For those of you who didn’t already figure it out, I love attention. Hahaha. I’m not full on HPD (Histrionic personality disorder), but I do like a good dose of attention every now and again. Who doesn’t though, right? Of course, when I’m working, that’s another story. I do whatever possible to stay low-key even to the point of not letting anyone know when I have to travel. But it’s that desire for attention that piqued my interest in that cute little girl attending the reception counter of Nike Panama so many years ago. There she was, with that beaming smile and sparkling eyes, I stuttered my way through a line that I had rehearsed many times before, which was “Hello. My name is Brett Mikkelson. I have an appointment with Mr __________ which is personal in nature.” Instead, I probably said something like “Hi. Uuuuhhhhhhhhhhh what floor is this? Um, I would like to, um, there’s a person who works here who wants to see me, but I forgot, um…. Do you have a bathroom?” And then I wished that the world would just swallow me up and make me disappear forever.

Lucky for me, she just kept on smiling and let me fumble along until I finally got it right. I finally got to my meeting, which was the beginning of an important future with a group of good people. As I left, I also left a business card with the cute receptionist. For those of you who are new entrepreneurs, this is very important. Always leave a business card with secretaries and receptionists especially if you treated them right and their treatment of you was reciprocal. It’s not about getting future wives as was my case, but it does have to do with getting and maintaining clients. Bosses get hundreds if not thousands of business cards throughout the years. But when they need someone, they can’t find that card or remember the name. Secretaries and receptionists are your backup for future business.

Yep, that was the first time I ever met Queen Sayira.  We didn’t even start dating until 2 years after that first meet, but any time I would see her, that little tingly feeling would creep back and cause me to mumble and studder.  And she’d just smile with that massive Queen Sayira smile.

And of course, on the other end of that spectrum, I can’t stand when she ignores me.  Holy crap that drives me nuts.  I can literally feel the back of my head explode like a watermelon in a Gallagher comedy act.

Gallagher and the watermelon that brought him to fame.

The advantage we have during this pandemic is that we get to spend a lot more time together. It’s beautiful. The downside of this pandemic is that we get to spend a lot more time together. It’s a disaster. In our efforts to pass the time, we look to our electronic brain mush instruments (computer, cell phone, Nintendo, Alexa). For some, there is an over abundance of extra time to be had, which in turn takes us deeper into the mush machines and ironically distracts us from those around us. The first days of quarantine threw us back together under one roof, where we would have all three meals together. Praying together three times a day was unheard of before this. Before this, it was impossible to coordinate and now it was three times a day… FOUR times a day including bedtime.

Then our routines became even softer than our brains did.  It started to get “lame” for the boys to take the time to sit with us for lunch, because as always, there was a friend of theirs online, waiting for them to get back to a game.  Queen Sayira started a few more chat groups and seemed peeled to the 2×4-inch flat screen on her phone ready to answer the next chat the second it came in.  If her sisters called, I was doomed.  That was a 2-hour marathon of them laughing uncontrollably over a soup recipe (true story).  Even I had been looking for things to do at the office, downtown, for the sake of reconnecting with people.  Last night I decided that today was going to be a different day.  Today, we would reconnect like we did back in March and we would have our meals together, pray together and laugh about non-soup related topics.  We would have a bountiful array of topics fitting for a family of 4.  We would just giggle and smirk until it was time for bed.

The morning started off well enough. Breakfast started a bit late, the boys started school at 8AM as usual, but Queen Sayira’s turn for breakfast got done on time for them to… take their plates to their terminals and eat during class. OK, that’s fine, that’s not their fault. We’ll try again later. Seeing as everyone was busy, I headed out to the office to do important things like coordinating, typing, screenshotting, ordering people around, cracking stupid jokes that my guys were instructed to laugh at “or else”, answering phones, sending emails and saying “no” as often as possible. After a fulfilling day, I returned to the Mikkelson Homestead just in time for an early dinner with my three quarantine-mates. Of course, as a preventive measure, I ran quickly to the bathroom to shower and rid myself of any unwanted virus-riddled droplets that I may have run across in my day-time endeavors.

I quickly returned to the dining room only to find Queen Sayira sitting alone, two plates of food and offspring nowhere to be seen.

“Where are the boys?”, I prodded as she clicked away at her personalized brain musher. Nothing. Silence. “Hello there – everything ok?”, I insisted.

“Huh? Yeah, why?” I caught myself grinding my molars. Bad habit.

“Where. Are. The. Boys?”, I was getting tense and could feel something growing in the back of my mushier-than-normal brain.

Seemingly irritated by my insistence, she huffed, “I said they could eat while they played online with their friends.”

“Go to your happy place, Brett”, I thought to myself. I continued to indulge my thoughts with me-to-me psych babble, “Look on the bright side, at least you can sit with your queen and have a nice quiet meal together.” I relaxed, smiled and sat down, suggesting to her that we both just put our cell phones away for a few minutes. She agreed.

Apparently however, the dining chair adjustment process nullifies all prior agreements to a temporary cease and desist of any and all use of electronic apparatus whether they be portable or larger in nature, because the second I accommodated my chair, to secure a better forward cutting angle as I attacked my food, as well as a more acceptable view of my Queen, her cell phone rang. She answered. It was her sister. I was screwed. My semi-excessive need for approval was being denied once again. I’m not sure how many minutes it took them, but before I knew it, they were cackling again about soup. Soup… Tension rising. Soup? Heartbeat climbing. Soup!?!? Upper left eyelid twitching… SOUP!!!!! Then almost out of nowhere, BOOM! Watermelon splattered against the wall behind me. I could feel it run down the back of my neck and shirt.

Queen Sayira addressed her sister one more time, “I’ll have to call you back.” She looked at me with what I thought was a hint of concern. Then she spoke, “You know….”, she lowered her head and her attention was back to her meal. She continued indifferently, “You’re going to have to clean that mess up, because I ain’t gonna do it!” The Queen’s declaration was final. But then, there’s always tomorrow…

TOP NEWS and TIDBITS

Yoli’s Summary

Significant progress is seen in the development of coronavirus vaccines with several quite well advanced and with the prospect of ready-to-use doses in the population at risk by the end of 2020 or the beginning of 2021. There are also important efforts to ensure that these vaccines they also reach the neediest population in low- and middle-income countries, in quantity and opportunity. All this facilitated by the World Health Organization (WHO), the BMGF (more popularly known as the Gates Foundation), the GAVI Vaccine Alliance, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovation (CEPI) and other governmental and non-governmental organizations.

Many of these vaccines will be produced by new technological platforms, not yet used in the production of vaccines in general, and therefore it is necessary to understand them, study them, clearly identify the pros and cons, and be ready to give answers with evidence and clarity. to the population when they ask. Therefore, it is up to the health, regulatory and, on the other hand, producers to explain the processes, the results of clinical studies and the possible adverse events that these could cause.

The FDA, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the European Commission (EC) have developed very important guiding documents to take into account when registering these new vaccines, and have promoted regulatory cooperation to combat COVID-19.

Country leaders need to maintain transparent communication with their populations, providing the information they have, the best available evidence on the safety and efficacy of vaccines.

Not all vaccines will have the same stability against changes in temperature, those stable at ambient temperatures being easier to handle. But what will happen to those that need refrigeration or freezing? All this has an impact on the distribution of the vaccine and its efficacy (since vaccines kept at inadequate temperatures lose it) in each of our countries.

We must consider that introducing a coronavirus vaccine in a country is only part of the great challenge. The main one is to ensure that a good level of immunization is achieved in the population. There has been a lot of talk about herd immunity, which is the level of immunity the population reaches when an epidemic begins to decline because there are no longer enough people to infect. But this is achieved by combining two fundamental aspects: the efficacy of the vaccine on the one hand and the vaccination coverage (proportion of the population that receives it) on the other. We can have a very effective vaccine, like the measles vaccine, but if coverage is low, we will continue to have outbreaks. The situation is complicated if two or three doses are needed for a vaccine to achieve the desired efficacy.

An option to consider, and to think about from now on, is to require the mandatory application of the vaccine. This measure has proven to be very effective in epidemic cases in many countries of all income levels. This will surely generate commitments and conflicts, as opposition to vaccination causes a confrontation between the individual right not to be vaccinated and the responsibility of each individual to contribute to community or herd immunity. The decision must take into account that, by immunizing myself, I am contributing to collective health, especially that of higher-risk subpopulations, such as grandparents, people with chronic diseases, health and security workers. And alsoto a job and economic openness that is a very important aspect of the health of a community, particularly for those who depend on their daily wages to meet their minimum needs. In exchange for this commitment, the population has the right to expect to be given a vaccine with adequate characteristics, which should alert politicians who, for reasons not related to health (and yes with electoral calculations), wish to unreasonably accelerate the Timelines necessary to ensure that vaccines meet the minimum safety and efficacy requirements before being administered to the public. Meanwhile, various treatments to decrease mortality are being investigated and used, including several mentioned in previous articles on the subject.

While the health authorities work on these tasks, we – as citizens – cannot forget the measures that are within our reach, maintaining social distance, wearing the masks in public and frequently washing our hands to protect ourselves, while living this transition that will still take a few months.

PANAMA COORDINATES ACQUISITION OF VACCINES AGAINST COVID-19

Experimental vaccine against COVID-19.

The Panamanian President, Laurentino Cortizo, announced that the acquisition of vaccines against COVID-19 is coordinated through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Panama and the Ministry of Health “so as not to be waiting on a list” when their use has already been authorized .

During his speech at an event in San Miguelito, Cortizo reported that he is managing to acquire a significant amount of vaccines such as those being developed by Moderna Inc. or the University of Oxford,

“the Republic of Panama is already making progress on that path , since God is very likely to have a good vaccine by the end of this year, the beginning of next year (2021) ”.

The Panamanian president expressed that vaccines are mainly for those who “are in that first line of battle” against COVID-19.

It should be noted that the University of Oxford last April began human clinical trials of a coronavirus vaccine, while experts from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Moderna Inc. hope to submit tries his first experimental vaccine for virus protection.

HOSPITAL PAITILLA INITIATES APPLICATION OF CONVALING PLASMA TREATMENT IN ITS PATIENTS

Thanks to a first plasma donor, Hospital Paitilla applied the convalescent plasma treatment for the first time to a patient with COVID-19, who is in the intensive care unit of its facilities.

The Paitilla Hospital began receiving donations of convalescent plasma from people recovered from COVID-19, to benefit patients with the virus. Before transfusion, the method of inactivation or sterilization of pathogens was applied to blood products.

Paitilla is the first private hospital center in Panama to offer this international security protocol, said Benito Castillo, head of the hospital’s blood bank.

Plasma is the liquid part of blood that is collected from patients who have recovered from the new coronavirus disease, COVID-19, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Patients recovered with COVID-19 develop antibodies in the blood against the virus. Antibodies are proteins that fight the virus and can help save the lives of other patients. “In this blood bank we implement international security protocols.

In a regulatory manner, before performing a transfusion, we apply the method of inactivation or sterilization of pathogens in blood products.

We inactivate the germs, viruses or parasites transmissible by transfusion, through physical and chemical laboratory processes. Through selection filters we discard risky donors or contaminations ”, explained Castillo.

He added that pathogen inactivation reduces risks of post-transfusion adverse reactions, such as acute transfusion-associated lung injury (TRALI), non-hemolytic fevers, and post-transfusion graft-versus-host disease (GVHD).

First, the blood sample is taken from the donor, and then, the pathogens are inactivated in the plasma through physical and chemical processes.

Finally, the patient is transfused with COVID-19.

If you have been infected with COVID-19 and have recovered, you can help save lives. Donate your plasma. Your blood may contain antibodies that fight the virus and can help save the lives of other patients.

The main requirements for donating are: being 18 years of age or older, preferably male, if female, you should never have been pregnant, have evidence of the diagnosis of COVID-19 (have a positive test) and SARSCoV2 antigen test, have availability. In addition, you must have an antibody test (IgA, IgM and IgG) to verify that you are recovered from the virus and have 14 days without symptoms of COVID-19.

OXFORD UNIVERSITY COVID-19 VACCINE PROJECT WOULD OFFER DOUBLE PROTECTION

Ongoing research by Oxford University to develop a vaccine against Covid-19 indicates that it would offer the double level of protection sought by scientists, British media reported Thursday, July 16.

Questioned by AFP, the university simply indicated that part of the vaccine’s safety results will be published in The Lancet medical journal next Monday.

According to the Daily Telegraph, the first phase of human clinical trials has shown that the vaccine generates an immune response against the virus, with antibodies and T lymphocytes, “killer cells” against infection.

“It is the combination of the two that we hope will protect people,” added the same source in the Daily Telegraph columns, “It is an important moment, but there is still a long way to go.”

However, these results, described as “extremely promising” by a high-level anonymous source cited by the newspaper, do not yet know what the duration of protection offered by the vaccine would be.

This project, in collaboration with the Astrazeneca laboratory, is considered one of the most promising among the multitude of works in progress in the world.

The University of Oxford, whose project is also funded by the UK government, has entered into a partnership with the Pharmaceutical Laboratory for the global manufacture and distribution of the developing vaccine, so that it can be made available quickly and massively in case of success.

The vaccine developed by the Oxford researchers is based on a modified adenovirus, which generally affects chimpanzees.

According to the university, “it generates a strong immune response with a single dose and it is not a virus that replicates,” so “it cannot cause continuous infection in the vaccinated individual.”

CORTIZO APPOINTS COMMUNITY TRACEABILITY PROMOTERS OF COVID-19

President Laurentino Cortizo and his team at the Orlando Winter Gym.

“From the Traceability Center we have mixed patrols, control points and a rapid response team,” he said, after visiting San Miguelito.

The President of the Republic, Laurentino Cortizo, met this Thursday, July 16, with the Unified Traceability Team (EUT) in San Miguelito to adopt measures to strengthen their actions in this fight against Covid-19.

Cortizo indicated that the EUT volunteers incorporate the direct participation of the communities through their grassroots leaders.

He added that “from the Traceability Center we have mixed patrols, control points and a rapid response team that assist the house with positive cases, follow up to prevent further contagion and deliver mega bags of food so that they do not leave House”.

He also stated that, “I have verified the dynamics with which the EUT works. It is a first-level inter-institutional team that acts on the battlefront against Covid-19. His vocation and commitment are an example. I thanked them on behalf of all Panamanians.”

Cortizo took advantage of the moment to, from the Orlando Winter Gym, appoint a great team of promoters who will be warriors in Community Traceability in the battle against Covid-19.

MARITIME COMPANIES ADVOCATE TO MAINTAIN 100 THOUSAND JOBS

More than 100 thousand jobs generated in the maritime, logistics and port sector intend to save the Panama Maritime Chamber (CMP) through the financing plan presented by the Government.

Nicolás Vukelja, president of the CMP, said that they have started communications with the different government entities for access to funds and comfortable financing for the companies of the union, especially for the auxiliary maritime industry.

“Many companies in our union are affected with a decrease in this first semester of up to 50% of their average monthly turnover, and some companies in the sector have not been able to start operations,” explained Vukelja.

More than half of the members of the Chamber correspond to micro, small and medium-sized companies (Mipyme) with gross annual turnover of less than $ 2.5 million.

Vukelja explained that since the beginning of this month they have been in contact with the management and directions of the National Bank of Panama, the Savings Bank, the management of the Authority for Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (Ampyme), the National Secretariat of Science Technology and Innovation (Senacyt) and other government authorities, to coordinate meetings and learn the steps for access to economic assistance programs.

Among the micro-enterprises in the maritime sector are those that offer all kinds of services or products to the industry: food and water distribution to ships, fuel barges, pilotage, ship repair, boat service, shipping suppliers, diving, shipping brokers. insurance, repair of maritime containers, security and maritime protection, among others.

It is about giving support to companies with liquidity limitations, as well as serving those that are dedicated to the development of research, innovation and technology, as entrepreneurs of the union.

In the maritime sector, there are small and medium-sized companies that develop in niche markets, such as technical services to ships that arrive in the country and that carry out repair, maintenance and supply work, among others. In turn, these are offered in marinas, ports, domestic docks and small berths that represent the livelihood for many Panamanian families, he said.

Most of these companies are within Block 2 of the economy. “The economic health of companies in the maritime sector is important to maintain the multiplying factor of jobs, since for each direct job it is multiplied by two or more people, which would strengthen and reactivate the country’s economy,” added Vukelja.

Since the pandemic began, the maritime, logistics and port sectors have operated 24 hours a day, every day, but there have been limitations to continue with the number of jobs, he added.

There have been other factors that have also affected the maritime sector, among them, the closure of the Tocumen International Airport, the reduction of transits through the Panama Canal, the drop in world trade and tourism, in addition to the operating limitations of marinas, hotels and other auxiliary services.

APATEL DEMANDS SUSPENSION OF CONTRACT TO SICARELLE HOLDINGS COMPANY

Around 14 hotels in Panama are being used as hotel-hospitals due to the difficult health situation.

The company is being severely questioned for the health services it provides in hotel-hospitals.

The hotel sector of Panama demanded this Thursday from the National Government the temporary suspension of the contract to the company Sicarelle Holdings, Inc., in charge of the cleaning and disinfection service of 1,315 hotel-hospital rooms that house patients diagnosed by Covid-19 a Nacional level.

In a statement, the Panamanian Hotel Association (APATEL) questioned the management of the company hired for this purpose due to its lack of experience in health issues and asked the Ministry of Health for a public and open statement on non-compliance with biosafety protocols for hygiene tasks in hotels.

“We demand the temporary suspension of the contract with Sicarelle Holdings, Inc. until the competent authorities investigate the allegations made in the different national media, confirm the accreditations of the company, fully identify its final shareholders, confirm the correct contracting process public and verify strict compliance with their obligations,” said the hotel union in a public note addressed to the health authorities.

After declaring a national state of emergency, following the infection with the virus responsible for Covid-19, several hotels in the country offered their facilities to meet the objective of hosting positive patients for this virus.

Such agreements were requested and coordinated by personnel from the Panama Tourism Authority (ATP) and the Ministry of Health, in which the National Government would guarantee the provision of cleaning, laundry and food services to patients confined in hotels.

In each of the negotiations held with the associated hotels of APATEL, the authorities appealed to the need to be “solidary”, alleging a lack of budget for this purpose on the part of the Nation.

The disagreement of the hoteliers has been palpable, because after having transferred their facilities, until now the agreed payments have not been met, plunging these businesses into a deep crisis of non-payment to third parties, threatening their existence.

According to APATEL, it is mandatory to open an expedited bidding process for the services provided by third parties for this purpose, which will ensure reasonable and competitive costs for the country and absolute transparency.

The hotel guild urges the participation of independent civic groups in the new contracting process to guarantee this transparency and requires the Comptroller General to audit the contracting process, which includes a sustained opinion on the competitiveness of the charges made and the payments made. To the date.

Exemplary sanctions are also required by the directors and shareholders of the companies whose breaches or abuses have been verified by the competent authorities, the immediate payment of the outstanding debts with the contracted hotels and exhorting the associates of the hotel association to refrain from making agreements that do not ensure public transparency in the provision of outsourced services contracted by the authorities.

PANAMA INTERNATIONAL PACKAGE DELIVERY REMAINS CLOSED SINCE APRIL

Panama suspended the international parcel delivery and delivery service in April.

Panama has suspended the international parcel delivery and delivery service since last April, the Directorate General of Post of Panama of the Ministry of Government reported on Thursday.

This after it became known that the United States Postal Service issued an alert of temporary suspension of the acceptance of international mail from at least 14 countries, including Panama, due to the impacts of the service by COVID-19.

Given this, the director of Post and Telegraphs of Panama, Julio Ramírez, stated that “all the countries of the Universal Postal Union can make the decision to accept or not correspondence from any country for security measures.”

The General Post Office of Panama explains that the suspension of the international parcel delivery and delivery service was suspended after the closure of the Tocumen International Airport due to the pandemic and for being the only reference operating agent that works with this entity in shipping postal charge.

It indicates that the public will be notified once the parcel service is reactivated, taking into account all the measures of the Ministry of Health to avoid infections by COVID-19.

On the other hand, it indicates that the Postal Service of Panama continues to offer its postal money orders, money transfers and parcels nationwide on Mondays and Thursdays from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm, and on Wednesdays from 11: 00 am at 3:00 p.m.

ASTRAZENECA ADVANCES BEFORE IMMINENT GOOD VACCINE RESULTS

AstraZeneca Plc made progress after a medical journal will be reported to release positive news about the coronavirus vaccine the company is developing with researchers from the University of Oxford.

The Lancet will publish the results of the first tests of the vaccine on people, perhaps on Thursday, according to information from the ITV.com website, which cited unidentified sources. AstraZeneca rose 4% in London.

Pharmaceutical laboratories are working at full blast to test vaccines in people as soon as possible to help prevent the coronavirus, which has claimed the lives of nearly 600,000 people worldwide.

On Tuesday, Moderna Inc. released results from a preliminary phase trial in 45 people that showed its vaccine raised levels of antibodies to the coronavirus, and announced that it is preparing for advanced trials.

There are about 160 experimental coronavirus vaccines at various stages of development, the World Health Organization noted.

The Oxford vaccine has already started the final phase tests. AstraZeneca indicated that it is possible to start delivering doses of the vaccine as early as September.

An AstraZeneca representative declined to comment.

LONDON ACCUSES RUSSIAN HACKERS OF WANTING TO STEAL INFORMATION ABOUT COVID-19 VACCINE

The British cybersecurity agency on Thursday accused a group of hackers who “almost certainly” work for the Russian intelligence services for trying to steal information about the coronavirus vaccine projects.

The National Cybersecurity Center (NCSC) said the pirates’ targets were vaccine research and development agencies in the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada and that their allegations are backed by the American and Canadian authorities. .

“The NCSC evaluates that (the group) APT29, also called Dukes (Dukes) or Cozy Bear (Nice Bear) almost certainly operates as part of the Russian intelligence services,” he said before adding that the United States and Canada are of the same opinion. .

British Foreign Minister Dominic Raab expressed his outrage at this finding, which was released along with tips for organizations themselves to protect themselves from cyber attacks.

“It is totally unacceptable that the Russian Intelligence Services are targeting those who are working to combat the coronavirus pandemic,” he said.

“While others pursue their own interests with irresponsible behavior, the United Kingdom and its allies are working hard to find a vaccine that protects everyone’s health.

“The UK will continue to counter those who carry out these cyberattacks, and work with allies to hold those responsible to account.”

I had mentioned my interest in getting back into shape and finally just took the plunge towards doing it on Monday. I gained nearly 20 lbs and am at a total of 255lbs. Bad Brett. Today marks the 4th day of me kicking my own butt, but I definitely couldn’t do it without trainer Alejandro Castroverde (Nephew and Coach), my wonderful Sayira Castroverde (Wife, Queen and Photographer) as well as a myriad of other influential people who are constantly pushing me to do better, be better.

One such person, friend, client, family who has now become MY advisor by telling me an interesting truth. “If you write it in your daily report, you’ll feel obligated to do it and succeed.” I feel he’s right. I won’t write about this daily, but I will do an update every two weeks. Hopefully, maybe, it could be inspiring for others. Maybe even just one person. Just the same, it only takes a decision and for that decision to lead to action. Nike couldn’t have said it better. Just Do It.

TBNM – 4 = Todo Bueno, nada malo, day 4. Working theropes.
Putting my stuff up. Stretching with Alejo.

Stay safe… Stay healthy… And by all means (unless you need to Just Do It) STAY HOME!!…
