Brett’s Deep Dark Secrets; Total Quarantine Continues on Weekends, in These Provinces; Limit to Suspension of Contracts; Covid 19 will Remain, but Milder; Icey in Panama?

Friday, February 19, 2021

I’m not one to give out my long-standing, time-tested secrets to just anyone, but that’s just downright selfish.  Over the years, we’ve done a lot of work on our house.  I’ve learned my lesson the hard way in most of the projects, but it’s through these trials and tribulations that I’ve come to appreciate just how lucky I’ve been to find a handful of skilled workers who are willing to go the extra mile on your projects at an affordable price.

So, snuggle up to that glass of Chardonnay, pinch a few slices of creamy camembert and get ready to soak in this magic directory of names that I carry around with me in a little black book I call “Brett’s Deep Dark Secrets”.  These are the unsung heroes, the Rembrandts of my artistic blunders, the MacGyvers constantly willing to assist with chewing gum and superglue always at the ready.  But remember, with great knowledge and power, comes great responsibility.  Use this information wisely and people, their contact information and specialty, that I use completely trusting of their good intentions and uncanny ability to put up with my ridiculous demands and haughty attitude.

Jose Montes – electrician.  6689-6603 –

Does great work, uses the correct materials, gives good advice.  He’s quick to the task and it’s without saying that he’s honest.  No English, but he looks to me to translate any messages from new clients.

Carlton Davis – experienced welder and general handyman.  6691-1086 –

Fair price for painting, but not for extremely detailed projects.  Need white paint splashed on that picket fence?  Davis!  But as a welder, his knowledge is impressive.  I’ve known him now for over 25 years and will turn to him first for my “projects”.

Ingrid Newman – mastery of the mystic computer arts – 6623-8138 –

More than just a computer repairindividual, Ingrid kicks butt in personality, wit and charm as she goes the extra mile to fix your computer.  I mean this quite literally.  She will drive that extra mile, go to your home, pick up your laptop only to come back at a later date with your computer fully functional.  She’s amazing.  And she is multi-lingual.

Jose Harari – embroidery.  6070-0356 –

I´m sure not everyone has a daily need to embroider a T-Shirt, but if you need just 1 or perhaps 1,000 shirts done, Jose is the someone you can count on for a good price, variety of options and a timely service.  Bilingual.

Alejandro Guerrero – all things CCTV.  6499-3959 –

Honestly, he’s a bit pricier than most, but paired with honesty, it’s impossible to look towards anyone else for camera installations.  You need that, especially when you need to ensure that the person you hire isn’t also going to spy on you with this fresh new system you just installed.  Alejandro and honesty go together like that Chardonnay and creamy camembert I mentioned earlier.

Ariel Moreno – Floors.  6930-9237 –

I met Ariel as he was buffing floors in Building 21 of Corozal in 1990.  Yeah, 31 years ago.  He can pull a shine, glaze cement, lay down tiles, like none other.  The absolute nicest guy who’s smile just never leaves his face.

Alejandro Castroverde – one of the more complete and challenging exercise instructors you’ll find.  6964-6156 –

Alejandro is known across the globe with clients from Europe, Canada and to the far reaches of Aguadulce.  He will size you up for your specialized list of needs and goals and kick your butt as many times as you want during the week.  I have been working out 3 times a week and would do more, but I have this amazing list of excuses as to why not.  Chat him up and sweat that ham hock!

Most of my contacts do not speak English.  But if you write them via Whatsapp first, they will all find a way to get back and help you with your projects.

TOP NEWS and TIDBITS:

Yoli’s Wisdom:

Immune system.

The immune system is frequently cited in health and scientific articles, but what it is is rarely explained. Many believe that it is like an ethereal entity that traps enemy microorganisms in a kind of limbo.

It is not actually an individual unit, but a complex network of cells, tissues, and organs that help the body fight infections and other diseases.

When germs such as bacteria or viruses invade the human body, the goal is to attack it and multiply. This process is called infection. The infection generates different diseases.

The immune system can either prevent the microorganism from infecting the body, or act to eliminate it once it is inside.

WHAT ARE THE PARTS OF THE IMMUNE SYSTEM?

The immune system is made up of different parts:

The skin. It can help prevent germs from entering the body.

Mucous membranes Moist internal linings of some organs and body cavities. They produce mucus and other substances that can trap and fight germs.

White blood cells Cells that kill germs.

Organs and tissues of the lymphatic system. Like the thymus, spleen, tonsils, lymph nodes, lymphatic vessels, and bone marrow. They produce, store, and transport white blood cells.

HOW DOES THE IMMUNE SYSTEM WORK?

The immune system defends the body against substances that it considers harmful or foreign.

These substances are called antigens. They can be germs like bacteria and viruses, chemicals, or toxins. They could also be cells damaged by cancer or sunburn.

When the immune system recognizes an antigen, it attacks it. This is called an immune response. Part of this response is making antibodies. Antibodies are proteins that act to attack, weaken, and destroy antigens.

The body also makes other cells to fight the antigen.

After this battle, the immune system has a memory left. So later, if you see the antigen again, you can recognize it. Then it will quickly send out the correct antibodies, so in most cases, the person does not get sick again. This protection against a certain disease is called immunity.

TIPS TO STRENGTHEN THE IMMUNE SYSTEM

The rules are basically the same to follow to have a balanced life and good health.

Have a balanced diet. Eating fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes, and white and lean meats with enough nutrients and antioxidants will help the immune system fight off pathogens. Believe it or not, there are good bacteria that live in your intestines. This microbiotic, also called intestinal flora, enhanced by these foods, prevent infectious agents from invading the digestive system.

Eat foods with omega-3s. Although some degree of inflammation is a common response of the body to, for example, a stressful situation, or an accident or injury, chronic inflammation can cause the immune system to stop working well. The fatty acids present in fish such as salmon, tuna or mackerel, contain a good amount of omega-3s, protect against excessive inflammation, as well as being a natural shield against heart disease.

Pay more attention to probiotics. These substances present especially in fermented foods such as yogurt help to maintain the intestinal flora at a balanced level, well “trained” to reject pathogens.

Sleep well. It doesn’t have to become insomnia to be a problem for the immune system. Not sleeping enough hours, or having sleep disturbances, for example waking up many times a night, causes the balance between sleep and wakefulness to be upset. And that balance must exist for the immune system to remain balanced.

Take the right vitamins. There is a myth that equates the words health and vitamins without explaining much more, as if every vitamin provides health. However, they should not be taken indiscriminately because depending on the doses they may not be safe. Always check with your doctor before starting to take vitamins in supplement form.

There are three vitamins that are the leaders when it comes to boosting the immune system:

Vitamin C. It is one of the most powerful vitamins for the immune system. In fact, it helps prevent colds and improve flu symptoms. Citrus fruits are the main source of this nutrient.

Vitamin B6. It collaborates with the biochemical reactions of the immune system. It is found mostly in cold-water fish and chickens, and in chickpeas.

Vitamin E. It is one of the vitamins with the most antioxidants, which help fight infections. Walnuts and spinach, along with seeds, are the main sources of vitamin E.

Do exercise. What you can, without pressure, even walking a few blocks a day, helps. Moving is the key. Especially if the work is sedentary: you have to try to get away from the desk, even for a few minutes, several times a day.

Drink lots of water. Water, it is true, purifies. Staying hydrated helps the body in general and, therefore, the immune system.

Controlling stress. Unfortunately, it is one of the most difficult things to achieve and the one that impacts the immune system the most.

Stress, which is considered a psychological reaction, has a specific impact on the body, physical manifestations that reach the immune system.

TYPES OF IMMUNITY

There are three forms of immunity:

Innate. It is with the immunity with which it is born, the first line of defense of the organism made up of the skin, the membranes and the organs that are part of the immune system.

Active. It is the one that develops when the organism comes into contact with a germ, or the one that is generated when vaccinated against a germ.

Passive It occurs when antibodies to a disease are received instead of being generated naturally. For example, babies receive antibodies from their mothers, or for example antibodies can be obtained from blood products such as plasma.

PANAMA RESUMES VACCINATION PLAN AGAINST COVID-19; IN CHIRIQUÍ THEY INJECTED OLDER ADULTS IN ASYLUM

The second shipment of Pfizer / BioNTech vaccines against Covid-19 has already arrived in Panama.

Panama resumed this Wednesday, February 17, the vaccination process against Covid-19.

Nurse Violeta Gaona de Cocherán, 59 years old and who was officially the first person to be vaccinated against the new coronavirus in the country on January 20, received the second dose of Pfizer / BioNTech on Wednesday. Gaona de Cocherán, who works at the Santo Tomás hospital, reiterated that she feels in good health.

And it is that from early hours – and under strict security measures – the process of distribution of the doses of vaccines of the pharmaceutical duo Pfizer and BioNTech was carried out.

In the San Miguel Arcángel hospital they received 152 vials representing 912 doses. 207 who received the first dose and then the front-line personnel were vaccinated.

The Expanded Immunization Program of the Ministry of Health reported that this Wednesday it would send some 41,000 doses to eight health regions of the country. Aircraft of the National Aeronaval Service transferred the doses to Bocas del Toro, Chirquí, Darién and central provinces.

This second phase of distribution began after, after midnight on Wednesday, the health authorities received the 68,860 doses that were scheduled by Pfizer and BioNTech.

VACCINES ARRIVE IN AZUERO

A total of 6 thousand 66 vaccines against Covid-19 arrived, by air, in the Azuero region. In the case of the province of Herrera, the 3,192 vaccines arrived at the Capitán Alonso Valderrama airport.

The regional director of Health of Herrera, Luis Pérez, said that these doses are aimed at officials of the Ministry of Health and the Social Security Fund, to whom the first dose was applied and the rest to officials who are in the first battle line against Covid-19.

He added that 48 doses will also be allocated from this lot for the Azuero Lions Home for the Elderly, based in Chitré.

Meanwhile, another 2,874 doses arrived at the Guararé airport. The regional director of health of Los Santos, Ayvar Hernández, said that part of these vaccines are aimed at the staff of the Joaquín Pablo Franco Sayas hospitals in Las Tablas and the Anita Moreno regional hospital in Los Santos, who have already been vaccinated.

The vaccination began today and should culminate in a period of no more than five days, Hernández said.

The Government detailed that the second doses will be taken from the people who were vaccinated since January 20 in the first delivery and will continue with stage 1A: patients over 60 years bedridden, in asylums and shelters. Stage 1B will also continue, with the first group of health and support workers who were not considered in the first stage.

ELDERLY ADULTS VACCINATE IN CHIRIQUÍ

With the arrival of 7,170 new doses of vaccines against Covid-19, this Wednesday, the immunization included 138 older adults who are in homes, homes or asylums in the region.

1,867 health workers were also benefited, confirmed Gladis Novoa, regional director of the Minsa.

Very early, the vials arrived at the Enrique Malek airport in David, with all the coordination and security for their transfer to the different vaccination points.

“With all the coordination between the Minsa and the Social Security Fund, we have an orderly and coordinated process for the distribution and application of these vaccines,” said the governor of Chiriquí, Juan Carlos Muñoz.

RUSSIAN SPUTNIK V VACCINE IS EFFECTIVE AGAINST BRITISH STRAIN, REGULATOR SAYS

The Sputnik V vaccine is currently registered in 26 countries, including Russia.

The first Russian vaccine, Sputnik V, and the second, called EpiVacCorona and registered in Russia

Last October, they are effective against the British strain of the coronavirus, the body in charge of consumer protection, Rospotrebnadzor, said today.

“The protective effect has been demonstrated by neutralizing reactions using serum from people who received Sputnik V and EpiVacCorona and developed antibodies to SARS-CoV-2,” he said on his Facebook account Rospotrebnadzor.

“The sera of the vaccinated people effectively neutralized both the British variant of the coronavirus and the coronavirus itself, which does not contain the set of mutations characteristic of the British strain,” the Russian federal agency said.

Rospotrebnadzor does not reveal how many people have been analyzed in this study carried out by the State Center for Virology and Biotegnology “Véktor”, a developer of the EpiVacCorona.

On Monday, he told the official TASS agency that the second Russian vaccine was also effective against the South African and Brazilian strains, without offering more data.

Russian President Vladimir Putin yesterday instructed the Government to analyze the effectiveness of Russian vaccines against new variants of the coronavirus and if necessary to carry out more research to adapt them.

The deadline for the first report is March 15 and then a new one every half year, but Rospotrebnadzor was already ahead of today.

In Russia before the New Year, the presence of the British strain was detected in a patient, who is already recovered, according to the Interfax agency.

The “Véktor” Center isolated the British strain last December and has studied this variant of the coronavirus.

Sputnik V was registered in Russia last August and has an efficacy of 91.6% according to interim analyzes of phase III clinical trials published this month in “The Lancet.”

Criticized for being announced by Putin last year without having completed all the trials, it is currently registered in 26 countries, including Russia.

EpiVacCorona in turn completed clinical trials at the end of last September and was registered in Russia in October.

On November 16, the Ministry of Health authorized post-registration tests in volunteers over 60 years of age and for tests in 3,000 volunteers between 18 and 60 years old.

Last month Rospotrebnadzor announced to the Russian media, again without giving further details, that the second Russian vaccine is 100% effective.

PANAMÁ HOPES TO RECEIVE 600 THOUSAND DOSES OF THE COVID-19 VACCINE BY THE END OF MARCH, 2021

Yesterday the news was received that Panama will receive the second batch of Pfizer vaccines early this Wednesday morning. There are 62 thousand 859 new doses that will continue phase 1-A and start phase 1-B.

As with the first batch, once the drug arrives in the country, it will be transferred to the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI), from there the distribution will begin immediately with the objective that on Wednesday morning the vaccines will be available at sites of placement.

Eduardo Ortega, director of the National Secretariat for Science, Technology and Innovation (Senacyt), explained that phase 1 that includes first-line health personnel, people who are in nursing homes, complete the second dose to those who have already been vaccinated and health personnel who are not first line, but it is also important.

“It is a significant number of people, there are approximately 60 thousand people among health personnel, second doses and people over 60 years of age who are at home or nursing homes,” said Ortega.

He reiterated that it is important to vaccinate as many people as quickly as possible to decrease cases of serious illness and deaths; with the aim of giving flexibility to the system.

Ortega explained that each public hospital and each private hospital, through the medical and nursing directorate, provide the list of who should be vaccinated to the nurses of the Expanded Program on Immunization who will be in charge of applying the drug.

In phase 1 vaccination it is expected to inoculate 120 thousand people. Ortega said that they plan to have continuity in the delivery of vaccines starting next week, since Pfizer indicated that by the end of March it expects to finish delivering the first 450 thousand doses, also through the COVAX initiative it is expected to receive 216 thousand doses, so that by the end of March we would have more than 600 thousand doses.

THIRD WAVE

The specialist reiterated that as long as we do not achieve a massive vaccination we are susceptible to a third wave due to the relaxation of mobility and quarantine measures. “We have learned that we can control this organism, there is a dramatic decrease in the number of infected people and the number of deaths and this is due to biosecurity measures, but if we do not follow them” there may be a rebound in the number of cases and an increase in community transmission, ”said Ortega.

TRACEABILITY APP

The Government Innovation Authority will launch a mobile phone app that will let people know when and how long they have been in contact with a COVID-positive person, and launch an alert.

“This digital tool I think is going to be excellent, this will allow us to be better informed, it will allow us to be informed if we have been in contact with a positive person for more than 15 minutes,” he said. Ortega explained that this application will be fed with the number of people who are proving positive.

He reminded people that if they suspect they are infected, the important thing is to isolate themselves immediately and thus avoid infecting the rest of the family.

PANAMA IMPLEMENTS COVID-19 EXPOSURE NOTIFICATION TECHNOLOGY FOR SMART PHONES

The covid-19 exposure notification system seeks to improve traceability in the country.

Starting this week, citizens will be able to download an application that informs if they have been in contact with a positive person with covid-19, reported the Minister of Health of Panama, Luis Sucre.

Sucre said that the entity that he directs together with the Authority for Government Innovation (AIG) in alliance with the companies Google and Apple, enabled this application that allows contact tracing.

Luis Oliva, administrator of the AIG, who offered more details about the application, explained that it is about the technology called covid-19 contact exposure notifications, with the aim of improving traceability in the country.

“We have carried this strategy for months, always trying to keep the process completely anonymous and keeping the confidentiality of the data of each of the patients. Today people who own iPhone phones from version 12.5, have received a message from the manufacturer notifying that the Minsa has enabled the process. We guide that it be accepted by each of the citizens so that the strategy can be massive ”, indicated the administrator of the AIG.

Oliva pointed out that the application will notify if a person with covid-19 was at least 2 meters away for a period of 10 minutes, in the same way it will voluntarily allow contacts to anonymously know that they were in contact with the patient positive.

The information will allow Health authorities to connect with people at risk to apply tests and treatments against coronavirus.

On the other hand, the AIG administrator reported that the platforms of the Minsa, Social Security Fund (CSS) and private hospitals have been integrated to report the results of the tests by text message.

MINSA PLEADS TO THOSE WHO TRAVELED TO THE INTERIOR TO TAKE A COVID-19 TEST ON THEIR RETURN TO THE CAPITAL

The Ministry of Health (Minsa) urged those who decided to travel to the interior of the country for the days of Carnival to take the swab test upon their return to the capital.

“We call on the population to attend the swab centers, especially those who have traveled to the interior of the country these carnival days, that gives them peace of mind and they can continue their daily activity without Covid-19,” reiterated Esmeralda Martínez, national head of Hisopados del Minsa.

The Minsa highlighted that in recent weeks there has been a considerable drop in the attendance of people to the swab centers in the regions of Panama, but that has not been a reason to insist to the population about the importance of taking the test before the suspected symptoms.

This Monday, the Minsa inaugurated a new fast car for swabs in the parking lots of the Romel Fernández Stadium.

It is estimated that this fast car will have the capacity to perform up to 100 Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) tests, per hour, from Monday to Sunday from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm by spontaneous demand including this Tuesday of Carnival and ash wednesday.

With this there are 8 fast cars nationwide, in Coclé (Ángel María Herrera College parking lot); Panama Oeste (Town Center parking lots); San Miguelito (Gran Estación de San Miguelito, Brisas del Golf, Don Bosco School), Panama Este Alcaldía  of Chepo and the Metropolitan Region (parking lots for Colegio Remón Cantera and parking lots for Rommel Fernández stadium).

HOW DIFFICULT IS IT TO CHANGE THE VACCINES AGAINST THE NEW STRAINS?

In the coming days, the first vaccines from AstraZeneca / University of Oxford and the second batch from the pharmaceutical duo Pfizer / BioNTech should arrive in Panama. Authorities have yet to confirm the exact date. BTW, this guy looks like he’s trying to defuse a bomb – amazing concentration!

There are two latent fears in the scientific community with the appearance of new variants of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, which causes the Covid-19 disease. The first is that the defenses that are generated after an infection do not work against the new variants and the second is that the vaccines may lose efficacy due to the changes caused by these new strains.

After a year of health crisis and a full-fledged race to produce and distribute Covid-19 vaccines, three variants of the coronavirus suddenly emerged in the UK, South Africa and Brazil and spread rapidly in other countries.

The questions among the population are: how will the vaccines work against these variations of the coronavirus; how difficult it is to modify vaccines if the pathogen becomes more resistant; how long the adjustments would take.

The main manufacturers ensure that their compounds will continue to work against these new mutations; however, some have already been known to lose some efficacy against the strain from South Africa.

Last week it was reported in international media that the vaccine from the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca / University of Oxford protected less against mild and moderate cases of Covid-19 disease caused by the South African variant, although these are small investigations and for now it seems that doses will continue to protect against severe cases and hospitalizations.

REGULATORY GUIDE

In this scenario, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) is developing regulatory guidance for those manufacturers planning changes to existing vaccines to address new variants.

The regulatory agency has asked all vaccine developers to investigate whether their vaccine can offer protection against new variants, such as those identified in the UK, South Africa or Brazil, and to submit the relevant data.

The EMA is still clarifying its regulatory approach for adaptations that may be necessary to ensure that effective vaccines remain available, not only for Europeans, but also for people around the world suffering from the pandemic.

VACCINE ADEQUACY

Updating a vaccine is not something new and is done every year with seasonal flu. It all depends on the technological platform used for its development.

In the case of vaccines based on the messenger RNA molecule (based on ribonucleic acid), such as that from Pfizer / BioNTech, or on viral vectors, such as that of AstraZeneca / University of Oxford, the update would complete quite quickly.

Javier Nieto, infectologist and former member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Ministry of Health (Minsa), explained that it is not so complicated to reformulate a vaccine to make it more effective against a specific variant and, in fact, it would take about six weeks in the case of vaccines of messenger RNA.

The reason is because we know the genome of the virus and the specific mutations that have been identified, added the infectologist.

In other words, only the fragment of the virus’s genetic code that contains the new mutation needs to be updated.

Indeed, Ugur Sahin, CEO and co-founder of BioNTech, argued at a press conference of the pharmaceutical company Pfizer that the beauty of messenger RNA technology is that you can start directly to design a vaccine that completely mimics this new mutation. And he claimed that they are able to provide a vaccine within six weeks.

The story seems to be different with that of the viral vector, since in the presentation of its annual earnings report the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca reported that they are working with researchers from the University of Oxford to adapt the vaccine “to new strains of the disease, if necessary ”.

The company, based in Cambridge, UK, expects to cut the time required for its production by six to nine months.

EVALUATION OF EFFECTIVENESS

Jean Paul Carrera, virologist and epidemiologist at the Gorgas Memorial Institute for Health Studies, agreed with Nieto that it is not difficult to adapt vaccines, but he wondered how much they would have to reformulate if transmission continues to be high at a global level and the most more variants are likely to appear.

He argued that the new variants have in common a mutation known as N501Y, which is associated with an increased infectivity.

The three main variants circulate in America. At least 19 countries in the region have detected a variant. In Panama, a case of the South African strain was confirmed.

EXPERTS BELIEVE THAT COVID WILL REMAIN, BUT IN A MILDER FORM

Experts predict that Covid will remain, but in a milder form.

What if COVID-19 never goes away?

Experts say that some version of the disease is likely to persist for years. But it is not so clear how it will be in the future.

Will it eventually be eliminated by a global vaccination campaign, like smallpox? Will vaccines have an effect on dangerous new variants? Or will the virus linger for a long time, morphing into a mild annoyance, like the common cold?

Over time, the virus known as SARS-CoV-2 and which has already killed more than 2 million people worldwide, will become “another animal in the zoo”, joining the many other infectious diseases with the that humanity has learned to live, says Dr. T. Jacob John, who studies viruses and led India’s efforts to combat polio and AIDS.

But no one knows for sure. The virus is evolving rapidly and new variants are appearing in different countries. The risk of these new variants was highlighted when the pharmaceutical company Novavax Inc. discovered that its vaccine did not work as well against the mutations that were circulating in Britain and South Africa. The more the virus spreads, experts say, the more likely a new variant is capable of circumventing current tests, treatments and vaccines.

For now, scientists agree on the immediate priority: vaccinate as many people as possible as soon as possible. The next step is less safe and depends largely on the strength of immunity offered by vaccines and natural infections and how long it lasts.

“Will people be subject to repeated frequent infections? We still don’t have enough data to know, ”said Jeffrey Shaman, a virus expert at Columbia University. Like many researchers, he believes that the chances of vaccines conferring lifelong immunity are slim.

If humans are to learn to live with COVID-19, the nature of that coexistence depends not only on how long immunity lasts, but also on how the virus evolves.

CAPIRA SANITARY FENCE ELIMINATED: WHICH CONTROL POSTS REMAIN?

Some checkpoints will remain active.

The health fence for the provinces of Panama and Panama Oeste will be lifted as of February 17, the Ministry of Health reiterated this Friday, through Executive Decree No. 74 of February 12, 2021.

However, the document indicates that the sanitary control posts or any other that is considered for the fulfillment of the measures provided in this decree will be maintained.

The Capira sanitary fence (in the El Lago spa) and the Chepo police station are eliminated and checkpoints will be established in their place.

In addition, to ensure compliance with measures such as curfew and total quarantine, the health checkpoints will be maintained in Divisa (Herrera), La Villa (Los Santos), the Chagres sector (Colón) and Viguí (Chiriquí).

The Minsa warns that random swabs may be carried out at these checkpoints.

On the other hand, the decree also makes official that, as of February 15, the curfew will govern from 10:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m.

To take into account that for Panama, Panama Oeste, Coclé, Los Santos, Herrera and Veraguas the total quarantine is maintained on weekends.

Likewise, from the next week activities such as car washes, tailors, shoe stores, creative and cultural industries, as well as industry in general, will be reactivated.

While the establishments may operate until 9:00 p.m., less during the days of total quarantine.

INVESTIGATION REVEALS THAT SOME EXCHANGED THE VALE DIGITAL FOR MONEY

The Government Innovation Authority (AIG) launched a platform where citizens can create a pin with the aim of preventing someone else from using their funds, in addition to misusing them.

Luis Oliva, director of the AIG, said that this platform also allows citizens to see all the latest transactions, the detail of consumption, when the recharge was made as if it were an online banking. In this way, the citizen will be able to know if there is a strange movement in his account.

“Yesterday I received 30 thousand pin creation requests, of which 25 thousand were successful, 2 thousand had some problem in the creation of the passwords because they have numbers, letters and a capital letter and this was the main problem we noticed,” he said. Olive.

The official said that the expectation is that for the March recharge all beneficiaries will have a pin.

Oliva confirmed that 2,900 transactions have been reported, out of 12 million approved transactions, and despite the fact that the percentage of those reported is very low, it is being proactive to prevent this from happening. “We have been admonishing supermarkets and businesses to prevent people from passing the identity card to another person in exchange for cash,” he said.

He also indicated that they have certified that some businesses have exchanged the voucher for money, and part of the investigation that is being carried out is based on this.

“This type of system requires to be evolving and increasing security measures. The pin will not be the only measure that we implement, there will be others that we will be announcing, ”he said.

To create this pin, the beneficiary must enter the web page panamadigital.gob.pa, click on the banner that says create a pin and fill in the spaces.

ATTENTION! A NEW VARIANT OF THE CORONAVIRUS IS DETECTED IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

Scientists detected a new variant of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.

An international team of scientists has detected a new variant of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus in southern California and has verified that 44 percent of the samples collected and studied in January corresponded to that variant.

The results of their research are published today in the Journal of the American Medical Association, where researchers have confirmed that the new variants become predominant through an evolutionary selection process that is not well understood.

The researchers themselves have corroborated in the publication the confusion that the indistinct use of the terms “variant”, “strain” or “lineage” is generating in recent weeks, both in the media and in scientific publications.

The terminology reflects the basic replication biology of RNA viruses that results in the introduction of mutations throughout the viral genome, scientists have found that when specific mutations, or sets of mutations, are selected through numerous rounds of viral replication, a new variant may emerge.

If the sequence variation produces a virus with clearly different phenotypic characteristics, the variant is called a strain, and when a new variant is detected as a distinct branch in a phylogenetic tree through genetic sequencing and phylogenetic analysis, then a new lineage is born. , but in the case of southern California, researchers speak of “variant.”

Scientists have pointed out that during the initial phase of the pandemic there were low levels of genetic evolution, but later the original strain was replaced in many regions of the world by new variants that have shown greater efficiency of viral replication in humans.

And they have further corroborated that the data known so far suggest that current vaccines could retain the ability to prevent many hospitalizations and deaths, even in the face of the decrease in overall efficacy that may occur as a result of the variations that are occurring.

Scientists from several American research centers have participated in the research, led by Wenjuan Zhang, from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California.

MORE THAN 30 COMMERCIAL PREMISES HAVE BEEN FINED FOR NOT COMPLYING WITH BIOSECURITY MEASURES

This weekend the operations to verify compliance with the total quarantine and the prohibition of entry to beaches and spas in Panama and Panama Oeste continue.

Gabriel Arroyavez, head of the Joint Sanitary Task Force, said that walks, sale of alcoholic beverages and crowds will not be allowed, in addition, and they are in the footsteps of the clandestine galleras that are still being dismantled.

He also said that so far this year there have been 854 business premises operating, of which 206 owners were cited, and 33 fined. While 108 other people were brought before a justice of the peace.

In the same way, motorized vehicles that perform delivery services are verified to ensure that they have a health card and comply with biosecurity measures.

SCIENTISTS FIND A NEW CORONAVIRUS IN THAI BATS

Bats carry dozens of viruses. Oh, but they’re so darn cute. Will you just look at that little bitty tongue?!?!

Scientists from Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand, found a new type of coronavirus in the blood of five bats.

After analyzing the sample in the laboratory, they discovered that RacCS203 (as they named it), shares 91.5% of its genetic code with SARS-COV-2, which causes covid-19.

Of this new virus, the one most similar to that of covid-19 is called RmYN02, which shares 93.6% of the genetic code with SARS-CoV-2.

However, experts clarify that, despite the similarities, there are also important differences.

Along these lines, the specialists point out that the proteins in the spikes of this virus have a different shape, which is why they cannot bind to human ACE2 cells.

This leads them to think that RacCS203 cannot infect humans, as these cells are its gateway.

Researchers are now trying to test whether the antibodies generated by infected bats are effective in neutralizing SARS-CoV-2. There are indications that this could be the case, which could eventually help treat the symptoms of Covid-19.

In the study they also try to know what is the process of mutation and transformation of coronaviruses, in addition to how they pass from bats to man.

Scientists believe that this mutation that occurs in a second host, another intermediate animal, allows the virus to adhere to ACE2 cells and then affect people.

UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD WILL TEST COVID-19 VACCINE IN CHILDREN

Oxford University to test vaccine for COVID-19 in children.

Oxford University plans to test its coronavirus vaccine for the first time in children, becoming the latest manufacturer to evaluate whether its product is effective among young children.

The trial announced on Saturday seeks to recruit 300 volunteers between the ages of 6 and 17, of whom up to 240 will receive the vaccine for COVID-19 and the others a control against meningitis.

Andrew Pollard, lead investigator for the Oxford trial, noted that although most children who contract the disease do not develop severe disease, “it is important to establish the safety and immune response of the vaccine in children and young people, as some may benefit from vaccination “.

Regulators in more than 50 countries have authorized the widespread use of the Oxford vaccine, which is produced and distributed by pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca, in people over 18 years of age.

Other drug companies are already testing their vaccines in children. Pfizer and BioNTech, whose vaccine has been licensed for ages 16 and over, began trials with 12-year-olds in October. Moderna, for her part, began testing with young people of the same age in December.

According to Pollard, the Oxford tests should help legislators decide whether at some point in the future they want to expand mass vaccination programs to minors to ensure that schools are zones free of the virus and combat its spread among the rest of the population. population.

“For most children, COVID is not really a big problem,” Pollard told The Associated Press. “However, it may be considered a broader use in the future to try to slow the progress of the pandemic. So we are only trying to establish the data that would support that path if lawmakers wanted to move in that direction. “

MITRADEL PUTS A LIMIT ON THE SUSPENSION OF LABOR CONTRACTS

Eleven months have passed since the National Government authorized the suspension of labor contracts in the country and the total number of workers has not yet been restored, which is why the Ministry of Labor and Labor Development (Mitradel)

The Vice Minister of Labor and Labor Development, Roger Tejada reported that the measure of suspension of labor contracts for the emergency period of the coronavirus will have a limit which is contemplated within the bill 541.

For the primary sector, which is made up of livestock, agriculture, fishing and mining and forestry, labor contracts may only be suspended for three more months, while for the secondary sector (industry and construction) a period of six more months will be extended. .

As for the tertiary sector, the Government left a long period of eight months, in which are the companies of tourism, shops, restaurants, health, education, transport and finance.

Tejada said that bill 541 seeks to establish the rights of workers in the midst of the pandemic, secondly, it normalizes the consistent calculations, thirdly, it would establish a return and a roadmap of that suspended worker and finally seeks implement a new policy through the Unemployment Registry, which will accompany these unemployed people after the termination of the employment contract.

To date, some 119 thousand contracts have been reactivated in the midst of the covid-19 pandemic, however, since the reactivation took place in the country, some 7 thousand new job terminations have been registered.

“Today we register 41% of the total reactivations. We also within the measurements of the Labor Observatory and the Employment Directorate have established a projections return metric, we are faced with 119 thousand labor reactivations, we must be between 120 to 122 thousand this month, to be then between 150 to 153 thousand by the end of March. Now we have registered after the suspension when the reactivation occurred, we have registered about 7 thousand disconnections after the worker’s reactivation “, Tejada said in a television medium . ‘

For René Quevedo, an expert in labor issues, the bill is positive, but it must be put in context, so as not to create false expectations.

“Panama lost 289 thousand jobs in 2020, of which, given that the state payroll did not decrease, 259 thousand were salaried from the private sector, which lost 30% of its formal jobs. And given the prevailing level of economic uncertainty, it will lose another 10% in the next 90 days. That is, in the short term, covid-19 will wipe out 40% of salaried jobs in the private sector, “he explained.

He added that the reactivation of the contracts will depend on the reactivation of economic activity in each sector, which is difficult to predict at the moment.

“The validity of the bill 541 would end on December 31, date in which all mobility restrictions should have been lifted and all economic sectors should be functioning normally. However, that does not mean that economic activity and employment will return. at the prepandemic levels, “he added.

He added that the formal employment of the private company went back 15 years and proof of this is that the 615 thousand workers on payroll at the end of 2020 are less than the 618 thousand that were in August 2006.

In addition to that, 70% of jobs in Panama are face-to-face, so while there are quarantines and curfews (of any kind), unemployment will continue to increase. In fact, 3 out of 4 jobs lost to date have been in the 5 sectors most vulnerable to mobility restrictions, such as commerce, agriculture, construction, logistics and hotels / restaurants, Quevedo added.

Although there are no official figures on how much the economy decreased in 2020, it is expected that it will be between 10% and 15%, that the unemployment rate will exceed 20% and that informality will be at 55%. optimism that this 2021 the gross domestic product will grow close to 5%.

Stay safe…  Stay healthy…
