Sodium Hypochlorite and Hydrogen Hydroxide; Worse than Expected, Oh Please; Brett’s Music

Although we’ve done our best to make every day a fun day, today was rather… …lame. No woodworking, lamp making, plant care, bird watching, vehicle maintenance, lawnmowing, game playing, food creations or anything else related to fun to report on. I didn’t even “almost get arrested” today.

So, whilst boredom settled over my weary soul, I began scouring social media to see what problems abound for me to resolve. I noted one series of online complaints that started yesterday. It appears that “the banks” were only allowing ATM withdrawals of $200 or $250 per transaction and the cost was over $5.00 each pull. I had the opportunity to talk to the private bankers who told me that this wasn’t a policy that they’ve implemented. The banks actually have more cash than usual available. I also spoke with the companies who control the movement of funds to the ATMs who also said the same. The person I spoke with added that the government hasn’t come down to them with that order. Apparently, the only change has been with the government banks Banco Nacional and Caja de Ahorros. I suppose that these are the more readily available banks in the interior, but if you can, try using the private banks like Banco General or Credicorp Bank to take out cash. I haven’t tested these ATMs, nor will I be able to in the interior for obvious reasons, but that may be the solution. I would have followed up with these enquiries, but all of a sudden…

WHAM!, I got 5 reports dropped in my lap for little ol’ me to review on the oh-so-enthusing topics of Block 1 reopening protocols, quotes for the mass purchasing of sanitary items, the creation and organization of special committees on health and hygiene for the prevention and attention of COVID-19 and I now have pages that establish any number of methods on how to sanitize a human being before they enter your premises. Yay me!  By the by, did you know that Sodium hypochlorite is the main chemical used in the sanitization tunnels as a method to sterilize YOU as a person?  Did you know that this happens to be a high-risk chemical compound with the formula NaOCl, comprising a sodium cation and a hypochlorite anion?  Wehehehell, l’ll have you know that I now know more about this than I eeeeever thought I’d need to.  Hell, besides Advanced Chemistry in High School, I didn’t even think I’d ever say anything more impressive than “Hydrogen Hydroxide”… …in a bar… …just to impress the ladies.  And even THAT ship sailed many years ago, right dear?

RECOMMENDATIONS ARE MADE TO ESTABLISH THE COMMITTEE OF CARE FOR COVID-19 IN COMPANIES

Roberto Samaniego, a specialist in risk management compliance, made recommendations for the formation of the special health and hygiene committee for the prevention and care of COVID-19. He recommended that the members of the committee may be the personnel that are part of the Human Resources department, because confidential information will be handled, such as the background of people or that they have any special condition.

He also said that the committee should be made up of personnel who behave ethically within the organization, as well as an opinion leader, with communication skills and competencies. On the other hand, he said that the committee must have a budget so that the supplies that have been established as mandatory by the Ministry of Health can be purchased. The committee must also document the actions to be carried out in the short and medium term and establish who are the people who must change their schedules or apply other adjustments. Companies must have a risk map regarding the exposure of the organization’s workers to know who is most at risk.

800 COPA WORKERS WELCOME TO VOLUNTARY WITHDRAWAL PLAN

1,500 Copa Airlines workers modified their working conditions, after the airline proposed a voluntary retirement program and the reduction of wages due to the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19) and the stoppage of operations in the airline industry. Pedro Heilbron, executive director of the company, revealed that 800 employees took advantage of the voluntary retirement plan that the company established for workers of retirement age or with more than 10 years of permanence. Additionally, another 700 employees opted for unpaid leave plans for a period of 6 or 12 months. Copa Airlines stopped its operations on March 22, after the Panamanian Government ordered the closure of Tocumen International Airport. The airline expects to resume operations on June 1, as long as restrictions on air transport are not extended.

Last Monday, the government announced the economic reopening plan and the airline sector was within block 4, which still does not have an estimated date to return to operation. During a call with Wall Street analysts, discussing first-quarter financial results, Heilbron commented that 90% of administrative staff voluntarily embraced a 50% pay cut. Between January and March, Copa made a profit of 74.3 million dollars, after registering revenues of 595.5 million dollars. In the first months of the year the impact of Covid-19 had not been felt. In the first quarter, for employee salaries and expenses, the company allocated 110.3 million dollars, which meant a decrease of 3% compared to the first quarter of last year. Cristóbal Sousa, general secretary of Airport Workers, commented that the Ministry of Labor approved the suspension of contracts, despite the fact that two of the five unions at the airline filed lists of violations before the measure adopted by the company. Rodolfo Mendieta, president of the Panamanian Union of Auxiliary Workers on Board, indicated that the company has not yet reported the number of personnel it will need to resume operations. Jaime Cohen, president of the Panamanian Union of Commercial Aviators, said that the airline has been calling pilots to make humanitarian flights, but without clarifying their employment status.

IN LESS THAN 15 DAYS THERE HAVE BEEN 32 HOMICIDES IN THE COUNTRY, DESPITE QUARANTINE FOR THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC

From January to April, there have been 183 victims of homicide nationwide, according to the Statistics Center of the Public Ministry.

The quarantine has not been an impediment for the criminal acts, murders and settling of accounts to decrease, in the last few hours there have been two deaths, one in Samaria, San Miguelito and the other in Nuevo Emperador, in Arraiján. While only yesterday there were 10 deaths in different parts of the country, detailed as follows: 3 of them in Los Santos; 4 in Vacamonte in Arraiján; another in El Chorrillo; one more in Plaza Amador and another in the Rincon Solano Oeste in La Chorrera. The situation is increasingly worrying, given that the health authorities have established specific quarantine measures, a situation that is not respected by criminals. According to statistics so far in May, in less than 15 days there have been 32 deaths, the same figure that closed the month of April.

‘ECONOMIC OVERVIEW GENERATED BY THE PANDEMIC IS WORSE THAN WAS EXPECTED’

The economic panorama for Panama and the world is not only still complicated due to the pandemic generated by COVID-19, but it is much more serious than expected a month ago, said economist Felipe Chapman.

The reality that is seen, he says, is getting closer to what happened for the great depression, which began in the United States in 1929 and lasted more than a decade with “peaks and valleys” in economic activities. Chapman said that prior to COVID-19, Panama’s unemployment level was approximately 120,000 people, to which is added the nearly 200,000 people who, due to the pandemic, still have their contracts suspended. That number measures the impact that the contraction caused by COVID-19 can have, he said.

He recommended ensuring that the financial system works properly, as do the payment systems, that they do not collapse and that there are macroeconomic conditions so that financial institutions are able to lend to the market when they want to inject working capital. The expert points out that what must be done so that the country is not affected more, is to be able to contain the pandemic and for that, it must be guaranteed that citizens who do not have the resources to support their families can stay at home, since that they leave the house not seeking death or illness, they do it out of necessity“.

He said that the return to normality and the time it may take, the evidence shows that austerity measures are taken at a given time when public and private investment is contracting and therefore the Gross Domestic Product and if they are blocked financial systems, the recovery will definitely be slower. But if the above does not happen and it is possible to have a good stimulus in terms of consumption and investment initially public and later private, with a system that is working and that can not only stay afloat during the pandemic, but can quickly return to the market to lend to micro, small and medium-sized companies, a growth trend can be seen for 2021, that is if the virus is successfully contained.

Brett’s comments:  In the immortal words of Bruce Banner, “So… this all seems… horrible!”  If you’ve seen the movie, you can hear him say it, in a paused, solemn “as a matter of fact” style that he was first coined with.  Personally, I think this is all gravely over exaggerated.  I almost didn’t post this report, but my goal is to provide balance in what I report.  I can’t be a lopsided reporter who only offers you what I like and not what I hate or disagree with.  Oh yes, this sucks.  Yes, it’s real and yes it’s scary.  But remember that the advantage of capitalism is that you have a growth opportunity if you learn to do it.  There will always be something that beats you down, gnaws at your passion and tempts you to give up.  Whether you do or not, that’s up to you.  I’ve hit rock bottom.  The advantage with rock bottom is that from there, the only way to go is up.  Even after that, I divorced my first wife about 15 years ago and practically gave her everything.  Mutual agreement, signed it, here, just take it.  She thought that she was getting the better end of the deal getting “everything”, but I took absolute peace and the chance for a calmer life in that agreement.  Besides, I knew that anything I created, anything I accumulated, I could build again.  And I did… 10 fold.  This pandemic has caused the richest and poorest of us lose.  Everyone lost, but everyone will also rebuild in this capitalist economy”.  Those who lose everything but their life or their health, should simply rejoice.  You’re not alone.

Why did almost all countries shut completely down, closing their businesses, schools, parks and beaches?  It probably wasn’t necessary.  BUT, it ended up being VERY necessary due to everyone’s lack of discipline. In the case of Panama, the government couldn’t just tell everyone to start wearing masks, use better hygiene, keep your distance from others, etc etc. because nobody would do it.  It’s as simple as that.  So, instead, phase 1, they take EVERYTHING away.  Then, phase 2, they slowly give it back.  They give us a taste of what it’s like to have nothing, what it’s like to be restricted and how much we would all prefer agreeing to extreme hygiene laws if that meant we could go back to “almost” the way things were.  The end result is really the same, but getting us to the end result meant taking drastic measures.  It’s nothing different from having strict parents dealing with unruly children.  “Alright, that’s IT!!  No more TV, no more Playstation, you’re all grounded until start taking me seriously!” (start the sounds of kids cry and doors slamming.)  But, that’s what happened here as well.

I’m fortunate to be surrounded by very smart, frugal, good people.  I decided to surround myself with this type of talent long ago, because I knew it’s what I needed to become a better person.  Following the guidelines that I’ve learned from them has helped me take a bit of my own knowledge, mixed with what they had to offer which ended up giving me even more confidence and a certain flare for foresight.  That may sound a bit pretentious, but it’s true.  As long as I’m not distracted, I can see the future.  The rum probably helps also as an enabler.  I can’t see the dates when anything will happen, but I can say what WILL happen.  Those of us in Panama and the rest of the world will all eventually become infected with the disease.  A small amount will be infected early on, but half of Panama will have gotten the Corona Virus prior to a vaccine becoming a viable method of treatment.  It won’t go full blown COVID19 on all of us, but half of Panama will get the ‘Rona in the blink of an eye.  There’s no reason to be frightened.  The advantage we have now is that there are many treatment methods that are working very well with more and more people.  Just the same, business will eventually open completely before the year is up and we’re all going to slowly go back to our old routines.  I don’t know when, but we will all just stop wearing masks and using antibacterial gel (which I can’t stand, BTW) and a year after that, we will all but have forgotten that this even happened.  Sanitization tunnels will be stacked up in Cerro Patacon right along side of any number of unused disposable facemasks.  In 2027, someone will ask you, “when did that darn pesky virus hit us; do you remember?”  And you’ll say, “I think it was 2020, but I can’t remember which month…”

CABINET APPROVES $ 350 MILLION CAF LOAN TO FINANCE BUDGET NEEDS

In order to finance “needs” of the 2020 General State Budget and mitigate the fiscal and economic contractions linked to Covid-19, the Cabinet Council approved a request for a loan of $ 350 million from the Andean Development Corporation (CAF). This approval was made this Tuesday, May 12, at the first in-person Cabinet Council held during the coronavirus quarantine. The loan contract will be between the Republic of Panama, which will be represented by the Ministry of Economy and Finance and the CAF. According to the State Communication Secretariat, this loan, freely available and quickly disbursed, will allow the government of President Laurentino Cortizo to advance in the measures of social and economic reactivation.

“In Panama we support immediate attention to the health system with non-reimbursable technical cooperation resources and a contingent credit line; and now we are assisting and complementing fiscal measures applied by the National Government to mitigate the economic, financial and social impacts, “said Luis Carranza Ugarte, CAF executive president.

MIVIOT ENABLES SINGLE FORMAT FOR MUTUAL LEASE PAYMENT AGREEMENT

A single format for the mutual agreement of rent fees payments between landlords and tenants, no longer paying for the health emergency arising from Covid-19, has been enabled by the Ministry of Housing and Land Management (Miviot). The single form for mutual agreement of payment of lease fees can be downloaded from the website www.miviot.gob.pa, to be filled out by the parties involved in leases, as a consensual peaceful solution to any inconvenience arising from the payment of monthly installments.

The document must be signed by tenants and lessors, subsequently taken to the Miviot in the presence of both parties, where the General Directorate of Leases will seal and register it for its validity, according to Law 93 of October 1973, which governs this matter. Failing that, it will be admitted by one of the parties only with notarized signatures, for legality.

“The document is the basis for landlords and tenants to formalize their agreements or arrangements for payment of royalties and bring them to register … what we want is that the parties can access the document and resolve their issues. If not, the General Directorate of Leases will be the one that will mediate if the case arises. There we will have to know the process and attend to it,” said the Minister of Housing, Inés Samudio.

He explained that this mutual agreement contemplates five clauses, among them the specific and detailed location of the real estate, as well as the tenant’s oath for the economic affectation derived from the sanitary crisis that led him to not be able to fulfill his commitments. Likewise, both parties agree that the lessee agrees to update himself on the lease fees stopped paying as a result of the health emergency, within the term of two years, making monthly payments in favor of the lessor for a sum established until the cancellation of the debt, indicating the amount owed.

“The rule is clear, the tenant financially affected by the coronavirus health crisis must prove this and then assume the fees due, while the landlord cannot evict those affected at this time, but the one that is charging and can assume his commitments and fail to comply, he will be penalized ”,emphasized Samudio.

He added that the enabling of this format applies to both residential and commercial, industrial, professional and educational leases, and is framed within Executive Decree No. 145 of May 2020 that suspends the eviction and launch processes in the country, and contemplates mutual agreement as a measure set between both parties to resolve any discrepancy or conflict that may arise from the payment of the lease.

CSS: FIBROSIS, A POSSIBLE SEQUEL IN RECOVERED PATIENTS FROM COVID-19

The new coronavirus has claimed the lives of millions of people worldwide, and has directly affected the health and economy of hundreds of citizens in Panama and around the world.

Brett’s interjection:  No, it hasn’t claimed the lives of millions of people (yet).  So far, 298,174 have died worldwide.  Please continue, Mr incorrect article.

According to the pulmonologist Reynaldo Chandler of the Social Security Fund (CSS), that there is “a small group of patients” who, despite having overcome the disease, may have small scars in their lungs known as fibrosis, and that change in the structure of the lung, it could remain as a possible sequel to COVID-19.

He added that patients who experience severe infections, such as pneumonia, along with prolonged inflammation and chronic diseases, may be more at risk of other diseases.

“Until now, the most affected organ is the lung, but at the same time, important consequences of the infection have been observed, which compromise the heart, developing inflammations in some of its tissues,” explained Dr.Chandler.

He explained that the virus, by attacking elements of the central nervous system, affects other organs such as the kidney and liver.

“We have observed in patients recovered from COVID-19, that after several weeks they are left with some degree of functional limitation; it seems that the lung is deformed and becomes more rigid, and that generates in the person, a need to breathe deeper ” added the pulmonologist after mentioning that this causes the person to have a lower capacity to carry out some physical activity.

ENDNOTES

I like music.  I like ALL music.  You could put some of the most extreme, unexpected farfetched, culturally distanced music on and I’ll listen to it.  Of course, all music has it’s moment and the rhythm should affect you in the direction that you want to go.  Those who listen to sad songs, don’t do it because they’re sad, they do it because they want to be sadder.  They want to embrace their own personal suck!  If I’m exercising, I have a pre-working mix that’s very intense and I don’t recommend it for the light of heart;  ZZ Top, ACDC, Ozzy Osbourne, Rage Against the Machine, Beastie Boys, etc.

If I want to make a dinner that I’ve prepared perfect, I turn on the AC and switch my list to Bossa Nova.  Tonight I set my selection to “random” and let Apple Music decide for me and I was not disappointed.  I did have to take a pause from writing at one point when Chayenne came on.  The English-only crowd really is missing out on the lyrics of many very amazing and poetic Latinos with their passionate, freedom-laced and experimental masterpieces.  Some lyrics just do not translate to anything meaningful into English.  As an example, you can’t feel the music created by Juan Luis Guerra and just translate his words back to English.  It goes from beautiful to stupid in just a few seconds.

He starts off great with:

  • Tengo un corazón Mutilado de esperanza y de razón Tengo un corazón Que madruga adonde quiera

Which in English is:

  • I have a mutilated heart of hope and reason
  • I have a heart that rises wherever I want

(Ok, a little odd, but then he continues…)

  • Quisiera ser un pez
  • Para tocar mi nariz en tu pecera
  • Y hacer burbujas de amor
  • Por donde quiera
  • Oh-oh-oh pasar la noche en vela
  • Mojado en ti

(Oh man, you have no idea how amazing these words sound!)

But in English:

  • I would like to be a fish to touch my nose in your fish tank
  • And make love bubbles wherever you want
  • Oh-oh-oh stay up all night, wet in you

Yeah, I might actually call the authorities on this guy and I’d definitely check the sex offender database just to be safe.

But my brother Chayanne, oh wow, this guy has every Latin Woman in the palm of his hands.  And if any “Latina” tells you that she doesn’t like him, well that just means that she got dumped while one of his songs was playing… …because this guy is fricken amazing!  His chiseled features, powerful lyrics, angelical voice… …ok, I’ll stop there, but if you don’t like this guy and his music, just unfriend me.  Hahaha

It’s long so I’m leaving out the Spanish, but this is the translation to English and the link to his video.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMrN1W4ryoE

  • I’ve tried almost everything to convince you As the world crumbles everything here at my feet
  • As I learn from this loneliness that I don’t know
  • I wonder again maybe if I will survive
  • Because without you I have a cold and empty conscience
  • Because without you I have realized, my love, that I will not be reborn
  • Because I have gone beyond the limit of desolation
  • My body, my mind and my soul are no longer connected
  • And I swear I would leave everything for you to stay
  • My creed, my past, my religion
  • After all, you are breaking our ties
  • And you break this heart to pieces
  • I would also leave my own skin, my name, my strength, my own life
  • And what difference does it make if you take all my faith
  • What wouldn’t I leave?
  • The good things about you hurt more when you’re away
  • I know it’s too late to fix this
  • What good is it for me to use ten thousand excuses when I definitely know that you’re leaving now
  • Although I repeat over and over that I am dying day by day
  • Although you are also dying you will not forgive me
  • Although without you I have reached the limit of desolation and my body, my mind and my soul have no connection
  • I keep dying I would leave everything for you to stay
  • My creed my past my religion
  • After all you are breaking our ties and tearing this heart apart
  • I would also leave my own skin, my name, my strength, my own life
  • And what difference does it make if you take all my faith
  • What wouldn’t I leave?

And on that note,

Stay safe…  Stay healthy…  And by all means STAY HOME!!…
