2.4 BILLION INVESTED AND INSECURITY PERSISTS IN PANAMA

The district of San Miguelito is one of the points of the country that is registering the greatest violence in this 2023.

The Government, led by Laurentino Cortizo and José Gabriel Carrizo, has spent about 2,430 million dollars on security from 2020 to 2022, however, insecurity has increased and is one of the issues that most concerns the Panamanian population.

While for the year 2023, the Minister of Security, Juan Manuel Pino, contemplated a budget of 903 million 108 thousand 557 dollars, however, the strategies against organized crime and crime have failed.

Proof of this are the statistics of homicides and robberies that have been registered in the country, during the same period in which this millionaire investment has been made by the Government.

From 2020 to 2022, 1,551 homicides have been registered in the country, according to statistical data from the Public Ministry (MP). While, in the same period mentioned above, the MP has received a total of 16 thousand 496 complaints for the crime of theft.

Despite this, the authorities insist that the acts of violence that are taking place in the country are directly related to the drug seizures that have been taking place in the national territory. This year 2023 has not been the exception and the bloody facts have taken the country.

So far in 2023, more than 50 homicides have been registered in various parts of the country, many of which have exposed the viciousness with which they are perpetrated.

For example, on January 19, a dog was walking in the sector of Providencia, district of San Miguelito with a human head on its snout, a scene that exposed one of the most atrocious murders that has occurred in Panama in recent years.

501 homicides were registered throughout the national territory during the year 2022.

5,760 complaints were filed with the Public Ministry for the crime of theft last year.

The head corresponded to Luis Ariel Moreno Ramírez, alias “Yeyín”, 18, to whom his enemies even recorded a video before ending his life in the atrocious way they did.

Days later, in the district of San Miguelito, another body appeared to which his eyes had been removed and the skin of his face torn off, a fact with which, according to experts, what is sought is to send a message.

For former prosecutor Angel Calderon, the security issue is not a budget issue, since there must be a plan on which the development of that money that is invested in this issue will be made.

THEY MAINTAIN THE SEARCH FOR THE MISSING BATHER ON THE COAST OF PEDASÍ

The search has been joined by organized fishermen, residents and businessmen of the community, who have made available to the Joint Task Force (FTC) boats, boats, and other resources for the search.

Without rest and for the fifth consecutive day, the security forces of the province of Los Santos, accompanied by aquatic and aerial means, try to recover the third missing person in the waters of the coasts of Pedasí, in the province of Los Santos, last Saturday afternoon.

Despite the fatigue due to the long distances traveled, the strong temperatures and the conditions of the sea in the middle of a strong wave, the rescue team continues the search for the last person of a group of three missing, members of the same family, who was visiting the place.

The search has been joined by organized fishermen, residents and businessmen of the community, who have made available to the Joint Task Force (FTC) boats, boats, and other resources for the search.

At the site, relatives of the missing, of whom two were recovered, including a 13-year-old boy, await the arrival of news about the last person to be found, and ask rescuers not to give up.

The relatives indicated that unscrupulous people have taken on the task of requesting money through social networks for the purchase of food and fuel, a request that they denied and asked the population not to fall into this scam, during the pain of a family.

Commissioner Gabriel Arroyavez, Chief of the Fourth Aeronaval Region, said that despite the intense search there are no indications yet of this person, so the search has extended to rivers and streams, and aircraft of the institution have been used to support the work.

He added that the members of the Joint Task Force have great faith that the location of this person will be possible soon.

The three people, from the province of Coclé, were swept away by a strong current on Saturday afternoon, while enjoying a family weekend  in the tourist district of Pedasí, in the sector known as Boca de Oria.

On the other hand, it is expected that in the next few hours the authorities of the Public Ministry will announce the identity of the two people who died at the mouth of the Oria River, in Pedasí.

The authorities maintain the recommendations to the citizens of the care that must be taken when visiting beaches and rivers during family outings.

MORE THAN 31,000 MIGRANTS HAVE CROSSED THE DARIÉN JUNGLE

In 2022, Venezuelan nationality (150,327) led the historic passage of 248,284 migrants.

More than 31,000 irregular migrants traveling to North America have crossed so far this year the dangerous jungle of Darién, the natural border between Colombia and Panama, almost the same number as in the first 5 months of 2022, according to official Panamanian statistics.

From January 1 until the early hours of Wednesday, a total of 31,610 migrants in mobility had crossed the jungle, of 266 kilometers, according to data provided to EFE by the National Migration Service (SNM). Between January and May 2022 the figure reached 33,819.

15% of travelers so far this year are “people in a special state of vulnerability: children and adolescents,” the deputy director of the SNM, María Isabel Saravia, told EFE on Wednesday.

Last January alone, 24,634  people arrived in the Panamanian province of Darién, more than five times more than in the same month last year. And so far in February it had done 6,976, of which 1,156 arrived on Tuesday.

THE CROSSING OF HAITIANS AND EXTRACONTINENTALS GROWS

Haitian nationals are the largest migrant group so far with 12,585 people, followed by Ecuador (8,240), Venezuela (3,535), India (641) and Colombia (465). The rest of the travelers come from more than 30 countries around the world, including South American, Asian and African.

“This year we have had an increase in extracontinental citizens, who enter the American continent through the South. We have had an increase in Colombian and Ecuadorian citizens,” Saravia said.

In 2022, Venezuelan nationality (150,327) led the historic passage of 248,284 irregular migrants through the jungle, followed by Ecuador (29,356) and Haiti (22,435); in 2021, it was Haitians, and years before, in the crisis of 2015-2016 it was Cubans.

The restrictions imposed by the United States on the entry of irregular Venezuelan migrants in mid-October stopped the avalanche of these, which was evidenced in the numbers of travelers crossing the Darién: from 59,773 in that same month they fell to 16,632 in November 2022.

The dynamics on the nationalities that cross the jungle the most “we expect to change throughout the year. It will depend on the (migratory) policies of the United States and Canada, which are the main destinations,” as well as on third countries “opening visa-free,” said Panama’s deputy director of Migration.

DEPUTY MAYOR JUDY MEANA RESIGNED

Judy Meana resigns.

The 2019 – 2024 mayoral formula came to an end on Wednesday when the resignation of the vice mayor of the district of Panama, Judy Meana, was known.

Meana informed Mayor José Luis Fábrega about her resignation through a letter.

In the letter, Meana expressed her “deep disagreement” with what she described as “arbitrary practices” in decision-making that jeopardize the credibility of her government.

Meana warns that these actions are bringing her closer to the “dangerous abyss of injustice that produces unrest in the population of the city.”

“I can attest to this, my predisposition in the search for solutions even in the face of the most severe crises that I had to face due to the unilateral and unconsulted decisions that you, Mr. Mayor, have taken taking advantage of the powers that your position confers on you, which allows you the unipersonal management of all government action and that you have confused with signs of autocracy,  managing without any consultation with his running mates, transforming into arbitrariness the one-person decisions he has carried out,” Meana said.

“You must be clear that this resignation from my position as vice mayor of Panama City for the period 2019 – 2024, only manifests my deep disagreement with your arbitrary practices in decision-making that put at risk the credibility of your government, approaching the dangerous abyss of injustice that produces discomfort in the population of the city,” Meana added.

Meana’s resignation comes amid the controversial tax increase approved by the Municipality of Panama City and which was described by various unions as unconsulted and divorced from the economic reality of taxpayers.

“I assumed a commitment to the citizens who voted for me and during these years of management I always tried to protect the institutions of the Republic. Fulfilling that mandate by listening to the citizens, looking into their eyes, and making me aware of the difficulties with which they came to me, every Panamanian of this beloved city,” said Meana.

Meana previously held the leadership of the Government of the province of Panama, a position from which she also resigned.

MENTAL BLOCK: HOW TO AVOID IT AND WHAT CAUSES IT?

Mental block: How to avoid it and what causes it?

Sometime in our lives we have been victims of a mental block, where you can not create clearly, creative ideas vanish and it costs twice as much to do what in normal situations, do not take more than a few minutes. These are some characteristics of a mental block and today we will tell you the easiest ways to get out of a blockage and even better, avoid it.

One of the recommendations to avoid a mental block is to be a proactive person.

Mental block: How to avoid it?

  • Rest your mind: Mental blocks are a red flag sent by our brain to make us see that we need to rest. The fact of taking about 10 to 15 minutes and letting go of our obligations will make a noticeable difference and allow us to be shiny when we return to daily obligations.
  • Avoid procrastinating: Avoiding being a procrastination puppet could be a tool to prevent mental blocks. Well, the accumulation of tasks at the moment allows us to rest, however, when the time comes to carry out the assignments it will make us perform them under stress which can be a trigger for a blockage.
  • Control stress levels: Everyone is vulnerable to spending stress levels during the day, but the reaction to these pressure situations will play a fundamental role in our mental health. Premeditating a misfortune and practicing a reaction could help us not to detonate a mental block.
  • Sleep properly: Resting about 7 or 8 hours a day will make our mind stay fresh constantly.
