Famed psychologist Sigmond Freud once stated, “If it’s not one thing, it’s your mother.”.  OK, he didn’t actually say that, but I’m sure he thought it once and again, given his beliefs.  One thing that he DID say, was

“One day, in retrospect, the years of struggle will strike you as the most beautiful.”

Sigmond Freud

Struggle brings unity, especially when there’s a common enemy.  Many times, to get Brett Jr and Brandon to work together on something, I’ll make myself the enemy.  Chores are behind?  Homework ignored?  Video Gaming been excessive?  A simple, “No-one goes fishing this weekend, if THIS isn’t done by Friday!” in a booming voice, is enough to ensure they get it done.  Anyone who takes away your weekend fishing is your enemy.

Struggle also births creativity.  Businesses were shut down but were soon given the option to cater to online shoppers.  Few, if any, of these businesses would have ever attempted to set up the platform or deliver door to door if it weren’t for the pandemic.

Struggle also helps to prioritize.  When times are tough, you’ll tend to put focus back on yourself, shying away from material or frivolous things.  Most will embrace family unity.

I grew up alone with my mom in a cheap apartment, where the weather can get dangerous in any of the seasons.  Blizzards and cold in the winter, floods in the spring, bear attacks in the fall and tornadoes in the summer.  Fine, maybe not bear attacks, but I just now realized how safe the fall seasons are and had to come up with something.  Just the same, I remember some very cold hyperthermia mornings when mom would get me out of bed very early and we would huddle around the oven and cuddle in blankets.  I used to look forward to those mornings, not realizing that it was for survival as the heater would go out and it was the only way we were going to make it through the night.  Yet, to this day, whenever Mom and I talk about it, we both agree that they were truly the most beautiful times.

Perhaps eventually we’ll give new derogatory life to the term “2020”, for how horrible it has been.  For example, if you’re cooking and it doesn’t come out like you hoped, “Man, you really 2020ed that turkey, bro!”  Or if your life was going great, but then you cheated on your wife of 20 years, giving her no option than to leave you for her high school sweetheart, taking all possessions and pitting your children against you, you could say, “I really 2020ed my marriage!”

But, I think eventually, we’re still going to see a lot of good in all of this.  I met with my buddy Frank yesterday after work, on a whim.  He sent me a photo of him having a pint at a local pub when I was coincidentally leaving my office for home.  “Don’t you move, I’m heading over!”

Both of us agree, that this isn’t going to be over with in 2021, but at least we’ve recaptured some of the important things that we used to take for granted like, just getting one quick after-work pint.

Yoli’s wisdom

Why? The virus poses a greater threat in closed and crowded spaces than outdoors.

In poorly ventilated indoor environments, such as most restaurants and bars, the virus can hang in the air for extended periods and travel distances of more than 2 meters, Marr and other researchers noted.

This summer, scientists isolated live viruses from tiny droplets called aerosols that floated in the air up to 5 meters away from a infected patient at a hospital.

Unless you live with someone who is infected (in which case the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC] of the United States offer specific guidelines to follow) protecting yourself at home does not require especially extraordinary measures, Marr commented.

When you have the courage to go elsewhere, wearing a face shield and washing your hands are still the best ways to protect yourself indoors.

However, fears of the risk of contagion indoors have driven the market for expensive devices that promise to clean surfaces – and even the air – of the virus, but experts warned that most of these products are overkill and may even have consequences. harmful unintentional.

We asked experts what strategies people should adopt and which ones they should avoid when the weather is colder.

IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT VENTILATION.

Some school districts have focused on protecting their ventilation systems from viruses, and the CDC has produced a very comprehensive set of recommendations for companies trying to prevent their workers from catching the virus.

However, “the conversation about risk reduction goes beyond ventilation,” said Joseph Allen, a building safety expert at Harvard University’s T. H. Chan School of Public Health.

“It is a layered defense strategy in which no action alone is sufficient, but together they can reduce risk.”

Allen proposed the following measures for managing larger buildings:

  • Eliminate exposure whenever possible: for example, by encouraging staff to work from home.
  • Allow entry only to those people who need to be physically in the building.
  • Adopt strategies such as adding air filters and disinfecting surfaces.
  • Manage the flow of people passing through the building: for example, the number of people entering the elevators on each occasion.
  • Require the use of face shields and other personal protective equipment as required by indoor circumstances.

Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have created an app to determine how many people can safely congregate in a given space and for how long.

Regardless of these precautions, the ideal strategy is to wear a mask indoors, said Martin Bazant, a chemical engineer at MIT, adding: “That has a much more relevant effect than either of those strategies would provide.”

There are simple solutions that we can try right now.

This is a free and easy solution: If possible, open the windows, “especially during the halftime season when the weather conditions are warmer,” Allen said.

Schools must have enough ventilation to completely exchange the air in a room every 20 minutes, but most barely manage to do so once an hour.

“Even just opening the 6-inch windows can dramatically change the rate of air exchange,” Allen said.

The advice is also useful for car trips. Opening a window slightly can help disperse coronavirus that other passengers might breathe out.

Oscillating fans can be helpful or harmful indoors, depending on how they are used.

Ideally, they should not be placed anywhere where the virus-laden exhalations of an infected person can push across a room or onto another person’s face.

A non-oscillating fan placed in a window and away from people can increase airflow in a room without these risks.

PANAMA, AMONG THE 11 COUNTRIES WITH THE HIGHEST TRANSMISSION OF SARS-COV-2: ‘THE LANCET’

Until last Monday, the health authorities reported 21,234 active cases of Covid-19.

A report by the scientific journal The Lancet published on September 14 places Panama among the 11 countries with a very high viral transmission of the Covid-19 disease.

The rest of the countries that make up the list with very high transmission of the virus are: Bolivia, Spain, the United States, Argentina, Israel, Kuwait, Brazil, Colombia, Bahrain and the Maldives.

The classification of Panama in the group of countries with very high transmission is due to the fact that in the country there are between 100 or more new cases per million inhabitants per day, the magazine document points out. Transmission is considered to have been suppressed when there are five or fewer new cases per million inhabitants per day in the country.

The report was prepared by a Covid-19 Lancet Commission with data from the countries until last August. The commission was created to help governments, civil society and entities of the United Nations to respond effectively to the pandemic.

This enormous variety underscores that countries with high or very high transmission rates are not carrying out enough non-pharmacological interventions to control Covid-19 disease, as countries in Asia and the Pacific have done.

On this aspect, Enrique Mendoza, dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Panama, and a member of the Health Advisory Council, who is aware of this report, stated that the results that have been obtained in the country in recent months with The slowdown of the virus is due precisely to non-pharmacological measures designed to prevent infected people from spreading the virus to other people.

He added that the decision of the Government authorities to cancel the national holidays and the Carnival of 2021 is in line with non-pharmacological measures, and he acknowledged the authorities for having made difficult decisions proactively.

Non-pharmacological interventions to stop the pandemic are physical distancing, restriction of meetings, teleworking, among others.

Countries with the highest viral transmission.

Mendoza recalled that the country has 16 positive people for every 100,000 inhabitants daily, much higher than the threshold for a safe opening of commercial activities. “Which means that even though we are in a deceleration phase, we are in a zone of risk of re-acceleration,” he said.

In fact, the Minister of Health, Luis Francisco Sucre, reiterated yesterday that an increase in cases of Covid-19 is not ruled out, as a result of the reopening of new economic activities in the country.

Sucre stated that most of the countries that to date had achieved control of this pandemic, after the reopening of commercial activities have suffered a re-outbreak or a new impact of the pandemic.

However, Sucre stressed that what the Government and the entire team are trying is that “this impact is the least possible in terms of epidemiology and public health.”

NATIONAL DAYS ARE KEPT AND IF THEY ARE WORKED, THEY MUST BE PAID, VICE MINISTER TEJADA

The Vice Minister of Labor of Panama, Roger Tejada confirmed to Telemetro Reporta that the days off that come, according to article 46 of the Labor Code, are maintained and must be paid as established in this rule if they work on these dates.

Tejada stressed that on November 3, 5, 10 and 28; and the other national days that come, although they cannot be celebrated due to the restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic, they will remain national.

On the other hand, Tejada spoke about the latest labor reactivations and outlined that in Panama so far there are 281 thousand suspended contracts and some 65 thousand contracts have been reactivated.

Regarding the reactivated contracts, he added that in the construction sector there are 8,150, in the wholesale and retail trade there were about 30 thousand activations, which represents 35% of the contracts in the tertiary sector.

The vice minister said that according to the projections of the Labor Observatory and the Labor Projection Directorate, it is expected that 25% more of the contracts will be reactivated next month.

Another aspect that the Mitradel has detected is that, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, companies are sending requests in recent weeks to suspend contracts in the first blocks that were reactivated.

However, Tejada explained that despite the fact that Article 157 proposes the protection of employment, suspensions of contracts can be submitted until December, but by sending requests that indicate the reason for the extension of that suspension.

The Mitradel representative explained that so far there have been no significant outbreaks of COVID-19 after the reopening of sectors and pointed out that no sector has closed; Only 1% of coronavirus cases have been reported prior to the opening of activities.

The head of the health ministry said last week that entry to the beaches would be delayed up to 15 days. According to Sucre, the experience of other countries has made them take action on the matter.

In this sense, representatives of the executive have expressed their concern about the possible mass assistance to these areas.

Panama took another step since yesterday on its way to the new normal with the reopening of restaurants and shopping centers. Professional, administrative and general services, in addition to the racetrack, also reopened.

According to the roadmap shared by the Minsa, the rest of the restrictions will be lifted on October 12.

TOCUMEN WILL SET CONTROL POINTS FOR TRAVELERS

Tocumen in recent days has been handling a movement of 2,500 people and a progressive growth is projected from October 12.

Tocumen International Airport will install 3 checkpoints inside passenger terminal 1 to perform the PCR test (Express Covid-19 Test) on passengers who arrive in the country without the result of the test that validates that they are not carriers of the coronavirus (Covid-19).

In this way, the country tries to stop the possible arrival of travelers who have arrived without their respective health control done in the required time.

In accordance with the parameters set by the Ministry of Health, foreigners who enter the country from October 12, when international flights will be reactivated, will have to present the result of the antigen test, an examination that must be carried out 48 hours in advance. advance before your arrival in Panama.

Claudio Dutary, operations manager of Tocumen S.A., commented that the control points will be installed at the exit of the north pier and the satellites to avoid mixing in the flow of passengers.

During a discussion held by the American Chamber of Commerce and Industries of Panama (AmCham), Dutary indicated that the cost of the rapid test that will be applied to travelers arriving to Tocumen without having been determined has yet been determined with the Ministry of Health. the result.

Nor has it been defined whether Tocumen or Minsa will be the authority responsible for hiring the laboratories that will be installed within the terminal area to analyze the PCR tests.

He added that the airport continues to work to establish an optimal time for the entry and exit of aircraft to avoid crowds of passengers.

The president of the Panama Air Lines Association (ALAP), Fredy Rodríguez, commented that airlines have been prepared for months to resume regular activities in Panama, but warned that the country must progress in applying the new technologies that involve less invasive tests to detect coronavirus.

In the discussion, the reality of the hotel sector was also discussed, which, along with air transport, is one of the most affected by the stoppage caused by the pandemic.

In that sense, Raúl Jiménez, secretary of the Panamanian Association of Hotels (Apatel), indicated that it will be a long recovery process, and that it could take four and a half years to return to the levels of 2019, which were not the best.

He estimates that a small group of hotels will open their doors from October 12 and estimates that occupancy will be around 5% in the first days of operation.

In Panama there are just over 30 thousand rooms dedicated to public accommodation, of which 20 thousand are in the province of Panama.

Ovidio Díaz, vice president of the Panamanian Chamber of Tourism, said that the sector is prepared to open from October 12 and points out that Panama has tourism products that can be highlighted in each of the provinces. In this sense, proposals have been presented to the Government to encourage the mobilization of people, but to date nothing has been defined.

Regarding promotion, Lorena Fábrega, Director of Business Development of the International Promotion Fund, indicated that all the guidelines that people who want to travel to Panama must comply with have already been published and commented that a positive aspect is that they do not Access has been restricted from any country, as other nations have established.

BANKING ASSOCIATION CONCERNED BEFORE APPROVAL OF AMENDMENT OF THE LAW

On September 30 of this year, a bill that modifies the Banking Law was approved in the third debate. This is bill 308, proposed by deputy Raúl Pineda.

The project adds a number to article 127-A of the law, modifying the powers of the liquidator or the Liquidation Board.

The Banking Association of Panama (ABP) issued a statement to the country on Thursday, October 1, without specifically referring to a bill, but rather to various legislative initiatives.

“The Banking Association of Panama (ABP) expresses to the country its concern over the repeated attempts to modify, without consultation or technical support, the legal framework of the National Banking System (SBN), one of the main pillars on which Panama has supported its growth and improvement of the quality of life of Panamanians, “says ABP.

They emphasize the good results of banking policies in Panama and a high percentage of small savers with access to banking.

THE APPLICATION OF VACCINES AGAINST COVID-19 BEGINS WITH VOLUNTEERS IN PANAMA

The clinical trial in its phase 2 of the vaccine against COVID-19 in Panama, began this Wednesday, September 30 in the country. This, with the application of vaccines in participants of legal age, who will be evaluated by specialist doctors during the next 13 months to confirm the safety and adequate dose of the drug, reported Xavier Sáez-Llorens, principal investigator of the study.

On August 8, the National Research Bioethics Committee (CNBI) approved the study of the vaccine manufactured by the German biotechnology company CureVac AG. As soon as the announcement was made, multiple people contacted the CEVAXIN Research Center to volunteer, mainly between 18 and 59 years old.

This study is a phase 2, multicenter, controlled clinical trial to evaluate the safety, reactogenicity, and immunogenicity of the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine in adults over 60 years of age and adults between 18 and 60 years of age.

“In this phase, 250 people will participate here in Panama. All participants, without exception, must sign a fully detailed consent prior to the first application of the vaccine to ensure that all questions about the study and the possible risks and side effects have been answered satisfactorily. They are then evaluated through medical examinations with which their eligibility is verified. Volunteers are also covered by an insurance policy if any adverse reaction associated with the study vaccine occurs ”, Saéz-Llorens assured, clarifying that signing the informed consent form does not mean that the volunteer renounces any of the your legal rights.

The doctor warned that there is always the possibility of individual temporary reactions, “All medications that are administered, as basic as acetaminophen, can cause side effects. Intramuscular injections can cause local reactions, such as pain, bruising, redness, swelling, tenderness and itching at the injection site, which can last a few days, ”he said.

The COVID-19 Vaccine Research Consortium is made up of the CEVAXIN Research Center and the Institute for Scientific Research and High Technology Services (INDICASAT-AIP) and has the endorsement of the National Secretariat for Science, Technology and Innovation (SENACYT) .

It aims to channel and prioritize initiatives to develop a vaccine against COVID-19.

Scientific research in Panama has more than 20 years of experience with important achievements in the implementation of vaccination programs and the inclusion of vaccines in the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI).

COVID-19 CONTAGIOUS REPRODUCTION RATE (RT) INCREASED TO 1% IN THE LAST WEEK, HOWEVER, HEALTH AUTHORITIES EXPECT IT TO DECREASE AGAIN

The drop in Rt again will also depend on the behavior of each of the citizens in the country, said Health Minister Luis Francisco Sucre.

The national (RT) or number of COVID-19 infections for the last week of this September in Panama was calculated at 1%; This was announced by the director of the Metropolitan Health Region Israel Cedeño.

This is due to the conglomerate of cases that were registered last week in the province of Herrera, specifically in the public jail.

For his part, the Minister of Health Luis Francisco Sucre, added that in recent weeks the COVID-19 indicators have evolved adequately, the (RT), increased to 1%; but he hopes that in the next few weeks the (RT) will be below 1% again.

However, he added that this will also depend on the behavior of each of the citizens in the country.

The behavior of the epidemic curve of COVID-19 in Panama, since the last week of August is in a state of plateau, said the director of the Metropolitan Health Region Israel Cedeño.

Within the distribution by age group, the group most affected by COVID-19 is 18 to 59 years of age.

This group had a slump in the last week of August, Cedeño explained.

From the week of September 14 onwards it is in a plateau state, as are the groups of 60.

However, regarding the incidence of COVID-19 cases in Panama, Dr. Cedeño highlighted that the city of Panama and the province of Darién maintain the highest incidence, which corresponds to 3,100 per 100,000 inhabitants.

However, in the Ngobe Buglé region, the province of Los Santos, Herrera and Coclé, the situation in this regard has improved, since it is found at less than 1,300 per 100,000 inhabitants of incidence.

The director of the Metropolitan Health Region stressed that more tests are being carried out, but the percentage of positivity continues to be low.

It should be noted that, despite the fact that the health authorities have stated that more beds have been set up, including in the intensive care area, there are still certain restrictions in Panama.

Bathing on the beaches, for example, is still prohibited, as it is intended to prevent a re-outbreak of COVID-19, as has happened in other countries.

MINSA MUST DETERMINE THE REOPENING DATE OF THE CINEMA THEATER IN PANAMA, MITRADEL

Placement of alcohol gel dispensers in the entrances, consumption areas, as well as soap and other hygiene supplies in the bathrooms.

The Director of Inspection of the Ministry of Labor and Labor Development (Mitradel), Carlos Landero, reiterated this Thursday that the Ministry of Health (Minsa) must determine the date and under what conditions the reopening of movie theaters in Panama will take place.

This, after the Film Exhibition Industry of Panama received from the Mitradel, the approval of its Protocol Guide to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Landero explained that “the crowds that previously existed for the purpose of being able to enter multiple movie theaters should not occur, the way of acquiring tickets will vary, as well as internal behavior in the cinema, the seats are marked and distanced, in such a way so that to reopen the cinemas of the city and the interior will need an individual behavior of each one of the assistants, both adults and minors”.

He argued that with the new normal, cinemas “will not have a multiple entry for everyone,” as it will be an individual entry, where attendees will have their temperature taken, once that step is completed, the hand cleaning protocols are applied with alcohol or alcohol gel to enter the room.

Landero insisted that they recommend to the Film Exhibition Industry of Panama the possibility that people make the purchase of tickets in advance so that there are no crowds at the entrance of cinemas and multiple rooms.

“It is completely forbidden to have internal conversations in movie theaters, if the person goes with a friend or family, physical distancing must be kept,” said the official.

By the time the reopening of this commercial activity is allowed, in each cinema, the following rules must be met:

  • Daily deep cleaning and disinfection of all high contact surfaces.
  • Temperature measurement at the entrance of the establishment for employees, suppliers and customers.
  • Placement of alcohol gel dispensers at the entrances, consumption areas, as well as soap and other cleaning supplies in the bathrooms.
  • Mandatory use of masks.
  • Separation of seats, disabling two chairs in between, guaranteeing distance between people and family bubbles.
  • In box offices and cafeterias, limit the distance between customers of two meters and place protection screens in acrylic.
  • Control the entrance to the establishment according to the capacity of each cinema.
  • It should be noted that all movie theater branches must have a health committee that will ensure compliance with the rules and registry of blogs.

WHICH PANAMANIAN PEOPLE ARE MOST VULNERABLE TO COVID-19?

Comorbidities are crucial factors in dealing with the devastating effects of COVID-19. That is why it is important that you take care of your health and eat healthy.

The former Minister of Health, Miguel Mayo, advises the population that if you live with a person over 60 years of age or who have some comorbidity, you have to take extreme hygiene measures because they are the most vulnerable to dying from COVID-19.

What is known about COVID-19 for now is that 80% of the population that contracts the virus does not develop a serious illness, but 20% does require hospitalization, mechanical ventilation and some intensive care.

Gustavo Santamaría, National Director of Health Services of the Social Security Fund (CSS) explains that this disease has three important phases in its development.

The first is a phase that is like a cold, the second is a phase of coagulopathy or disseminated intravascular coagulation, and the third is an inflammatory phase. Several studies suggest that the 20% who develop the level of severity of the disease already had obesity, cardiovascular and diabetes problems; in other words, non-communicable chronic diseases.

Dr. Ileana Saldaña, pulmonologist at the Social Security Fund, assures that not all those who have died are obese or over 65, because “we have older adults who have had severe Covid and have come out ahead and even young people who unfortunately have not achieved Even patients who were previously not known to have diseases and once they enter the hospital with Covid due to severe pneumonia, they are diagnosed as hypertensive or diabetic, “he said.

To maintain good health, the nutritionist, José Ramiro López, recommends eating a balanced diet. The consumption of foods that contribute to cardiovascular health is recommended, such as foods with fibers, high in potassium, low in sodium and that have vitamins and minerals that strengthen your immune system.

He pointed out that obese people have a vitamin D deficiency, which is important for the immune system, and that what happens with the obese and diabetic is that they already have inflammations and what Covid does is that it aggravates, deteriorates or accelerates the damage multi-organ.

To avoid getting infected, remember to wash your hands, wear your mask, and keep your distance.

COVID-19 PATIENTS ARRIVE LATE FOR MEDICAL CARE

Many COVID-19 patients are late to seek medical help. This is how several doctors warned this Wednesday, September 30.

They point out that rapid boarding can be the difference between life and death and ask the population not to lower their guard.

Several people are confident that they only have a common cold, and end up going to the doctor when it is already late, in many cases going directly to the Intensive Care Unit.

Between September 28 and August 28 of this year, between 6 to 18 daily deaths from COVID-19 were registered in Panama.
