There’s a lot of hype about another full quarantine looming over Panama.

At the end of last week, the Panamanian Society of Internal Medicine recommended that the Government establish a total and mandatory quarantine in the provinces of Panama, Panama West, and Chiriquí for at least 15 days to stop the spread of the virus in these places. They didn’t say “for 15 days”, they said “for AT LEAST 15 days”. (Ridiculous amounts of toilet paper start flying off the shelves again in 3… 2… 1…)

This is just a recommendation, but it’s a solid recommendation from those humans that are on the front line of this ever-worsening battle against a virus, compounded by our newly-formed lackluster gaggle of medical advisors.  Of course, a large amount of the people has lost faith in a good many of our local leaders, and have essentially just given up trying to follow the rules.  We can see that in the ever-increasing amount of people detained day after day.

In response to the request from the Panamanian Society of Internal Medicine, the Health Minister, Luis Francisco Sucre, affirmed that nothing is ruled out, that this has been being analyzed, but that in order to make a decision like this one must prepare the Government and the population.

“We do not rule out any proposal. Being in a situation as difficult as the one we have in the capital and West Panama …, we are evaluating the proposal,” said Sucre.

Then, on Sunday evening, President Laurentino “Nito” Cortizo came out from a meeting with his top advisors saying that they’re taking in to consideration several elements and will have an answer for us on Monday… no, wait, maybe on Tuesday… …or Wednesday or sometime this week.  Geez, nothing like an over abundance of certainty to help us sleep at night.

Then, like clockwork, I received several chats this morning asking for clarity.  Noone was certain what was going to happen, except for those who totally misunderstood the winks and nudges from our government, mistakenly thinking that we already started our 15-day quarantine today.

I guess the bottom line is that everything remains status quo until further notice.  Or as they’ve been calling this the “New Normal”, we can call our status the “New Statu”.  Of course, someone had to post their ideas in a format that seemed logical and semi-official, with the intent of misleading everyone.  Here’s the fake news of the moment:

It reads:

  1. Total Quarantine for 15 days starting Sunday, July 19. Everything closed, banks, supermarkets, no delivery, no taxis.
  2. $300 bond starting July 13.
  3. COVID test to every employee of every commercial business that is open during the week of July 13 to July 17.
  4. Reopen Veneto Hotel (Presently closed) to house patients with COVID (301 rooms)
  5. Disinfect during the week of preparation for quarantine (13-17 July after 7PM) from public places, bus stops, metro stations, bridges, parked cars.

There are any number of reasons why this was obviously fake news to me when it came out. First of all the banks won’t close. That would be a disaster. Secondly, and not necessarily in any particular order, the Veneto Hotel is not anywhere near close to being inhabited and the amount of money that would need to be invested to clean it and have it ready is monstrous. You’d be better off building another temporary medical facility of 300 beds or just commandeer any one of the many hotels that are not operating due to the present restrictions.

The government would not be able to pay anyone a bond of $300 in such a short amount of time.

It’s not to say that these are BAD ideas, they’re just not fathomable ideas in such a short amount of time.

What will probably happen? I do think that the government is going to make life stricter than it has been so far. And seeing as I’m on a Latin kick today for some odd reason, we’ll call this the “New severiora iudicia” (new stricter regulations). President Cortizo will probably come back to us on Wednesday and tell us that as of next week, we’re going to batten down the hatches even more than we’ve had to so far.

The next major question I’ve been hearing, “Why are we going to do more quarantine, if the quarantine that we’ve been doing hasn’t worked for crap so far?”. Actually, quarantine is working, for those who are actually doing quarantine. A good friend of mine, Joseph Gayle said to me recently, that we just need to cut off the virus’ mode of transportation. It can only go from person to person. If we cut that off, the virus will die off. The virus came to Panama via just a few people. But, all of us already know this. I’ve been as quarantined as anyone can get. If I have to leave out, I take the measured precautions. No one in my house has gotten the virus so far. I even have the Serology test to prove it. The problem with this spread is due to those groups who refuse to take the suggested precautions.

That being said, I know that there are thousands of people out there who need to get out and make money, even clandestinely as they’re accustomed. The government needs to identify who they are and make sure they’re taken care of while we get through a serious 30-day quarantine. That way, the virus reaches fruition within their hosts, but aren’t able to make the jump to more hosts. If Panama would have done this from the beginning, we would already have been done with this two months ago. Now, we’ve been in this state of limbo for so long, it’s hard to fathom having to do this for another 6 months or so. If we continue with this same methodology, we’re going to be living like we are now for the next 6 months, at least.

The other option is to let everyone get sick and get it over with.  That’s unreasonably haphazard, as the hospitals and medical staff wouldn’t be able to handle everyone.  I’ve already brought that point up before.  Panamanian hospitals are already saturated with COVID patients as it is.  My previous thought to habilitate the empty hotels and turn then into hospitals is impossible if we don’t have the medical staff to support it.  And, we would still need nearly a half a million to a million beds in just in the first 3-4 months.

This is anything but easy.  I’m sure every single government official has thought at one time or another, “Why in the hell did I have to win that election?”.  Most politicians are in it for the cake walk 4-hour days debating about unimportant events and divvying up authorized funds.  None of them could have possibly fathomed being in this mess and actually having to solve the problems that come along with the pandemic.

I’ll keep my ear to the ground and give further updates on what Nito says, when he says it.

TOP NEWS and TIDBITS

Yoli’s Summary

The coronavirus damages not only the lungs, but also the kidneys, liver, heart, brain and nervous system, skin and gastrointestinal tract, a medical team said Friday in a review of reports on patients with covid-19.

The team at Columbia University Irving Medical Center in New York City, one of the hospitals that treated the most patients in the spring, went through their own experiences and compiled reports from other medical teams around the world.

His full picture shows that the coronavirus attacks virtually every major system in the human body, directly affecting the organs and causing the blood to clot, the heart to lose its healthy rhythm, the kidneys to lose blood and protein, and the skin to erupt into rashes. It causes headaches, dizziness, muscle aches, stomach pain, and other symptoms along with classic respiratory complications like cough and fever.

“Clinicians should think of covid-19 as a multi-system disease,” said Dr. Aakriti Gupta, a Columbia cardiology researcher who worked on the review, in a statement. “There is a lot of news about clotting, but it’s also important to understand that a substantial proportion of these patients suffer from kidney, heart and brain damage, and doctors must treat those conditions along with respiratory disease.”

Coronavirus infection also activates the immune system. Part of that response includes the production of inflammatory proteins called cytokines. This inflammation can damage cells and organs, and the so-called cytokine storm is one of the causes of severe symptoms.

The effects of blood clotting appear to be caused by several different mechanisms: direct damage to the cells that line the blood vessels and interference with the various coagulation mechanisms in the blood itself. The low oxygen level in the blood caused by pneumonia may make the blood more likely to clot, the researchers say.

These clots can cause strokes and heart attacks, or they can lodge in the lungs or legs. They cover the kidneys and interfere with the dialysis treatments necessary for the most affected patients.

Damage to the pancreas can worsen diabetes, and patients with diabetes have been shown to be at the highest risk for severe disease and death from coronavirus.

The virus can directly harm the brain, but some of the neurological effects probably come from treatment. “Patients with covid-19 can be intubated for two to three weeks; a quarter requires fans for 30 days or more, “said Gupta.

There is some good news.

“Gastrointestinal symptoms may be associated with longer disease duration, but have not been associated with increased mortality,” the researchers wrote. Many of the effects on the skin, such as rashes and swollen, purple “covid toes,” also go away on their own.

PRESENT DRAFT LAW FOR TEMPORARY MEASURES TO PROTECT JOBS BY PANDEMIC

The Minister of Labor and Labor Development, Doris Zapata, presented this Monday, July 13, a bill that establishes temporary measures to protect employment in companies affected by COVID-19.

According to the explanatory memorandum, the project establishes the possibility that contracts suspended due to the pandemic can maintain this condition until December 31, 2020.

At the same time, it regulates the payment of the second and third installment of the thirteenth month to the workers affected by this suspension of contracts and orders that the gradual return and partial reinstatement of the suspended workers cannot be used as a means of discrimination against no nature, under penalty of a fine of up to five thousand balboas.

It is established that the termination of the employment relationship by mutual agreement must be signed before the administrative labor authorities; otherwise, said termination will be considered void and the worker may request her reinstatement.

It is also regulated that workers reinstated after the suspension of their contracts, who are dismissed in the three months following their return to employment, must be paid one hundred percent of their benefits at the same time that they are dismissed and, in addition, terms are established for the cancellation of the final benefits at the end of the employment relationship, after the three months counted from the reinstatement of the worker to his job.

On the payment of the second installment of the thirteenth month of the year 2020, it will be paid by the employer, thus:1. Workers who have not worked between April 15 and August 15, 2020, due to the suspension of the effects of their contracts, will have the right to receive the sum of fifty balboas (B / .50.00).2. Workers who have partially worked between April 15 and August 15, 2020, due to the suspension of the effects of their contracts, will be paid proportionally the amount that corresponds to them or the sum of fifty balboas (B /.50.00), whichever is more favorable to the worker.3. Workers who have worked continuously from April 15 to August 15, 2020, will receive payment for the second installment of the thirteenth month corresponding to the year 2020, according to Cabinet Decree 221 of November 18, 1971. The payment of the sum resulting from the application of numerals 1 and 2 of this article, may be canceled by the employer, paying half on August 15 and the other half on September 15, 2020.

WHO” ALERT THAT PANDEMIC CONTINUES TO ADVANCE DUE TO THE ERRORS OF MANY GOVERNMENTS

The World Health Organization (WHO) warned today that the COVID-19 pandemic, whose epicenter is currently in America, may “get worse” if governments do not take more serious measures to combat it, after announcing a new record. of daily cases, more than 230,000 worldwide.

“The virus remains our number one public enemy, but the actions of many governments and citizens do not reflect it,” the director general of the Geneva-based body, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, warned in his speech today.

Brazil and the US lead the accelerated growth

The head of the WHO did not allude to any specific government in his criticism, although he did indicate that half of the current new daily cases are registered in two countries (Brazil, which reported about 45,000 in the last 24 hours, and the United States, with more than 60,000).

“Too many countries are going in the wrong direction,” said Tedros, who predicted that “if basic rules are not followed, the only direction this pandemic is going is for the worse.”

The WHO director-general further warned that “confusing messages from some leaders are undermining a vital tool for any health response, such as trust.”

Tedros avoided at all times referring directly to the United States, at a time of strong tensions between Washington and the WHO, due to the announcement by the Government of US President Donald Trump that his country will abandon it next year, although the person most responsible for The organization assured today that they have not yet received a “formal letter” to that effect. ‘

Following China’s temporary regulations for foreign visitors, the two experts – an animal disease specialist and an epidemiologist whose identities have not come out – have started their contacts with Chinese colleagues, but remotely, he explained.

America remains an epicenter

Regarding the pandemic, Tedros recalled that the epicenter is currently concentrated in America, where more than half of the planet’s cases are registered, and that many of its countries are at times of intense transmission of the coronavirus, as well as others in Africa and southern Asia.

Despite pessimistic statements, Tedros said that “it is never too late to put the virus under control, even in cases of exponential infections”, taking into account the examples of other countries that avoided community transmission (many in East Asia) or reduced infections. , as in Europe.

He also highlighted that the number of daily deaths remains stable (5,000 daily for two months, despite the increasing increase in new cases).

The Executive Director of the WHO for Health Emergencies, the Irishman Mike Ryan, expressed in similar terms, who stated that “it is not realistic to eradicate this virus in the coming months, or to magically have a perfect vaccine.”

Sprouts in Europe are also a concern

Regarding the localized outbreaks that are occurring in countries that have already passed the first great peak of the pandemic, including Spain, the head of the Department of Emerging Diseases of the WHO, María Van Kerkhove, stressed that the affected places may face them with the experience of past months.

“Those countries have built a health infrastructure that allows them to act quickly in outbreaks” when it comes to carrying out tests, isolating affected people, tracing contacts and quarantining them, he said.

By acting quickly, a return to quarantine at the national level can be avoided, the US expert concluded.

Those who are in quarantine, according to Dr. Van Kerkhoveherself, are the two WHO experts who have traveled to China to start investigations into the animal origin of the coronavirus.

Former Minister of Health refers to the proposal for a total quarantine. Atenógenes Rodríguez

While in the rooms there is 60% occupancy.

“We have had to reinvent ourselves and open spaces to give COVID positive patients the opportunity because we cannot put COVID positive patients in the same area as a patient who comes with other pathologies,” said Terán.

In addition, he indicated that in the private system it has limitations in the transfer of positive patients, since for lack of beds they must stay up to 10 hours in the emergency room.

Doctors in public hospitals are reporting that the system is about to collapse due to an exponential growth in COVID-19 cases in recent weeks.

The Ministry has enabled places such as the Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and the Panama Solidarity Hospital to house patients with the virus.

END NOTES

I took the plunge recently and decided to review possibilities in automating my house.  I mean, I’m here all the time anyways, right?  I might as well make being here easier.  I come to find out that it’s not as expensive as most people would think.  There are many ways to do this, but I took the “Amazon Echo” with Alexa route.  The reviews online really weighed towards this route and the advantages were more than I thought were possible.

The Amazon Echo costs $69.00 right now as they’re on sale.  The Echo Dot costs $39.00 at normal price.  I wanted to control the lighting in the house better as we all have a poor tendency to leave lights on for hours on end and have even been the culprit to leave the AC on in a room that we don’t use at night, like the living room or our in-house office.  A review of some of the light switches available, I noted that a set of 4 switches only costs about $50.00.  A small home will have 12 switches at most.  So, for $200.00, WIFI and a bit of electrical knowledge, you can turn your small home into a modern, automated awesome-sauce pad.

I am disappointed in one aspect of it however.  I love Music and really thought this was going to work as designed.  I use Apple Music and Amazon stated that the system would be compatible with Apple Music.  It is, actually, but not in Panama.  My next attempt was to sync it up instead with Amazon Music.  It already uses a free version, but if I wanted to add my tunes and playlists, I needed to make further adjustments, but that didn’t work either because it wasn’t compatible with my iTunes.  (Right now, I honestly don’t know if I have the USA iTunes or the Panama iTunes, but that was the problem.)  Finally, I thought to settle with Spotify.  I hate the commercial breaks that Spotify has, but I saw an option that allowed me to sync up Spotify and then I could instruct Alexa to play my Spotify playlist.  It didn’t work.  Troubleshooting, lead me to online groups talking about how thousands of people have had a lot of problems with this as well.  It looks like music isn’t going to be an easy thing for me to work in to the system just yet.

But the plus sides are pretty amazing, especially the routines you can program Alexa to do for you. Via voice command, I can now tell Alexa, “Alexa, Initiate Protocol 61” and all of the lights in the house with shut off and the security lights outside the house go on. Once she does that, she’s programmed to say, “That’s a wise choice Brett. Stay safe!” Lol. I’m not tired of it yet, but once I find something even cooler for her to say, I’ll change it. What does “Protocol 61” mean? Absolutely nothing, but if I’m ever in a movie I hope I get to read that line. “Captain, Initiate Protocol 61, NOW!”

We let the boys sleep a bit longer than us.  My routine starts with me telling Alexa, “Alexa, Start my Day” and she turns on our bedroom lights, tells my wife “Sayira you look amazing with your hair like that.  I wouldn’t change a thing.”  Then she gives me updates on the Green Bay Packers, tells me the date and time and if I have anything scheduled early that morning, she lets me know.  Then I shower while she plays her random selection of music (but not my playlist, Ggrrr).  I head to the office and get going on emails.  The boys need to be up by 7:40a.m. for them to both start their classes at 8:00a.m.  Instead of going all the way back across the house, I tell Alexa from my phone, “Alexa, Wake the Boys up”.  She then turns on their lights, gives them an inspirational quote to start their day and plays some soft morning music.  Lately, however, Brandon has been quick to say, “Alexa Stop.  Alexa Turn off the kids’ lights” and then promptly goes back to sleep.  I’m looking for an override to that.

Wake up call

The amount of “skills” that you can teach or apply to Alexa are bountiful as well and we’re just getting started.  We can manage the house Roomba (iRobot) by voice now, which is unnecessary, but it’s still fun that we can do it.

We could also eventually control the air conditioning, appliances, bread maker, coffee machine, or whatever else we want to invest in and put on a credit card. Now’s not the time for us to spend on that however.

Oh, and I almost forgot, she has a security feature about her as well. When you leave the home, you can have lights programmed to turn on at certain times as well as anything else you would want to turn on to make pretend that someone was at home. If you have a security alarm, especially ADT or Ring, it can connect in to that as well. But the Echo is also designed to “stand guard” on its own by listening for certain out-of-place noises such as glass breakage and certain home and fire alarms. Once you set it up, once you leave, you just say “Alexa Guard” and she takes care of it for you.

The more I learn about this, the more I want to tell my friends about it. Let me know if you want to know more about this and I’ll help you set it up. Except the music. Darn it.

Stay safe…  Stay healthy…  And by all means (unless you run out to buy more toilet paper for the probable full quarantine) STAY HOME!!…
