As much as I’d love to put together another glorious introduction, riddled with over-exaggerated accounts of family follies and fickle furies, I’m swamped.

The good news is that we’ve been working on making our reports visible to a wider audience, seeing as several of our viewers have reported issues with the more recent newsletters.  The problem was the core design of our website which had oversized images and photos, causing the pages to reload for some of you.  With any luck, this new report will be hassle-free and easier to read.

Have a great read and send me some feedback.  Let me know if this is something you still want to receive and if the content is still on target and to your liking.  If there’s anything else that you’d like us to report on, please let me know.  In the meantime, just sit back and enjoy the read as we appreciate together another day in paradise.

TOP NEWS and TIDBITS:

Yoli’s Wisdom:

While most people by this point are familiar with the range of common COVID-19 symptoms, researchers over the past few months have observed several rare symptoms that can sometimes manifest early after exposure to the coronavirus.

Up to this point, Dr. Andrew Chan, a Harvard professor and infectious disease expert, has noted that rash, skin bumps, and inflammation on the fingers and toes can sometimes be an early indication of a COVID-19 infection. Chan came to this conclusion by carefully looking at data obtained from the COVID Symptom Study conducted in the UK last year, which included hundreds of thousands of patients.

According to Chan, the types of skin conditions seen in COVID-19 patients can be divided into three distinct categories.

The first is a hive-like rash that presents with bumps on the skin. The bumps are said to be itchy and can come and go and reappear within a few hours. The second type of rash is similar to what you might see with chickenpox and presents as masses of small, itchy bumps anywhere on the body. The third condition manifests as discoloration of the fingers or toes, a symptom that has come to be categorized as COVID fingers.

Regarding the last symptom, the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) adds:

The condition can develop in the toes, fingers, or both. From what we know, it appears that most people develop this only on the toes, which explains the name “COVID toes.”

The swelling and discoloration can start in one or more fingers or toes, according to Amy Paller, MD, FAAD, a board-certified pediatric dermatologist and chair of Dermatology at Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine. At first, she may see a bright red color that gradually turns purple. COVID toes can also start with a purplish color.

The AAD goes on to say that when COVID fingers first appear, it is not accompanied by itching or discomfort. However, as the symptom persists, some patients have reported blisters, itching, and pain.

If this all sounds familiar, you may recall that a study from a Spanish university hospital published in The American Journal of Surgical Pathology found that the sudden onset of a rash can often signify a COVID-19 infection. In particular, COVID patients who experienced a rash often noticed skin changes before more common COVID symptoms appeared, such as a cough and fever.

Additionally, a UK study of COVID patients in 2020 stated that a skin rash should be a possible warning sign of a coronavirus infection:

Researchers found that 8.8% of people who reported a positive coronavirus smear test had experienced a skin rash as part of their symptoms, compared with 5.4% of people with a negative test result. . Similar results were seen in another 8.2% of users with a rash who did not undergo a coronavirus test, but still reported classic COVID-19 symptoms, such as cough, fever, or anosmia (loss of smell).

That study, in particular, found that 17% of COVID patients experienced one type of rash as their first symptom.

In all, a rash is certainly not the most common COVID-19 symptom that people are likely to experience, but it is definitely something to be aware of.

As a quick reminder, some of the most common symptoms of COVID-19 include fever, cough, fatigue, headache, shortness of breath, congestion, sudden loss of taste and smell, and body aches.

Operation PanavaC-19 will begin its Phase 2 this Thursday, March 4, which will start in the district of San Miguelito, in the province of Panama. The national vaccination plan consists of four phases.

Phase 2 has Stage 2 A that will begin with the vaccination of adults over 60 years old, this March 4.

Phase 1 (Stage 1A and 1B), began with health workers and support personnel in the front line, in the public and private system, and adults over 60 years of age who were bedridden and in family homes.

Also in Phase 1, essential groups in the front line were vaccinated, such as the Public Force, Sinaproc, Firefighters and the Red Cross, among others. And the population over 16 years of age with a disability certified in SENADIS until December 31, 2020 and bedridden, and from the Cleaning Authority.

PRIORIZATION

The health authorities indicated that the prioritization of the continuous vaccination strategy from Phase 2 was determined considering the percentage of deaths and the percentage of active positive COVID-19 cases.

In this order of prioritization of vaccination by province, it begins with the province of Panama for having 19.8% active cases and 54% deaths.

Panama Oeste has 9% active cases and 16.7% deaths to be the second in priority order in vaccination.

WHY SAN MIGUELITO?

The Ministry of Health (Minsa) reported that the Mortality Rate from COVID-19 in Panama according to health region from March 13, 2020 to February 20, 2021, shows that the district of San Miguelito leads this region. For every 100,000 inhabitants, the death rate from COVID-19 at the country level is 132.2, but when segmented, San Miguelito has an average of 223.2, which is also higher than the Metropolitan Region, which is 195.5.

Above the country average in the mortality rate are also the regions of Panama West (155.8) and Panama East (146.4). On the other hand, the province of Colón is the lowest with 12.5.

At this beginning of Phase 2, adults over 60 years of age in San Miguelito total 57,360, distributed in 9 townships.

DETAIL POSSIBLE REACTIONS AFTER THE APPLICATION OF THE VACCINE AGAINST COVID-19

Phase 2 of COVID-19 vaccines begins Thursday, March 4.

A few hours after starting Phase 2 of immunization against COVID-19, the researcher and advisor in vaccines of Panama’s vaccination strategy, Eduardo Ortega, detailed the possible reactions after applying the dose and listed recommendations prior to vaccination.

The population is asked to arrive at the corresponding center with breakfast to avoid fatigue and not take any type of medication prior to the application of the vaccine.

After the vaccine is in place, you will be guided to a post-vaccination rest room, where you will wait 15 to 30 minutes to rule out any immediate reaction.

People with a history of allergies will have to wait 30 minutes, while those who do not have that history only 15.

In the place there will be medical personnel for their due vigilance and attention.

Among the reactions expected during the vaccination day and the following day are:

  • Pain in the mobility of the vaccinated arm
  • 50% report headache and fatigue
  • 30% register joint and muscle pain
  • 10% have a fever
  • Some report itching

Ortega explained that, if these reactions occur, then he can take paracetamol to relieve symptoms.

There are stronger, but uncommon reactions such as anaphylaxis and other allergies, so psotvaccination salons are enabled.

Phase 2 of vaccination, which includes adults over 60, begins this Thursday. The health authorities reiterated the importance of going on the stipulated day to avoid inconveniences and crowds.

BARS AND NIGHTCLUBS REFUTE MINSA OPENING PLAN

After the Ministry of Health announced that from the weekend the discos, bars and canteens will be able to offer their products for sale, but only through home delivery, the Association of Restaurants, Bars and Clubs Panama (Arbyd), described the measure as inappropriate and inconsistent.

Mario Luis González, executive director of the Association of Restaurants, Bars and Clubs of Panama (Arbyd), said that at no time was the decision agreed upon or consulted with members of the sector.

He stated that home delivery is not the correct way to reactivate a sector, since that requires a process and an adaptation.

In the entertainment industry there are different business models such as bars, discos, canteens, barbecues and nightclubs and each one has its own way of operating and none in its operation notice has the possibility of selling in closed containers.

“No one is going to change their operating model to take risks after 12 months of being closed to dedicate themselves to a business that they have never done and that really places them in even unequal competition with the Chinese, grocery stores and supermarkets,” he said.

The business that wants to open as a “delivery” must first obtain a sanitary permit to operate, but it will also have to reactivate the workers’ contract or settle the rental payment and the liquor tax.

To date, Arbyd is made up of 540 companies in the capital city, of which 45% are made up of bars and 15% of nightclubs, that is, more than 400. In addition, they employ about 6 thousand workers and the other 40% it is made up of restaurants.

“We do not understand why 12 months after the pandemic they still do not make the proper consultations. You have to ask people who know when you make these types of decisions,” he said.

González assured that they are not there to judge or point out, because the only thing they want as an industry is to work and for that they need the will to reactivate the sector, which means that they must sit down and talk.

“We do not want to tell them what to do, but we do want them to listen to us so that when these types of measures are taken are the right ones and also allow us to make up for lost time after 12 months of being closed,” he said.

González made a call to the Minsa to sit down and talk, but also to approve the biosafety protocols that they delivered four months ago and they still have no response to later analyze the gradual reopening.

He stressed that at this time they could have a 25% capacity in bars. However, these are the measures that must go comprehensively that allow the sector to be reactivated in a coordinated manner and that obviously does not represent a problem.

The activity of restaurants and hotels fell 55.8% during 2020, compared to the same period in 2019, according to a figure from the National Institute of Statistics and Census of the Comptroller General of the Republic.

This decision is made due to the decrease in positive cases of covid-19 registered in recent weeks, as a result of the different restrictions implemented to mitigate the spread of the virus.

“The country with all its strategies and the proper conduct of the vast majority of Panamanians, we have managed to reduce these figures and we have had as a result an adequate control up to the moment of the figures that we have been presenting,” highlighted the Minister of Health, Luis Francisco Sucre.

For this weekend, the reopening of movie theaters, casinos and sports fields for recreational use, all with a capacity of 50% of their capacity, including their employees, will be allowed in order to avoid crowds, in Panama and Panama Oeste . The curfew remains in force throughout the national territory, from Monday to Sunday, from 10:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m.

MINSA RECEIVES RECOMMENDATION TO VACCINE PREGNANT WOMEN

Jaime Sánchez from the Panamanian Association of Obstetrics and Gynecology recommended that the COVID-19 vaccine should be offered to pregnant women throughout the country, so the Ministry of Health (Minsa) will accept this recommendation.

Sánchez reported that the contagion of COVID-19 is riskier in pregnancy, so everyone must be vaccinated.

The President of the Panamanian Association of Obstetrics and Gynecology indicated that they have reviewed the evidence, and have concluded that it is important to vaccinate pregnant women regardless of the month of pregnancy. In addition, he highlighted that Panama uses a safe vaccine such as Pfizer / BioNTech.

“The evidence that exists on pregnancies and vaccinations was reviewed, this subject being discussed with advisers and authorities of the Ministry of Health, reaching the following conclusion: the risk of a pregnant patient when contracting COVID-19 is greater. There is a greater risk of present serious complications and death than a non-pregnant patient ”, expressed Dr. Sánchez.

VACCINATION DAY BEGINS IN SAN MIGUELITO CIRCUIT 8-6

In San Miguelito, 19 schools were chosen as vaccination centers.

At 7:00 am. This Thursday, March 4, stage 2A of phase 2 of the vaccination plan against Covid-19 was scheduled to begin in the 8-6 circuit of San Miguelito, with the inoculation of people over 60 years of age.

But since before that time, several older adults could already be seen forming their line to enter the educational centers now enabled as vaccination sites.

Ana Lucía Bonilla, 75 years old, was the first older adult to be officially vaccinated at the Carlos A. Mendoza school (Belisario Porras district), which occurred at 7:25 a.m.

“I feel good,” Bonilla told the media, after she was given this first dose of the pharmaceutical duo Pfizer-BioNTech.

In other schools, the doses arrived after 7:00 a.m. Such was the case of what happened at the Pureza de María school (José Domingo Espinar), where the doses arrived at 7:25 am, while at the León A. Soto school (Amelia Denis de Icaza) they arrived at 7: 50 am

Although in these two educational centers the vaccination process began with delays, at the Louis Martinz school, after 9:00 a.m., there was a long line of people on the outskirts of the campus since the inoculation had not yet started. At the Pedro J. Ameglio school (Rufina Alfaro) there were also annoyances due to the delay.

Stage 2A of phase 2 of the vaccination plan against Covid-19 began this Thursday in the 8-6 circuit of San Miguelito, with the inoculation of people over 60 years of age.

At the Carlos A. Mendoza campus, Ministers Luis Francisco Sucre (Health) and Eyra Ruiz (Health Affairs Counselor) moved early to supervise the start of the day.

The Health Minister said that, after finishing this day on the 8-6 circuit, it will continue on 8-8, that is, Don Bosco, Juan Díaz, Parque Lefevre, Río Abajo and San Francisco. As more batches of vaccines arrive, we will advance to more circuits, Sucre said.

Ruiz reiterated that every week the deliveries of vaccine doses will continue. He recalled that the agreements with Pfizer-BioNTech contemplate the delivery of 450 thousand doses in the first quarter of 2021.

The vaccination day against the new coronavirus in San Miguelito is scheduled to last five days. According to Minister Ruiz, they are expected to vaccinate between 10,000 and 12,000 people a day.

In San Miguelito there are 95 classrooms enabled in 19 schools in the 9 townships. In total, a team of 1,464 Panamanians will help in the ongoing vaccination strategy in this district.

For his part, Yaritzel Ríos, regional director of Health of San Miguelito, called on older adults registered on the platform to be vaccinated, but in an “organized” way, that is, on the day and time indicated, to avoid crowds.

The official clarified that she has medical and nursing staff in the event of any adverse reaction.

San Miguelito is the health region with the highest mortality rate from the new SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. Ríos reported that, to date, some 700 people have died in this district, due to Covid-19.

The challenge for the health authorities is to vaccinate 57,360 people over 60 years of age in the new townships that make up the San Miguelito district.

CHINA APPROVES TWO OTHER VACCINES AGAINST COVID-19

China approves two other COVID-19 vaccines. (Is it just me, or does this remind you of “A Nightmare on Elm Street”?)

The National Medical Products Administration gave conditional approval to a vaccine from CanSino Biologics and another from the state company Sinopharm. Both are already used in select groups under an emergency authorization. The country currently has four vaccines to immunize its population.

CanSino said its single-dose vaccine is 65.28% effective 28 days after injecting it. It can be stored between two and eight degrees Celsius, “which makes it more accessible to regions with fewer public health services,” he said in a statement.

It is based on a harmless virus from the common cold, an adenovirus, to introduce the spike gene of the coronavirus into the body. This manufactures the proteins of the beak, generating an immune response. The technology is similar to that of the Astrazeneca and Johnson & Johnson vaccines, which use different adenoviruses.

It is the first COVID-19 vaccine created by a Chinese company that requires a single dose.

A Sinopharm subsidiary, the Wuhan Institute of Biologics, said its vaccine project is 72.51% efficient. It uses the same technology as an already approved vaccine from Sinopharma’s Beijing subsidiary, in which a live virus is killed and purified. The inactivated virus is delivered by injection, which elicits an immune response.

Neither company has released final safety and efficacy test data.

The CanSino vaccine was developed in conjunction with a team led by military researcher Chen Wei at the Institute of Military Medicine under the Chinese Academy of Military Sciences.

More than 40,000 volunteers in Pakistan, Mexico, Chile, Argentina and Russia participated in the last stage of testing.

Mexico and Pakistan have approved the CanSino vaccine.

MORE THAN 128 THOUSAND EMPLOYMENT CONTRACTS HAVE BEEN REACTIVATED

42.23% of suspended employment contracts have been reactivated.

A total of 128,547 contracts have been reactivated nationwide, as detailed by the Minister of Labor and Labor Development, Doris Zapata.

This represents 45.23% of the suspended contracts.

However, of the 128 thousand contracts reactivated, there have been 9,600 dismissals “for different reasons,” said Zapata.

Among the causes, Zapata lists mutual agreement, justified dismissals, termination of contracts, and resignations.

Around 280 thousand labor contracts were suspended in Panama as a result of the covid-19 pandemic, representing some 20 thousand companies.

According to the report of the National Institute of Statistics and Census, 2020 closed with 18% (371 thousand people) unemployment; while 2019 closed with 7%.

SANITARY CONTROL IS ESSENTIAL TO KEEPING COVID-19 CASES AT BAY

Continuing with the application of swabs is part of the strategy to detect possible asymptomatic cases.

The national director of Epidemiology of the Ministry of Health, Leonardo Labrador, affirmed that while the control of biosafety measures is maintained, a third wave of Covid-19 cases is likely not to occur.

After the confinement measures applied between January and February, especially in the provinces of Panama, Panama Oeste and Herrera, there was a process of reopening of activities and lifting of mobility restrictions, which is why a rebound in cases.

Labrador explained that the reopens have been gradual and that the objective was to lower the cases in February as has happened.

The statistics of the Ministry of Health reflect that February ended with 20 thousand 536 cases of the Covid-19 disease, that is, 72% or 53 thousand 53 infections less than those reported in all of January, when the figure rose to 73 thousand 589 .

Labrador said that, if you take into account these incidence factors and the management by each of the districts or provinces, the control has been done so as not to affect the entire population, but rather it has been done in an asymmetric way so that those populations that they have poor control, stronger measures have to be taken.

“Of course, that third wave is going to start as long as the regions with a much higher concentration of population get out of hand and that is not the case at this time,” said Labrador.

He recalled that the provinces of Panama and West Panama are more controlled, being the regions with the population most affected by Covid-19.

He commented that as a result of the mobilizations that took place for the dates of the carnivals, there were some incidents in the province of Los Santos, but that the regional authorities and the technical part have control of the situation.

“These slight increases are simply very isolated, they are not what are determining the course of the pandemic as a country,” said Labrador, who said that the epidemiological situation is under control.

“We have already seen these increases, but they are not what we expected, they have not escaped epidemiological surveillance and we attack them in time.”

He anticipated that they have to maintain vigilance and continue actions, especially to detect asymptomatic cases.

“We already know that there are fewer patients with symptoms, so what remains for us is to do the sweeps, the autoexpress for swabs and ask the population to remain in support of Health to do swabs without any problems.”

END NOTES:

We recently passed through a few unofficial, yet important, international celebrations.  March 4, was apparently “National Son’s Day” – My former step-mother was kind enough to send a very sweet image to me in relation to this day.  Gloria, or “Mona” as we affectionately call her, is an absolute sweetheart.  Even back when she was just dating my father, prior to their marriage, she would play hide and seek with me when I was barely 5 years old.  One of my better childhood memories.  Over the years, she was always the one who was first to reach out and send her wishes on the varied yearly holidays and celebrations.  Such a warm and thoughtful person.

Since learning of this, I decided to research and learn what other wonderful things we could celebrate on this day.  Yep, it’s also World Obesity Day…. So, me being totally in denial, I moved on to March 5th which is National Absinthe Day as well as National Cheese Doodle Day, which is probably a bummer to celebrate just after World Obesity Day.  Kinda makes me look forward to March 6 which is National Dentist’s Day as well as National Oreo Cookie Day.

No animals were improperly fed during the taking of these images.

Here are a few important dates from March 5th in history:

  • 363 Roman Emperor Julian moves from Antioch with an army of 90,000 to attack the Sassanid Empire, in a campaign that brings about his own death
  • 1046 Persian scholar Naser Khosrow begins the 7 year Middle Eastern journey which he will later describe in his book Safarnama
  • 1496 English King Henry VII grants John Cabot (Giovanni Caboto) a commission to explore for new lands
  • 1770 Boston Massacre (Incident on King Street): British soldiers kill 5 men in a crowd throwing snowballs, stones and sticks at them. African American Crispus Attucks 1st to die; later held up as early black martyr. Massacre galvanizes anti-British feelings.
  • 1946 Winston Churchill’s “Iron Curtain” speech in Fulton, Missouri, popularizes the term and draws attention to the division of Europe

And by all means (unless you’re out getting your COVID vaccine) STAY HOME!!…
