If you’ve ever had the pleasure to take COPA Flight CM0470 out of Panama, you know how 5 hours and 40 minutes of sitting coach can actually be pleasant. There’s a natural vibe of niceties as everyone aboard has a sincere smile on their face. If we were heading to Chicago, I’d worry that they were up to something. But no, no sir, not this time, this time we’re going to Toronto.

My first trip to Canada was surprisingly enough to Niagra Falls just to slip over to a fine family establishment called “Mints”. I mean, I wouldn’t take MY family there, but the girls that worked there had families and I was intent on supporting them. Crossing from Buffalo to Niagra with Army buddies Aroon “T.C.” Bhardwaj and Doug Goble just for an evening and then trying to find ways of “sneaking across the border” back to America without getting in trouble; 28 years later, I now know that Canadian officials were probably just glad to get rid of us. But a trip to Toronto has something even more remarkable than Niagra, something more special than asking a gal who just stole your sunglasses to dance again to the Lenny Kravitz version of “American Woman” in Canada nonetheless.

Toronto is synonymous with “peace”. Toronto, Canada is that one place I know of that can only be defined as the nicest place in the world to die (I mean, if you could die, because of, you know, free health care and stuff).

Envision if you will, your flight lands at Toronto Pearson International Airport. As the plane taxis towards your gate, you’re shocked as no one stands before arriving the gate nor do they do so prior to the “Fasten Seatbelt” light being turned off. As a matter of fact, when the pilot does turn it off, he first lulls us in his serene dipthong-laden angel-speak, “OK folks, we made it, sorry if that landing was a little bumpy, eh. I’m gonna turn that darn light off in just a moment.” There’s a sublime pause of perhaps 5 more seconds, then everyone slowly exits their seats in choreographed precision. Throughout the plane you hear utterances of warmth and decency, “Oh sorry, eh”, “Excuse me sir”, “Oh no, you go first, ma’am”. Travel can certainly be stressful, but not on a flight to Canada. There’ll be no kerfuffles here, I assure you. Everyone exits the plane donning their toques to bear the brunt of Canada’s brisk air.

In Panama, if you head to the interior, it’s mandatory to stop at Quesos Chela for Chicheme. Arriving Toronto, it’s equally mandatory to stop at Timmies for a Double-double. Once that beverage is in your hands, everything just becomes right with the world. You close your eyes… the soft hum of true humanity flows all around you, righteously caressing your soul. It, too, separates from your body ever so momentarily, acknowledging the very fabric of God’s perfection that is Canada.

I come back around and enter my taxi in a state of near-bliss. My driver asks me, “How was your flight, sir?”

“It was great, thank you.”

“Is there anything I can do to make your arrival any more perfect?”, he’ll ask me.

“Yes sir. Take me to your finest Poutine.”

“Oh, I have the best place. I just need to Hang a Larry up ahead and we’re there. Won’t cost you but a few Loonies and Toonies.”

Yep, everything was right in the world.

HAPPY CANADA DAY!

Yoli’s Summary

Laurentino Cortizo Cohen is celebrating his first year in power today with a Panama – like the rest of the world – drowned by the Covid-19 pandemic and threats from sectors seeking to pressure and discredit his administration with corruption accusations; different groups demonstrated today.

POLICE DIRECTOR ADMITS THAT SECURITY IN THE AN IS STRENGTHENED; PROTEST AGAINST CORTIZO AND CARRIZO

Protesters also oppose Castillero’s reelection.

The National Assembly woke up besieged by special agents of the National Police. The reason could be due to announcements of possible citizen protests.

The security fence begins from the perimeter where the Dinasty warehouse is located. In plenary session and sitting in their seats are, for the most part, the deputies of the bench-based office worker of the Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD), deputies of the independent bench, of the Liberal Republican Nationalist Movement (Molirena) and some of the Panameñista Party. Few representatives of Democratic Change have entered the plenary.

Security and surveillance operation in the National Assembly area.

After what was agreed on June 18 at Parrillada Jimmy’s, the pro-government party of the PRD and its ally Molirena will re-elect Marcos Castillero in the Legislative presidency.

However, the independent bench that has five deputies has decided to go with its own candidate for the presidency of the Assembly. Although legislative sources talk that some deputies from that party would support Castillero.

The director of the National Police, Jorge Miranda, upon arrival at the premises of the National Assembly, indicated that the operation was mounted because the integrity of President Laurentino Cortizo and the deputies could be endangered.

Miranda explained that a security operation with two rings was designed, but did not want to specify how many agents are in the sector.

The director of the National Police also said that people are within their rights, but that they must do so following the provisions of the National Constitution.

“There are several factors at play here, there are people who have a legitimate right to demonstrate, but there may also be agitators who seek to destabilize and try to stain the integrity of the demonstration,” said Miranda.

PROTESTS

A protest was organized on the Transistmic road in front of the University of Panama for the management of the Cortizo administration of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Also, through social networks a protest was called for this Wednesday after 10:00 a.m. against President Cortizo’s speech and his year in office.

Panamanians were asked to play whistles and pots during Cortizo’s speech to the National Assembly.

A protest was also organized against the vice president and minister of the Presidency, José Gabriel Carrizo, and Cortizo in the vicinity of the National Assembly.

University students, trade unionists, groups that defend human rights, among others, participate in these demonstrations.

Another point that the protesters oppose is the re-election of the deputy Marcos Castillero as president of the National Assembly.

BRETT’S TIDBIT ON PRESIDENT CORTIZO’S SPEECH TODAY:

Being a foreigner, I avoid bashing the leader in ANY country.  One time arriving Venezuela via the Simon Bolivar International Airport in Maiquetia, I was stopped and questioned as usual.  I had a work visa and everything was in order as I toted my polygraph instrument with me as carry-on.  I passed both Customs and Immigration and exited the terminal in search of “some guy with a sign”.  I spotted him from a distance.  He was the same guy that always picked me up, lucky for me.  But another guy with a bright red shirt emanating a certain sense of ego-driven annoyance, had other plans for me that fine evening.  Ah, but what he didn’t know was that I was prepared.  It wasn’t the first time that I’d been “approached”.  He went through his list of questions that I was already too familiar with.  “Where are you coming from?”  “What part of the USA are you from?”  “Who are you visiting?”  “Why are you really here?” and others.  The answers were the same as well.  Panama.  Wisconsin.  Copa Airlines head office.  To conduct polygraphs; my driver over there can attest to that.  But then he asked me a new question, “Who is the greatest president?”  It threw me for a moment, but I knew what he was looking for, “Presidente Chavez por supuesto!”, I retorted incisively.  I was free to go.

In Panama, one would be wise to do the same.  We have more wiggle room in Panama with our words, but Panama is a small country and haters get on lists whether we like to believe it or not.  That being said, I truly enjoyed President Cortizo’s well-versed speech today.  It was complete and full of insight to Panama’s future.  He was upfront and not the least bit provocative in his explanation on all-things Coronavirus.  In honor of his first year in office, we look forward to the remaining 4 years.  I’ve taken the time to translate, although google-assisted, the transcript to his speech.  You may peruse the extravaganza of brilliance of this emotional homily via the following link:

REJECTION OF IDB PROPOSAL TO INCREASE TAXES IN PANAMA

There are positions that oppose the recommendation of the Inter-American Development Bank for Panama to apply tax reforms when the crisis caused by the coronavirus is overcome. A few weeks ago, the Inter-American Development Bank recommended that Panama increase taxes.

He put forward a series of proposals to control tax evasion and improve government revenue. It included the modification of tax rates and the introduction of a solidary rate to officials, according to their salary.

The IDB suggested doing so as the economy reactivated.

“If you ask me what is the worst time in history to raise taxes, I will tell you that this is it. The increase in taxes slows down the economy because it reduces purchasing power. If you want to end the middle class, if you want to end small and medium-sized businesses, this is a good time to increase taxes. Here what is needed is a great plan for public works in infrastructure, since construction generates 18% of the gross domestic product, creating demand, then increasing the capacity of companies,” said the economist, Felipe Argote.

In March, April and May the government expected a collection in current income of about $ 1.802 million, but in those three months only about 921 million were obtained. This weekend the economist Guillermo Chapman said that he does not like the idea of increasing taxes, but it is necessary and that it should be done gradually.

Other economists disagree.

“It is not the time to talk, in the short term, about these tax issues. At the international level, countries and international organizations are talking about serious, committed and participative indebtedness. We are talking about the need for itself, increasing the debt, but together with a government, economic, and health plan that is focused on people, public health, and people’s well-being,” said Javier Stanziola, economist CIEPS.

The recommendations of the Inter-American Development Bank are part of a study made by the agency and contained in the ALC document Covid-19: Challenges and opportunities for countries in Central America, Haiti, Mexico, Panama and the Dominican Republic.

CURFEW WILL CONTINUE DURING THE WEEKENDS OF JULY; RT TOO HIGH

Circulation by gender and ID number are maintained.

Citizen mobility in the provinces of Panama and Panama West will continue to be suspended on the weekends of July due to the increase in new cases of the Covid-19 disease.

This was reported by the Ministry of Health (Minsa) in a statement indicating that they modified Resolution 492 of June 6, in which the curfew was established starting on Saturdays at 5:00 p.m. and until 5:00 a.m. of Monday.

The circulation by gender and ID number is also maintained.

Health authorities reported that the effective reproductive number (Rt) of the epidemiological week from June 21 to 27 was 1.42 due to the speed at which the virus is spreading by community transmission in the Metropolitan health regions of San Miguelito and Panamá Oeste.

The Rt registered a slight decrease compared to the epidemiological week that runs from June 14 to 20, which marked 1.63.

The Rt is one of the epidemiological indicators that takes weeks without being at 1 or less than 1, which is the ideal value. The last week it was below 1 was in May. Meanwhile, the country reached 33,550 accumulated cases and 631 deaths.

THOSE WHO SURVIVE THE ICU COULD TAKE UP TO 35 DAYS

In the Intensive Care Units, there is a fight by intensive care doctors to save the greatest number of people who are affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

Between 20 and 35 days is the time that a patient is kept with mechanical ventilation inside an intensive care room with COVID-19 in Panama. Dr. Eduardo Prado, head of Teaching of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Santo Tomás Hospital, explained that in the fight they are maintaining to save lives they have had patients with up to 35 days sedated.

“When the patient is in this situation he does not perceive what is happening around him, the problem comes later when you wake him up and intubate him and talk to him and inform him that you were 35 in mechanical ventilation, many do not believe you,” said the doctor.

Prado added that this is a sad situation for the patient and his relatives because the consequences that he leaves behind in an ICU ward are very harsh.

“The sequelae left by mechanical ventilation by the instance in an Intensive Care Unit is not negligible, many of these patients are left with neuropathy, extreme muscle weakness, impossibility even to get up, but fortunately that recovers, not immediately, but they need rehabilitation therapy, whether physical or vocational,” he said.

There are currently 32 patients in the intensive care unit of the Santo Tomás Hospital, of which 31 are on mechanical ventilation.

As for how a person’s reaction is after so many days of being sedated, the doctor pointed out that it varies in each case.

“The reaction of a patient who wakes up after being on mechanical ventilation for a long time varies. Once we had a case of a man who reacted very calmly and entertainingly, I remember very well that we were talking about soccer and the teammate mentioned a team of the Spanish League, and the patient indicated: this is my team in Spain. In the gentleman it seems that the time he was sedated had not passed. “

Contrary to this, Prado pointed out that there are other patients who wake up somewhat agitated, confused, product of the days they have been sedated and the same treatment applied.

“Many of the people do not believe that they have been sedated for so many days, many believe that they had fallen asleep one day and woke up the next,” said the doctor.

He added that a person’s reaction to waking up is different in each case. Prado indicated that the lessons that this virus has left them is that teamwork pays off, since today more than ever they depend on their colleagues to get ahead, in addition to updating is essential.

ENDNOTES

Hey, it may very well be that you were not prepared for Canada Day, but now with the 4th of July just around the corner, you really need to stock up on quality beer. And by quality, I’m obviously referring to the refreshing taste of Belgian Beer. And wow, what a coincidence, I happen to know this really great guy who happens to be selling said beer (me). He’s been doing it since the end of last year (it’s me) but because of this pesky virus, distribution of his (mine, it’s me, ok?) beer has been futile. From what he’s told me (I talk to myself), he’s down to just 20 cases and would really like to unload them as fast as possible. (Like NOW!) Free delivery anywhere in the city. If you buy enough, I’ll, oops, I mean he (no actually, me) may just give you some free product glassware as added value. The Tripel Karmeliet glasses are actually quite amazing. (As supplies last.)

Stay safe… Stay healthy… And by all means (unless you’re downstairs receiving your 5 cases of heavenly ale)STAY HOME!!…
