Physical farce and slapstick were seemingly the cornerstone to my last weekend.  I took the brunt of the multiple mental parities of The Three Stooges.  Moe was embodied in someone; else however, I quickly learned firsthand how the intense physicality of their punchlines was no joke in real life.

I’ve recently upped my woodworking game and actually took a formal course, learning how to mold and form rough pieces of wood into whatever my little heart desires.  I’ve worked with wood since I was a kid, but never did I get a formal course and just the same, there have been so many changes in methodology and technique over the past 40 years.  The course was 16 hours spread out over 4 Saturdays and it was worth every penny.

A good friend of mine, Steven Pehrson, who used to live in Pedasi, gifted me a table that he built himself out of driftwood he found washed up on the shores of Arenal Beach.  The pieces were rough-cut by design and on purpose, except for the tabletop that was finished with polyurethane. However, because of the saltwater, the nails that were used were rusting and the glue had separated the top from the bottom assembly.  It was time to give this bad boy a complete makeover.

I took apart each piece carefully and with a magnet, I started searching for and then removing what I could of the screws and nails until I was confident that all had been removed.  I still needed to give better form to the pieces using my planer and chop saw.  This is where the physical farce started.

Two particular pieces were young hardwood pieces used for the legs of the table.  The tops were not squared to the bottoms, so I needed to take these awkward pieces and square them off using the chopsaw.  A chopsaw is a great invention that cuts to the angle you need if you have the wood properly aligned on your machine.  With the wood aligned with one hand, you bring the blade down with the other, cutting through the piece like a knife through butter in one fell swoop.  However, in a flash, this fine particular piece of oak, hard at its core and harder yet where the hidden piece of iron traversed its spine, rocketed itself at me, lashing out at my left wrist prior to getting caught back into the blade, ripping through the saw’s aluminum structure and disappearing into the dark of the street in front of my house.  My first words were NOT a high-pitched “nyuk-nyuk-nyuk” ala Curly, but I was “soitenly” one for a few choice words.

That’s when Moe incarnate came out from the house, “Whattaya doin messin around, we gots woik ta do!”, she scolded.  I was still in shock, sitting at my worktable trying to figure out what the hell just happened.  The Queen, oops, I mean “Moe”, came over, slapped me on the back of the head telling me to “Bandage that thing you crybaby and stop screwin around!”.  “Here, take this hammer and start separating those other wood pieces over there.”, she said while pointing to the other work bench.

Broken aluminum pieces to the Chop Saw

In pain and still clutching my swollen, throbbing, bleeding arm, (was that too dramatic?), I worked my way to the bench, carefully laying the pieces on the floor, in preparation of separating them one by one with the hammer.  The first few swings went fine but the 4th swing went wild and hit me square in my right ankle, “woob, woob, woob” I yelled out as I fell to the ground, laying there, pivoting on my shoulder and “running” in a circular motion.

“That’s it, no more slapstick comedy crap for me this weekend.”, I told my meany wife.  Time to pour some Brandy Old Fashions.

Apparently, yesterday, Thursday, November 19, 2020, was “International Men’s Day”.  I like to joke around that the Queen is a big meany, bullies me around, treats me harshly, etc.  And… it’s all true!  But, truth be told, thanks to this great gal, Queen, Moe, as long as she’s around, every day is men’s day for me.  Of course, if we celebrated “Men’s Day” in Panama the same way Panamanians celebrate “Mother’s Day”, we’d be cooking and cleaning the whole day through.

Covid-19 travel restrictions state by state

Megan Marples and Forrest Brown, CNN • Updated 16th November 2020

Editor’s Note — This story was current at the time of last publication on November 16 and will be updated periodically. However, you should still check with the official state websites before you commit to travel plans, especially as the Thanksgiving holiday approaches.

(CNN) — With cases of Covid-19 reaching new heights in the United States, some states are having to adapt rapidly with their rules and regulations, especially in recent weeks.

If you wish to travel to another state, it is important to be updated on the latest statewide regulations. While some US states have no restrictions on travel, all their sites have important Covid-19 safety information, including possible face mask mandates in public settings. States without travel restrictions might still have mask mandates.

This list is alphabetical and includes links where you should get more information and updates before you head out:

ALABAMA

As of November 16, there were no statewide travel restrictions in Alabama. However, visitors should be aware of the state’s mask mandate effective through December 11, according to the Montgomery Advertiser newspaper. You can check here for updates.

  • Follow a plan that your employer filed with the state if you come for work.
  • Buy a $250 Covid-19 test when you arrive and self-quarantine at your own expense until you get the results.

Alaska residents also have protocols they must follow for travel. According to the CDC, “people in quarantine should stay home, separate themselves from others, monitor their health, and follow directions from their state or local health department.” Leaving your home state to enter a state with a mandatory quarantine means you need one place to stay and to stay put.  Check here for Alaska details and updates.

YESTERDAY, THE CABINET COUNCIL APPROVED A 48 MILLION DOLLAR PROPOSAL FOR THE PURCHASE OF VACCINES AGAINST COVID -19

The Cabinet Council yesterday approved an item of 48 million dollars for the purchase of vaccines against Covid -19 from the pharmaceutical company Pfizer.

The President of the Republic, Laurentino Cortizo explained that with these funds he seeks to buy 4 million vaccines to apply to two million people, since two doses per person will be necessary.

The president’s statements were made in Chiriquí, during a meeting he held with agricultural producers at the Cold Chain Postharvest Center, in Volcán, where he also invited the population not to lower their guard against the pandemic.

‘The use of the mask is not negotiable, as they are attacking the economy and the health of the country. If you see someone using the mask badly, draw their attention, there is no room for games, ‘he stressed, saying that we won this battle together.

This is the first tour in Chiriquí that the president had after complying with the social quarantine from October 30 to November 12, for having had direct contact with a person who tested positive for the coronavirus.

It should be noted that the American pharmaceutical company Pfizer and the German firm BioNTech reported on Monday that studies of their vaccine against covid-19 demonstrated an efficacy of more than 90% in participants with no previous evidence of infection. In phase three of the study, no safety problems were reported.

Phase three of the trial began on July 27 and according to the EFE agency, it has been applied to 43,538 participants to date, of whom 38,955 received the second dose on November 8.

Pfizer and BioNTech continue to accumulate data on the safety and efficacy of the vaccine and expect to produce 50 million doses this year and 1.3 billion doses in 2021.

PANAMA SOLIDARITY PLAN WINS AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE FROM THE ELECTRONIC GOVERNMENT NETWORK

Use of the digital voucher in a supermarket

With the Panama Solidario Plan, Panama won the Excellence Award from the Electronic Government Network (ExcelGOB) of Latin America and the Caribbean, in the category “Digital Government against COVID-19”.

It is an award developed by the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

In this category, which exposed the digital responses of different countries to the pandemic caused by the coronavirus, Barbados, Venezuela, Belize, Haiti, Mexico, Trinidad and Tobago, Dominican Republic, Suriname, Peru, Paraguay, Jamaica, Honduras, Guatemala participated. Guyana, and Panama.

Among the technical resources presented were webinars, publications and guides to digitally detect, prevent and respond to COVID-19.

The Panama Solidario Plan is a direct aid program, which, until November 18, 2020, has benefited more than 1.6 million Panamanians, according to the National Government.

This technological platform, developed by the Government Innovation Authority (AIG), includes the delivery of solidarity bags (4,085,658 delivered) and physical bonds (2,121,434 delivered), as well as digital bond transactions (6,864,876 transferred) to the cards of Panamanians economically affected with suspension of employment contracts, or that they have not received any income since before the pandemic.

The program is carried out thanks to 1,209 volunteers who produce the solidarity bags, and another 5,350 Panamanians who take to the streets to distribute the deliveries in air, water and land transportation.

ELEVEN VACCINES AGAINST COVID-19, ON THE FINAL STRAIGHT

Thousands of volunteers, like Heather Lieberman, from Florida, United States, participate in human clinical trials.

Of the 48 experimental vaccines against Covid-19 that are currently in clinical trials in humans, 11 have already entered phase 3, the last one before approval by the health authorities, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

This is a review of the first vaccines likely to hit the market.

These are currently the potential vaccines that appear to be the most advanced and use ultra-innovative technology. This consists of injecting fragments of genetic instructions called messenger RNA into human cells, so that they make specific coronavirus proteins or “antigens”. These proteins will be delivered to the immune system, which will then produce antibodies.

-Pfizer: the US giant and its German partner BioNTech are preparing to apply to the US Medicines Agency for an emergency use authorization for a vaccine that could be available before the end of the year. The companies presented provisional results of phase 3 a few days ago with an efficiency of “more than 90%” in the participants, before yesterday announcing complete results that present an efficiency of 95%.

-Modern: The American Biotechnology Society announced Monday that its vaccine was 94.5% effective. It plans to produce 20 million doses before the end of the year.

The most traditional

Instead, several vaccines are betting on this technology: the infectious agents of SARS-CoV-2 are treated chemically, or by heat, to lose their harmfulness, while preserving their ability to provoke an immune response. It is the most traditional form of vaccination.

  • Sinovac: The Chinese biotechnology company started a phase 3 trial for CoronaVac with thousands of volunteers, mainly in Brazil.
  • Sinopharm, another Chinese laboratory, launched two vaccine projects with research institutes in that country, which plans to produce 610 million doses per year of various vaccines against Covid-19 before the end of the year, and has already authorized urgent use of some of them.
  • Bharat Biotech: the Indian company began in November, for its part, to recruit about 26,000 people for its Covaxin, developed with the support of the Indian government, and is committed to a vaccine available in the first half of 2021.

Another way

The “viral vector” vaccines use another more virulent virus as a carrier, transformed to add a part of the virus responsible for Covid-19. The modified virus penetrates the cells of vaccinated people, which make a typical SARS-CoV-2 protein, educating their immune systems to recognize it.

  • AstraZeneca, Anglo-Swedish group, and Oxford University: their vaccine uses an adenovirus as a viral vector. Results of the trial are expected this year.
  • Johnson & Johnson: the American launched two clinical trials of its candidate composed of a modified adenovirus, one of a single dose and the other of two. Around the world, 90 thousand volunteers will participate. Results are expected in the first quarter of 2021.
  • CanSino Biological: the Chinese company developed Ad5-nCoV, together with the army, a vaccine based on adenovirus. Phase 3 trials have been launched in Mexico, Russia, and Pakistan.
  • Sputnik V: developed by the Gamaleya Epidemiology Research Center, with the Russian Defense Ministry, this vaccine is based on the use of two viral vectors, two adenoviruses. The Russians announced a 92% efficiency a few days ago. However, the Gamaleya institute is accused of breaking the usual protocols to speed up the scientific process. Several senior Russian officials announced that they had already been vaccinated with Sputnik V.
  • Novavax: the US biotechnology company is working on a so-called ‘subunit’ recombinant vaccine. The coronavirus has spikes (viral proteins) on its surface to come into contact with cells and infect them. These proteins can be replicated and then presented to the immune system for reaction. Novavax launched its phase 3 clinical trial in the UK in September and a US trial is due to begin by the end of November. Preliminary data is expected for the first quarter of 2021.

GOVERNMENT AND BUSINESSES AGREE TO WORK ON NEW METHODOLOGY FOR MEETINGS OF THE ECONOMIC TABLE

Government authorities met with representatives of the business associations.

Representatives of the business unions held a meeting this Wednesday with the ministers of State that make up the Trade Reopening Table and representatives of the Health Advisory Council, which analyzes the behavior of the pandemic in Panama, in which it was agreed to work on a new methodology for the development of the meetings.

During the meeting, the businessmen were reiterated the call to continue participating in decision-making against COVID-19 in the country, and President Laurentino Cortizo indicated that the doors of the Presidency of the Republic and of this Government are always open both to them and to the workers’ sector.

“The Government is always willing to listen to the business sector so that they provide the inputs and the Government, as administrator, make decisions for the benefit of the majority of Panamanians,” Cortizo said.

The Minister of Commerce and Industries, Ramón Martínez, explained to the unions the mechanics of the meetings of the Table, which before the reopening was held on Mondays where a report was offered on the situation of the disease in the country, and On Wednesdays when reopening was approved, however, they “were the product of the commercial reopening group and as most of them have already occurred, a new methodology is required to meet this new need and a meeting will be held soon to define it ”.

He also indicated that later the government authorities and the unions will hold a meeting with the unions to discuss the issue of the balance between the economic and health issues.

The president of the National Council of Private Enterprise (Conep), Julio De La Lastra, made a call for the unity of the business sector with the Government because it is the only formula to face the pandemic and the way out of the economic crisis . “We want to reach an agreement with the Government because we must now be more united,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Health, Luis Francisco Sucre, said that the National Government has an action plan in case of outbreaks in the country, while calling on them to continue working calmly from their businesses, highlighting that “all as a whole -Government, businessmen and Panamanian society- have done things well so far and, in particular, is very optimistic about the control of the pandemic ”.

On the other hand, Cortizo reiterated the invitation to participate in the call for the Bicentennial Pact: Closing Gaps, which will begin this Thursday 26 in the amphitheater of the City of Knowledge. “You have already been invited and I invite you again because you are an important sector in the country,” he added.

The meeting was attended by the Minister of Economy and Finance, Héctor Alexander; the Minister for Health, Eyra Ruiz and Camilo Alleyne, for the Health Advisory Council, the representatives of the Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture of Panama (CCIAP), the Panamanian Association of Business Executives (APEDE), Industrial Union of Panama, the National Council of Private Enterprise (Conep), and the Panamanian Chamber of Construction (CAPAC).

PANDEMIC CAUSES THE CLOSURE OF 14 THOUSAND AIR ROUTES

Before the coronavirus, the industry supported 65.5 million jobs, more than half of them indirectly through tourism.

Before the coronavirus, a decades-long aviation boom spawned a network of nearly 50,000 air routes across the world. In less than a year, the pandemic has wiped almost a third of them off the map.

Border closures, national mobility restrictions and fear of contracting Covid-19 through other passengers have paralyzed commercial travel.

As thousands of domestic and international connections disappear completely from airline schedules, the world suddenly stopped shrinking.

The crisis is unleashing a vast social and industrial reformulation that took place during half a century of proliferation of air travel.

In the coming years, business trips abroad and vacations will likely mean more stops at airports, longer travel times, and perhaps an additional means of transportation.

Even when an effective vaccine is found, the economic reality of the recovery could mean that some nonstop flights will be gone forever.

With borders effectively closed from Europe to New Zealand, most of the world’s canceled routes are inevitably cross-border.

However, thousands of domestic routes have also been phased out, reflecting the pressure airlines face at home to cut jobs and retire planes to find a cost base that reflects their downsizing.

At the end of January, 47,756 operational routes crossed the world, more than half in the United States, Western Europe and Northeast Asia, according to OAG Aviation Worldwide. As of Nov. 2, there were only 33,416 routes on world timetables, according to the data.

In Hervey Bay, a small resort town on Australia’s east coast, residents regret missing their last direct air connection to Sydney, the country’s main national and international gateway.

This flight was one of eight regional routes canceled by Virgin Australia Holdings Ltd. after collapsing in April under $ 5 billion in debt.

Before the coronavirus, the industry supported 65.5 million jobs, more than half of them indirectly through tourism, and had a global economic impact of 2.7 trillion dollars, according to the 2019 Aviation Benefits Report, a study conducted by industry groups, including the United Nations International Civil Aviation Organization.

Regrowth

For the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the rebound of respiratory disease in Europe and the lack of control in the United States will cause a decrease in intercontinental travel, causing commercial aviation to be more concentrated in the regions.

This phenomenon will also be exacerbated in Latin America, where important airline groups such as Avianca and Aeroméxico were forced to seek the protection of the bankruptcy law of the United States to protect themselves from their creditors while they execute a financial restructuring plan in the face of losses caused by the pandemic.

The pharmaceutical company Pfizer announced that its vaccine against covid-19 has an efficacy of 95% from 28 days after the first dose, according to a statement from the company itself, which already issued a first efficacy evaluation a few days ago.

According to the statement, in this latest phase three evaluation, 170 confirmed cases of COVID-19 have been identified, of which 162 were detected in the placebo group compared to 8 in those who were administered the vaccine. In total, more than 41,000 people have participated in this trial around the world.

In total, about 43,000 people have participated in this trial worldwide, of which just over 41,000 received a second dose on November 13.

“The efficacy was constant according to age, gender, race and ethnicity,” says the company statement, which highlights that “the efficacy observed in adults over 65 years was greater than 94%.”

According to Pfizer, the data shows that the vaccine was well tolerated in all populations with more than 43,000 enrolled participants and that no serious safety concerns were observed. The only major side effects have been fatigue (3.8%) and headache (2%).

Both Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech plan to send their findings to the US and European drug agencies in a few days, to share the data with other regulatory agencies around the world.

The companies expect to produce up to 50 million doses of vaccines globally in 2020 and up to 1.3 billion doses by the end of 2021, the Pfizer statement said.

In that note, Pfizer Chairman and CEO Albert Bourla says that “the study results mark an important step in this historic eight-month journey to present a vaccine capable of helping end this devastating pandemic.”

“We continue to advance at the speed of science to collect all the data collected so far and share it with regulators around the world,” he said.

For his part, Ugur Sahin, co-founder of BioNTech, stated that “these achievements highlight the potential of messenger RNA as a new class of drug. Our goal from the beginning was to design and develop a vaccine that would generate rapid and powerful protection against COVID-19 and a benign tolerability profile at all ages. “

“We believe that we have succeeded with our BNT162b2 vaccine candidate in all age groups studied so far and we look forward to sharing more details with regulatory authorities,” he said.

The phase 3 clinical trial of BNT162b2 began on July 27 and involved 43,661 people, 41,135 of whom received a second dose of the candidate vaccine.

HOTEL OCCUPANCY REACHES 8% AT 31 DAYS AFTER REOPENING

The tourism sector asks to maintain a policy of reopening in harmony with the reality of the country.

As projected, the recovery of Panamanian tourism will be slow and prolonged, after a stoppage that lasted for more than 7 months due to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.

On November 12 the first 30 days of reopening were fulfilled and the data of the sector indicate that the hotel occupancy is around 8% and the projections for the rest of the year is that it does not exceed 10%.

There are just over 32 thousand rooms in the country and it is estimated that more than 60% have not been fitted out due to the lack of demand.

Armando Rodríguez, president of the Panamanian Hotel Association (Apatel), reported that the numbers are below the sector’s projections, although he warns that they could be worse taking into account the little planning margin that tourism companies have to execute their plans. , given the unstable situation due to the behavior of the pandemic.

He points out that during the first days of November a greater influx of beach hotels was expected; He says that there are stores that operated with 60% of their available rooms, but the demand did not exceed 40%.

According to the Apatel president, the vast majority of travelers entering the country are corporate clients, that is, executives of companies that are established in the country, or who come for new business reasons.

“Tourists are entering, but it is difficult to determine how many, because there is no reliable statistic that makes the difference between foreigners who come by subject of residence or if they are actually tourists,” he said.

When asked about the matter, the administrator of the Panama Tourism Authority, Iván Eskildsen, commented that the movement of tourists exceeded expectations.

He explained that in a realistic scenario a movement of 24 thousand tourists was expected for the last quarter of the year, but said that in the first 30 days after the opening of the sector, the movement of 39 thousand tourists was registered.

Against the wall

In addition to the low demand, there are factors that increase the pressure on Panamanian tourism, such as the labor and financial aspects.

Ernesto Orillac, president of the Panamanian Chamber of Tourism (Camtur), comments that to date less than 20% of the employment contracts that were suspended have been reactivated. Before the opening on October 12, some 100,000 tourism-related contracts were projected to be dormant.

Orillac recalls that in December the extension given by the Government to maintain the suspended contracts expires, but acknowledges that it will have a negative impact on the sector if no alternative is found to extend the suspension.

Another issue that worries tourism companies is access to flexible loans that allow them to resume their operations after being closed for more than one semester.

The president of Camtur indicates that the financing plans that some banks are granting do not offer any grace period so that companies can have a respite, which has made it difficult to access those funds.

Along the same lines, the Apatel president said that the electricity transmission companies continue to pressure hotels to cancel the energy consumption bills that they accumulated in recent months in the short term.

“We have sent letters to the National Authority of Public Services, including the administrator of the Tourism Authority, Iván Eskildsen, has intervened on the issue, but we have not been able to give us more time to cancel the debt,” he said.

Hospital hotels

The debt that the Government maintains with the 14 hotels that are being used to care for positive coronavirus patients increased again to 7 million dollars.

The president of Apatel pointed out that the authorities heeded the call that the sector made in the past by canceling the debt of the first months, but indicates that once again the delinquency exceeds 7 million dollars.

There is discontent because this was a matter of solidarity, but the authorities are not honoring the commitment.

Promotion

Undoubtedly, international promotion will play a key role more than ever in the recovery of Panamanian tourism. In the last 8 years, Panama has not had a long-term strategy that facilitates the marketing of its attractions.

Lorena Fábrega, Director of Business Development of the International Promotion Fund (Promtur), explained that in October and November the Panamanian attractions were promoted in 5 virtual international fairs.

“This week, we were present at the World Travel Market Virtual 2020 (WTM), one of the most relevant fairs in the world of leisure tourism, for the promotion of our beautiful natural and cultural heritage, in which we arranged 33 appointments and 12 business opportunities ”, Fabrega explained.

For the first 5 months of 2021, Promtur has already confirmed its participation in 7 international events.

Regarding the execution of the “Discovered by Nature” campaign, whose broadcast was suspended last May pending the updating of the marketing studies, Fábrega said that “we are awaiting the approval of the time addendum to the media contract, for part of the Comptroller General of the Republic ”.

While the Comptroller approves the time extension, Promtur has kept the campaign message current through public relations actions, achieving 600 million impressions in digital media and 58 publications in international media, including Forbes, New York Times and CNN Travel.

Although the international promotion of the country has been the responsibility of Promtur since August 2018, Eskilden indicates that the ATP also advances in the execution of the update of the tourism master plan that is based on conservation tourism, but with a north of innovation and differentiation , starting from the natural and cultural riches of the country.

The presidents of Apatel and Camtur emphasize that it is important to publicize the efforts that the country has made to comply with sanitary regulations and thus gain the trust of travelers.

Guild calls for authorization for congresses and exhibitions

Again, Costa Rica beats Panama in tourism. The neighboring country is already accepting international events, while in Panama this sector is crying out for the authorities to allow it to resume its activities.

The congresses and conventions segment is included in the package of activities that do not have an established date to return to the ring.

Luis Ricardo Martínez, president of the Panamanian Association of Professionals in Congresses, Exhibitions and Related (Appce), comments that for months they have the protocols prepared to carry out activities following sanitary regulations, but indicates that they have not been able to obtain the approval of the health authorities.

He points out that despite the working table that they were able to establish with the Ministry of Health, the authorities have not understood the difference between a closed corporate event, with the holding of a fair or carnival, which are massive activities.

Hotels have invested to comply with sanitary measures, but since the events have not been authorized, many prefer to remain closed, he said.

Industry reports indicate that an event with 500 participants generates an expense per person of 2,100 dollars, of which 85% is allocated to airfare and lodging.

Fernando Duque, president of the Tourism Promotion Fund, reported that the congresses and conventions segment is included in the strategy that the country will implement once the sanitary measures adopted to combat the pandemic are lifted.

Regarding the start-up of the new Amador convention center, the tourism authorities have reported that it will not be until the second half of 2021 that the structure, of about 55 thousand square meters, will come into operation.

THE MINSA WOULD BET ON THE MICRO CLUSTERS TO CONTAIN THE SPREAD OF COVID-19

The Ministry of Health (Minsa), plans to impose restriction measures in a sectorized manner in places where the increase in COVID19 cases is experienced, as part of a new strategy to stop the spread of the pandemic virus.

The epidemiologist doctor Arturo Rebollón, recalled that previously we had already been in a peak of a thousand cases a day, to which we have returned in recent days, however, by maintaining the speed at 20%, we will begin to have 1,200 daily cases if not measurements are taken.

Since the pandemic began, Panama has taken restrictive measures to take care of indicators such as RT, mortality rate, hospital capacity and the increase in cases, but, at this point, new strategies are required based on the knowledge of the behavior of the viruses and experiences in other latitudes.

We have learned from other countries, one of the strategies we want to do is the micro-clusters that, for example, one could be installed in the San Francisco district, which since the start of the pandemic has been the top 10 cases, ”said Rebollón.

He explained that this does not mean that the entire district will be closed, because according to reports, the increase in cases is in specific areas and that is where the measures will be imposed.

Rebollón said that this has been a strategy implemented in New York, which was one of the cities most affected by the virus in the United States, and that it has worked successfully for them. He stressed that people have welcomed the use of masks, but it is not enough, you have to keep your distance, if possible use face masks and avoid crowded spaces to have greater security.

AMP RAISES RESTRICTION OF SAILING, MAINTAINS PREVENTIVE NOTICE FOR NAVIGATION IN BOTH COASTS

The AMP maintains preventive notice for navigation on both coasts.

The Panama Maritime Authority (AMP) lifted as of Wednesday the suspension of the departure of smaller vessels and pleasure yachts on both the Caribbean and Pacific coasts.

90% OF COVID-19 PATIENTS ARRIVE LATE TO EMERGENCY ROOMS

Data from the last two epidemiological weeks show an increase in deaths caused by Covid-19.

According to epidemiology reports from the Ministry of Health (Minsa), in this last epidemiological week (from November 8 to 14), 86 people died, 5 more than in the previous week (November 1 to 7).

Only on November 13, 26 deaths were registered, a figure that was not reported in the country in just one day since last August 9, when the authorities reported 30 deaths due to Covid-19.

Eyra Ruíz, Minister of Health, explained that 90% of patients who die have risk factors, such as hypertension, diabetes, kidney failure, obesity, among others, and 90% of patients who arrive at the emergency rooms you have trouble breathing, which means you were not keeping track of your oxygen saturation.

She added that the group of patients with risk factors will be followed up at the community level, because “when a patient arrives at the hospital, we have practically lost half the way.”

An epidemiological investigation carried out in 49 records of deaths that occurred from November 2 to 8 shows that the average age was 73 years: the youngest was 42 and the oldest was 94. Regarding sex, 28 were male and 21 female.

“Those who were under 60, who were 6, all had risk factors,” said Gladys Guerrero, coordinator of Nosocomial Infections of the Social Security Fund (CSS).

Regarding the deaths on November 13, there were patients referred from different health regions, from the north, metro, east and west, San Miguelito, who arrived “late” to the health care system.

US AUTHORIZES A RAPID COVID-19 TEST TO TAKE AT HOME

The US authorizes a rapid test for COVID-19 to be done at home.

Regulatory authorities in the United States on Tuesday authorized the emergency use of the first rapid coronavirus test that can be done entirely at home and offers results in 30 minutes.

The announcement by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was a major step in the US efforts to expand COVID-19 diagnostic testing options beyond health centers and points. of tests. However, the test will require a prescription, which will likely limit its initial use.

The FDA granted emergency authorization for the single-use kit from Lucira Health, a California manufacturer.

The company’s test allows users to take a nasal swab themselves. The nasal swab is then rubbed into a vial with a laboratory solution that is connected to a portable device. Results are displayed as colored lights identified as positive or negative.

So far, the FDA has authorized nearly 300 diagnostic tests for coronavirus. The vast majority require a healthcare professional to take the samples from the nose and they must be processed in laboratories using high-tech equipment. Some allow people to collect samples at home – either with a nasal swab or a saliva sample – which is then sent to a laboratory, and often requires a wait of several days for results.

Health experts have called for options that allow people to get tested at home, reducing waiting times and the possible spread of the virus to others, such as healthcare workers.

Rapid tests are crucial to quickly quarantine those infected and trace their contacts. But for months, diagnoses in the United States have been marked by slow results due to the capacity of laboratories. There are other quick tests, but most require a special little machine operated by a professional to get the results.

“Now, more Americans who may have COVID-19 will be able to take immediate action, based on their results, to protect themselves and their environment,” Dr. Jeff Shuren, director of the FDA’s device center, said in a statement.

Lucira did not initially respond to a request for additional details, sent after the end of her working hours on Tuesday.

Lucira’s system was developed from the company’s research for a home flu test, according to the company’s website. Lucira adapted her technology to detect COVID-19 after the outbreak.

The test uses a technology similar to laboratory tests based on genetic information that are the standard tool for detecting the new coronavirus. Instead, most of the rapid tests now used in the United States look for viral proteins called antigens, not the virus itself.

Anyone who tests positive should isolate themselves and seek medical attention, the FDA said in its press release. People who test negative but still have symptoms of coronavirus should see a doctor, as a negative result does not rule out a COVID-19 infection.

The system was also licensed for medical consultations and testing centers. All test points in the United States must report their results to state and federal authorities to keep track of the pandemic. Physicians will be required to report test results at home.

The FDA authorized the new diagnostic test using its emergency powers to accelerate the availability of experimental products during public health crises. Under normal circumstances, the agency requires tests of safety and effectiveness before giving the green light for a new test. But those demands can be lowered during public health emergencies.

The FDA did not release the reliability of the test or the results of the study used by regulators to make the decision.

PANAMA IS AWARDED THE SAFE TRAVELS SEAL FOR COMPLYING WITH PROTOCOLS OF PREVENTION AGAINST COVID-19

Companies should contact the governing associations of their economic activity member of CAMTUR, so that their request can be included in a list.

The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC, for its acronym in English) awarded Panama the Safe Travels seal, which certifies the country as a destination that complies with biosafety protocols with international standards in prevention against COVID-19 .

In Panama, it will be granted to companies and service providers of the tourism industry through the National Chamber of Tourism (CAMTUR), in due coordination with the Tourism Authority of Panama (ATP), since it is a mandatory requirement that First, the national protocols established by the Ministry of Health (MINSA) and the Ministry of Labor and Labor Development (MITRADEL) are complied with.

For the general administrator of the ATP, Iván Eskildsen, obtaining this seal granted by the WTTC “is an essential element to generate confidence in travelers in the current context, in the process of attracting tourists from different countries; once achieved this sense of trust, then we will be able to attract them by reinforcing our strategy of differentiation and innovation, offering authentic tourist experiences, based on our natural and cultural heritage “.

For his part, the president of CAMTUR, Ernesto Orillac, said that “it is important to certify our destination and products with the Safe Travels seal, since it allows both national and foreign travelers to feel safe when planning their trips to places that have adopted hygiene and health protocols, standardized worldwide, so that they can obtain an unforgettable and very safe experience “.

Given the right granted to Panama to implement the use of the Safe Travels seal to promote internationally safe destinations on biosafety issues, the WTTC will publish the list of companies that comply with the standards in their communication channels promoting Panama.

It is for this reason that CAMTUR, together with the ATP, seeking a way to promote safe tourism in our country, is organizing the tourism sector so that those companies affiliated with the Chamber or not can obtain the Safe Travels seal following the following requirements:

The companies must have the approval or the process in process of the committees and biosafety protocols of their company before the MINSA / MITRADEL.

Companies should contact the governing associations of their economic activity member of CAMTUR, so that their request can be included in a list.

The legitimacy of the applicant companies will be verified, providing a copy of the Company’s Articles of Incorporation or Certification of the Public Registry, Operation Notice, public service receipt detailing the address of your company.

CAMTUR will send your request to the ATP to verify that the company is duly registered with this institution.

Verified in ATP, CAMTUR may grant the use of the Safe Travels seal to companies that comply with the above. The use of this seal will be for those companies that comply with and have submitted the biosafety protocols established by MINSA and MITRADEL

This seal does not replace or dictate greater importance than official certifications in terms of health or biosafety protocols since it does not exempt from having its biosafety committees and protocols required by the aforementioned local authorities.

This information will circulate so that all interested companies that comply with the aforementioned can request the use of the Safe Travels seal granted by WTTC.

END NOTES

This was sent to me from a friend.  It’s kind of naughty, but still something publishable – most of the things this friend sends me are NOT.  When I told him about my accident with the chop saw, he insinuated that I may have troubles in the bathroom with just one arm and should ask a good friend for help.  He then clarified that he is NOT one of my good friends.  Hahaha

Stay safe…  Stay healthy…  And by all means (unless you’re temporarily handicapped and are out looking for help from a friend) STAY HOME!!…
