After being pummeled by Murphy’s Law yesterday during the International Day of Observance for all things Murphy, today was, for all intents and purposes, a good day.  As a matter of fact, it started out great and stayed that way (so far… …I hope I’m not jinxing myself).

I try to stay positive even when everything has seemingly gone to hell.  

“We’re getting hit by a flood?  Meh, we needed the rain anyways.”  

“Volcano?!  Sure, but do you realize how fertile the soil will be now??”

But then there was the Coronavirus and just like everyone else, I got worried.  It was the general lack of understanding that was concerning me.  On one hand, the “don’t worry, it’s just a Flu” people were quite compelling.  But, the news coming from colleagues and friends out of China, Italy and Spain told a different story.  Ultimately, a call from a good friend whom I’ve known for 20+ years calls me January 24 and says,

“Brett, sell your investment shares, get your kids out of school, do not take this lightly.  It’s highly infectious, there’s no cure and millions of people around the world are going to die.  Those who get it and live will see life-long lasting respiratory and other medical problems.”  

Well, thank yoooouuuuu Mr Blue Bird of happiness.  He also predicted and estimated 4 million people dead in the USA alone.  Normally, I would just patronize the caller all the while saying to myself, “think of something quick to say Brett, you need to lose this whackjob quickly but politely.”  But this friend was a former military analyst with a few of those Masters degrees in some really spooky crap!!  He’s not the one to steer anyone wrong with gossip, rumors or conspiracy theories.  So, I started to listen more and watch for the case numbers as they slowly grew here and there.  Just like everyone else, I had no idea what was going on with this crisis and was genuinely worried.  The end is nigh, right?

Little by little however, I started to see major changes in human behavior.  Positive changes in behavior that were needed during this crisis but not particularly expected.

  • PRECOVID19:  Employees arriving late without a care in the world if they got fired or not.
  • COVID19:  Employees arriving ontime with a 100% attendance record for 3 straight months and people doing all they could to keep their jobs.

 

  • PRECOVID19:  Very poor drive through service at McDonalds.
  • COVID19:  McDonalds had to close, but when they reopened your drivethru wait time was less than 3 minutes even in the longest of lines.

 

  • PRECOVID19:  Online services are either non-existent or practically void of all merit and poor services.
  • COVID19:  Now, everyone is doing online services even the government and schools and the service is becoming substantially more efficient.  

People are now compelled to be cleaner, healthier and more frugal.

Albert Einstein once said,

“In the midst of every crisis, lies great opportunity.”  

I think we’re inadvertently being steered towards a better way of life, whether we realize it or not and even greater opportunities.

  • PRECOVID19:  My own routine typically involved unintentionally wasting multiple hours every day with massive distractions to my work, life and health.  Most of it was driving!
    • 5:30AM – get up and help some women get these smaller people out the door for something
    • 6:00AM – they leave.
    • 8:00AM – After getting ready, eating, etc I leave for the city and drive for 1 hour or longer.
    • 9:00AM – work in an environment of constant interruptions and distractions.
    • 12:00noon – 13:30PM – search for food
    • 6:00PM – leave to go workout from 6:30-7:30PM
    • 8:00PM – go home
    • 9:00PM – arrive home

That was Monday, Wednesday and Friday every day.  On Tuesdays and Thursdays I would usually just work until 8:00PM and then go home.  All home chores were done by someone else which meant money out of pocket for that, for fuel, tolls, street food, etc.

  • COVID19:  Now, by working from home, I am the master of my own time and space.  I also learned that I have a beautiful wife and children.
    • 7:00AM – get up and have breakfast at my leisure.  
    • 8:00AM – the kids start their virtual classes and I get on the computer to do my emails and plan the day, delegate functions, review update reports from security posts.  
    • 10:00AM – after getting done with the brunt of the day’s work, I take a break for coffee as I sit and watch the hummingbirds in their feeders out back of the house.

The day continues like this, with lunch at home with my newly discovered entire family and then 4 straight, uninterrupted hours of quality work and planning.

    • 5:00PM – by now, I’ve done 3 times the amount of work I was able to do prior to COVID.  I’m still refreshed and awake, whereas before I was practically slumping over at my computer or looking for ways to stay awake including drinking a 4LIFE Energy drink in preparation of my workouts.

Truth be told, I do not workout as I used to.  It wasn’t until this last Monday that I started walking with my boys in the neighborhood, but it’s routine that I can reactivate with plenty of time to spare.  The point is, before I would be available for work usually 8-hours a day on site, but not necessarily to my fullest capacity.  Now, I’m practically craving for more things to do and have hours to spare to work on this daily report, plan the remaining days, resolve annoying problems that I would never before have had time for.

What does POST-COVID19 hold for us?  First, it’s important to understand that it’s only after you’ve lost everything that you’re free to do anything.  You begin to see how the things you own, really truly owned you.  Look at the mass of people heading to the interior since quarantine opened up.  Most were out of work, so they head to the country, focused on something better.  We will now have the opportunity to reevaluate our priorities.  We’ll have the opportunity to have more time with family, less time spent on frivolousness and more invested in quality of life.  We no longer need to impress others with big offices and sofa units with Strinne green stripe patterns.  Instead we take that previous mega rental expense and budget it back to savings.   Those 400,000 people in Panama who are on suspended contracts should now see further clarity in that they do not need celebrity magazines, the latest iPhone, television with 500 channels or the name of some wealthy clothing designer on their underwear.  Our lives have been submerged in a proliferating vegetation of clever commodities, but to what end?  I’m not saying we should go full-blown Marxist, but we do need to focus on what we truly want.  If you don’t know what you want, you end up with a lot you don’t.  Stop feeding the impulse.  Redesign your life.  Take control.  I assure you that as horrible as things may seem now, Post-Covid19 is going to be amazing.

‘THE RESURGENCE OF COVID-19 CASES IS INEVITABLE’

THESE ARE THE CORREGIMIENTOS WITH THE GREATEST COVID-19 CONTAGIO IN THE COUNTRY

MINSA COORDINATES ACTIONS FOR THE REOPENING OF COMPANIES IN CHIRIQUÍ

RUM

Rum is a liquor distilled from sugarcane byproducts — typically sugarcane juice, sugar cane syrup, or molasses. Modern sugar cane rum is usually made using one of three methods: directly fermenting sugar cane juice, creating a concentrated syrup from sugar cane juice and fermenting the result, or processing the juice into molasses and fermenting that. The climate and the soil will impact the final rum taste, which is why rum produced from molasses from Barbados will taste different than a rum made from Dominican molasses, even if the two were distilled in exactly the same place with the same method. The vast majority of rum distillers use molasses to make rum, but not all molasses is created equally.

One of the many things we were forced to cancel this year was our annual Rum Tasting (Cata de Rones) that we hold for a small group of friends or clients in our home.  This year, we were going to host it potentially TODAY in Pedasi as part of our yearly Pedasi fishing run that we do.  With the appearance of the Coronavirus, obviously, all that got shot down.

In our tastings, we would bring several familiar faces like Flor de Caña from Nicaragua, but we would also introduce a few new ones.  There are two rums that always make high marks amongst our consumers.  ZACAPA, which is the more well-known of the higher end rums we present.  But last year, one rum surprisingly came home with the gold ribbon and the coveted International Mikkelson Residence Award for Rum Excellence.  Yes, it’s the “I’M RARE” award.

Caressed here by the plump sausage-fingered hands of yours truly was the 2019 winner, ZAFRA, which is an export rum of Panama.  They make it here, but you can´t get it here.  Them crafty, evil bastards really know how to complicate things for us good folk.

ZAFRA’s aroma is rich with dark fruit and devoid of the light alcohols aged far less than this blend of rums. Unlike most aged rums, this Panamanian rum is aged at least 21 years in used American bourbon whiskey barrels. The body is smooth, slightly viscous and leads to a slightly dry smoky tobacco and charred oak finish.
