Friday, April 14, 2023

Having been under the weather so long, I decided to take my evenings off, relaxing with a calm, soothing TV series that I haven’t had the chance to watch before.  So many of my friends suggested that I watch it, and that I’d love this well-thought out, brilliant family show.  So I opened a new bottle of Pinot Noir, some Gruyere and Gouda cheeses for a splendid pairing and turned on “Breaking Bad”.  Holy crap, these people are CRAY-CRAY!!!  The horrific deaths and underworld drug abuse are things of insanity.  I mean who thought up this type of rubbish?  I can’t believe anyone would take the time to watch such trash.  So, I’m on Season 4…  I won’t spoil it, I hope, but what fascinates me more is the subtle transition the main character has from sweet, humble, kind, family-focused man to what I think is going to be a cold-blooded, heartless drug overlord.  It’s almost a double-personality, which being a Gemini I can sort of relate.

I love watching people in general.  (That sounded a bit ominous.). Either during an interview or in a crowd, I like to try and imagine the person in different scenarios, wondering how they would react or “deal with” any number of situations.  Watching this show, reminds me of a few people I’ve come across who were beautifully unpredictable in their own savage way.  You, the reader, and I are sane… …or sane enough for day to day dealings and our interactions with people are going to be generally polite and conversations meaningful.  But, I had the pleasure to deal with one person whose actions were too difficult to predict to the point where they just shouldn’t be left alone too long for their own safety.  He was recommended by someone else to work with us on a surveillance about 20 years ago.  During the interview, everything seemed fine and he was obviously knowledgeable about the work having been with the police before.  What I didn’t know is that although he was with the now defunct PTJ, no one in the institution would allow him to drive, or go on case assignments alone, ever, for any reason.  Why?  Because out of nowhere, he would just randomly do the first dumbass thing that popped into his head.

So we have him on surveillance, just off a side street in Marbella, close to Calle 50.  All he had to do was sit and wait for someone to show up and then report the finding to us.  It was really the simplest thing to do in surveillance.  Instead, in his infinite boredom, he suddenly realizes that he has no idea how fast the car he was assigned is and should figure that out in the event he has to be involved in a high-speed pursuit… …which is exactly what we did NOT want him to do.  So, from the tire marks we saw on the street, he must have literally hit the gas off this side street and luckily/unfortunately ran smack dab into the side of a bus in motion, slowing him to an abrupt and immediate stop.  I added “luckily” because this was one of those Diablo Rojo types of monster vehicles and no one was hurt.  I think if he would have had his way, if he would have gotten on to Calle 50, he would have been flying down Main Street at top speed running over little old ladies, just out of his own insane curiosity.  And that’s what it’s like watching Breaking Bad.  A series of nonstop randomly heinous scenarios that take off and then abruptly stop, but then take off again.  It’s hard to not watch as you keep wondering what the next bus accident is going to be like and if this time someone’s going to die because of a chain of bad ideas.  Yep, I love it.

DGI: SERVICE OFFICES WILL HAVE NEW HEADQUARTERS IN VIA ESPAÑA

DGI.

Starting on April 18, 2023, the General Directorate of Revenues (DGI) of the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) will have the new offices of the Provincial Revenue Administration of Panama (API), which will be located on the ground floor of the Ogawa building, on Vía España.

The offices plan to provide efficient and modern attention to users who come to the facilities in order to shorten waiting times. This measure was taken for the benefit of taxpayers in other matters “by reducing bureaucratic processes and making use of technology through the e-tax 2.0 System.”

What is the DGI’s e-tax 2.0 system?

The e-tax 2.0 system is an online platform that allows taxpayers to carry out procedures online from the comfort of their home or office. This system allows procedures such as tax filing and invoice generation by logging in with a username and password.

“What we seek is to implement a modern, efficient attention process and reduce waiting times in customer service, continuing with an education process, so that taxpayers who need to attend the offices know, apply, and safely use the technological system, to avoid in-person attention,” emphasized Angélica Cedeño, administrator of the direction.

28 MILLION TONS OF PAPER SAVED WITH DIGITAL GOVERNMENT

The public administration is moving towards a paperless government.

200 administrative procedures have been digitized and in March the figure of 2 million citizens who have carried out at least one electronic procedure with a State institution was reached.

“We have saved more than 28 million tons of paper and hundreds of kilometers of lines,” said Luis Oliva, administrator of the Authority for Government Innovation (AIG).

Despite these numbers, it is just the beginning of a transformation towards achieving a paperless government, a project that has been ongoing for several years.

“It is a process. Part of the digital transformation involves a change of paradigms, and many times people say that the law does not allow it because everything has to be done with paper,” acknowledged Oliva.

The AIG has been working with Law 144, which allows digital processes to be carried out with electronic signatures, with the same validity as physical documents.

The interest is not only to digitize more procedures in State entities, but to eliminate them to avoid bureaucracy being transferred to the electronic sphere.

“We should not ask citizens for information that the State already has,” said Oliva.

To access the portal, the citizen must register with their ID number and will have access to procedures, requirements for procedures, and links to State entity portals.

Panama Digital is a portal that brings together government procedures online through a digital platform that reduces bureaucracy, facilitates business operations, and improves the country’s competitiveness.

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has chosen Panama to create the digital hub of the region, a project that will be developed in Ciudad del Saber.

The bidding for the project must take place this year and the hub must be built in three years, which involves the relocation of the AIG to the Clayton scientific complex, next to the Senacyt.

Furthermore, the AIG is working to increase internet coverage nationwide, with funds obtained from the sale of radio spectrum.

“There is approximately $13 million that will be used to increase internet access in communities with difficult access and in schools,” the official revealed.

SAHARA DUST PARTICLE SURVEILLANCE ADVISORY EXTENDED

Sahara Dust.

The Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology of Panama (IMHPA) has extended the warning for surveillance of Saharan Dust particles in the country. According to IMHPA, concentrations will be less than 15 Mg/m3, which can create hazy conditions with suspended dust in the air.

People with respiratory allergies are more sensitive to Saharan Dust, so it is recommended to use protection such as masks to avoid any kind of reaction.

According to IMHPA’s estimate, the surveillance warning extends from today, Tuesday, April 11, to next Thursday, April 13. All of Panama remains under warning, with the areas of greatest impact being the central and western provinces.

Saharan Dust is essentially crushed rocks that contain chemical elements that function as fertilizer for plants and places in the Amazon. However, it affects air quality and increases pollution levels, which is detrimental to the health of people who, as mentioned earlier, have some type of respiratory problem.

WOMAN IS 125 YEARS OLD AND MAY BE THE OLDEST IN PANAMA

Woman is 125 years old and may be the oldest in Panama.

A woman who lives in the Emberá Wounaan region, in the Lajas Blancas district, a community located three hours from Meteti, in the province of Darien, called Mercedes Chami Dogirama, is considered the oldest person in Panama; she was born on March 13, 1898, and turned 125 years old this year.

According to the latest data collected in the XII National Population Census carried out by the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC), she would be the Panamanian with the most years.

National Censuses: Are there more long-lived people in Panama?

Preliminary data from the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC) place Doña Mercedes as the oldest person in the country at 125 years old, followed by a man living in the province of Colón at 118 years old, and in third place a woman of 116 years old who resides in the province of Veraguas.

“These censuses have allowed us to reveal important data, such as the oldest person in the history of the country and possibly the world. The honor belongs to Mrs. Mercedes, a Panamanian citizen who has been an example for her people, full of culture and history. We share this information duly authorized by her family,” said the Comptroller General, Gerardo Solis.

Who is the oldest person in the world?

According to classification data from the Gerontological Research Group, the oldest person in the world is a Spanish woman named María Branyas Morera, who is 115 years old. She is followed by Japanese woman Fusa Tasumi, while American Edie Caccarelli completes the podium with 115 years and 1 day.

It should be noted that all the supercentenarians who are part of this classification are women, which is not surprising if one considers the higher life expectancy that generally exists among the female population.

Mercedes Chami Dogirama is a mother of seven (7) children, two (2) of whom have already passed away. As part of her family tree, she has 54 descendants among grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all residents of the Lajas Blancas district.

Her daughter of the same name, who authorized the story of her mother to be told, expressed how proud she feels to know that her mother will be part of Panama’s history, becoming the oldest woman in the country and possibly in the world.

She comments that her mother has impeccable health, walks, sews, and sometimes even cooks. She believes that a healthy diet could be one of the factors that have allowed her to reach such an advanced age.

PROJECT SEEKING TO REGULATE PLATFORMS, WITHOUT AGREEMENT

They are debating the use of technology platforms for transportation.

The controversial Project 986, which seeks to establish a regulatory framework for the use of information technology platforms, has reached the Transportation Commission of the National Assembly, where the parties presented their considerations on the matter.

Drivers from these technology platforms and taxis nationwide participated in the discussion.

It should be noted that this project establishes a regulatory framework for the use of communication and information technology platforms in luxury taxi services offered by operation certificate concessionaires of companies providing passenger transportation services.

One of the most discussed articles in this debate establishes that companies dedicated to the development and commercialization of technology platforms for the use of intermediation in the provision of selective passenger transport services may only contract with selective transport service providers established in the country.

Based on this, the operation certificate concessionaires of these companies can opt for the provision of this service.

Digital platform drivers reject this proposal expressing their dissatisfaction, as they would be obliged to belong to a public transportation provider through a quota system, which they consider inefficient and unconstitutional.

In rejection of this project, transport platform drivers held a march from the Mercado del Marisco to the Assembly.

986 is the project number of the bill that seeks to regulate digital platforms.

8,000 drivers would be affected by bill number 986.

They said that about 8,000 platform drivers would be affected by the approval of this proposed law.

Meanwhile, taxi drivers commented that just as they are regulated and must comply with a series of requirements imposed by the Land Transit and Transportation Authority, the same should be done with digital platforms.

IRREGULAR MIGRATION: WHAT ACTIONS WILL PANAMA, COLOMBIA, AND THE US TAKE?

Irregular migration: What actions will Panama, Colombia and the United States carry out?

A sustainable plan that provides mechanisms to combat human trafficking and smuggling networks, as well as the opening of legal and flexible channels for those who travel through these territories, are some of the agreed actions sought by the countries of Panama, Colombia, and the United States in the Trilateral Meeting held on February 14th in Apartadó,  Colombia to address irregular migration in the three territories.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Janaina Tewaney Mencomo, said that at that time, “concerns and proposals for better management of the flow of people with a humanistic and security-focused approach” were discussed.

Actions submitted by countries

  • Combating trafficking and smuggling networks that promote the illicit movement of people and goods through the Darien, both by land and sea, which puts the lives of migrants at risk and exposes them to exploitation for significant profits.
  • Opening legal and flexible pathways for migrants and refugees as an alternative to crossing through the Darien.
  • Launching a plan to reduce poverty.
  • Improving the provision of public services.
  • Creating jobs.
  • Promoting sustainable economic opportunities in the border communities of northern Colombia and southern Panama, through international partnerships between financial institutions, civil society, and the private sector.

At the said meeting, the actions taken are, in the first instance, a call to address the situation that these nations in the continent have been going through for some years.

CERRO PATACÓN: STATE OF ENVIRONMENTAL EMERGENCY DECLARED IN THE LANDFILL

Cerro Patacon.

The Cabinet Council approved on Tuesday in its ordinary session the Declaration of Environmental Emergency in the Cerro Patacón landfill, with the purpose of carrying out an intervention to mitigate the pollution and damage caused by the landfill.

The approved declaration instructs the Ministry of Environment (MiAmbiente), the Ministry of Health (Minsa), the Urban and Household Cleaning Authority (AAUD), as well as other corresponding institutions, to adopt inter-institutional measures and address the environmental disaster.

The Minister of Environment, Milciades Concepción, explained that the measure enables the immediate intervention of other institutions to mitigate the disaster caused by the historical mismanagement of solid waste in the landfill.

The environmental emergency is necessary to carry out better management of the landfill in the face of the environmental and health risks posed by the mismanagement of solid waste inherited by the company Urbalia, S.A., which failed to comply with the contract and environmental measures when operating the landfill.

The irregularities committed pose a threat to the health of the populations near the site, as well as to the students and teachers of the Kuna Nega School.

Many people have been affected in their respiratory health due to the landfill, not to mention the repercussions they have experienced from the recurring fires that have occurred this year.

The measure authorizes the acquisition of goods and services necessary during the validity of the environmental state of emergency, which will be carried out in accordance with the consolidated text of Law 22 of 2006, ordered by Law 153 of 2020.

Likewise, the Ministry of Security is instructed to adopt the necessary measures to guarantee security in the Cerro Patacón landfill and direct influence areas for the duration of the measure.

FOOD AND NUTRITION EDUCATION STRENGTHENED IN SCHOOLS

FAO’s collaboration in the project is of paramount importance.

From April 11th to 13th, the workshop “Strengthening capacities of teachers in food and nutritional education for better nutrition” is being held, with the participation of nine countries from Latin America and the Caribbean. The event is a joint effort of the Brazil-FAO International Cooperation, the FAO representation in Panama, and the Ministry of Education (Meduca).

The official opening of the event was carried out by the Minister of Education, Maruja Gorday de Villalobos, and attended by Erika Pinto, Assistant Representative of FAO Panama, Plinio Pereira De Assis from ABC/MRE, Deborah Bosco from FNDE/MEC, and Najla Veloso from Brazil-FAO Cooperation.

The workshop aims to promote the training of teachers and strengthen local capacities to scale up projects and actions of food and nutritional education (FNE) in the context of School Feeding Programs (PAE) and the curriculum.

“The workshop will strengthen the National School Nutrition and Health Program, through the development and implementation of a second phase of the ‘Study without Hunger’ program, which started with 272 educational centers and, for this year, covers 500 schools reaching 102,000 students included in the Colmena Plan, executed by the National Government,” explained Minister Gorday de Villalobos.

The collaboration of FAO in the project is of utmost importance, given its technical, organizational, and outreach capabilities aimed at reducing hunger in the world, with an impact on school projects, which are the most important place in human development, after the home.

The speaker stated that teacher training plays a key role in contributing to the development of healthy eating habits, improving students’ learning, and promoting a healthy lifestyle among the school population.

For her part, Pinto from FAO-Panama said that the workshop has the support of the Brazilian Cooperation Agency, with which they have been working together for more than 15 years in the Sustainable School program. She explained that part of FAO’s work is to support public policies in countries, which is why they supported and accompanied Meduca in the design of the Estudiar sin Hambre program.

Experts from the Brazil-FAO Cooperation and tutors from the countries involved in this process in Chile, Colombia, El Salvador, Ecuador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peru, and the Dominican Republic also participated in the activity, as well as representatives from the Brazilian Cooperation Agency of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (ABC/MRE) and the National Education Development Fund of the Ministry of Education (FNDE/MEC).

Panama was represented by collaborators from the National Directorates of School Health and Nutrition, International Cooperation, Curriculum and Educational Technology, grade coordinators, and teachers responsible for subjects related to school nutrition and health. Representatives from other ministries and sectors related to these topics also participated.

PANAMA WILL BE ABLE TO EXPORT MEAT TO THE UNITED STATES

Panama.

This morning, the Minister of Health, Luis Francisco Sucre, and the Regional Director of Quarantine Services of the Regional International Organization for Agricultural Health (OIRSA), Raúl Rodas, signed an agreement to expedite payment through the regional agency for inspectors of beef slaughter plants in Panama.

Minister Sucre indicated that with this signing, the government is making progress towards the intention of exporting national beef to the United States, which will greatly benefit the country’s livestock sector.

Panama tried to export meat to the United States almost 40 years ago.

Multiple meetings were held with the representatives of the meat-producing guilds in the country, led by the Vice Minister of Health, Ivette Berrio, to reach this point.

It should be noted that after 40 years of attempts, Panama’s meat products will finally have access to the North American market.

“With this, we fulfill one of the requirements to achieve equivalences with the United States, there are other topics to cover such as organization, legal issues, and training of veterinarians with the aim of strengthening our human resources to achieve all,” said Minister Sucre.

For his part, the regional director of Quarantine Services for the Regional International Organization of Agricultural Health (OIRSA), Raul Rodas, mentioned that the export of meat from Panama will depend on how quickly the compliance with the requirements established by the United States Department of Agriculture is managed, in what concerns OIRSA.

Immediately, the technical teams of Minsa and OIRSA begin to work to implement this agreement and meet one of the requirements requested by the United States Department of Agriculture, which is the fact that there are no conflicts of interest between the private sector and the instances that regulate the quality and safety of the meat product to be exported to the North American market.”

SCAMMERS IMPERSONATE IDENTITIES IN CAR SALES

Scammers are engaged in the alleged sale of cars and electronic items through social networks.

The National Police warn about scammers who are impersonating the identities of other people to carry out scams in the sale of cars through social media, with the aim of gaining the trust of victims.

According to ongoing investigations, these criminals are making posts about cars and electronic goods, and when contacted by someone interested, they request a down payment, sending as proof of reliability an ID or other document belonging to a third party who has nothing to do with the scam.

Who are the documents stolen from?

According to cyber patrols carried out, the victims are people who at some point shared a photo of their documents for some procedure and ended up in the hands of scammers.

Captain Wladimir González, head of the Cybercrime Division of the Judicial Investigation Directorate (DIJ), recommends that people who want to buy a second-hand vehicle take preventive measures and ask the seller to physically come to the DIJ to carry out the corresponding inspection, in order to first determine that the asset exists and second that it is not a stolen or robbed car.

Furthermore, he advises against making advance payments without ensuring that it is a legal sale, in case the “online seller” indicates that you cannot see the car without making a payment, it is already an alert that you are facing a scam.

Likewise, the general population is urged to avoid posting or sharing their personal documents on social networks or instant messaging platforms.

In case your documents are being used for fraud, file a complaint with the Public Ministry.

In October of last year, through Operation Ardid, four members of a criminal group dedicated to aggravated scams through the sale of cars with fake documents were apprehended.

This group sold cars with fake documents, later took possession of the vehicle, claiming to have reported it stolen and that they also held the legal documents.

This is a list of the number of cases per day since the first case was discovered in Panama

END NOTES:

If you read my intro to this newsletter, this next list is fitting.  What makes Breaking Bad so good is actor Bryan Cranston’s development of Walter White into “Heisenberg”.  He’s a very believable “lovable family man” from his portrayal of “Hal Wilkerson” in “Malcom in the Middle”.  Sweet, and goofy, turns to harsh and deadly in just a few seasons.  The following is a list of some of my favorite badass actors in history.  Yeah, there are a lot, and I wish I could honor them all, but here’s a good list I cherry picked from the internet for your review:

Chuck Norris didn’t make the list — he is the list

The real Chuck Norris is even more badass than the legendary one. From his un-shaveable beard to his unstoppable boot, Norris’ legend has spawned a list of jokes as far-reaching and devastating as his roundhouse. We won’t dare say his list of famous feats are imagined (he can hear us), but there’s more to the man than his myth.

Born Carlos Ray Norris in 1940 in Ryan, Oklahoma, Norris began training for 20+ hours a week in Tang Soo Do and Judo while serving in the United States Air Force in South Korea in the late 1960s. Norris did pretty well, eventually winning the world middleweight karate championship six years in a row. He even founded his own style, a Korean-American hybrid called Chun Kuk Do, or “Universal Way,” now known as “the Chuck Norris System.” Among his other real-life feats are training Steve McQueen in karate, having his own line of “Action Jeans,” and being the first Westerner to earn the rank of eight-degree black belt grand master in Taekwondo (as well as black belts in Judo, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, and Tang Soo Do). Norris hasn’t lost a fight since 1968, though we’re pretty sure he only lost in the first place to prove that yes, he can do anything.

Bruce Lee was a badass actor and a martial arts master

The father of Western martial arts films, Bruce Lee gave us some truly epic fight scenes, but his big screen adventures weren’t the result of special effects — Lee was the real deal. And when you know what he was capable of, you know he totally could’ve taken Brad Pitt’s character in Once Upon A Time … in Hollywood.

Bruce Lee was born in San Francisco in 1940 and became a child actor in Hong Kong. Lee was no Shirley Temple, though, and he began training in kung fu when he was just a kid. Lee eventually returned to the U.S., where he attended the University of Washington and opened a martial arts school. While Lee is best remembered for being a pioneering Asian-American movie star who stood toe-to-toe with studio bosses to break down stereotypes and bring kung fu movies to American audiences, he was also a once-in-a-generation martial artist too, both onscreen and off. Lee developed his own style, Jeet Kune Do, or “Way of the Intercepting Fist,” and he could even knock a man down with a one-inch punch. Sadly, Bruce Lee tragically died in his early 30s from a cerebral edema. Had Lee lived longer, his badass bona fides would’ve been too long to list.

Mel Brooks’ war service was no laughing matter

Mel Brooks is known as the mind behind some of the funniest comedies of all time — Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, The Producers, and Spaceballs to name a few. Despite his reputation as one of America’s most successful funnymen, Brooks’ military career is no laughing matter. Born Melvin Kaminsky in 1926 in Brooklyn, Brooks was drafted into World War II. While overseas, Brooks served as a corporal in the 1104 Engineer Combat Battalion, 78th Infantry Division. His job title was combat engineer and one of his duties was, get this, defusing landmines. No wonder Brooks never sweated a bad review — he defused bombs in WWII, for crying out loud!

During his stint in the military he also fought in the Battle of the Bulge, a German counteroffensive that was halted by Allied forces, effectively stopping the Nazis in their tracks. Despite seeing the horrors of the Nazis up close in World War II, Brooks came home and figured the best way to fight the tyranny they represented was by ridiculing them. Brooks’ The Producers is perhaps best known for the absurd musical number “Springtime for Hitler,” which makes of mockery of his old wartime adversaries.

Arnold Schwarzenegger terminated the bodybuilding competition

Arnold Schwarzenegger practically invented the modern action hero genre that defined the 1980s. After all, he was a one-man army who solidified his big screen persona in films like The Terminator, Predator, Total Recall, The Running Man, and Commando, just to name a few. But you don’t take down thousands of bad guys without breaking a sweat if you don’t have the bulk to match. Schwarzenegger did.

In fact, Schwarzenegger built his larger-than-life legend one curl, crunch, squat and press at a time. Literally. Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger was born in Austria in 1947, but he dreamed of coming to America and saw bodybuilding as the way to make that happen. It worked out pretty well for him, as he racked up an incredible list of accomplishments in bodybuilding, including seven Mr. Olympias, one of the best records in the history of the event. Oh yeah, he also served as governor of the most populated state in the U.S. too, so there’s that. For being the literal definition of a self-made man and one of the most accomplished competitors in his sport’s history, Schwarzenegger is definitely a badass.

Harrison Ford to the rescue

Most movie stars would consider themselves lucky to play one iconic big screen hero. Harrison Ford has played two — Indiana Jones and Han Solo. In fact, Ford’s heroic roles are so memorable that he placed twice in the top 15 on AFI’s 100 greatest heroes list, with the intrepid archaeologist ranking #2. Throw in Rick Deckard from Blade Runner, Dr. Richard Kimble from The Fugitive, and Jack Ryan from the Tom Clancy series, and Harrison Ford has plenty of unforgettable moments and characters that put him in the movie hero hall of fame.

However, Ford has proven that the best way to be a believable big screen hero is to also be one in real life. Ford is a trained airplane and helicopter pilot, and on numerous occasions, he’s come to the rescue of people in danger. In 2000, he saved two hikers who got stranded at the top of Table Mountain in Wyoming. The next year, he rescued a 13-year old Boy Scout who got separated from his troop. And that’s not even counting the times Ford has saved people in roadside accidents. While nobody wants to be in danger, it must be nice having Dr. Jones come save you.

Christopher Lee was a badass actor with incredible secrets

Sir Christopher Lee is known for playing some of cinema’s most diabolical villains, including Dracula, Saruman, and Francisco Scaramanga, aka one of the very best Bond villains. But while nobody was better at being bad in the movies, Christopher Lee was a good guy in real life, and he took on some of history’s worst villains.

Born in 1922, Lee had served the Finnish in the Winter War against the Soviet Union in 1939. He joined the Royal Air Force in 1940 and served in the Long Range Desert Group during World War II, where he fought behind enemy lines and destroyed German aircraft. Ever the dutiful soldier, Lee kept quiet about his service well into his later years, saying, “I was attached to the SAS from time to time, but we are forbidden — former, present, or future — to discuss any specific operations. Let’s just say I was in Special Forces and leave it at that.” As if that isn’t badass enough, Lee also had a career in heavy metal, and he set a Guinness World Record in 2007 for the most screen credits for a living actor, 244 film and TV movies. On a list full of certifiable badasses, Sir Christopher Lee may rule them all.

Dolph Lundgren’s IQ (and roundhouse) will break you

The 6’5″ Swede who’s best known for breaking Apollo Creed in Rocky IV could’ve beaten him just as easily (and far less bloodily) in chess or debate. Dolph Lundgren is trained in the Kyokushinkai style of karate, and while serving in the Swedish Marine Corps, he competed in the Second World Open Karate Tournament in Tokyo in 1979. Lundgren was only a green belt at the time and had to borrow a brown belt in order to compete, but he went the distance against a second-degree black belt in the finals before losing in a controversial decision.

Lundgren continued to compete, winning the British Open Knockdown Heavyweight title in 1980 and 1981 and winning the Australian Open Championship in the individual and team events in 1982. The idea of getting roundhouse kicked by Ivan Drago is frankly terrifying, but he’s just as skilled with his brain. He’s far from being a musclebound meathead, and he earned a degree in Chemical Engineering from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, a master’s from the University of Sydney in Australia (while working as a bouncer), and even received a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Lundgren left M.I.T. to pursue acting, costing the world a brilliant scientific mind but gifting us a badass action star instead. As if that isn’t enough, Lundgren is also multilingual, so he can sound scary saying “I must break you” in several languages.

Steve Buscemi answered the call of duty

Steve Buscemi has built a cinematic career on playing creepy and/or meek characters, but in real life, he’s an honest to goodness hero. Before becoming an actor, Buscemi served as a firefighter for the New York City Fire Department after taking a civil service exam at the behest of his father. Buscemi fought fires for four years, and decades later, he could still vividly remember the sensations of being face to face with a raging inferno (which he compared to acting in theater).

Despite Martin Scorsese and the Coen Brothers having his phone number, Buscemi never forgot where he came from, and he answered the call to duty when it mattered most. Following the attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, Buscemi worked 12-hour shifts for several days, searching for survivors with other firefighters. Buscemi was as humble as he was heroic, saying, “It was a privilege to be able to do it.”

Audie Murphy is the most decorated American soldier ever

The most highly decorated soldier in American military history was also an actor. Audie Murphy was born in Texas in 1925, and he helped raise his 11 brothers and sisters after his father abandoned the family, dropping out of the fifth grade to earn money as a sharecropper. Following the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, Murphy falsified his age and joined the Army at 17 years old in 1942. Murphy’s legendary military exploits are many, but his most courageous act was mounting an abandoned, burning tank destroyer and with a single machine gun taking on six German Panzer tanks and 250 infantrymen. Murphy single-handedly stopped the enemy advance, which allowed him to lead his men in driving the Germans from Holtzwihr in 1945.

After the war’s end, Murphy was discovered by movie star James Cagney and began a successful film career, particularly in Westerns. Murphy’s high point as an actor was playing himself in To Hell and Back, though he wanted the story to reflect the experience of all infantry men, not just himself. “I’ve always felt their story should be told,” said Murphy. “I just play a part in it.

Robert Mitchum was an actor who made being bad cool

Robert Mitchum was as cool as they come during his Hollywood heyday. Whether he was playing a morally complicated hero, like in Out of the Past, or certifiable villainous psychopaths, like in Night of the Hunter or Cape Fear, Robert Mitchum was not a guy to be messed with. And that went for real life, as well, since the dude was a total badass.

In his early teens, he was picked up for vagrancy and served on a chain gang. Mitchum eventually made his way to Los Angeles, California, and found work as a ghostwriter and machine operator, before making the move to acting. But when his acting career started to take off, fame didn’t stop his rebellious streak. In 1948, he was arrested for possession of marijuana, which was a huge deal in the 1940s. Thanks to intervention by RKO studio chief Howard Hughes, Mitchum’s career survived, and his stint behind bars only served to bolster his “bad boy” image. But don’t let his time in the slammer, his boxing cred, or the fact he rode rail cars fool you. Mitchum was a Renaissance man who also wrote songs and poetry. And while this isn’t bad ass per se, he also recorded a Calypso album in 1957, because he could.
